“Medusa” Super Yacht Calls into Cozumel

Early this week Cozumel was lucky enough to have the Medusa, a famous super yacht call into port.  The 60.66 M (199 FT) yacht is one of the best known Feadships, and boasts it’s own decompression chamber as well as a helicopter landing facility.  With room for 12 guests, the ship features 6 staterooms, including two on deck, a cinema, gym, Jacuzzi, and even an elevator.  Operated by a crew of 15, the Medusa was built in 1996 but had a complete refit in 2011.

El súper yate “Medusa” llega a Cozumel

A comienzos de esta semana el puerto de Cozumel tuvo la fortuna de recibir al famoso súper yate “Medusa”. El yate de 60.66 metros (199 pies) de eslora es uno de los más famosos de la armadora Feadships, y se jacta de tener su propia cámara hiperbárica así como un helipuerto. Con alojamiento para 12 invitados, la embarcación cuenta con 6 camarotes incluyendo dos en la cubierta, una sala de cine, gimnasio, jacuzzi e incluso un elevador. La operación está a cargo de 15 miembros de tripulación. El yate “Medusa” fue construido en el año 1996 y fue reacondicionado en el 2011.

This Week Marks Low Cozumel Cruise Ship Arrivals

Cozumel island will host 5 less ships than the previous week, as only 11 are slated to call into port.  Two ships per day have been scheduled for Tuesday – Saturday, with only one cruiser in port Monday and zero on Sunday.  The majority of the cruise liners will be docked in Puerta Maya.  33,000 people are expected to arrive on these scheduled ships.

During Cozumel’s high season, which runs from November – April as many as 20 cruise ships will arrive weekly.

Esta semana marca una baja en los arribos de buques turísticos

La Isla de Cozumel recibirá 5 buques menos que la semana anterior ya que se espera que sólo arriben 11 buques a puerto. El programa marca dos buques al día del martes al sábado; solamente uno el lunes y ninguno el domingo. La mayoría de las líneas navieras atracarán en Puerta Maya. Se espera que arriben 33,000 personas en estos arribos.

Durante la temporada alta de arribos, esto es de Noviembre a Abril, llegan a puerto hasta 20 buques turísticos por semana. 

Humane Society of Cozumel Island Pets of the Week

Lucas- Male dog, 3 months, weight 3.9 Kg. Arrived on Jul-1-15. Lucas was found by a family in Colonia San Gervasio. They really wanted to keep him, and even tried for a month, but they just couldn’t afford to, especially with the dogs they currently had. Lucas is a high energy dog and loves to run and chase things. He’d be a super companion to a jogger.

Linda – Female kitten . 2 months, weights 690 gr. Arrived on Jun-7-15. Linda was found in the center of the 20 Av. The people that found her were concerned that she might get run over so they catch her and brought her to HS so she could be safe. She is super playful, she chases her toy mouses and jumps all over her kennel.

PLEASE: Volunteer at the shelter, it is so important for the dogs and cats to get hug-a-therapy, you can walk our dogs or play with the puppies and cats Monday to Saturday 11am to 1pm and 3pm to 4:30pm and Sundays 11am to 3pm children must come with a responsible grown up. Our pets love the attenttion and you'll have a nice day. You can also be trained: We will have a  High Volume, No Cost Spay/Neuter Campaign on June and volunteers are the heart of this campaigns. We will also need more donations: cotton, syringes, gauze, old newspapers, etc we will keep you posted.
We have identification tags for your pets, come and see them, remember your pet must have it's collar with id tag at all times. And they should never be on the street alone.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Lucas – Macho de 3 meses de edad con un peso de 3.9 kg. Llegó el 1º de julio de este año. Lucas fue encontrado en la colonia San Gervasio. La familia que lo encontró sí deseaba quedarse con él, e incluso trataron de hacerlo durante un mes, pero no les era posible sufragar los gastos, especialmente con los perros que ya tienen. Lucas es un perro con mucha energía y le encanta correr y perseguir cosas. Será un excelente compañero para quien sea un corredor.

Linda – Gatita de 2 meses con un peso de 690 grms. Llegó al albergue el 7 de junio. Fue encontrado al centro de la avenida 20. Las personas que la encontraron estaban preocupadas que alguien la atropellara por lo que la trajeron al albergue de la Sociedad Humanitaria para que estuviera segura. Es súper juguetona; persigue a todos los ratones de juguete y salta de un lado a otro en su jaula.

POR FAVOR: Ofrezcan ser voluntarios en el refugio. Es muy importante que los perros reciban terapia de cariño. Pueden llevar a caminar a nuestros perros o jugar con los cachorros y gatos de lunes a sábado de 11 a.m. a 1 p.m. y de 3 a 4:30 p-m. Los niños deben venir acompañados de un adulto responsable. A nuestras mascotas les encanta la atención y ustedes pasarán un día agradable. Usted también puede recibir capacitación: durante el mes de junio tendremos una campaña de Alto Volumen, Castración/Esterilización sin costo y los voluntarios están en el centro de estas campañas.

Recuerden, por favor, ser parte de la solución; adopten, esterilicen/castren a su mascota, donen, cuiden a los que rescaten (tráiganlos al albergue para que los revise el veterinario). Nuestro número telefónico es : 987-112-3376

“How I Came to Call Cozumel Home” A Series, by Island Residents (or Wanna-be Residents)  by Irma Portilla de Cantarell

For the fourth year in a row, Cozumel 4 You is proud to host this weekly series, which features island residents – written in their own words, describe how they came to call the island home and what they love about Cozumel.  Running from June – August, you can find the 2 prior years in our archives,  2014 & 2013.

I think when it is destiny; there is nothing else you can do. My grandmother was born in Cozumel, around 1890. My grandfather, a sailor who brought supplies to the island, took her away with him, first to Xcalak in the coast, where my father was born, and later to Mexico City for school purposes, where my dad became a doctor.   We came to visit Cozumel every year since I can remember.   My father’s side of the family, and Í always stayed at the Hotel Playa Azul, however,  one year they bumped us to Hotel Cantarell, and that is where my I met my then to be husband. Juan Carlos’  father owned the hotel, and during one of these vacation visits, we met, I was 15 and he was 19. During that time I was living in Mexico City and he was in Cuernavaca.

We dated for almost seven years, and when we married, I never doubted where I wanted to live anywhere but here.It was kind of hard at first, there was no supermarket, but el mercado and the Sedena store.  I was a big city girl used to having things done for you, and el mercado made things very hard for me, especially trying to get meat cuts, and specially fresh fruits and vegetables. I was starting to understand why my grandma had left!

My husband has been great to me for all these years, we have an incredible marriage and we are going to celebrate our 28th wedding anniversary next year.  Hurricane Gilbert destroyed my husband’s hotel, and we had to start all over again, diversifying into other opportunities such as the Fiesta Car Rental and the  insurance business  but it’s been quite an experience so far.

My children were born here, and I don`t think twice about a greater place to raise children.  I am a big triathlon fan, and even become the first cozumeleña to have finished the Ironman!   So here I am going into my 28th year on the island, and hopefully many more to come! 

Irma Portilla de Cantarell is the owner of the AXA Insurance located on Av. 30 and 11.  She is an avid runner and active in many island charities.

Por cuarto año consecutivo, Cozumel 4 You se engalana al presentar esta serie semanal donde figuran habitantes de la Isla, quienes, a través de sus propias palabras, describen cómo es que Cozumel se convirtió en su hogar y qué es lo que aman de Cozumel. La serie aparece de Junio a Agosto; pueden encontrar los años anteriores en nuestros archivos, 2014 & 2013.  

El padre de Juan Carlos era propietario del hotel, y durante una de estas visitas vacacionales, nos conocimos; yo contaba con 15 años de edad y él 19. Durante esa época yo residía en la Ciudad de México y él en Cuernavaca.

El cortejo y las citas duraron casi siete años, y cuando nos casamos no dude ni un momento de que quería vivir en cualquier otro lugar menos aquí. Al principio fue algo difícil, no había un supermercado, sólo el mercado y la tienda Sedena. Yo era una chica procedente de la gran ciudad, acostumbrada a que me hicieran las cosas y el mercado hizo todo me fuera difícil, especialmente al tratar de que me dieran cortes de carnes, y, en especial, frutas y vegetales frescos. ¡Comenzaba a entender el motivo por el cual se había ido mi abuelo!

Durante todos estos años, mi esposo ha sido fabuloso. Tenemos un matrimonio increíble y vamos a celebrar nuestro 25º aniversario de bodas el próximo año. El huracán Gilberto destruyó el hotel de mi esposo, y nuevamente tuvimos que comenzar, diversificándonos hacia otras oportunidades tales como Fiesta Car Rental y la aseguradora, y, hasta ahora, ha sido toda una experiencia.

Mis hijos nacieron aquí, y no necesito pensarlo dos veces en cuanto a que este es un lugar ideal para criar a los hijos. ¡Soy gran admiradora del triatlón y hasta llegué a ser la primera Cozumeleña en terminar en el Ironman! ¡Así que ya voy para mi 28º año en la Isla y muchos más por venir!

Irma Portilla de Cantarell, es propietaria de los Seguros AXA ubicado en Av. 30 y 11. Es una ávida maratonista y se mantiene muy activa en muchas organizaciones benéficas en la Isla.

Cozumel’s Eastern Beaches to Have Increased Vigilence During Turtle Nesting Season

Now that the 2015 turtle nesting season is officially upon us, Municipal authorities have announced that vigilance on the other side of the island will be increased, so that turtles will have a safe place to nest. Island residents are also strongly encouraged to leave their dogs at home, during nesting season. Some dogs have been known to dig holes in the sand in search of stray turtle eggs, and the scent of dogs on the beach, can also be a deterrent to a female turtle looking for a predator. 

Access to the Eastern side of the island at night time, when turtles head to shore to lay their eggs, will also be restricted so that the vehicle headlights will not interfere with their nesting activities. 

Aumenta la vigilancia en las playas al oriente de la isla durante la temporada de anidación de la tortuga

Ahora que oficialmente la temporada de anidación de la tortuga 2015 está aquí, las autoridades municipales anunciaron que aumentará la vigilancia en el otro extremo de la Isla para garantizar que las tortugas tengan un lugar seguro para anidar. Se recomienda encarecidamente a los habitantes de la Isla que durante la temporada de anidación de la tortuga, dejen a sus perros en casa. Se sabe que algunos perros han escarbado agujeros en la arena en busca de huevos de tortuga; además de que el olor de perros en la playa tiene efectos disuasivos en una tortuga hembra que anda en busca de un depredador.

Se restringe el acceso al extremo oriental de la Isla cuando las tortugas se acercan a la costa a anidar, evitando así que las luces de los vehículos interfieran con las actividades de anidación.

Baby Turtle Release in Cozumel – a heartwarming post from Global Couple.com about their experience releasing baby turtles here in Cozumel. 

Blood Drive for Keith Morris & the Cozumel Community - Hospital Amerimed Cozumel hospital is hosting a blood drive Saturday and Sunday July 25 & 26 between 0700 - 1000. The hospital is located at AV. 85 and Rosado Salas (85AV y 85AV bis). All blood types are needed particularly A+ used to save Keith Morris  over the past 17 days.  Donors need to fast for 12 hours before, not be on any drugs or medication, be under 65, with no infections. These folks - doctors and staff - are among the most competent and dedicated and compassionate professionals I've seen in the medical field.

Liberación de tortuguitas en Cozumel – Una conmovedora publicación de Global Couple.com acerca de su experiencia al liberar tortuguitas en Cozumel.

Campaña de donación de sangre para Keith Morris y la Comunidad de Cozumel – El sábado y domingo 25 y 26 de julio en el Hospital Amerimed Cozumel se llevará a cabo una campaña de donación de sangre de las 0700 a las 1000. El hospital se ubica en la avenida 85 y Rosado Salas (85 y 85 Bis). Se necesitan todos los tipos de sangre, pero en especial A+ que se ha utilizado para salvar a Keith Morris durante los últimos 17 días. Es necesario que los donadores ayunen con 12 horas d anticipación, no deben estar bajo medicamentos i estupefacientes, ser menores a 65 años de edad, no tener infecciones. Los médicos y el equipo se encuentran entre los profesionales más comprensivos y dedicados con lo que me haya topado en el campo médico. Son completamente distintos a la burocracias de Cozumel que habla mucho de las campañas de donación pero que no logra actuar como corresponde. De manera conjunta con esta campaña de donación de sangre, IslaMed/AmeriMed también busca donativos monetarios. Por favor donen.
