32 Cruise Ships This Week Call into Cozumel

Cozumel Cruise Ship High Season is in full swing with 32 ships scheduled to call into port.  This is one more than the previous 2 weeks.  All three of Cozumel’s cruise piers – Puerta Maya, TMM/SSA International, and Punta Langosta – will each see at least 8 arrivals this week, with Puerta Maya receiving 13 liners.

This is the same number of ships that called into port last week, and well over the “20 in Port”  that constitutes Cozumel High season.  This busy period typically runs from mid-November through mid-April.

Los Cruceros de Cozumel están en temporada alta con 32 naves programadas. Los tres muelles de cruceros de Cozumel - Puerta Maya, TMM / SSA Internacional, y Punta Langosta - tendrán al menos 8 llegadas en cada uno de ellos esta semana, en Puerta Maya habrá 13 líneas.

Este es el mismo número de barcos que la semana pasada, por encima de los 20 barcos que es habitual en Cozumel en temporada alta. Este período de intensa actividad normalmente se extiende desde mediados de noviembre hasta mediados de abril.

Fish & Seafood Consumption on the Rise: Lent Attributed

Sales in both fish and seafood are on the rise in Cozumel, and according to the Administrator for the Municipal Market, this increase is partially attributed to the Catholic observance of Lent.  Sales of locally caught seafood is as much as 15% higher on Wednesdays and Fridays, the days when during Lent it is traditional to give up red meat dishes. 

Sales seem to be split evenly between higher priced fish such as fillets and Grouper and more economical fish such as Hogfish and Snapper.

Cuaresma: Aumenta el consumo de pescado y marisco

La venta de pescado y marisco está en aumento en Cozumel, según el administrador del mercado municipal, este aumento se debe a la cercanía de la Cuaresma. La venta de pescado y marisco local es hasta un 15% más alto en miércoles y viernes, los días en los que es tradicional renunciar a platos de carne roja.

La venta se iguala entre los pescados más caros como el mero y el más económico, como el pargo.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Michellin -  Male dog, 2 years old, weight 8.3 kg. Arrived on Feb-16-16. He was a stray dog that lived in Colonia 10 de Abril for at least 2 months, there he got fed by the neighbors but one day he was run over and was reported for rescue. Fortunately, he didn’t receive any major injuries and now he recovers at HS. He is active and curious.

 Diana – Female cat, 4 months, weights 1.6 kg. Arrived on Feb-21-16. She was brought to HS because she was found laying on the street with a injured hind leg and they got worried that she might had a fracture. Luckily she didnt had anything serious and now she plays with other kittens at the Baby Cattery. She is super relaxed.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Michelín - perro macho, de 2 años, 8,3 kg. Llegado el 16 de febrero de 2016. Era un perro callejero que vivió en la Colonia 10 de Abril durante 2 meses, fue atropellado y se reportó para rescatarlo.  Afortunadamente, no fue herido de gravedad y ahora se recupera favorablemente en la HS. Está perfectamente recuperado.

Diana - Gata hembra, 4 meses, pesa 1,6 kg. Llegó el 21 de febrero de 2016. Fue llevada a la HS porque la encontraron tirada en la calle con la pata trasera lesionada, pudiendo haber sufrido una fractura. Por suerte no fue nada grave. La gatita está tranquila y recuperada.

Pipeline Workers Discover Archeological Sites in Chihuahua

Pipeline workers in the northern state of Chihuahua came across an unusual discovery:  bones of a dinosaur, mammoth horse and a camel.  The odd discovery was reported to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH)  who will study the remains in an attempt to date which time period these animal remains belong.

Los trabajadores del oleoducto en el norteño estado de Chihuahua encontraron un inusual descubrimiento: los huesos de un dinosaurio, un mamut y un camello. El extraño descubrimiento fue informado al Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), que estudiará los restos  para determinar a la época a la que pertenecen.

9th Annual Sacred Mayan Journey Slated for May 22 – 23

Over 200 participants are expected for the 9th annual Sacred Mayan Crossing which will be reenacted May 22nd and 23rd.   The 2-day event recreates ancient ritual pilgrimages by the Yucatan peninsula’s original inhabitants from Xcaret to Cozumel.  The celebration, which will start at Xcaret, where participants reenact rituals to the goddess Ix Chel, as they wait for the first rays of dawn, when they launch their wooden canoes toward Cozumel.  After paddling the 12 nautical mile crossing, offerings are made to the goddess, who sends a message which is returned via the canoeists return to Playa del Carmen on the mainland. 

Here in Cozumel, the celebrations will take place at Chankanaab National Park, and be overseen by the “Fundacion de Parques y Museos Cozumel (FPMC).”  For more information, check out the event’s webpage.  

9ª Travesía Sagrada Maya Programado para el 22 y 23 de mayo

Se esperan más de 200 participantes en la 9ª  Travesía Maya Sagrada, que se celebra el 22 y 23 de mayo. El evento de 2 días recrea las antiguas peregrinaciones de los habitantes originales de la península de Yucatán, de Xcaret a Cozumel. La celebración comienza en Xcaret, donde los participantes recrean los rituales de la diosa Ix Chel, mientras esperan  los primeros rayos del amanecer, cuando lanzan sus canoas de madera hacia Cozumel. Después de la travesía de 12 millas náuticas, se hacen ofrendas a la diosa, que envía un mensaje que es devuelto a través de los piragüistas  que regresan a Playa del Carmen.

Las celebraciones tendrán lugar en el Parque Nacional Chankanaab de Cozumel, será supervisado por la "Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC)". Para obtener más información, echa un vistazo a la página web del evento.

Papantla Flyers in Cozumel – Did you know that the only place you can see these daredevil flyers in Cozumel is Discover Mexico Park?  They perform a ceremonial rite in honor of the Sun God, for fertility and a good harvest.   This 1,500 year old ritual is performed by a “caporal,” or musician, and 4 daredevils or “voladores,” who represent the 4 elements.  Together they climb a 90-foot pole, and while the “caporal” plays a musical offering to the Gods, the 4 elements launch themselves backwards -   secured only by a rope tied to one ankle - toward the ground.  The 4 “voladores” slowly and gracefully descend making exactly 13 revolutions around the pole, which represents the 52-year time span of the pre-Hispanic cosmic cycle (4 x 13 = 52).  For more information on visiting the park and seeing the Papantla Flyers in action, visit the Discover Mexico Park website.

Voladores de Papantla en Cozumel - ¿Usted sabía que el único lugar donde se puede ver voladores es en  Discover Mexico Park Cozumel? Llevan a cabo un rito ceremonial en honor al Dios Sol, para la fertilidad y la buena cosecha. Este ritual tiene  1.500 años, se lleva a cabo por un "caporal", o músico, y 4 temerarios o "voladores", que representan los 4 elementos. Juntos suben un poste de 90 pies, y mientras el "caporal"  toca música para los dioses, los 4 voladores se lanzan hacia atrás - asegurados solamente por una cuerda atada a un tobillo -. Los 4 "voladores" poco a poco y con gracia descienden haciendo exactamente 13 vueltas alrededor del palo, lo que representa el intervalo de tiempo de 52 años del ciclo cósmico prehispánico (4 x 13 = 52).
