Cozumel's Perimeter Road Nearly Ready For November Ironman

Construction is nearly complete on Cozumel’s new perimeter road, just in time for the upcoming full Ironman event in November.  In addition to new construction, older portions of the road were rehabilitated for the athletes.  In fact, municipal officials are reporting expectations for all but a single one kilometer portion to be completed before November 25th.

La construcción de la carretera perimetral de Cozumel se encuentra casi terminada, justo a tiempo el próximo acontecimiento del Ironman completo en Noviembre. Además de una nueva construcción, se rehabilitaron porciones antiguas para los atletas. De hecho, las autoridades municipales reportan expectativas para todo, menos la distancia de un kilometro que se terminará antes del 25 de noviembre.
Este será el 4º año que Cozumel es anfitrión de este evento totalmente vendido, que se llevará a cabo el 25 de Noviembre. October celebrations and the beginnings of the Day of the Dead

In Mexico, no matter where you look and what month it is, there are always events and celebrations taking place throughout the country. Every year, from the first Friday in October until the first Monday in November, Guadalajara’s month-long festival takes place around a specific theme; this year’s motto is “47 years of tradition.” The popular event in the state of Jalisco has entertainers, dances, films, ballet, paintworks, the traditional palenque, concerts and cockfights, livestock fair, sport activities, also handmade and industrial products are sold.

From October 3 to the 21st. in Guanajuato, birthplace of the Mexican War of Independence and considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO, one of the four most important artistic and cultural events of its type in the world takes place: the International Cervantine Festival. As member of the European Festivals Association and marking its 40th edition with more than 3000 performers this year, this colonial city, its plazas, parks,  theaters and streets are filled with the most relevant expressions in opera, theater, dance, visual arts, music, film and literature from the five continents. One can join the bustle of the traditional “callejoneadas” while between laughs and lively tunes played by the estudiantinas  you walk along cobblestone streets discovering many secrets of Guanajuato’s streets, such as the famous “Alley of the Kiss”, narrow enough that it allowed lovers to kiss each other from their balconies. This Festival has its roots in the performance of short plays with a tint of comedy, the Interludes, written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the renowned author of a famous book which begins with the words “In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen...”, the immortal Don Quixote. Cervantes is considered one of the world’s leading representatives of the Spanish language sharing with William Shakespeare an honored place in universal literature. Cervantes and Shakespeare never met but, interestingly enough, both died on the same year. 

In Mexico, celebrations reflect a rich pre-Hispanic heritage, culture and diversity as well as the religious influence of Spanish colonialism. Such is the case in Yucatan with the feast to the Exalted Christ from October 18 to the 28th, when the most revered image is carried in procession by pilgrims of Sitilpech all the way to Izamal, where candles and flowers are placed at the foot of the image. The second Monday in October, in the quaint village of Santa Maria del Tule in Oaxaca a celebration takes place around one of the oldest trees in the world: the colossal 41 mts high, 2000 plus old Tule Tree (Montezuma Cypress)  or Ahuehuete ("old man of the water" in ancient Nahuatl)   Two Mixtec legends speak about the origins of the Tule Tree (“tree of illumination”); one tells us that the tree was planted around 1400 years ago by Ehécatl, god of the wind; the second one speaks about mighty king Condoy, builder of the city of Mitla, who sat down to rest and as he stuck his cane into the ground, the plant sprung forth.

En México, sin importar a dónde se mire y qué mes del año es, siempre hay eventos y celebraciones a través del país. Cada año, del primer día viernes de Octubre hasta el primer lunes en Noviembre, el festival con duración de un mes en Guadalajara se lleva a cabo alrededor de un tema específico; el lema de este año es “47 años de tradición. Este popular acontecimiento en el estado de Jalisco cuenta con la presencia de artistas, bailes, películas, ballet, obras de arte, el tradicional palenque, conciertos, peleas de gallos, feria ganadera, actividades deportivas, y la venta de productos artesanales e industriales.

Del 3 al 21 de Octubre en Guanajuato, cuna de la Guerra de Independencia Mexicana y considerado por la UNESCO como Patrimonio Mundial, uno de los cuatro eventos artísticos y culturales más importantes de su tipo en el mundo, se lleva a cabo: el Festival Internacional Cervantino. Como miembro de la Asociación de Festivales Europeos y celebrando la 40ª edición con más de 3000 artistas, esta ciudad colonial, sus plazas, parques, teatros y calles se ven colmadas con las expresiones más relevantes en ópera, teatro, danza, arte visual, música, cine y literatura proveniente de los cinco continentes. Uno puede ser parte de la algarabía en las tradicionales callejoneadas, mientras que entre risas y la música alegre  de las estudiantinas,
camina por las calles empedradas descubriendo muchos secretos de las calles de Guanajuato, tal como el famoso Callejón del Beso, lo suficientemente estrecho que permitía a los amantes besarse de un balcón a otro. Este Festival tiene sus raíces en la  ejecución de pequeñas obras con un tinte de comedia, los Entremeses, escritos por Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, el reconocido autor de un famoso libro que comienza con las palabras “En un lugar de La Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, no ha mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo…”, el inmortal Don Quijote. A Cervantes se le considera uno de los principales representantes del idioma español, compartiendo con William Shakespeare un sitio de honor en la literatura universal. Cervantes y Shakespeare nunca se conocieron pero, curiosamente, fallecieron el mismo año.

En México, las celebraciones reflejan el rico legado prehispánico, la cultura y la diversidad así como la influencia religiosa del colonialismo español. Tal es el caso en Yucatán con la fiesta al Cristo Exaltado del 18 al 28 de Octubre, cuando la imagen más venerada es llevada en una procesión por los peregrinos de Sitilpech hasta Izamal, donde se colocan velas y flores al pie de la imagen. El segundo día lunes durante el mes de Octubre, en el pintoresco pueblo de Santa Maria del Tule en Oaxaca, se lleva a cabo una celebración alrededor de uno de los árboles más antiguos en el mundo: el viejo Árbol de Tule o Ahuehuete (“viejo del agua” en náhuatl) de 41 metros de altura y más de 2000 de antigüedad In Dos leyendas mixtecas hablan de los orígenes del Arbol de Tule (“el árbol de la iluminación”); una nos dice que el árbol fue plantado hace aproximadamente 1400 años por Ehécatl, dios del viento; la segunda habla del poderoso rey Condoy, constructor de la ciudad de Milta, quien se sentó a descansar y al clavar su bastón en el suelo, la planta brotó.

October celebrations and the beginnings of the Day of the Dead

During colonial times, in order to preserve religious values, the indigenous communities adapted the new religion into their ancestral beliefs which brought forth very particular fusions. One of these adaptations can be seen on the October 4 celebration to Saint Francis of Assisi in Cuetzalan, Puebla, where the town is decked-out with many spectacular dances, and the Dance of the Quetzales is the most representative. This ritual dance from pre-Hispanic times was devoted to the sun and the dancers still wear large circular and colorful headdresses, the cuetzaltique, emulating the colors of the quetzal bird. 

The most colorful, magical and historical representation of the Mexican culture in October-November is expressed in the millenary tradition of the Day of the Dead. Despite of the best efforts of Franciscan missionaries who modified the original date of the celebration, which in turn derives from Celt traditions, ancient rituals to the dead survived strongly rooted. These rituals were also closely associated to the end of the farming cycle. Pre-Hispanic cultures were not afraid of death as they believed that death and life were part of an unending cycle that must be accepted as a natural succession of the universe. Even though the religion brought by the Spaniards in the XV century implanted fear to death, the vision of the ancients towards death was so strong that it prevailed. In all cultures in ancient Mexico, death had a very important place; a place where all immortal souls arrived. The Nahua and Mexica peoples called this place Mictlán. However, not all dead were the same. Many became gods; warriors became birds with wondrous plumage, whose mission was to escort the sun, Tonatiuh, every day and women who died giving birth arrived to Omeyocan, the paradise of the Sun. However, the trip to Mictlán was not easy as the dead must cross a very deep river, fight wild beasts, etc. Therefore people were buried with an obsidian knife, enough food and drink for the trip and a dog to tag along; and if this was an important leader, servants were also buried with the leader. The Maya considered the soul as indestructible, invisible and eternal, and death was a cyclical continuity between life and death. The dead traveled to the underworld, Xibalbá, and were buried with corn, food, drink, personal belongings and also a dog.

The ancient magic, beliefs, rituals, offerings and lore survived to the present day, revealed by different expressions of each region in Mexico.

Celebraciones de Octubre y los inicios del Día de Muertos

Durante la época colonial, para conservar sus valores religiosos, las comunidades indígenas adaptaron la nueva religión dentro de sus creencias ancestrales las cuales resultaron en fusiones muy particulares. Una de estas adaptaciones puede observarse en la celebración del 4 de Octubre a San Francisco de Asís en Cuetzalan, Puebla, donde el pueblo se engalana con muchos bailes espectaculares, y el Baile de los Quetzales es el más representativo. Este baile ritual prehispánico era dedicado al sol, y los danzantes aún portan grandes penachos circulares y coloridos, los cuetzaltique, que emulan los colores del pájaro quetzal. 

La representación más colorida, mágica e histórica de la cultura mexicana durante Octubre-Noviembre se encuentra expresada en la tradición milenaria del Día de los Muertos. A pesar de los esfuerzos de los misioneros franciscanos quienes modificaron la fecha original de la celebración, la cual a su vez deriva de las tradiciones celtas, los antiguos rituales a los muertos sobrevivieron fuertemente arraigadas. Estos rituales también se encontraban estrechamente ligados con el final del ciclo agrícola. Las culturas prehispánicas no temían a la muerte pues creían que la muerte y la vida eran parte de un ciclo interminable que debida aceptarse como una sucesión natural del universo. A pesar de que la religión traída por los españoles en el siglo XV implanto el miedo a la muerte, la visión de los antiguos hacia la muerte era tan fuerte que prevaleció. En todas las culturas del México antiguo, la muerte tenía un sitio muy especial; un lugar adonde llegaban todas las almas inmortales. Los nahuas y mexicas llamaban a este sitio Mictlán. Sin embargo, no todos los muertos eran iguales. Muchos se convertían en dioses; los guerreros se convertían en aves con plumajes maravillosos, cuya misión era acompañar todos los días al sol, Tonatiuh; y las mujeres que fallecían en el parto llegaban a Omeyocan, el paraíso del Sol. Sin embargo, el viaje a Mictlán no era sencillo pues los muertos debían cruzar un rio muy profundo, luchar contra bestias salvajes, etc. Por ello eran enterrados con un cuchillo de obsidiana, suficiente alimento y bebida para el viaje, y un perro como acompañante; y en el caso de un personaje importante, también  éste era enterrado con sus sirvientes. Los mayas consideraban que el alma era indestructible, invisible y eterna, y la muerte era una continuación cíclica entre la vida y la muerte. Los muertos viajaban al inframundo, Xibalbá, y eran enterrados con maíz, alimentos, bebida, bienes personales y, también, un perro.  

La antigua magia, creencias, rituales, ofendas y costumbres han sobrevivido hasta el presente, reflejándose a través de las diferentes expresiones de cada región en México.

Halloween Celebrations Planned in Cozumel

Although Halloween is a holiday traditionally not celebrated in Mexico, it’s really caught on here in Cozumel. In fact, this year, there are a variety of ways to celebrate. 

On Sunday, October 28th,  from 4 – 8 pm will be a children’s Halloween party at Tikila and Paprika Restaurant.  Tickets are only $25 pesos each, and are available pre-sale at both locations! There will be a Haunted House,  and a trick or treating circuit, a children’s buffet, games and crafts!   Donation of gently used clothing will also be collected for the children of "Ranchitos" and any proceeds from the event will go toward them as well. It has become a tradition to celebrate Halloween in a charitable way. This year, the Humane Society of Cozumel Island and Carlos n Charlie’s celebrate HAWL-O-WEEN on October 31st. Plan your costumes, donate some candy and decorations, get your tickets, bring your kids and let’s have a great night. 
Doors open at 7 PM, buffet is served from 8 – 11 PM and party ends when it ends… 

There will be raffle tickets sold, chances to win prizes, a bake sale, musical chairs, costume contests, photo booth and a very spooky haunted house!

Celebraciones de Halloween en Cozumel

Aún cuando Halloween no es una celebración tradicional en México, hay quienes sí lo celebran en Cozumel. De hecho, este año existe una variedad de formas para celebrar.

El domingo 28 de octubre de 4 a 8 p.m. habrá una fiesta infantil de Halloween en los restaurantes Tikila y Paprika. ¡Los boletos sólo cuestan $25 pesos por persona y están disponibles en pre-venta en ambos lugares! ¡Habrá una casa embrujada y el típico “trick or treat” (travesura o dulce), buffet para niños, juegos y manualidades! El donativo de ropa en buen estado para los niños de "Ranchitos" y toda ganancia del evento se destinará también para ellos. ¡Venga y disfrute de este evento familiar! Humane Society Pets of the Week

Over the next two weeks of October in keeping with the festive season of Halloween, we will be featuring our black pets for adoption, and a few orange kitties too!

Meet Nogal, just a beautiful sweet soul, don't let his black fur put you off. We suspect his owner dumped him in the middle of the night as HS staff found him cowering in an empty lot very close to the shelter. He is an extremely loving dog, that will lay down and roll on his back for a belly rub the first chance he can get. He is a young boy, only 1 year old and he is quite small only weighs 11 kg. He would make a wonderful family pet!

Abundance of black and orange kitties for adoption!!! Please come on down and visit our kitties! Also consider stopping by Mega Meow held every thursday from 6pm to 8pm at the lower floor of Mega Shopping center and don't forget about our weekly kitten cuddling event, every Saturday from 11am to 2pm at the shelter!

LAS FINCAS SPAY/NEUTER CAMPAIGN: Huge success this last Saturday in Las Fincas! The Cozumel Humane Society went mobile, taking the team and many volunteers to the colonia of Las Fincas. 70 dogs and 15 cats were sterilized!!! We are very grateful for the participation of community veterinarians: Julio C Guterrez Cetina of Centro Medico Veterinario Cozumel, Lilia Solis Vega, a local mobile vet, specializing in house calls and Omar Pena Lara of Watch Dog Veterinary Clinic. We just want to say thank you again to all the wonderful volunteers that participated and to the people of Las Fincas for coming out and taking responsibility for their pets! We will be returning to Las Fincas in November and we will announce the date soon!

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

¡Durante las próximas dos semanas del mes de Octubre y a la par de la temporada de fiestas de Halloween, vamos a promocionar la adopción de nuestras mascotas de pelaje color negro, ¡y también unos cuantos gatitos anaranjados!

Conozcan a Nogal, un alma hermosa y dulce, no deje que su pelaje negro le desanime. Tenemos la sospecha de que su dueño lo abandonó a media noche ya que el personal de la Sociedad Humanitaria lo encontró, atemorizado, en un terreno baldío muy cerca del refugio. Es un perro muy cariñoso que, en la primera oportunidad que tiene, se acuesta y rueda sobre su espalda para una caricia en su vientre. Es un chico joven, de sólo 1 año de edad y es bastante pequeño, tan sólo pesa 11 kg. ¡Sería una mascota maravillosa para la familia!

¡Tenemos gran cantidad de gatitos colores negro y naranja para adopción! ¡Por favor vengan y visiten a nuestros gatitos! ¡También consideren venir a Mega Meow todos los días jueves de 18:00 a 20:00 hrs. en la planta baja del centro comercial Mega; ¡y olviden nuestro evento semanal abrazos a los gatitos todos los días sábado de 11 a.m. a 2 p.m. en el refugio!

CAMPAÑA DE ESTERILIZACIÓN/CASTRACIÓN EN LAS FINCAS
¡Gran  éxito el sábado pasado en Las Fincas! La Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel se hizo ambulante, llevando al equipo y a muchos voluntarios a la colonia de Las Fincas. ¡Se esterilizaron70 perros y 15 gatos! Estamos muy agradecidos por la participación de los veterinarios de la comunidad: Julio C. Gutiérrez Cetina del Centro Médico Veterinario Cozumel, Lilia Solís Vega, una veterinaria local móvil que se especializa en visitas a domicilio, y Omar Peña Lara de la Clínica Veterinaria Watch Dog. ¡Sólo queremos dar las gracias de nuevo a todos los voluntarios maravillosos que participaron y a la gente de Las Fincas por salir y hacerse responsables de sus mascotas! Volveremos a Las Fincas durante Noviembre y pronto anunciaremos la fecha.

Blue Dahlia Wellness Center Grand Opening Next Tuesday, 23rd

Blue Dahlia Wellness Center will be opening its doors here in Cozumel, on Tuesday, October 23rd in style with a big celebration.  A new concept in Cozumel, Blue Dahlia will provide customers with a relaxing, healing and rejuvenating atmosphere where mind and body needs can be met. Devoted to providing holistic methods of acupuncture, massage, body work, and energy work in a relaxing, serene setting that promotes health and well-being, Blue Dahlia Wellness Center is the creation of Jennifer Hanbury Pobiak.  Jen’s labor has created a healing center for travelers and local residents to escape the stresses of life, work toward better health, heal from injury and rejuvenate. Blue Dahlia will also carry a line of natural and organic skin care products from a wide array of Certified Organic essential oils and blends, including body scrubs, face and body creams, essential oil body sprays, sports balms and more.

Tour the completely remodeled center on Tuesday, October 22 from 5 – 9 pm.  Sample the skincare products, explore the treatment options and even enter to win products. 

Jennifer Hanbury Pobiak is an Acupuncturist trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine, who  holds a Masters level  from acupuncture program from the Maryland Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Washington Metropolitan area of Bethesda, MD. After passing the board certification with the National Certification Commission on Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), Jennifer worked in a private group practice in Rockville and Bethesda, Maryland for 8 years before moving permanently to Cozumel. Besides a background in general health and digestive issues, she has studied and specialized in Women’s Health/Fertility, Sports Medicine and is an Arvigo™ Maya Massage Practitioner. She is currently studying Organic Body Care with the East West School of Herbal & Aromatic Studies.  Jennifer is also an avid scuba diver and amateur underwater photographer (which is what brought her to the island her first time in 1994).

“I am so excited to be able to bring the healing modalities of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine to the island. The one thing I learned from working in a group practice in the Washington DC area was the spirit of community and the willingness to work with other practitioners to collectively put our minds together to come up with a treatment protocol to help our patients. By working together (doctors, acupuncturists, naturopathic doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, massage therapists, reiki workers and more), we were able to collectively find the right path to wellness for our patients through a variety of therapies and modalities. El Centro de Bienestar Blue Dahlia abrirá sus puertas en Cozumel el día martes 23 de octubre, ofreciendo con estilo en una gran celebración. Como nuevo concepto en Cozumel, Blue Dahlia dará a los clientes un ambiente relajante, de curación y rejuvenecimiento donde las necesidades de la mente y el cuerpo pueden quedar satisfechas. Con dedicación para proporcionar métodos holísticos de acupuntura, de masaje, trabajo corporal y trabajo de energía en un ambiente relajado y sereno que promueve la salud y el bienestar, el Centro de Bienestar Blue Dahlia es la creación de Jennifer Hanbury Pobiak. A través de su trabajo Jen ha creado un centro de sanación para los visitantes y residentes locales, para escapar del estrés de la vida, trabajar para lograr una mejor salud, para sanar heridas y rejuvenecer. Jennifer Hanbury Pobiak es acupunturista, capacitada en medicina tradicional china, quien cuenta con la maestría del programa de acupuntura del Instituto Maryland de Medicina Tradicional China en el área metropolitana de Washington-Bethesda, Maryland. Después de aprobar la certificación que otorga el Consejo de la Comisión Nacional de Certificación de Acupuntura y Medicina Oriental (NCCAOM, por sus siglas en inglés), Jennifer trabajó en una clínica privada en Rockville y Bethesda, estado de Maryland, durante 8 años antes de trasladarse definitivamente a Cozumel. Además de sus conocimientos en salud general y problemas digestivos, ha estudiado y se ha especializado en la Salud de la Mujer/Fertilidad, Medicina Deportiva y en Masaje Maya con la Técnica Arvigo™. En la actualidad está realizando estudios para Cuidados Orgánicos del Cuerpo con la escuela East West de Estudios en Hierbas y Aromáticos. Jennifer es también una ávida buceadora y fotógrafa submarina aficionado (lo que la atrajo a la Isla la primera ocasión en 1994).

“Estoy muy emocionada en poder traer a la Isla las modalidades curativas de la acupuntura y la medicina china. Lo que aprendí al trabajar en la práctica de grupo en el área de Washington DC, fue el espíritu solidario y la buena disposición de trabajar con otros profesionales uniendo nuestras mentes para llegar a un protocolo de tratamiento que ayude a nuestros pacientes. Release Baby Turtles –  Turtle Hatching Season is in full swing.  You can find  Cozumel’s turtle program  trailer on the windward side of the island, is sponsored by the Cozumel Dept of Ecology, which is headed by Biol. Rafael  Chacon  T-Shirts and information available at the Department of Ecology Av. 65 and 11 street. Staff will be in the office from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Weekdays. Playa del Carmen Marathon - For those who love to run, Playa will host the first ecological marathon and half marathon, totalrunning.com for entries, there is also a 10 k. and a 3k...so everyone can participate!!

 Results of the Trashy Little Group Beach Clean Up –  What a great turnout for the Trashy Event for October! Lots of little plastics to pick up and some big stuff too, added up to 34 bags of unsightly trash off the beach near the Hotel Ventanas al Mar. This gorgeous stretch of sand beach is now free of debris and ready for Sunday Funday. If you happen to go past that area, take a good look - lots of people put lots of sweat into that area, and the results are astounding.  Near our clean up spot we also noticed 7 other bags of debris that some kind citizen had already picked up as well. Kudos to whoever you are! Big thanks go out to all the volunteers who participated.  It feels great to help and do good for Cozumel...but let's face it - PRIZES ON THE BEACH ARE FUN! Liberación de tortugas bebés -  La temporada de eclosión de las tortugas se encuentra en pleno apogeo. Pueden encontrar el remolque del programa de la tortuga en Cozumel en al lado oriental de la isla, que es patrocinado por la Dirección de Ecología a cargo del Biólogo Rafael Chacón. Las camisetas e información están disponibles en la Dirección de Ecología en Ave. 65 con Calle 11. Durante el transcurso de la semana el personal laborará de las 10:00 a.m. a las 12:00 p.m. Si desea obtener más información sobre las actividades con las tortugas, donar o comprar una camiseta oficial, Rafael, Ricardo y el resto del personal estará ahí para servirle. Resultados de la limpieza de playas del grupo Trashy Little – ¡Qué gran concurrencia tuvo el evento Trashy  de Octubre! Se recogieron muchos plásticos pequeños y también cosas grandes que se sumaron a las 34 bolsas de desagradable basura recogida cerca del hotel Ventanas al Mar. Este precioso tramo de playa ya está libre de escombros y listo para el “Sunday Funday”(domingo divertido). Si por casualidad pasa por esa área, no deje de observar; mucha gente hizo grandes esfuerzos en esa zona, y los resultados son asombrosos. Cerca de nuestro lugar de limpieza también vimos otras 7 bolsas de desechos que algún amable ciudadano también había recogido. ¡Felicitaciones a quien quiera que seas! ¡Muchas gracias a todos los voluntarios que participaron! Se siente muy bien ayudar y hacer el bien a Cozumel... pero seamos sinceros ¡LOS PREMIOS EN LA PLAYA SON DIVERTIDOS! Gracias, como siempre, a los patrocinadores de nuestros premios. ¿Por qué no ser condescendientes y decir lo mucho que apreciamos su participación?
