Downtown Malecon Pedestrian Walkway Proposed

The Municipal Director of Tourism has recently signed on to a proposal to close traffic on one side of avenida Rafael E. Melgar between Adolfo Rosado Salas and calle 2 norte, similar to what neighboring Playa del Carmen has done.   The proposal, which still needs a general consensus to pass, would close down one side on Cozumel’s malecón area, creating a pedestrian-friendly area, for shoppers, sightseers and even those wishing to get a little exercise.  City officials have closed one side of the downtown area to traffic before, during construction, parades, and family-oriented Sunday events.  Proponents of the proposal claim that this can be implemented with very little cost, and can also easily be reversed if the island’s needs change.

El Director Municipal de Turismo recientemente firmó una propuesta para cerrar el tránsito de uno de los arroyos vehiculares en la Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, entre Adolfo Rosado Salas y Calle 2 Norte, algo parecido a lo que existe en nuestro puerto vecino, Playa del Carmen. La propuesta, que aún requiere un consenso general para su aprobación, cerraría uno de los arroyos vehiculares del malecón de Cozumel creando un espacio agradable para  peatones, compradores, turistas e incluso para quienes que desean hacer ejercicio. Las autoridades municipales ya han cerrado anteriormente el tránsito vehicular del malecón durante construcciones, desfiles y eventos familiares los días domingo.   Los promoventes de la propuesta afirman que esto puede implementarse a muy bajo costo y que también pueden revertirse fácilmente si cambian las necesidades de la Isla.

Clocktower Commemorative Plaque Found

The clocktower in Parque Benito Juarez, (the downtown plaza), has long been a Cozumel landmark, in fact, it’s over 100 years old, celebrating it’s birthday on Independence Day.  Back in April, the commemorative plaque was misplaced.  Early this week, the plaque was discovered hidden in a bodega and remounted.  The clocktower was inaugurated on September 15th, 1910, and installation was completed a year later.

La Torre del Reloj en el Parque Benito Juárez (el centro del zócalo) siempre ha sido un punto de referencia en Cozumel, y, con 100 años de antigüedad, celebra su aniversario el Día de la Independencia. El pasado mes de Abril se extravió la placa conmemorativa. A principios de esta semana se encontró la placa escondida en una bodega y se ha vuelto a montar. El la Torre del Reloj se inauguró el 15 de septiembre del año 1910 y su instalación concluyó un año más tarde.

Turtle Season 2012: How You Can Help

This week, biologists marked the 300th turtle nest this year.  In fact, the Municipal Department of Ecology and Environment is expecting somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 nests to be marked, making this a banner year for Cozumel turtles. 

During the nesting season, biologists and volunteers gather at Mescalito’s, on the eastern side of the island, at 9 pm to identify and mark the turtles nests as they arrive on shore to deposit their eggs.  Turtles are measured and their tracks are erased.  The evening’s activity ends at 5 am.  It’s important to note that this is not a touristic activity, but rather the focus is on the protection and consevation of a very precious Island natural resource. 

If you’re arriving from the US and have a little extra room in your suitcase, the biologists are looking for headlamps, the flashlights worn on your head, to keep your hands free, as well as rolls of fluorescent marking tape.  To find out more about the program, or to get involved,  please contact Ricardo, the Biologist from the Department of ecology,  charlesrichard527@hotmail.com or call 872 5795.

Cómo puede ayudar en la temporada de tortugas 2012

Esta semana los biólogos marcaron el 300º nido de tortugas de este año. De hecho, el Departamento Municipal de Ecología y Medio Ambiente espera marcar alrededor de 3,000 y 4,000 nidos, haciendo de este un año excepcional para las tortugas de Cozumel.

Durante la temporada de anidación, biólogos y voluntarios se reúnen a las 9 p.m. en Mezcalitos, al oriente de la isla, con el objeto de detectar y marcar nidos de las tortugas conforme éstas arriban a la playa para depositar sus huevos. Se procede a la medición de las tortugas y se borran las huellas que dejan. Las actividades nocturnas concluyen a las 5 a.m. Es importante subrayar que esta no es una actividad turística, ya que el objetivo real es la protección y conservación de un valioso recurso natural de la Isla.

Todas las noches hay espacio disponible para 10 voluntarios; sin embargo, es importante que registre su participación con anticipación en las oficinas del Departamento Municipal de Ecología y Medio Ambiente, ubicadas en la esquina de las Avenidas 65 y 11  (la entrada se encuentra sobre la 65 Ave.). Las oficinas están abiertas de lunes a viernes de 9.a.m. a 5 p.m. El donativo voluntario es de $55  dólares, los cuales se destinan a una cuenta especial, concretamente para ayudar a las tortugas que anidan en Cozumel, y contra el donativo le es entregado un recibo oficial. Se recomienda a los voluntarios vestir ropa y zapatos cómodos, traer repelente contra insectos y una chamarra ligera.  

Si usted viaja desde los Estados Unidos y le sobra algo de espacio en su maleta, los biólogos requieren linternas que se colocan en la cabeza para mantener libres sus manos, así como rollos de cinta fluorescente para marcar límites. Honey Production To Increase in Cozumel

The cultivation of honey in the Yucatan Peninsula dates all the way back to the Mayan civilizations who cultivated specific types of flowers specifically to attract bees.  In fact, the Yucatan Peninsula today is one of the world’s largest honey producers, ranking 8th in the world.  It’s no wonder that Cozumel is an ideal location to cultivate locally produced honey.  Cozumel’s Director of Economic Development has announced plans to increase the production of locally produced honey in the upcoming year.

El cultivo de la miel en la Península de Yucatán data desde los antiguos mayas quienes se dedicaron al cultivo de tipos determinados de flores específicamente para atraer a las abejas. De hecho, hoy en día la Península de Yucatán es uno de los productores más grandes de miel en el mundo, situándose en 8º lugar. No es de extrañar que Cozumel sea un sitio ideal para cultivar la miel producida localmente. El Director del Desarrollo Económico de Cozumel ha informado que para el próximo año, existen planes para aumentar la producción de miel localmente.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Bagheera the black cat in mourning….
My good friend, and our family mascot in Cozumel, Bagheera, is looking for a new home.  He was my late father’s, Patrick Lewis Jones, constant companion, and perhaps adopted my father’s character: fiercely loyal, loving, but unquestionably proud and independent individual.

Patrick first received Bagheera from the Humane Society of Cozumel about 10 years ago, he was already a 2 year old, feral outcast.  The two of them took to each other instantly, and over the years were inseparable companions.  Whenever my father would come to Miami for a visit, it was always a big production about who would look after Bagheera while he was away.

They say that dogs always remember you, but whenever I would come to Cozumel, Bagheera always recognized me, obliging me to scratch his head and rub his fluffy belly for a good long while!  Bagheera is jet black, with big yellow eyes, and a soft coat of fur.  He likes to be out of doors, but comes home when he is hungry, needs affection, or wants to sleep, and he frequently likes to crawl up on the bed at night.  He is neutered and has had all his shots, and has always been well looked-after by the local vet.

 My father recently passed away at 86 years of age, after a full and happy life, the last 20 of which he spent in Cozumel.  I must return shortly to my own home and business in Panama, and for as much as I love our cat, it would not be fair for Bagheera to be stuck in a high rise apartment, or left alone while I travel throughout Latin America on business.  He needs a good, loving home, and he will not be a bother to anyone.  Once he becomes accustomed to his new environment, he will be a new and loving companion.

A true treasure, this is what Tasha the Dog  is. She is young, approximately 9 months old, medium size weighing in at 14 kg. She came via a family that did not want her anymore, said she had too much energy, well they tied her up all the time, no wonder she had so much energy! She was also full of ticks and she has been treated for that and is now spayed, vaccinated and ready to go. Despite her rough start in life this is simply an amazing dog! She walks great on leash, gets along with all the dogs at the shelter, loves to play and loves to fetch toys. She did so well at the Humane Society's pet walk a thon event, she raised the most money for the Humane Society! She got to put her paws in the ocean at the after party, sheer joy for Tasha! She loved it! She would make a great family pet!

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Mi buen amigo y nuestra mascota familiar en Cozumel, Bagheera, está en busca de un nuevo hogar. Era el constante acompañante de mi finado padre, Patrick Lewis Jones, y tal vez adopto el carácter de mi padre: increíblemente leal, cariñoso, y, sin lugar a dudas, ufano e independiente.

La Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel entregó Bagheera a Patrick desde hace casi 10 años; en aquel entonces ya contaba con 2 años de edad y era un indómito abandonado. Los dos congeniaron al instante, y a lo largo de los años fueron compañeros inseparables. Siempre que mi padre venía a Miami de visita, era un lío colosal encontrar a alguien que se hiciera cargo de Bagheera durante su ausencia.

Se dice que los perros siempre nos recuerdan, pero cuando visitaba Cozumel, ¡Bagheera siempre me reconocía obligándome a rascarle la cabeza y su esponjada panza por largo tiempo! El color de Bagheera es negro azabache, con ojos grandes, amarillos y suave pelaje. Le gusta estar afuera y regresa a casa cuando está hambriento,  cuando necesita cariño o quiere dormir, y por la noche con frecuencia se sube a la cama. Está esterilizado, cuenta con todas sus vacunas y siempre ha estado bien atendido por el veterinario local.
 

En fechas recientes falleció mi padre a la edad de 86 años, después de que durante los últimos 20 años vivió una vida plena y feliz en Cozumel. Debo regresar pronto a casa y a mi negocio en Panamá, y por mucho que ame a nuestro gato, no sería justo para Bagheera permanecer encerrado en un departamento en un edificio elevado, o dejarlo solo cuando me sea necesario viajar por cuestiones de negocios a lo largo y ancho de Latinoamérica. Bagheera necesita un buen hogar, lleno de amor y no será una molestia para nadie. Una vez que se acostumbre a su nuevo ambiente será un compañero nuevo y cariñoso.

Tasha es un verdadero tesoro. Es joven, alrededor de 9 meses de edad, de tamaño medio, pesa 14 kg. Ella llego a través de una familia que ya no la quería; dijeron que tenía demasiada energía y la amarraban todo el tiempo… ¡he ahí la razón de toda su energía! Estaba cundida de garrapatas, de las que ha recibido tratamiento y está esterilizada, vacunada y lista para irse. A pesar del difícil comienzo de su vida, ¡es una perra increíble! Camina muy bien con la correa, se lleva bien con todos los perros en el albergue, le encanta jugar y le gusta ir a buscar juguetes. Le fue tan bien en el evento de la caminata de mascotas organizado por la Sociedad Humanitaria, ¡que fue la que más dinero recaudó para la Sociedad Humanitaria! Después de la fiesta colocó sus patas en el mar, ¡alegría total para Tasha! ¡Le encantó! ¡Será una gran mascota para la familia!

How I came to Call Cozumel Home: A New Series by Island Residents

How I ran away from home at 33.

I was on a business trip here in Cozumel, fell in love with the Island, returned to the states and hatched my plan to move.

Did my homework, and due to my experience in Hotel Sales, was able to find a job before I moved (although I made half of what I was accustomed to). Got myself debt free thru some hard work and made the leap.

I felt like my life was going nowhere.... so I did something about it. What I wanted to do was different from what everyone at home in Boston did. But just because it was different, didn’t make it wrong, it just meant that my “normal” was going to be different from theirs.

Now, 13 years later;  I am married to a man I love and admire, we have a wonderful son,  and I work at what I love: embarrassing my 6 year old, doing what I can to help out at DIF, Tadeo's Shoes , and real estate with Casas Cozumel.

Now I cannot imagine my life any other way... if you dont like your definition of "normal" - CHANGE IT.

Has it been tough? Sometimes. Frustrating? No doubt. Do I miss my family and friends? Definitely. Would I recommend it for everyone? Nope.  But it was the best decision I ever made for ME.

I found myself caught up in the rat race, and decided to change gears....I see what has gone on in the states, and the way I was living my life, and didn’t like it. If I had been in the states during this financial crisis, I would have been bankrupt by now. I would never be able to afford to live the quality of life that I have here.

Granted, there are trade- offs, but to me the positives outweigh the negatives.

Lots of oddities living on an Island in another country.  But an eye opener. Here, life is without a safety net. There is no govt. agency that will swing in and save you. If you want to eat, you work. Period. I have seen poverty that has broken me to tears, and wealth that you only see in movies. I love having the “she’s just a crazy foreigner” pass. I still don’t eat seafood, and I have never liked Mexican food – and have still managed to survive.

Here you become as involved or uninvolved as you care to.  You make decisions that are true to your own compass. You learn the true meaning of humanity, and what you are capable of. What your limits are, how much you can help others, and where to draw the line.

My advice.... not for the faint of heart, do not jump without looking, do your homework... and, if your inner compass points you in that direction... change your "normal".

Cómo e escapé de casa a los 33 años de edad.

Me encontraba de viaje de negocios en Cozumel, me enamoré de la isla, regresé a los Estados Unidos y maquiné un plan para mudarme.

Hice mi tarea y, gracias a mi experiencia en ventas en hoteles, me fue posible encontrar trabajo antes de mudarme (aún cuando mi salario sería la mitad de lo que estaba acostumbrada). Me liberé de mis deudas trabajando fuerte y di el salto.

Sentí que mi vida no tenía ningún sentido… así que hice algo a respecto. Lo que deseaba era hacer algo distinto a lo que todos hacían en casa, Boston. Y sólo porque era diferente, no era malo; tan sólo significaba que mi “normal” iba a ser diferente a la de ellos.

Ahora, después 13 años estoy casada con un hombre al que amo y al que admiro, tenemos un hijo maravilloso y trabajo en lo que me gusta: molestar a mi hijo de 6 años de edad, haciendo lo posible por ayudar al DIF, Tadeo's Shoes y dedicarme a bienes raíces con Casas Cozumel.

Ya no imagino mi vida de otra manera… si no te gusta tu definición de “normal” – CÁMBIALA.

¿Qué ha sido difícil? En algunas ocasiones. ¿Frustrante? No cabe duda. ¿Qué si extraño a mi familia y a mis amigos? Definitivamente. ¿Se lo recomendaría a todos? No. Pero fue la mejor decisión que tome para MÍ.

Estaba atrapada en el bullicio y decidí cambiar la velocidad… Veo lo que ha surgido en Estados Unidos y la forma en la que vivía mi vida, y no me gustó. Si hubiera estado en Estados Unidos durante esta crisis financiera, estaría en bancarrota. Nunca más hubiera podido vivir la calidad de vida que tengo aquí.

Cierto es que hay ventajas y desventajas, pero para mí las cosas positivas superan las negativas.

Hay un montón peculiaridades en una Isla ubicada en otro país; pero son una gran revelación. Aquí la vida no tiene una red de protección. No existe una dependencia de gobierno que intervenga para salve. Si quieres comer, trabajas. Punto. He visto pobreza que me ha hecho llorar, y riqueza que sólo se ve en las películas. Me encanta escuchar “sólo es una extranjera chiflada”. Aún no como mariscos y nunca me ha gustado la comida Mexicana, sin embargo, me las he ingeniado para subsistir.

Aquí uno participa o no, tanto como a uno le interese hacerlo. Se toman decisiones que son el rumbo verdadero de tu propia brújula. Se aprende el verdadero significado de humanidad y de lo que uno es capaz de lograr; cuáles son tus límites, qué tanto puedes ayudar a otros y en donde pintas la raya.

Mi consejo… no es para los blandos de corazón, no se abalancen sin ver, hagan su tarea…  y  si su brújula interna apunta hacia ese rumbo… cambien su “normal”

Venta de objetos usados del DIF – Junio 15 – El DIF tendrá una venta objetos usados en sus instalaciones ubicadas en la 30 Avenida; lo que se logre recaudar será utilizado en una cirugía para retirar un tumor de la pierna de una pequeña. Oñuki tiene 11 años y realmente necesita de nuestro apoyo. Pueden dejar donativos de CUALQUIER especie en el DIF  de la 30 Avenida, o ponerse en contacto con Nancy Murray en solodive@msn.com si desean mayor información.
