Since the 1970’s scientists have been studying reef sharks that come to rest in cave formations between Isla Mujeres and Cancun.  Generally speaking, sharks are  “obligate ram breathers,” meaning they force the oxygen in the water through their gills by swimming, so  a cave where they “sleep” was an unusual discovery and has become quite a popular dive site.  Recently, according to an article in local news, scuba legend, Alberto Friscione Carrascosa, has reported the discovery of a new location, located just 14 miles away from Cozumel.  While the location of the cave has not been disclosed, this may be an excellent opportunity for scientists and scuba enthusiasts to study this phenomenon further.
