Hibakusha, the Japanese Peace Boat, Could Call into Cozumel

Japan’s Hibakusha, could call into Cozumel later this month.  According to municipal authorities, who are in discussion to bring the “peace boat” into the island’s port.  This would be an important educational opportunity for residents and visitors to the island.
The Hibakusha, is named after the Japanese word used to identify survivors of the nuclear explosions at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  These individuals were often discriminated against, denied basic civil liberties and became virtual outcasts.

Since 2008, the Hibakusha has been travelling the globe with the goal to create awareness for a nuclear-free world.  The group shares their stories with schools, governments, and the media.  Since the average age of a Hibkusha, or nuclear survivor is 80 years old, time is of the utmost importance.  The group has also joined with various other survivors including those exposed to Agent Orange or other disasters.

Hibakusha, Peace Boat (o Barco de Paz) de procedencia japonesa podría atracar en Cozumel a finales de Octubre. De acuerdo a las autoridades municipales, quienes se encuentran en conversaciones para traer al “Peace Boat” a puerto, esta podría ser una oportunidad educativa para los habitantes y visitantes de la Isla.

Hibakusha, debe su nombre a la palabra japonesa usada para identificar a los sobrevivientes de las explosiones en Hiroshima y Nagasaki. Estas personas con frecuencia eran discriminadas, las libertades cívicas básicas les eran negadas y se convirtieron en marginadas.

Desde el año 2008 Hibakusha ha viajado por todo el globo terráqueo creando conciencia de un mundo libre de armas nucleares. El grupo comparte sus historias con las escuelas, gobiernos y los medios. Ya que la edad promedio de un Hubakusha, o sobreviviente nuclear, es 80 años, el tiempo es de suma importancia. El grupo también se ha unido con diversos sobrevivientes incluyendo aquéllos expuestos al agente naranja u otros desastres.

Cozumel’s 2015 Turtle Season: High Numbers Projected

Cozumel’s Municipal Director of Environment & Ecology recently stated that this year’s turtle season nesting total has already reached 5,000 and projections could be as high as 6,000 marked nests for the 2015 season. 

So far 147 nests of "Loggerhead" (Caretta caretta) and 4,853 known as "White" (Chelonia mydas) have been recorded. Numbers haven’t  been this high since 2011, when 6,000 nests were recorded.  For example in 2013 there were a total of 3,300 nests, and in 2012 there were over 5, 200.

Cozumel is fortunate to be a breeding area to two species of turtles, the loggerhead (careta careta) and the green turtle (chelonian mydas).  Turtles in Cozumel are protected under both civil and penal codes, with the first decree of protection appearing in publication in “Diario Oficial de la Federación,” back in 1927.  During the months of May through September these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on Cozumel’s eastern beaches.  Sea turtles generally lay between 150-200 eggs each time and can nest up to 6 times in a breeding season.  The eggs take around 60 days to incubate before the baby turtles head toward the sea.

Temporada 2015 de la tortuga en Cozumel: se esperan cifras elevada

En fechas recientes el Director Municipal de Medio Ambiente y Ecología declaró que el total en lo que va de este año de la temporada de anidación ha alcanzado 5,000 nidos y se espera que la temporada 2015 llegue hasta 6,000 nidos. Hasta ahora se han registrado 147 nidos de tortugas caguama (Caretta caretta) y 4,853 de tortugas verdes (Chelonia mydas). Desde el año 2011, cuando se registraron 6,000 nidos, las cifras no habían sido tan elevadas. Por ejemplo, en el 2013 se registro un total de 3,300 nidos y en el año 2012, más de 5,200.

Cozumel tiene la fortuna de ser un área de anidación de dos especies de tortugas: la caguama (Caretta caretta) y la verde (Chelonia mydas). Las tortugas en Cozumel se encuentran protegidas tanto por el Código Civil como por el Código Penal del Estado, siendo que el primer decreto de protección fue publicado en el Diario Oficial de la Federal desde el año 1927. Entre Mayo y Septiembre estas tortugas llegan a las playas orientales de Cozumel a anidar. Por lo general, las tortugas marinas colocan de 150 a 200 huevos en cada ocasión, y pueden anidar hasta 6 ocasiones en una temporada. Los huevos son incubados durante 60 días, después de los cuales las tortugas eclosionan dirigiéndose hacia el mar.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Fercho - Male. 4 months, weights 1.6 Kg. Arrived on May-7-15. Fercho was found in a flower pot hiding from everybody. He is a bit shy kitten, but he is getting more friendly day by day.Now Fercho is more sociable, play with the other kitties and is very friendly and sweet.

Miauricio- male . 5 months, weights 3.1 kg. Arrived on Jun­ 20­15. One night a family hear a kitten crying outsidetheir house located in Colonia Centro. The family had previously adopted a cat in HS but the kitten
didn’t get along with the family cat. Miauricio is very curious and playful.

Humane Society of Cozumel Island 2nd Annual “Putts for Paws” - In conjunction with the Cozumel Country Club, we are planning the 2nd Annual "Putts for Paws" Humane Society of Cozumel Island Golf tournament for November 7th. Sponsors are currently being sought for each hole - your company’s logo will be featured in the printed and electronic edition of all the promotional material. Sponsors will have their  logo on the hole’s flag and will be able to  decorate their sponsored hole however they’d like . Registration for golfers is $100usd p/player and can be made in advance through the Humane Society of Cozumel Island PayPal account or at the Cocktail Reception the night before the event. Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Ferrero - Los cachorros de Yoko nacieron en la Colonia Fincas. Su mama escapo de casa y dio a luz en un hueco y quedo muy debilitada cuando la encontraron. No se podía ni parar y tenia las uñas muy largas. A pesar de tener dueño, este no pudo hacerse responsable de ellos y los entrego a SH para que tuvieran mejores cuidados

Miauricio - Macho de 5 meses, pesa 3.1 kg. Llego el 20­Jun­15. Una noche escucharon llorar a un gatito afuera de una casa en la Col. Chentuk. La familia ya había adoptado previamente con SH pero no pudieron  cuidarlo ya que no se llevaba con su gato. Miauricio es muy curioso y juguetón.

Recuerden, por favor, ser parte de la solución; adopten, esterilicen/castren a su mascota, donen, cuiden a los que rescaten (tráiganlos al albergue para que los revise el veterinario). Nuestro número telefónico es : 987-112-3376

La Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel planea su 2º Evento Anual “Putts for Paws” – En conjunto con el Country Club de Cozumel planeamos el 2º Torneo Anual de Golf de la Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel “Putts for Paws” para el 7 de noviembre. Por el momento se buscan patrocinadores para cada hoyo; el logotipo de su empresa aparecerá en la edición impresa y electrónica de todo material promocional. El logotipo de los patrocinadores aparecerá en la bandera del hoyo y podrán decorar el hoyo que patrocinen, de la manera que quieran. El registro de los golfistas es de $100 dólares estadounidenses por jugador y pueden pagarse por adelantado a través de la cuenta PayPal de la Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel o en el coctel de bienvenida la noche previa al evento. 27th Anniversary of Hurricane Gilbert in Cozumel Commemorated

On September 14th, 1988 Hurricane Gilbert struck Cozumel bringing heavy winds and rains that lasted nearly 72 hours.  Professor Velio Vivas Valdes, the island’s official historian, recently reminisced about Gilbert;  the first hurricane to cause mass destruction on the island.  Apparently, radio transmissions to Cozumel were cut prior to the hurricane’s arrival to avoid a “widespread panic.” Many of the island’s buildings were made of wood or laminate, and did not stand-up as well as our modern construction methods.

Additionally, at that time, according to Velio Vivas there was no Civil Protection or Hurricane Preparedness Plans such as the Municipality has in place now, which also contributed to the effects of Hurricane Gilbert. 

Se conmemora el 27º año del paso del huracán Gilberto sobre Cozumel

El 14 de septiembre del año 1988 el huracán Gilberto sacudió Cozumel con fuertes vientos y lluvias durante 72 horas. El profesor Velio Vivas Vales, historiador oficial de la Isla, en fechas recientes recordó el huracán Gilberto como el primero en causar destrucción masiva en la Isla. Apartemente las transmisiones de radio en Cozumel fueron cortadas antes de la llegada del huracán para evitar el “pánico masivo”. Muchas de las construcciones de la Isla eran de madera o lámina y no se sostenían tan bien como nuestras construcciones modernas.

Además, de acuerdo a Velio Vivas, en aquel entonces no existían Protección Civil ni los planes de preparación contra huracanes con los que el municipio cuenta hoy en día, algo que también contribuyó a los efectos del huracán Gilberto.

DAN To Host Free Dive Safety Seminar Oct 6th

On the evening of Tuesday, Oct 6, 2015, we invite all divers and rescue personnel to attend the free Dive Safety Seminars by DAN – the Diver’s Alert Network -  and Traveler EMS in Cozumel. Registration begins at 6:30 pm in the auditorium of the Island Museum (La Museo de la Isa).

There will be 3 topics including the first one in English by Dr. Peter Buzzacott, the Director of Injury Monitoring and prevention at DAN America. His talk will be "Murphy’s Law: Cases from the DAN Diving Incident Reporting System". The 2nd and 3rd  topics will be in Spanish.  Dr. Cuauhtemoc Sanchez, the Executive Director of the DAN Emergency Hotline in Latin America, and Dr. Dario Gomez, the DAN Medical Representative for Mexico will give the Spanish presentations.  There will also be coffee, snacks, and a DAN prize raffle.  We hope to see all the divers there!

DAN presenta el 6 de octubre un seminario sobre la seguridad en el buceo

Invitamos a todos los buzos y personal de rescate para que la noche del martes 6 de octubre, 2015 acudan a los Seminarios de Seguridad en el Buceo presentados en Cozumel por DAN, Diver’s Alert Network, y por Traveler EMS.  El registro comienza a las 6:30 p.m. en el auditorio del Museo de la Isla.

Se trataran 3 temas, siendo el primero de éstos, en inglés, presentado por el Dr. Peter Buzzacott, Director de Monitoreo y Prevención de Lesiones en DAN América (Estados Unidos de Norteamérica): “Murphy’s Law: Cases from the DAN DIving Incident Reporting System” (“La Ley de Murphy: Casos del Sistema DAN de Reportes de Accidentes en el Buceo”). La 2ª y 3ª presentaciones serán en español, a cargo del Dr. Cuauhtémoc Sánchez, Director Ejecutivo DAN de la Línea Directa de Emergencias Médicas en Latinoamérica, y el Dr. Darío Gómez, Representante Médico de DAN para México.  Habrá café y bocadillos así como una rifa de premios DAN. ¡Esperamos ver a todos los buzos ahí!

The Story of Candi Cane Corki & Where She Came From – Written in Her Own Words

I ventured to Cozumel after a week in Cancun in 1975. We flew from Cancun on a small Cessna. I could have dropped a fishing pole and fished all the way over we were so low.

I thought the waters and beaches in Cancun were beautiful until I arrived at what was then the Intercontinental Hotel (Presidente). It took my breath away to be beachfront on the first floor. It was just two floors. No tower at that time. It was the first time for my two and four year-old boys and they were treated like royalty.

My life took many twists and turns over the years and at one point in the mid 90's after one week, two weeks, six weeks of hotels I found a very modern 1 bedroom downtown and thought some day Cozumel was going to be home. Been here ever since.....
I stumbled on Papa Hogs Dive Shop and become friends with Margaret and Mike...I even was a pet sitter for them when they were off Island. Over the years I watched how generous they were with giving back to the island and how well they treated their employees. At Christmas they always had a party, lots of food, lots to drink and gifts for the all the children of their employees . They had a few Santa's over the years but none as perfect as Santa Ron from OKC to hand out the gifts. They asked me to fill in one year as an elf but the costume belonged to someone much larger than me. I continued to help hand out gifts with Santa for years at Papa Hogs and all of the sudden I had requests to go with Santa to other places that Margaret supported like the CAM school for the little ones and later the CAM school out on Av. 30.

I needed something more fitting in a costume and Candi Cane Corki was born. I have gone through 4 costumes over the years (the rain doesn't help) but now Santa Ron and I book (for free) all sorts of Christmas parties for the little ones like Kelly's annual shoe/gift party, four trips to Las Fincas with different groups bringing food, toys and beanie babies to the kids, private parties where the guests are especially needy and are treated to a boat ride, food and gifts purchased by the host such as Eva at Blue Angel,  Cozumel Beach Hostel, Nelly at Woody's buys huge bags of candy and we pass it out in the square and more..

Well here it is 2015 ...I still spend summer with my 93 and 95 year old parents and sisters and try and visit my kids/grandkids in the Pacific Northwest but in September I return “HOME”.

It's all about the kids and giving back to this wonderful island. It's the people, the friends I've made and the children that are so needy that draw me back.
Now I have a calendar and start keeping track of days, evenings and weekends that people want Santa and Candi Cane Corki to come and visit ...I go through 7000 3” candy canes every year brought down by friends of Cozumel who want to be part of the Christmas Spirit. It's a wonderful life and I'm blessed to be able to give something so wonderful back to this amazing Island.

Corki, also known as Candi Cane Corki, passes out candy canes and other sweets at numerous locations throughout the holiday season here in Cozumel.  Since traditional candy canes are often hard to find here in Cozumel, she’s always on the hunt for kind folks to “mule” some down.  If you’re travelling to Cozumel, and have a little extra room in your suitcase, consider tucking some mini candy canes, into your bag.  Being the candy cane expert, Corki even has a reccomended brand. La historia de Candi Cane Corki y de dónde viene; escrito con sus propias palabras

En el año 1975 después de permanecer una semana en Cancún, me aventuré a Cozumel. Volamos desde Cancún en un pequeño Cessna. Por la lentitud, hubiera podido arrojar una caña y venir pescando durante toda la travesía.

Creí que las aguas y playas de Cancún eran bellas, hasta que llegué al que en aquel entonces era el Hotel Intercontinental (Presidente). Me quedé sin aliento estando frente al mar en el primer piso; sólo eran dos pisos, no había torre en aquel entonces. Fue la primera ocasión para mis hijos de dos y cuatro años y se les dio trato de realeza.  

En el transcurso de los años, mi vida dio muchos giros y vueltas, y en cierto momento a mitad de la década de los años 90 después de una, dos, seis semanas de hoteles, encontré un lugar de 1 recámara en el centro y pensé que algún día Cozumel se convertiría en mi hogar. Desde entonces, aquí estoy.

Me topé con la tienda de buceo Papa Hogs e hice buenas migas con Margaret y Mike… e incluso fui niñera de sus mascotas cuando ellos no estaban en la Isla. Al pasar de los años he visto lo generosos que han sido al retribuir a la Isla y lo bien que trataban a sus empleados. En Navidad siempre hacían una fiesta, con mucha comida, mucha bebida, regalos para todos los hijos de sus empelados. Trajeron a diversos Santa Claus durante los años, pero ninguno tan perfecto como Santa Ron, procedente de Oklahoma, para repartir los regalos. Un año me pidieron que me presentara como duende, pero el disfraz pertenecía a alguien de mayor tamaño que yo. Durante años continué ayudando a Santa a repartir regalos en Papa Hogs, y de repente llegaron solicitudes para ir con Santa a otros lugares que Margaret apoyaba, como la escuela CAM para los pequeños, y después la escuela CAM en Avenida 30.

Necesitaba un disfraz que me quedara mejor y así nació Candi Cane Corki. Con el paso de los años he usado 4 disfraces (la lluvia no ayuda), y ahora a Santa Ron y yo participamos (gratuitamente) en todo tipo de festividades navideñas para los pequeños como la fiesta anual de zapatos/regalos de Kelly’s, cuatro viajes a Las Fincas con diversos grupos llevando alimentos, juguetes y muñecos de peluche a los pequeños; fiestas privadas donde los invitados son gente con muchas necesidades y a quienes se les invita a un paseo en bote, comida y regalos adquiridos por la anfitriona, como Eva de Blue Angel en el Cozumel Beach Hostel; Nelly de Woody’s compra bolsas grandes de dulces que repartimos en la Plaza, y más…

Bueno, ya llegó el año 2015  …aún paso el verano con mis padres de 93 y 95 años de edad, con mis hermanas, y trato de visitar a mis hijos/nietos en el Pacífico noroccidental, pero Septiembre es el mes que regreso a “CASA”.

Todo esto es para los niños y de retribuir a esta bella Isla. Lo que me hace regresar son las personas, los amigos que he hecho y los niños que tienen tantas necesidades.

Ahora ya tengo un calendario y comienzo a mantener el seguimiento de los días, noches y fines de semana que la gente quiere pide que Santa y Candi Cane Corki les visite.  …todos los años reparto 7000 bastones de dulce de 3”, que amablemente me traen personas que son amigas de Cozumel, que desean ser parte del espíritu navideño. Esta es una vida maravillosa y estoy bendecida al poder retribuir algo tan hermoso a esta asombrosa Isla.

Durante la época navideña Corki, también conocida como Candi Cane Corki, reparte los bastones de dulce y otros dulces en diversos sitios en Cozumel. Ya que es muy difícil encontrar los tradicionales bastones de dulce en Cozumel, siempre anda buscando gente que pueda traerlos. Si viaja a Cozumel y tiene algo de espacio adicional en su equipaje, piense en incluir unos mini-bastones de dulce. Ya que  Corki es una experta en bastones de dulce, ella recomienda una marca especifica. Pueden encontrar a Corki en el Grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook.
