Ex- US President Jimmy Carter & Family Visit Cozumel

Nobel Peace Prize Winner and 39th President of the United States of America, James Earl “Jimmy” Carter, Jr. and his family visited Cozumel on New Year’s Day.  Mr. Carter, accompanied by family, including his wife Rosalynn, and a small entourage of secret service, paid a visit to one of Cozumel’s most important archeological sites, the ruins of San Gervasio. Dressed casually in jeans and tennis shoes, the once First Family of the United States spent an hour touring the area with representatives of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology & History (INAH).

Galardonado con el Premio Nobel y 39º Presidente de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, James Earl “Jimmy” Carter, Jr. y su familia visitaron Cozumel el día de Año Nuevo. Acompañado de su familia, el Sr. Carter así como su esposa Rosalynn y un pequeño séquito de elementos del servicio secreto, visitaron uno de los sitios arqueológicos más importantes en Cozumel: San Gervasio. Vestidos casualmente con pantalones de mezclilla y tenis, la que en algún momento fuera la Primera Familia de los Estados Unidos permaneció una hora paseando por el área junto con representantes del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH).

According to the Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC), the archeological site of San Gervasio received 28% more visitors January – November in 2014 than the same period in 2013.  During that period in 2014, over 143,200 people visited the Pre-Hispanic site.  In addition to an influx of tourism, another reason attributed to the increase was the new and improved entry road, which was renovated and completed in 2014.

De acuerdo a la Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) el sitio arqueológico San Gervasio recibió 28% más visitantes de Enero a Noviembre del 2014, que durante el mismo periodo en el año 2013. Durante 2014, más de 143,200 personas visitaron el sitio prehispánico. Aunado a la afluencia de turismo, otro motivo por el cual se atribuye el incremento es el camino nuevo y mejorado, que se renovó y concluyó en el 2014.

Cozumel’s Cruz Roja’s Gala Casino Night Saturday January 31st

Saturday, January 31, at Arlequin Party Room from 7 PM to 1 AM  is the place to be for a night of fun, prizes and a fabulous Silent Auction.   This gigantic Cruz Roja fundraiser will entirely benefit the new Diabetes Center adjacent to the Cruz Roja Clinic.  Games will include blackjack, Texas Hold'em, Caribbean stud poker, roulette and continental. 

Tickets are $350 pesos or $26 USD and may be purchased from Pam Anderson at 987-115-4589, Martha Sempere at 987-871-9199, at the Cruz Roja Clinic on Av. 65 at 23 Sur, or at Restaurant La Choza on Av.10.  The tickets will be available starting Jan. 15 and will include $1000 in fantasy play money, a complimentary drink, and a chance in raffle drawings to win one of nine prizes. An additional prize will be awarded for the best "red" item someone is wearing since the theme is "Red and Black" to carry out the casino card color theme! 

The Silent Auction will include outstanding items generously donated by local merchants and individuals - restaurant meals, gift certificates, massages, teeth cleaning, handmade sea glass jewelry, day passes to beach clubs,  2-tank boat dive trips, manicures/pedicures, spa treatments, etc.  The highest bidder for each item will win the certificate for the item or items on which he has bid.  100% of the Silent Auction bid monies will be used to finish the construction and to furnish the Diabetes Center.

So mark January 31 on your calendar and buy your admission tickets next week for this night of fun!

Noche de gala y de casino en beneficio de la Cruz Roja de Cozumel el sábado 31 de enero

El sábado 31 de enero en el salón de fiestas “Arlequín”, de 7:00 pm a 1: a-m- es el lugar donde se debe estar para pasar una noche de diversión, premios y una fabulosa subasta silenciosa. Esta enorme recaudación de la Cruz Roja será totalmente en beneficio del nuevo Centro de Tratamiento de Diabetes anexo a la Clínica de la Cruz Roja. Los juegos incluirán blackjack, Texas hold’em, póquer caribeño,  ruleta y continental.

Los boletos tienen un costo de $350 pesos o $26 dólares estadounidenses, y pueden adquirirlos a través de Pam Anderson llamando al 987-115-4589, con Martha Sempere llamando al 987-871-9199, en la Clínica de la Cruz Roja en Ave. 65 esquina 23 sur o en el restaurante La Choza ubicado en 10ª. Ave. Los boletos estarán disponibles a partir del 15 de enero y el costo incluye $1000 en dinero de fantasía para jugar, una bebida de cortesía y la oportunidad de ganar uno de los nueve premios en las rifas. Se otorgará un premio adicional para el mejor  artículo color “rojo” que alguien vista ya que el tema es “Rojo y Negro” para complementar el tema del color de las cartas del casino.

La subasta silenciosa incluirá artículos excepcionales que han sido generosamente donados por comerciantes y personas locales: comidas en restaurantes, certificados de regalo, masajes, limpieza dental, joyería hecha de vidrio de mar, pases de día a clubes de playa, viajes de buceo de dos tanques, manicure/pedicure, tratamiento de SPA, etc. El postor más alto de cada artículo obtendrá el certificado por el articulo o artículos por los cuales ha pujado; 100% de los dineros de la subasta silenciosa se utilizarán para concluir la construcción y vestir el Centro para Tratamiento de Diabetes. 

Así que, ¡marquen el 31 de enero en sus calendarios y adquirieran sus boletos la próxima semana para pasar una noche de diversión!

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Danke, male 5 months old, weight 6.5 kg. He was rescued by a man as he was being attacked by a pack of dogs on Ave 105 and Calle 8. The man could not keep him as he does not have a fence. He is a loving puppy that is slow to get up in the mornings, he prefers to snooze and wakes up to eat when he wants. Very cute puppy!

Suertuda, female 2 months old. Her name means lucky in Spanish as she was rescued running around frantically on the very busy street: 30 avenida and jumped into an engine of a running car! Our shelter manager was able to rescue her before what would have been a grisly ending! She is very sweet and enjoys playing with all the other kittens.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Danke, macho de 5 meses de edad; pesa 6,5 kg . Fue rescatado por un hombre que vio cómo era atacado por una jauría en Ave. 105 y calle 8. Este señor no pudo quedarse con Danke ya que no cuenta con una reja. Es un perro cariñoso y le cuesta algo de trabajo levantarse por las mañanas; prefiere dormitar y se levanta a comer sólo cuando él lo desea. ¡Es un perro adorable!

Suertuda, hembra 2 meses de edad. Ciertamente es suertuda ya que fue rescatada cuando corría  desesperada en una vía muy transitada: la Avenida 30, ¡y saltó dentro del motor de un automóvil en marcha!  Al gerente de nuestro refugio le fue posible rescatarla de lo que hubiera sido un espeluznante final. Es muy dulce y disfruta jugar con los demás gatitos.

Cha Cha’s Kitchen To Celebrate 1 Year Anniversary

On January 13th Cha Cha’s Kitchen will celebrate it’s one year anniversary here in Cozumel.  The concept started as a weekly lunch menu – offering the highest quality and freshest soups, sandwiches and desserts – all either for delivery, to-go, or dine-in in the backyard garden.  After a whirl-wind year, Cha Chas, run by mother and daughter team of Kathy and Kristina, are overwhelmed at the positive response.  Not only the local island community, which has embraced them whole-heartedly, but now even tourists and cruise ship passengers are making their way to the Colonia Independencia locale. “It’s been incredible, we’ve met so many great people from all over the world,”  says Kathy. 

What’s in the works for next year?  Kristina’s goal is simple:  she wants to continue to create exciting food that inspires her, and her customers.  Cha Cha’s famous made-to-order cakes are now in such high demand, and their garden area has become such a popular venue for baby showers, bachelorette parties and private dinners, that they’ll soon be branching into special events at their location.  “Like” their Facebook page, and perhaps a Sunday pop-up brunch, or a week-end dinner with limited space may cross your newsfeed. 

Cha Cha’s Kitchen has recently returned to their high season hours of 12 – 4, Monday – Thursday, with their weekly lunch menus.  Special order custom-made cakes are available with a minimum 3-day lead time.  Cha Cha’s also caters special events and will even host in their garden venue.  Their gift certificates also make a great gift!

With such lofty goals, Cha Cha’s is looking to add a highly motivated, food-driven individual to their staff, so if you know of anyone, invite them to lunch!

Cha Cha’s Kitchen celebra su primer aniversario en Cozumel el próximo 31 de enero. El concepto inicio como un menú semanal de comidas, ofreciendo las sopas, sándwiches y postres de mayor calidad; todos ya fuera para entregarse, para llevar o para comer en el jardín trasero. Después de un año relámpago, el equipo de Cha Cha’s, formado por madre e hija Kathy y Kristina, están abrumadas por la respuesta positiva. No sólo la comunidad de la Isla, que las ha acogido  sin reservas, sino que ahora también los pasajeros de los buques turísticos se dirigen al local que se ubica en la colonia Independencia “Ha sido increíble, hemos conocido a muchas personas estupendas de todo el mundo”, comenta Kathy.

¿Qué hay planeado para el año siguiente? La meta de Kristina es sencilla. Desea continuar creando comidas que inspiran tanto a sus clientes como a ella. Ha sido tal la demanda de los famosos pasteles de Cha Cha’s bajo pedido así como el área de jardín sitio muy popular para celebrar baby showers, despedidas de soltera y cenas privadas,  que dentro de poco se extenderán a eventos especiales en su local. Den “Me Gusta” en su página de Facebook y posiblemente en su servicio de noticias se entere de un almuerzo de domingo o cena de fin de semana con cupo limitado. 

En fechas recientes Cha Cha’s Kitchen retomó su horario de temporada alta de 12 a 4 de lunes a jueves, con sus menús de comidas semanales. Las órdenes especiales de pasteles personalizados deben hacerse con 3 días de anticipación. Cha Cha’s también da servicio a eventos especiales e incluso pueden dar servicio en su jardín. ¡Los certificados de regalo también son un gran regalo!

Con estos objetivos tan ambiciosos, Cha Cha’s desea agregar a su equipo a una persona altamente resuelta y motivada por los alimentos, así que si conocen a alguien, ¡inviten esa persona a comer!

Honoring Traditions: “Las Cabañuelas,” Mayan Weather Predictions

The ancient Mayans are revered for their knowledge of astronomy, however, they have also left behind another gift, the tradition of  “Las Cabañuelas,”   which has survived over 500 years.    According to tradition, the first twelve days of the year represent the weather for the each month in the year (January 1st = January; January 2 = February, and so on). When reaching January 13, it goes the other way around, this is, January 13 is December, January 14 is November, and so on. This cycle ends on January 24th, hereafter each remaining day represents two months, morning being one month, in this case January, and afternoon representing February.  Then, on the 31st day of January, the 24 hours in the day represent one month starting at 01:00 am until noon (December) and then going backwards again.

The Mayans, and later the Spaniards, used this system to predict the weather, with January being the month that forecasted the rest of the year.  A Franciscan monk traveling with Christopher Columbus, wrote: “Through their gods and observations on the first days of the year, the natives know which days will be good and which will be bad, which will be rainy and which will be dry”. 

According to a very knowledgeable local historian, who has for many years, been tracking the weather using this system, has found it to still be relatively accurate.  For more information on this interesting Mayan Tradition, and how the weather can be predicted, check out the following link.

Honrando tradiciones: "Las Cabañuelas", pronósticos mayas sobre el clima

Los antiguos mayas son admirados por sus conocimientos en astronomía, sin embargo, también nos legaron otro obsequio: la tradición de “Las Cabañuelas” que ha sobrevivido más de 500 años. De acuerdo a la tradición, los primeros doce días del año representan el clima que prevalecerá durante cada mes del año (el 1º de enero equivale al mes de enero; el 2 de enero al mes de febrero, etc.). Al llegar a día 13 de enero, el conteo retrocede siendo entonces que el día 13 de enero representa al mes de diciembre, el 14 de enero al mes de noviembre y así sucesivamente.  Este ciclo  concluye el día 31 de enero y las 24 horas del día representan un mes del año, iniciando a la 01:00 a.m. y al llegar al mediodía (diciembre), retrocede el conteo nuevamente.  

Los mayas y, posteriormente los españoles, utilizaron este sistema para predecir el clima, siendo que el mes de enero pronosticaba el clima para el resto del año. Un monje franciscano que viajaba con Cristóbal Colón escribió: “Saben estos indios por su consultas a sus dioses y su observación de los primeros días del año cuáles serán buenos y cuáles serán malos, cuáles pluviosos y cuáles secos”. 

De acuerdo a un sabio historiador local que durante años ha analizado el clima utilizando este sistema, ha encontrado que es relativamente exacto. Para más información acerca de esta interesante tradición y de cómo puede predecirse el clima, eche un vistazo a esto enlace.
