10th Annual Sacred Mayan Crossing Reenactment This Weekend

This weekend marks the 10th annual reenactment of the Mayan Sacred crossing from the Yucatan Peninsula to Cozumel.  Called the “The Evolution of the Warrior,” forty canoes are expected to row the 31 KM journey round trip from Xcaret Park on the mainland to Chankanaab Park in Cozumel.  

Four hundred people, 214 men and 186 women from several different countries, are registered to recreate the way in which the ancient Mayans  paid tribute to the goddess IXchel, deity of the moon and fertility.

The event is scheduled to begin  on Friday, May 20th at Xcaret where there will be a ritual farewell dance ceremony starting at 5:30 AM.  The canoes, weather permitting are expected to reach Cozumel approximately 1 PM.  That evening, in Cozumel, a private meditation ceremony is scheduled

On Saturday, May 21 the 40 canoes will set off, once again, from Chankanaab Park en route to Xcaret, where the closing dance ceremonies will take place. 

This is the 10th year of the reenactment, which originally started with five 5-person canoes and eleven 10-person canoes.   A total of 2,230 canoes with rowers from 22 countries have participated.  For more information, check out the event’s webpage.

Este fin de semana se lleva a cabo la 10ª representación de la Travesía Sagrada Maya

Este próximo fin de semana se realiza la 10ª edición de la Travesía Sagrada Maya desde la Península de Yucatán hasta Cozumel. Con el nombre “La Evolución del Guerrero”, se espera que cuarenta canoas realicen el trayecto de 31 kms., viaje redondo, desde Xcaret en tierra firme hasta el Parque de Chankanaab en Cozumel.

Cuatrocientas personas, 214 hombres y 186 mujeres, de diversos países se han registrado para representar la forma que los mayas rendían homenaje a Ix Chel, diosa de la luna y fertilidad.

El evento comienza el viernes 20 de mayo en Xcaret con la danza ritual de despedida a las 5:30 a.m. Si el clima lo permite, se espera que las canoas lleguen a Cozumel alrededor de la 1 p.m. Esa noche habrá una ceremonia de meditación privada.

El sábado 21 de mayo, las 40 canoas zarparán desde el Parque Chankanaab hacia Xcaret, donde se realizarán las ceremonias de cierre.

Este es el 10ª año que se realiza la representación la cual inicio con cinco canoas de 5 personas y once canoas de 10 personas. Han participado un total de 2,230 canoas con remeros procedentes de 22 países. Para mayor información, visite la página web del evento.

2016 Cozumel Municipal Turtle Program Outlined   by Biol. Lemuel Vega

Today, May 17, the local government and the Ecology Department are officially opening the 2016-nesting season; a season when we gladly look forward for your participation in the protection of the sea turtle. Your donation will be directly destined to the turtle preservation program as well as to its different actions and activities that have made this a very successful program. These activities are not “tours”; the activities have an educational purpose where you will learn, know and, most of all, become aware why it is so important to preserve marine turtles in Cozumel. We are certain that this will be a life experience and our turtles will be very grateful.  In order to have a proper control of those visiting each of the programs, the local government has implemented the sale of bracelets to identify every participant of an activity, and thus accomplish a clear process. For your bracelet, come to the Ecology Department the City Hall.

Three different programs comprise the marine turtle protection program:

The first activity is “Search and Rescue of Turtle Nests”. This activity takes place in nests that have hatched and emerged; it consists of uncovering the nest and extracting eggshells of turtles that have begun their path toward the sea, making a total count. Total eggshells determine the umber of hatchlings that have to the sea. There is a possibility of still finding some live hatchlings in the nest; at the end, these will be released. The importance of this activity is that you help hatchlings that remained in the nest reach the ocean and stop them from dying in the nest. The cost for this activity is $25 North American dollars, children and adults. You must have your own transportation as Search and Rescue changes daily. We meet at San Martin beach and start at 3:30 p.m. 

The second activity is the “Hatchlings Release” for $25 North American dollars, children and adults. Here you will observe how the hatchlings emerge from the nest to the surface, running towards the ocean, avoiding predators and ready to start their life cycle. Trained volunteers will guide you through the preservation of turtles. The activity starts at 5:00 p.m. It is important to be there early to get the bracelets; and if we do not yet have them, take a preservation program briefing. 

The third activity is “Night Nesting Program”; the cost: $40 North American dollars, children and adults. This 2-hour activity starts at 10:30 p.m. Here you will observe and learn how marine turtles come out of the sea to fulfill their reproductive cycle placing their eggs in the area, in an unexplainable manner that nature has adapted for them. This activity takes place in full darkness, as this is necessary for adult turtles to come out of the sea.   

Every activity includes a brief induction about the life of marine turtles and the protection program this committee has carries out, and the activity is performed with the support and company of experts on marine turtles. Our activities are mainly for educational purposes, hence the importance of acting in respect and adhering to the standards in place while the activity takes place.

The meeting site is San Martin beach on the eastern coast of the Island; therefore, one’s own transportation is required.

For the Cleaning and Rescue and Hatchling Releasing activities bring comfortable shows and clothes; consider that even we still have many hours of sun and a cap will become necessary. To the extent possible avoid using sun protection or bug repellents, or, if need be, use environmentally friendly or biodegradable. For the night monitoring activity we recommend long sleeves and avoid dark colored clothes, as there could be mosquitos during the activity. To the extent possible, avoid the use of repellent.  

Given that this is an activity, consider the times; nature has the last word over out activities; it might start a few minutes earlier or later or, as well, could extend or shorten depending on the needs. Therefore we ask you to be tolerant with the times. If you are a Mexican national there is no need to pay for the access but it is important and necessary that you contact is to consider your space in our activity.

Ya está oficialmente en marcha la temporada 2016 de las tortugas   por Biol. Lemuel Vega

Hoy 17 de mayo, el Gobierno municipal y la Dirección de Ecología inauguran formalmente la temporada de anidación 2016, temporada en la gustosamente esperamos tu participación en la protección a la tortuga marina, tu donativo se destinara directamente en el programa de conservación de las tortugas y sus diferentes acciones y actividades que por más de 25 años han hecho de este, un programa exitoso. Estas actividades no son “Excursiones”, son actividades con un fin educativo en la que aprenderás, conocerás y sobre todo enteras porque es importante conservar las tortugas marinas en Cozumel, seguros estamos que esta será una experiencia de vida y nuestras tortugas te lo agradecerán. Con el fin de un buen control de los asistentes a cada uno de los programas, el gobierno municipal ha implementado la venta de brazaletes para identificar a cada uno de los asistentes a tal actividad y con ello llevar un proceso transparente, para adquirir su brazalete debes acercarte al Palacio Municipal, en la Dirección de Ecología.

El programa de conservación de tortugas marinas consta de 3 programas diferentes:

La primera actividad es “Búsqueda y Rescate de Nidos de Tortugas”. Actividad que desarrolla con nidos que han eclosionado y emergido, esta actividad consta en destapar el nido y extraer los cascarones de las tortugas del nido que en días anteriores han iniciado su curso hacia el mar y hacer un conteo total, el número de cascarones determina el número de crías que se han  ido al mar, existe la posibilidad de encontrar crías aun vivas dentro del nido el cual al final de la actividad serán liberas, la importancia de esta actividad se basa en que con tu contribución ayudas a las crías que se quedaron en el fondo del nido a llegar al mar y evitas mueran dentro del nido. El costo de esta actividad es $25 dólares estadounidenses para los niños y los adultos. Debe contar con su propio medio de transporte ya que la Búsqueda y Rescate cambian diariamente. Es necesario estar en Playa San Martin y la actividad inicia a las 3:30 pm.

La segunda actividad es la Liberación de Crías cuyo costo es $20 dólares estadounidenses para los niños y los adultos. Actividad en la que de forma natural observaras como un nido de tortugas emerge a la superficie e inician una carrera para llegar al mar y evitar a los depredadores para iniciar su ciclo de vida. Actividad en la que serás guiado por voluntarios capacitados en la conservación de las tortugas. La actividad inicia a las 5:00 pm por lo que es importante estar antes para adquirir tus brazaletes en case de no tenerlos aun y tomar la inducción al programa de conservación

La tercera actividad es el Programa de Anidación Nocturna. El costo es $40 dólares estadounidenses para los niños y los adultos. Esta actividad inicia a las 10:30 p.m. tiene una duración aproximada de 2 horas, actividad en la que observaras y conocerás como las tortugas marinas salen del mar a cumplir con su ciclo reproductivo al depositar sus huevos en la área de una forma inexplicable que la naturaleza las ha adaptado, esta actividad se desarrolla completamente en la obscuridad dado que son las circunstancias necesarias para que las tortugas adultas puedan salir del mar.

Cada una de las actividades incluyen una breve inducción a la vida de las tortugas marinas y al programa de protección que este comité realiza y la actividad se desarrolla con el apoyo y acompañamiento de expertos en tortugas marinas, nuestras actividades son con fines educativas, por lo que es importante conducirnos con respeto y en apego a las reglas que se pongan durante la actividad.

El punto de reunión es Playa San Martin en la costa oriental de la isla por lo que es necesario contar con transporte propio.

Para las actividades de Limpieza y Rescate y Liberación de crías puede traer ropa y zapatos cómodos, tenga en cuenta que aún tenemos horas de sol por lo que una gorra será necesaria, en la medida de lo posible evite el uso de bloqueadores o repelentes o procure sean amigables con el ambiente o biodegradables.  Para la actividad de monitoreo nocturno recomendamos ropa de manga larga y evitar el uso de ropa negra dado que puede haber mosquitos durante la actividad, en la medida de lo posible evite el uso de repelente.
Dado que es una actividad tenga consideración en los tiempos, la naturaleza es la que tiene la última palabra en nuestras actividades, podría ser que se adelante por unos minutos o se retrase, de igual forma prolongarse o acortarse según sea la necesidad,  por lo que le pedimos sea tolerante con los tiempos, si eres mexicano no es necesario el paga para el acceso a la actividad, pero si es importante y necesario nos contactes para saber de tu asistencia y tenerte en cuenta en nuestra actividad.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Rastas - Rastas was found by Michaela Velasco all by himself on the highway by the zipline park. He stayed with her for a week but couldn’t adapt to life in a small studio apartment. He was turned in to the HSCI staff so that he could find a forever home with room for him to play and spin around. He is super happy and playful, loves to roll on his own when excited.

Fercho – Male cat, 1 year old.  Fercho was  found hiding in a flower pot, hiding from everyone.  He was super shy when he arrived, but the HSCI staff and volunteers managed to coax him out so much that he’s one of the most talkative cats we have  If you’re on the hunt for some chatty personality, Fercho is your guy!

Mascotas de la Semana de la Socieddad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel

Rastas – Rastas fue encontrado por Michaela Velasco mientras andaba solo sobre la carretera cerca del parque de tirolesas. Se quedó con ella durante una semana pero no se adaptó a la vida en un departamento pequeño. Fue entregado al personal de la Sociedad Humanitaria para que pueda encontrar un hogar permanente, con suficiente espacio para que juegue y de vueltas. Es un perro feliz y juguetón; le encanta rodar cuando se emociona.

Fercho – Gato de 1 año de edad. Fercho fue encontrado en una maceta, ocultándose de todos. Era sumamente tímido cuando llegó, pero el personal de la Sociedad Humanitaria y los voluntarios lo animaron tanto que ahora es uno de los gatos más parlanchines que tenemos. Si anda en busca de alguien con una personalidad muy platicadora, ¡Fercho es su chico!

Estos y muchos animalitos mas te esperan en el refugio, recuerda visitarnos para conocerlos, uno nunca sabe, podrías encontrar a un compañero muy especial. Para obtener más información póngase en contacto con pets@humanecozumel.org.

Humane Society of Cozumel Island Volunteer Program   by Lisa Ramirez, President HSCI

The Humane Society of Cozumel Island would like to welcome Joei StGermain to its scheduled volunteer rotation.  Joei has been a regular at the HSCI over the past few years lending a hand when and wherever needed.  She will now serve as our liaison when people come to the HSCI looking to spend part of their day as a volunteer or just to drop off donations and take a tour.  The HSCI is looking for more able bodies to work in to the volunteer rotation.  This means you would be on a schedule for one day a week lending a paw to our staff to deal with the day to day goings on.  Here are a few of the things we ask of our volunteers. 

1. Throwing a pillow on the floor of the catteries, sitting down and playing with the cats and kittens.  This helps socialize our adoption candidates and makes them easier to place.  Our adult cats will love on you for hours.  It has been scientifically proven that petting a cat can lower your blood pressure, reduce anxiety and release endorphins. 
2. Bathing puppies.. needs no explanation…just plain fun!!
3. Taking dogs on their daily walks
4. Going along on a “rescue” mission with Ricardo
5. General cleaning
6. Greeting visitors

These are just a few of the many fun ways to spend half of a day.  Volunteering for the HSCI is extremely gratifying both emotionally and spiritually.  Bring the family.  We do ask that if you bring children they are always under your direct supervision.  For more information you can email us at pets@humanecozumel.org

Lisa Ramirez is the President of the Cozumel Humane Society.  Lisa has been an active part of the Cozumel Community since she moved to the Island in 1991.  Lisa also owns and runs Rock’n Java, and has raised her daughter, Bianca,  here in Cozumel.

Programa de Voluntarios de la Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel   por Lisa Ramirez, Presidenta HSCI

La Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel desea darle la bienvenida a Joei StGermain a la rotación programada de voluntarios. Durante los últimos años hemos contado, en forma regular, con Joei en la Sociedad Humanitaria brindándonos una mano cuando y siempre que se ha necesitado. Ahora ella será nuestro enlace con las personas que pasan un día como voluntarios en la Sociedad Humanitaria o quienes sólo vienen a dejar donativos y hacer un recorrido. La Sociedad Humanitaria está buscando a más personas para incluirlas en la rotación de voluntarios. Esto significa que usted estará programado un día a la semana, dando una pata a nuestro personal con las operaciones diarias. Algunas de las cosas que pedimos de nuestros voluntarios son:
1.  Echar una almohada en el piso de la jaula de los gatos, sentarse y jugar con los gatitos y los gatos. Esto ayuda a los candidatos a adopción a socializar y es más fácil encontrar donde acomodarlos. Nuestros gatos adultos le amaran por horas. Se ha comprobado científicamente que acariciar a un gato puede bajar la presión sanguínea, reducir la ansiedad y liberar endorfinas. 
2.  Bañar cachorros… no necesita mayor explicación…. ¡es pura diversión! 
3.  Acompañar a los perros en sus paseos diarios.
4.  Acompañar a Ricardo en una misión de “rescate”.
5.  Limpieza general.
6. Dar la bienvenida a los visitantes.
Estas son sólo algunas de las muchas formas divertidas para pasar la mitad de un día. Ser voluntario para la Sociedad Humanitaria es muy gratificante tanto emocional como espiritualmente. Cozumel 4 You Facebook Group Reaches 10,000 Members   by Laura Wilkinson, Editor, Cozumel 4 You

I was recently humbled and amazed when the Cozumel 4 You Facebook group hit 10,000 members earlier this week.  When I originally started the website, weekly NEWS and the facebook group it was because I was always finding out things after they happened and I wanted to get current up-to-date events and news about Cozumel

Some of you have probably heard about all the new changes I’m working on for Cozumel 4 You.  We’re moving to a brand-new website with a totally fresh, new format and, in response to a lot of reader’s suggestions, we’ve convinced  several island experts to write regular columns on their area of expertise.  We’re opening up space to guest writers, photographers and reader questions as Cozumel 4 You progresses toward a more community based news.  Our weekly NEWS will also be moving into a sleeker updated page, and you’ll still find it in your in-box every Thursday, just with a whole bunch more of what our nearly 16,000 subscribers want.

I wanted to take a moment and thank all the members that make up the  Cozumel 4 You Facebook group as well, since I personally use it for instant advice and help all the time.  As I said before, I created the sandbox, but it’s the people that play in it that really make it happen.  Thanks to my staff, Moncia Sauza for her fantastic translations, my webchick Lisa Rae, the  C4Y group admins, and all the people that have made me laugh and had a great time these past 4 years.  It’s been a great ride so far, but please, buckle up, because the next phase will be epic.

Laura Wilkinson is the Editor for Cozumel 4 You. An ex-Connecticut Yankee who has called Cozumel home for over 15 years, Laura ran away to the Caribbean years ago, bumped around the islands teaching SCUBA diving, lost some time in Jamaica, and finally stopped in Cozumel for a 2 week vacation that hasn’t ended yet. With a degree in Journalism from a fancy private college she convinced her parents to pay for, Laura writes, edits, and creates the weekly  Cozumel 4 You news, promotional articles about the island, and her very own blog, which she finds hilarious. Her long suffering husband, the Fabster, has long since resigned himself to having zero private life, as he’s been involved in her various schemes and plots since his arrival. Proud parents to a variety of rescue dogs and cats, Laura continues to be the bane of her traditional Mexican mother-in-law’s existence, as she muses her way through life in the Mexican Caribbean.

A comienzos de esta semana quedé asombrada y agradecida cuando el grupo Cozumel 4 you en facebook llegó a los 10,000 miembros. Cuando inicié el sitio web, NOTICIAS semanales y el grupo en facebook se debió a que siempre me enteraba de las cosas después de que pasaban, y mi deseo era mantenerme al tanto de los eventos y noticias acerca de Cozumel.

Es posible que algunos de ustedes ya estén enterados sobre los cambios en los que estoy trabajando para Cozumel 4 You. Nos mudamos a un sitio web nuevo con un formato totalmente fresco y, en respuesta a las sugerencias de muchos de nuestros lectores, he convencido a diversos expertos en la Isla para que regularmente escriban columnas dentro de su área de conocimiento. Estamos abriendo un espacio a escritores invitados, fotógrafos y preguntas de lectores en tanto Cozumel 4 You avanza hacia más noticias de la comunidad. Nuestras NOTICIAS semanales también cambiarán a una página actualizada más elegante que continuarán recibiendo en sus bandejas de entrada todos los días jueves, sólo que con mucho más de lo que nuestros casi 16,000 suscriptores desean.

Quiero dedicar unos momentos para agradecer a todos los miembros que forman el grupo Cozumel 4 You en facebook, ya que personalmente lo utilizó todo el tiempo para obtener asesoría y ayuda instantánea. Tal como mencioné, concebí el arenero pero la gente que juega en él es quien realmente lo hace realidad. Gracias a mi equipo: a Mónica Sauza por sus estupendas traducciones, a mi chica web, Lisa Rae, a los administradores del grupo C4Y y a toda la gente que me ha hecho reír y pasar grandes momentos durante estos últimos 4 años. Ha sido  una gran travesía hasta ahora, pero por favor, pónganse los cinturones pues la siguiente fase será épica.

Laura Wilkinson es la editora de Cozumel 4 You. Es una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura escribe, edita y crea las noticias semanales  Cozumel 4 You, artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y su propio blog el cual encuentra divertidísimo. Su muy tolerante marido, el Fabster, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, ya que desde que llegó se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,  Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.   

Whale Shark Season Begins in Quintana Roo

Whale Shark migration season officially started on May 15th in Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Peninsula.  Whale Sharks, (or Rhincodon typus as they are known in Latin), typically arrive at the areas near Holbox and Isla Mujeres from May – September every year to feed off the plankton-rich waters.  These beautiful creatures are considered an endangered migratory species, and are thusly protected by strict regulations that allow low-impact tourism only.  While visitors can watch and swim with the fish, it’s an extremely regulated and protected activity.

Representatives from area tourism agencies are estimating that up to 400 whale sharks will visit the Yucatan Peninsula, and 200 of these will be around Contoy and Holbox Islands.  Generally speaking,  whale sharks are plankton feeders which can be found near the surface of the water during the morning hours.  They are also known to eat krill, and mirco-algae. 
Isla Mujeres will host  heir 8th annual Whale Stark Festival in July, showcasing the achievements, traditions, and environmental splendor of Isla Mujeres and attracts over 5,000 people. The family-friendly fest encourages swimming with the whale sharks and educating visitors on the need to preserve the area’s marine ecosystem. A part of the proceeds from the festival will go to Amigos de Isla Contoy, a non-profit working to advance education on sustainable marine conservation and ecotourism in the region. Although Cozumel is not fortunate enough to host these wondrous animals, who can reach 14M/46 FT in length, the island is close enough to make a day trip to Isla Mujeres, Isla Controy or Holbox.  Whale Shark season runs until September.  Even if you’re only on the island for a few days during this time of year, consider making the once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Comienza en Quintana Roo la temporada de tiburón ballena

La temporada oficial de la migración del tiburón ballena comenzó oficialmente el 15 de mayo en Quintana Roo y la Península de Yucatán. Los tiburones ballena (o Rhincodon typus, por su nombre en latín) por lo general llegan al área de Holbox e Isla Mujeres entre Mayo y Septiembre, todos los años, para alimentarse en las aguas ricas en plancton. Estas bellas creaturas están consideradas como especie migratoria en peligro de extinción y por ello está protegida por normas estrictas que sólo permiten turismo de bajo impacto. En tanto los visitantes pueden observar y nadar con estos peces, es una actividad extremadamente regulada y protegida.

Representantes de agencias turísticas estiman que hasta 400 tiburones ballena visitarán la península de Yucatán y que 200 de ellos se encontraran en las islas aledañas de Contoy y Holbox. En términos generales, los tiburones ballena se alimentan de plancton y es posible verlos cerca de la superficie del mar durante las mañanas. Se sabe que también se alimentan de kril y micro algas.

En Julio, se lleva a cabo el 8º Festival Anual de Tiburón Ballena  en Isla Mujeres exponiendo los logros, tradiciones y esplendor medioambiental de Isla Mujeres. El evento atrae a más de 5,000 persona. El festival familiar promueve el nado con los tiburones ballena y educa a los visitantes acerca de la necesidad de conservar el ecosistema marino de la zona. No obstante que Cozumel no tiene la fortuna de contar con la presencia de estos admirables animales que pueden alcanzar hasta 14 mts./46 pies de largo, la Isla se encuentra suficientemente cerca para hacer el viaje de un día a Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy o Holbox.  La temporada sigue hasta Septiembre. LCS Seeks Social Media & Customer Service Person -  We are recruiting for the person who can tell the story of our brand and educate customers about our unique products using digital social platforms,  including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and other emerging media.  The individual will physically work at our flagship location on the waterfront In Cozumel, in order to give customers an “insider” view

Do you have strong spelling and grammar skills in English?
Are you able to follow processes, work collaboratively and receive constructive feedback?

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Understand the key message pillars of the Los Cinco Soles (LCS) brand.
Develop written and visual content that helps customers understand what makes LCS unique.
Create buzz about LCS new products, promotions, upcoming events, etc.
Spend time learning and understanding LCS products: where, how and by whom they are made as well as their unique characteristics and their care.
Choose interesting moments along the way and develop the “story” that helps our customer to understand the value proposition behind our brand
Identify and develop aspirational images and other content that will enhance the LCS brand for social sharing.

¿Cuenta con una sólida ortografía y gramática en inglés?
¿Puede apegarse a procesos, trabajar en colaboración y recibir retroalimentación constructiva?

RESPONSABILIDADES:
Entender los pilares del mensaje principal de la marca Los Cinco Soles (LCS).
Desarrollar contenidos escritos y visuales que ayuden a los clientes a entender lo que hace a LCS único.
Llamar la atención sobre los nuevos productos de LCS, promociones, eventos próximos, etc.
Pasar tiempo aprendiendo y entendiendo los productos LCS: dónde, cómo y por quiñen están hechos, así como sus características particulares y esmero.
Elija momentos interesantes en el camino y desarrolle la “historia” que ayude a nuestro cliente a comprender el valor propuesto detrás de nuestra marca.
