Newly Remodeled Downtown Benito Juarez Park Now Has Free Internet

City officials have announced that the newly remodeled downtown Benito Juarez park now features free wireless internet.  The wi-fi has increased park traffic for both visitors and residents, and can also be used for public events and concerts.   The free open signal is part of the final details needed to complete the entire project. 

New colorful signage was also recently added, and once the remaining few particulars have been attended to, the park can be officially inaugurated.  Although no definite date has been set, the ceremony is expected to take place before the pre-election publicity ban takes place.

Funcionarios municipales han anunciado que el recientemente remodelado parque Benito Juárez ubicado en el centro de la Ciudad, ya cuenta con servicio gratuito de internet inalámbrico. El servicio Wi-Fi ha aumentado el tráfico de visitantes y locales; y también puede usarse para eventos públicos y conciertos. La señal abierta y gratuita forma parte de los detalles que faltaban para completar el proyecto.

De igual manera se han añadido coloridas señalizaciones; y una vez que se hayan atendido algunos pormenores, el parque puede inaugurarse oficialmente. Pese a que aún no se ha fijado una fecha, se espera que la ceremonia se realice antes de iniciar la prohibición pre-electoral.

Cruise Ship Snorkeler Drowns In Cozumel

A second cruise ship passenger has died while snorkeling this week in Cozumel, during the Easter holidays.  The passenger, a male in his 50s from the United States was on an organized shore excursion when it was noticed that he had become separated from the group – perhaps due to the water current -  and was found floating unresponsive on the surface.  Although emergency response was summoned sadly the patient presented no vital signs.

The Saturday prior another male passenger in his 50s entered the sea immediately after eating and reportedly had difficulties with the strong current and was discovered moments later near the buoys at KM 10 on the south coastal road. 

It’s important to note that while there are strong currents on the island, which can at times prove dangerous, it’s important to stay within the designated snorkel areas and wear floatation – such  as a snorkel vest – within the Cozumel Marine Park.

Se ahoga en Cozumel pasajero de buque turístico que practicaba esnórquel

Esta semana en Cozumel durante las vacaciones de Pascua, fallece un segundo pasajero de un buque turístico. El pasajero, un hombre de alrededor de 50 años de edad procedente de los EUA, participaba en una excursión cuando se percataron que se había separado del grupo – posiblemente debido a la corriente marina – y fue encontrado flotando e inconsciente. A pesar de haber llamado a los servicios de emergencia, el paciente lamentablemente no presentaba signos vitales.

El sábado anterior un pasajero también en sus cincuentas, entró al mar inmediatamente después de comer; se dice que tuvo dificultades con la fuerte corriente y momentos después fue hallado cerca de las boyas en el Km. 10 de la Carretera Costera Sur.

Vale la pena hacer la observación que en tanto que hay corrientes marinas fuertes en la Isla que en ocasiones pueden  ser peligrosas, es importante permanecer dentro de las áreas designadas en el Parque Marino de Cozumel para la práctica de esnórquel y utilizar chaleco de flotación, tal como el utilizado para esnórquel.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Pilly – Female puppy, 2 months, weights 1.1 kg. Arrived on Mar-6-16. This tiny baby was with a drunk man that tried to sell her in Colonia Centro. A family took her from him and shelter her in their house for a night but they couldnt keep her because they have a pet on their own. She is a super puppy, very brave and spoiled who barks loudly to get attention.

Puppies -   We have tons of tiny cute puppies right now and in a month they should be ready  for new homes  - so come by the shelter, cuddle a few and choose your next family member! 

Baldo – Male kitten , 2.5 months, weights 500 gr. Arrived on Feb-29-16. He was found by a young couple outside her place in Colonia Urba close to the airport, resting in a carpet. He was crying and was pick up and they began to ask the neighbors just in case he was lost. Nobody knew him so he was left at HS for care. He is super curious and playful.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Pilly – Cachorra de 2 meses de edad. Pesa 1.1 Kg. Llegó el 6 de marzo, 2016. Esta pequeña bebé se encontraba con un hombre ebrio que trataba de venderla en la colonia Centro. Una familia se la quitó y le dio albergue durante la noche, mas no les era posible quedarse con ella pues ya cuentan con una mascota. Es una súper cachorra; muy audaz y consentida, y ladra para llamar la atención.

Cachorros – En este momento contamos con muchísimos cachorros y dentro de un mes deben estar listos para ir a sus nuevos hogares. Así que vengan al albergue; abracen a algunos de éstos y, ¡elijan al nuevo miembro que será parte de su familia!

Baldo – gato de 2.5 meses de edad. Pesa 500 gr. Llegó en Feb-29-16. Una pareja joven lo encontró en las afueras de su casa en la colonia Urba, cerca del aeropuerto, descansando sobre un tapete. Lloraba; lo cargaron y comenzaron a preguntar entre los vecinos si pertenecía a alguno de ellos. Nadie lo conocía por lo que lo trajeron a la Sociedad Humanitaria para que se le dieran los cuidados correspondientes. Es sumamente curioso y juguetón. 

Estos y muchos animalitos mas te esperan en el refugio, recuerda visitarnos para conocerlos, uno nunca sabe, podrías encontrar a un compañero muy especial. Para obtener más información póngase en contacto con pets@humanecozumel.org.

18 Cubans Rescued After 22 Days at Sea by Cruise Ship

The Cruise ship “Brilliance of the Seas” rescued 18 Cuban refugees after a harrowing 22 days at sea.  Sadly, there were originally there were 27 castaways but after the torturous journey, 9 of the boatmates died and were thrown overboard.   The Cubans were taken into custody when the Cruise ship docked into the SSA International pier.  It was reported that 2 men and 2 women were in need of medical treatment.  Upon recovery they will be transferred to the INM center in Chetumal for eventual repatriation 

Después de 22 días en la mar, un buque turístico rescata a 18 cubanos

El buque turístico “Brilliance of the Seas” rescató a 18 refugiados cubanos después de 22 angustiosos días de estar a la deriva en la mar. Es lamentable que después de una tortuosa travesía, de los 27 originales fallecieron 9 y fueron arrojados al mar. Una vez que el buque atracó en el muelle Internacional SSA, los cubanos fueron puestos bajo custodia. Se reportó que 2 hombres y 2 mujeres requirieron tratamiento médico. Al recuperarse fueron transferidos al centro del INM en Chetumal para finalmente ser repatriados.

La Mentirosa: A Restaurant Review  By Autumn La Boheme

You may be familiar with the restaurant La Mentirosa, as it has been a local favorite since 2000 when it operated under the name La Morena. My husband remembers going there at night as a teenager- hopefully to enjoy the food and stay out of trouble! 
The restaurant was closed in 2009 when the owner passed, but his son Franklin Benjamin took over ownership, re-designed the restaurant, and held a Grand Opening to the new La Mentriosa on March 9 - a touching tribute to his father who passed that same day 7 years earlier.

Franklin and his wife Elena run the restaurant and welcome tourists and locals alike, couples and families, young and younger! The design of the building is light and airy- white walls adorned with local artwork and a wide open patio area outside. There is a fooseball table and a pool table that my kids enjoyed, and the covered palapa will soon set the stage for live music, comedy shows, theatrical shows, and more.

There is plenty of seating for even a busy Friday or Saturday night, and patrons have the option of sitting in the main dining area, the outdoor patio or even the covered balcony upstairs. The staff is attentive and helpful. They speak both Spanish and English for those of us still learning to communicate with our fellow Cozumelenos. The recipes and menu items are inspired by owner Franklin’s mother Clarabella, who made the most delicious tamales for the Grand Opening. The chef, who has experience working in both Mexico and the US, is highly-skilled and trained to prepare the recipes precisely as Mama Clarabella cited them in order to keep the regional Yucatan roots intact.

While you wait for your meal to be prepared during the hours of 12 PM and 5 PM, the wait staff brings out specially-prepared snacks with your drink order in a true cantina-style. The snacks were made with natural fresh ingredients- jicama with cilantro, boiled potatoes with onion and cilantro, and chips and salsa- all much appreciated by vegetarian guests such as myself!

When I spoke to Franklin about the most important message and experience he wanted his guests to receive, he explained that the preparation of the food and drinks is his top priority. He wants his guests to feel confident that their meals are prepared well and authentically, allowing them to get a true taste of recipes he grew up with. He wants his guests to feel like they are at home- a place where they can be comfortable to eat, drink, relax, listen to music, and enjoy art. He says he is also very thankful to his wife Elena who is 100% supportive of him. We can also all thank her for the feminine touch in the décor and design of the restaurant.

Definitely go check them out, and enjoy their margaritas- a must-have while in Cozumel!  La Mentirosa is located on Avenue 10 entre 3 and 5 sur and are open from 11 am – 11 pm.  For more information, please check out their facebook page.

La Mentirosa, una reseña de restaurantes  Por Autumn La Boheme

Es posible que conozca el restaurante La Mentirosa, ya que ha sido uno de los favoritos desde el año 2000 operando con el nombre La Morena. Mi esposo recuerda que en su adolescencia iba al restaurante, ¡con suerte para disfrutar de la comida y mantenerse alejado de dificultades! Este restaurante cerró sus puertas en 2009, año que falleció el propietario. Sin embargo, su hijo Franklin Benjamín se hizo cargo y rediseño el restaurante. La Gran Inauguración de La Mentirosa fue el 9 de marzo con un conmovedor homenaje a su padre quien falleciera ese mismo día 7 años antes.

Franklin y su esposa Elena se hacen cargo del restaurante, dando la bienvenida tanto a turistas como a los locales,  parejas y familias, jóvenes, y ¡a los aún más jóvenes! El diseño del lugar es suave, sus muros son de ligero color blanco adornados con obras de artistas locales y un amplio patio exterior en la parte trasera. Mis hijos disfrutaron el futbolín y mesa de billar, y dentro de poco tiempo el área cubierta por la palapa servirá de escenario para música en vivo, espectáculos de comedia, teatrales y más. 

Cuentan con muchas mesas incluso para las noches de los días viernes y sábado, y los comensales tienen la opción de ocupar una mesa en el comedir principal, en el patio exterior o incluso en el balcón cubierto en el segundo piso. El personal es muy atento y servicial. Hablan español e inglés, para aquellos de nosotros que aún aprendemos a comunicarnos con nuestros colegas cozumeleños. Las recetas y platillos en el menú están inspirados por Clarabella, la mamá de Franklin, quien preparó los tamales más deliciosos para la Gran Inauguración. El Chef, quien ha trabajado tanto en México como en los EUA, está altamente calificado para preparar las recetas tal como las indica Mamá Clarabella para así mantener intactas las raíces yucatecas.

En tanto usted espera que lleguen sus alimentos entre las 12 pm y 5 pm, el personal de servicio le traerá botana especialmente preparada para acompañar su bebida al estilo de una verdadera cantina. La botana se prepara con ingredientes naturales y frescos como jícama con cilantro, papas hervidas acompañadas de cebolla y cilantro, así como totopos y salsa, ¡bien recibidos por clientes vegetarianos como yo!

Cuando platiqué con Franklin sobre cuál era el mensaje más importante y experiencia que deseaba que sus clientes recibieran, él explicó que su mayor prioridad estaba en la preparación de los alimentos y bebidas. Quiere que sus clientes tengan la confianza que sus alimentos se preparan bien y de manera auténtica, permitiéndoles obtener el verdadero sabor de las recetas con las cuales él creció. Quiere que sus comensales se sientan en casa, un sitio donde sientan que pueden comer y beber con comodidad, relajarse, escuchar música y disfrutar del arte. Indica que está muy agradecido con su esposa Elena, quien le apoyo 100%. También debemos agradecer a Elena el toque femenino en la decoración y diseño del restaurante.

Definitivamente deben constatarlo y disfrutar sus margaritas, ¡no se la puede perder mientras está en Cozumel! La Mentirosa se ubica en Avenida 10 entre Calles 3 y 5 Sur; abre de 11 am a 11 pm. Para mayor información, por favor echen un vistazo a su página en Facebook.
