Cozumel’s Downtown Park “Punto Zero” Ready to Reopen

After over 8 months of construction, Cozumel’s downtown park, which will soon be renamed to “Punto Zero”  will reopen.  The park, formerly known as “Benito Juarez,” has been undergoing a 95 million peso facelift, which included restoring the area back to one level, so that it will be assessable to everyone, regardless of physical ability.  Overseen by the College of Architects and Engineers, the historical area now has new concrete seating areas, street lighting, a fountain, and additional garden areas.

Additionally, the main access to “Punta Zero” will be between the downtown pier and Plaza Siria, which serve as a pedestrian walkway with direct sight access from Av. Rafael Melgar to the historic town clock.

Plans for the Grand Re-inauguration Celebration are expected to be announced shortly.

“Punto Cero”, el parque del centro, reabrirá en poco tiempo

Después de 8 meses de labores de construcción, en breve reabrirá el parque del centro de Cozumel bajo el nombre nuevo de “Punto Cero”. El que otrora fuera conocido como parque Benito Juárez, ha recibido un remozamiento con un costo de 95 millones de pesos que incluye la restauración del área a un solo nobel para que sea accesible a todos, independientemente de la capacidad física.
Bajo la supervisión del Colegio de Arquitectos e Ingenieros, esta zona histórica ahora cuenta con nuevos asientos de concreto, iluminación de calle, una fuente y jardines adicionales.

Además, la entrada principal a “Punto Cero” se encontrará entre el muelle discal y Plaza Siria, sirviendo como paso peatonal con acceso de vista directa desde la Avenida Rafael Melgar hacia el histórico reloj de la ciudad.

Se espera que los planes de celebración a  la gran reinauguración se anuncien dentro de poco.

2015 Hurricane Season To Officially Begin, Cozumel Municipality Prepared

June 1st marks the official start of Hurricane Season in the Caribbean, and although meteorologists are predicting a less active storm year the 2015 Municipal Hurricane Preparedness Committee took time out to meet with the Tourism Department.  Together both entities want to ensure that visitors to the island will receive updated impending storm information, as well as access to various consulates and embassies.  The general recommendation for tourists is to leave Cozumel and return to their point of origin before experiencing any storm impact. Hurricane season runs from June – October. For a quick summary of the 2015 predictions, check out this Accuweather page.

The National Weather Service has also published a comprehensive list to prepare for a hurricane. Another good resource for tracking weather is Wind Guru.com.

La temporada de huracanes está por iniciar oficialmente; el municipio de Cozumel está preparado

El 1º de junio inicia oficialmente la temporada de huracanes en el Caribe; y no obstante que los meteorólogos pronostican un año de menor actividad, el Comité Operativo Especializado en Fenómenos Hidrometeorológicos 2015 se reunió con la Dirección de Turismo. Ambas dependencias desean garantizar que los visitantes a la Isla reciban información actualizada de alguna tormenta inminente, y que tengan acceso a diversos consulados y embajadas. La recomendación general para los turistas es salir de Cozumel y retornar a sus lugares de origen antes de tener que vivir la experiencia del impacto de alguna tormenta. Junio a Octubre es la temporada de huracanes. Para ver un rápido resumen de los pronósticos para el año 2015, echen un vistazo a esta página de Accuweather.

El Servicio Nacional del Clima, cambian ha publicado lista completa para hacer preparaciones en caso de huracán. Otra buena fuente para seguir las condiciones climáticas es Wind Guru.com

Remembering Susan Bonnett : A Cozumel Resident Who Really Touched the Community  by Joan Roberts

Cozumel resident Susan Bonnett was not only a good friend to the Cozumel Cruz Roja, and an active member of the board.  Additionally, she was a valuable resident for Cozumel, helping many members of the island, including children and senior citizens.  Sadly, last week Susan lost her long battle with cancer. Joan Roberts, who is also a member of the Cruz Roja Delegacion Cozumel, shared the following, and Cozumel 4 You shares it with their permission.

We all know Susan for her good works on earth and now she has officially received her angel wings in heaven. Susan lost her valiant battle with cancer last night.

Susan's angel deeds included enriching the lives of "her kids" in the neighborhood, helping to educate them, and in some cases paying for their schooling. For many years she worked for the Red Cross and served on the board. She started the Three King's Day delivering toys and gifts to children in less fortunate neighborhoods. Susan frequently did craft projects with the residents of Juan Pablo II, Cozumel's elder care facility. The list goes on and on.

I know I'm a better person for having the gift of her friendship and I'm sure you are too.

Recordando a Susan Bonnet: una residente de Cozumel quien realmente toco muchas vidas  por Joan Roberts

Susan Bonnet quien residiera en Cozumel, no solo fue amiga cercana de la Cruz Roja de Cozumel sino también miembro activo del Concejo. Además ayudó a muchas personas en la Isla incluyendo a niños y personas de tercera edad. Tristemente, Susan perdió su larga lucha contra el cáncer. Joan Roberts también miembro de la Cruz Roja Delegación Cozumel, compartió lo siguiente y, con su autorización,  Cozumel 4 You lo comparte con ustedes.

Todos conocemos a Susan por su buena labor en la Tierra y ahora ella ha recibido oficialmente sus alas de ángel en el cielo. Ayer por la noche, Susan perdió su valiente batalla contra el cáncer.

Sus acciones angelicales incluyeron enriquecer las vidas de “sus niños” en la colonia, ayudándoles con educación y en algunas ocasiones incluso cubriendo el pago de sus escuelas. Durante muchos años trabajo para la Cruz Roja en el Concejo. Comenzó entregando juguetes y regalos el Día de Reyes a niños en colonias de escasos recursos. Con frecuencia Susan hacía proyectos artesanales con los residentes de la casa hogar para personas de tercera edad Juan Pablo II; y la lista sigue y sigue.

Se que soy una mejor persona por haber tenido el regalo de su amistad y seguramente ustedes también.

Humane Society of Cozumel Island Pets of the Week  by Paola Kotkovka

Lester, Male, 7 months, weights 3.7 Kg. Arrived on Apr-21-15: Little Lester was founded close to Playa Chen Rio in the other side of Cozumel. A family went to the beach a Sunday and he was pick up and brought home but due to his skin problem the family was worried about their other pets so they had no choice but to bring him to HS. He is super spoiled, adores treats and likes to give kisses.

Conchita, Female. 1 month, weights 400 gr. Arrived on Apr-12-15. CCA received a report of some abandoned kittens in a park in Colonia San Miguel. Some people arrived and adopted all the kittens except for Conchita who remained alone. Then she was brought to HS and was put with Maggie, a cat mom who has two nursing kittens. She adopted her and now the 4 are happier in their kennel.

We are starting to have distemper and parvo patients, please remember to have your pet properly vaccinated. 

PLEASE: Volunteer at the shelter, it is so important for the dogs and cats to get hug-a-therapy, you can walk our dogs or play with the puppies and cats Monday to Saturday 11am to 1pm and 3pm to 4:30pm and Sundays 11am to 3pm children must come with a responsible grown up. Our pets love the attenttion and you'll have a nice day. You can also be trained: We will have a  High Volume, No Cost Spay/Neuter Campaign on June and volunteers are the heart of this campaigns. We will also need more donations: cotton, syringes, gauze, old newspapers, etc we will keep you posted.
We have identification tags for your pets, come and see them, remember your pet must have it's collar with id tag at all times. And they should never be on the street alone.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria  by Paola Kotkovka

Lester, Macho de 7 meses, peso 3.7 kg. Llego el 21-Abr-15. El pequeño Lester fue encontrado cerca de Playa Chen Rio cuando una familia fue un domingo. Lo recogieron al verlo hambriento y con la piel lastimada. Lo tuvieron unos días pero se preocuparon por sus otras mascotas. Lo dejaron en SHC para que estuviera mejor. Es muy perro muy consentido y le encantan los premios como botana.

Conchita, Hembra de 1 mes, pesa 400 gr. Llego el 12-Abr-15. CCA recibió un reporte de unos gatitos abandonados en un parque de la Colonia San Miguel 1. Unas personas ya habían adoptado a unos gatitos y Conchita se quedo solita. La trajeron a SH y la pusieron con Maggie, una mama gata que tiene dos cachorros lactantes quien la adopto y ahora los 4 estan en su jaula muy felices.

Este y muchos otros animales les esperan en el refugio. Recuerden visitarnos en el refugio o en nuestra página web www.humanecozumel.org para conocerlos; quien sabe, es posible que encuentren a ese amigo muy especial. Para más información, por favor contáctenos a través de pets@humane.org 

Estamos empezando a tener pacientes con moquillo y parvo; recuerden que su mascota debe estar vacunada adecuadamente.

POR FAVOR: Ofrezcan ser voluntarios en el refugio. Es muy importante que los perros reciban terapia de cariño. Pueden llevar a caminar a nuestros perros o jugar con los cachorros y gatos de lunes a sábado de 11 a.m. a 1 p.m. y de 3 a 4:30 p-m. Los niños deben venir acompañados de un adulto responsable. A nuestras mascotas les encanta la atención y ustedes pasarán un día agradable. Usted también puede recibir capacitación: durante el mes de junio tendremos una campaña de Alto Volumen, Castración/Esterilización sin costo y los voluntarios están en el centro de estas campañas.

También requerimos donativos: algodón, gasas, periódico usado, etc.; les mantendremos informados.
Tenemos placas de identificación para sus mascotas. Vengan y véanlas. Recuerden que su mascota debe portar el collar con placa de identificación en todo momento.

A Brief History of the Amazing Works of Art in Cozumel by the Ponzanelli Family   by Paul Daniel Petock

Cozumel Island is fortunate to be graced with several sculptures by the renown Ponzanelli family . A family with an 800 year history of artists , staring with Valario Ponzanelli in Carrara  Italy , and 110 years ago in Mexico with Adolfo Ponzanelli . Adolfo moved from Italy to Mexico to create the marble reliefs on the Palacio de Bellas Artes , the palace of fine arts , in Mexico city .   Adolfo Ponzanelli opened the 1st bronze foundry in mexico and created the Cherub and Lion at the base of the Angel of Mexico, Adolfo has many works thru out Mexico .

Foremost in the family in my generation is the master sculpture Gabriel Ponzanelli . Gabriel's work is in 35 cities throughout out the world , including Los Angles , Washington , Toronto , Paris , Mexico City , New York and San Miguel . Gabriel created the Frida Kahlo bronze for her park in Mexico City, and the sculpture of David Alfaro Siqueiros in front of the Poliforum , a place created by Siqueiros to display his work , in Mexico City. Gabriel's work includes The Angels of Puebla Mexico , standing over 50 feet high , V.P.  Hubert Humphrey for the Humphrey museum in Washington and the Heroes of the Revolution in Mexico . I first met and became friends with Gabriel in 1970, when i was the photographer for an Art magazine in NY . The publisher and  editor for the Voice of The Alchemist was my friend Jessie Nazareth . Jessie was boyhood friends with Gabriel and invited him to the area. Jessie was also an artist and worked under David Siqueiros, Jessie's uncles was Emilio Indio Fernandez the movie actor / director.   I have been documenting Gabriel’s work and the work of his amazing and highly talented family from that time . His son Daniel is an incredible muralist , with monumental works thru out Mexico . In Cozumel Gabriel created the Dolphins , the Bather and the Reader all at the Hotel Cozumel . Rosa Ponzanelli , Gabriel’s sister has the eye catching sculpture on Melgar just north of the ferry terminal of the diver. His Nephew Oscar also has work on Melgar including General Melgar and The dancers . Marcella Ponzanelli , Oscar's mother, is  a highly talented painter, sculptor and boutique  artist.

Paul D. Petock is an amazing photographer who has worked with John Lennon and the great rock producer Pete Bennett,  A frequent visitor to the island with long-standing ties all over the world, Paul was kind enough to share a few stories about some of our Cozumel statues and the artists who created them.

Una breve historia de las asombrosas obras de arte en Cozumel de la familia Ponzanelli   por Paul Daniel Petock

La Isla de Cozumel tiene la fortuna de contar con diversas esculturas de la conocida familia Ponzanelli. Una familia de artistas cuya historia data desde hace 800 años comenzando con Valario Ponzanelli en Carrara, Italia; y hace 110 años en México con Adolfo Ponzanelli. Adolfo se mudo de Italia a México con el objeto de crear los relieves de mármol en el Palacio de Bellas Artes en la Ciudad de México. Adolfo Ponzanelli abrió la primera fundidora de bronce en México creando el querubín y el león que se encuentran el la base del Ángel de la Independencia en México. Adolfo cuenta con muchas obras a través de México.

El primero en la familia en mi generación es el maestro escultor Gabriel Ponzanelli. La obra de Gabriel se encuentra en 35 ciudades alrededor del mundo, incluyendo Los Ángeles, Washington, Toronto, Paris, Ciudad de México y la escultura de David Alfaro Siqueiros frente al Poliforum, un sitio creado en la Ciudad de México por Siqueiros para exhibir sus  propias obras. La obra de Gabriel incluye Los Ángeles de Puebla, México, con más de 50 pies de altura; Vicepresidente Hubert Humphrey par el museo Humphrey en Washington, y los Heres de la Revolución en México. Gabriel y yo nos hicimos amigos en el año 1970 cuando yo trabajé como fotógrafo para una revista de arte en Nueva York. El publicista y editor de Voice of the Alchemist era mi amigo Jessie Nazareth. Gabriel y Jessie eran amigos desde la infancia, y Jessie lo invito a visitar el área. Jessie también era artista y trabajó bajo la dirección de David Alfaro Siqueiros. Uno de los tíos de Gabriel fue Emilio “el Indio” Fernández, actor/director de cine. He documentado la obra de Gabriel al igual que las obras de esta fabulosa y sumamente talentosa familia de esa época. Su hijo Daniel es un gran muralista y tiene obras monumentales alrededor de México. En Cozumel, Gabriel creó los Delfines, Balista y Lector que se encuentran en el Hotel Cozumel. La llamativa escultura Los Buzos  que se ubica sobre la Avenida Melgar, al norte del muelle del ferry, es obra de Rosa Ponzanelli, hermana de Gabriel. Su sobrino Oscar también es creador de la escultura del General Melgar y Los Bailarines. Marcella Ponzanelli, madre de Oscar,es una talentosa pintora, escultora y artista boutique. 

Paul D. Petrok es un sorprendente fotógrafo que trabajo con John Lennon y con Pete Bennett, el gran productor de música estilo rock. Visita la Isla con fecuencia y tiene lazos de largo tiempo alrededor del mundo. Paul fue muy amable al compartir algunas de las historias de nuestras esculturas en Cozumel y sobre los artistas que las crearon.

AXXA Seguros Cantarell, nuevo local en el 2º piso – Irma Portilla de Cantarell y el equipo de AXXA Seguros se han mudado a su nuevo local en el segundo piso. Sus oficinas continúan en el centro comercial ubicado en la esquina de las Avenidas 30 y 11; sin embargo, se mudaron a un local más grande y espacioso en el segundo piso.
