WHAT IS CASA HOGAR JUAN PABLO II   – A nursing home named after Pope John Paul II, built for the elderly of Cozumel by the Federal Government some 6 years ago.

WHO ARE WE – We are the “Amigos de Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II”, a non-profit group of expats, and locals, who support the nursing home with funding, improvement projects and enrichment programs. Although the residents are cared for by nuns, our organization has no affiliation to any religious order.

WHERE IS CASA HOGAR JUAN PABLO II –   The home is located on Av. 95, north of the transversal highway at the loop road round-a-bout. We are located across the street from the Cuidad de Los Angeles orphanage.

WHAT IS OUR MISSION –  To assure there are funds available so that every “Abuelito” in need will have a home, and to ensure that home is safe, secure, and properly maintained.

OUR 2016 GOALS – Our goal in 2016 is to build an annual income for Juan Pablo II, from monthly donations, to cover any operational shortfalls and additionally, anonymous donors have pledged $6000usd in matching funds if another $6000usd can be raised by September 1, 2016. The funds will be used to complete the perimeter security wall and to install a roof over the laundry. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE. INTRODUCING OUR ABUELITO VIRGILIO

Don Virgilio, who is known as the Ambassador of Juan Pablo II, has been at the home for about three years. He was born in Merida, but is unsure if he has family or where they might be. He eventually found his way to Cozumel and for many years lived in the jungle (with his 14 dogs) on the north part of the island beyond the golf course. He supported himself by doing odd jobs for neighbors and by doing a bit of trading. Many of you will remember Don Virgilio pushing or pedaling his tricycle, piled high with treasures, bound for the local market.

Virgilio came to the home after suffering a stroke which no longer allowed him to live alone. Now he spends his time drawing and painting and waiting for the occasional guest to stop by for a chat and some stories of the past. Meeting him will enrich your time in Cozumel.

¿QUÉ ES CASA HOGAR JUAN PABLO II? – Es un asilo que debe su nombre al papa Juan Pablo II y fue construido hace 6 años por el gobierno federal para beneficio de los ancianos de Cozumel.

¿QUIÉNES SOMOS? – Somos “Amigos de Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II”, un grupo sin fines de lucro formado por ex patriados y habitantes locales que apoyan al asilo con financiamiento, proyectos para realizar mejoras y programas de beneficios. No obstante que los residentes se encuentran bajo los cuidados de monjas, nuestra organización no está afiliada a ninguna denominación religiosa.

¿DÓNDE SE LOCALIZA CASA HOGAR JUAN PABLO II? – En la Avenida 95, al norte de la carretera transversal por la glorieta que conecta las calles. Estamos frente al orfanato Ciudad de Ángeles.

¿CUÁL ES NUESTRA MISIÓN? – Garantizar que existan fondos disponibles para que cada abuelito con necesidades tenga un hogar, y que el hogar esté seguro y se brinde el debido mantenimiento.

NUESTRAS METAS EN EL AÑO 2016 – Nuestra meta en 2016 es formar un ingreso anual para Juan Pablo II a través de donaciones mensuales y con ello cubrir mermas operativas. Lo que es más, patrocinadores anónimos han prometido donar una suma igual a $6000 dólares estadounidenses si al 1º de septiembre de 2016 se logra reunir la cantidad de $6000 dólares estadounidenses.  Los fondos se utilizaran para completar el muro perimetral e instalar un techo sobre el área de lavandería. PRESENTAMOS A NUESTRO ABUELITO VIRGILIO

Conocido como el embajador de Juan Pablo II, Don Virgilio ha residido en el asilo desde hace casi tres años. Es originario de Mérida y no está seguro si tiene familia o dónde podrían estar. A la larga encontró su camino hacia Cozumel y durante muchos años vivió en la selva (con sus 14 perros) en la zona norte, pasando el campo de golf. Se sostuvo haciendo trabajos esporádicos para los vecinos y algunos negocios. Muchos de ustedes recordarán a Don Virgilio empujando o pedaleando su triciclo, lleno hasta el tope con tesoros, dirigiéndose hacia el mercado municipal.

Virgilio llegó al asilo después de sufrir una apoplejía, lo que ya no le permitió vivir solo. Ahora pasa el tiempo dibujando, pintando y esperando a platicar con alguien y compartir historias del pasado. Conocerlo enriquecerá el tiempo que usted tenga en Cozumel.

An ex-Connecticut Yankee who has called Cozumel home for over 18 years, Laura ran away to the Caribbean years ago, bumped around the islands teaching SCUBA diving, lost some time in Jamaica, and finally stopped in Cozumel for a 2 week vacation that hasn’t ended yet. With a degree in Journalism from a fancy private college she convinced her parents to pay for, Laura writes, edits, and creates the weeklyCozumel 4 You news,social media, and promotional articles about the island, as well as moderates the Cozumel 4 You Facebook group, which currently has over 25,000 members. Her long suffering husband, Fabian, has long since resigned himself to having zero private life, as he’s been involved in her various schemes and plots since his arrival. Proud parents to a variety of rescue dogs and cats, Laura continues to be the bane of her traditional Mexican mother-in-law’s existence, as she muses her way through life in the Mexican Caribbean.

Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura crea semanalmente Cozumel 4You, medios sociales y artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y también es moderadora en el grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook que actualmente cuenta con 25,000 miembros. Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
