Winter Group of Cruz Roja Volunteers Seeks Additional Members

If you’re wintering in Cozumel and would like to help out the island community here is a great opportunity.  Volunteer just three hours a week at the airport departure lounge soliciting donations for the Cozumel Cruz Roja.  It’s a lot of fun interacting with travelers who have just spent a vacation in Cozumel, and a great way to be an ambassador to the island.        Airport shifts generally start mid-morning and are only 3 hours in duration. Depending on departure schedules, some days will need one or two shifts. Work alone in your provided Cruz Roja smock and donation “bucket” or invite a spouse or friend share in the fun.  The Airport Group volunteers will be required to obtain a security badge in order to enter the airport’s departure lounge. Since the administrator at the Cruz Roja is assisting in obtaining the badges, we are looking for people who would agree to volunteer a minimum of six weeks.

Overall, the Airport Group will be active for ten weeks this winter, beginning mid-January through the end of March. On Friday, January 10 the group will submit the forms to obtain the security badges, however, if you’re arriving later, we can also assist you according to your schedule.

Last year between the combined efforts of The Carnival Group and The Airport Group volunteers for Cruz Roja Cozumel, there are approximately $9,838 (USD) in a dedicated Cruz Roja bank account, set up solely for the purchase of a sonogram machine for the Cruz Roja Clinic. The Carnival Group obtained approximately $6,705 (USD) in donations and The Airport Group obtained approximately $3,123 (USD) in 2013.

The clinic’s board of directors selected the goal of purchasing a sonogram machine for The Carnival Group and The Airport Group’s  combined effort. To raise the $18,000 (USD) for the purchase, it will take volunteer efforts in 2013 and 2014 – two years – to raise the funds. As you can see, we reached a little over half our goal in our first year. The board emphasizes the addition of this piece of equipment will be a valuable lifesaving expansion of services to the people of Cozumel. Every penny collected by The Airport Group goes toward the purchase – a fact giving donors a reason to give generously.    We hope you’ll choose to be a part of this very worthwhile endeavor this winter. Please let me know if you will be joining us. Because Mardi Gras is later this year (March 4), you will be hearing about The Carnival Group the first week in February.for more information, please contact Sandy Timmons at rickandsandytimmons@yahoo.com
