Cozumel Prepares for Cedral Festival April 29th - May 3rd

Cozumel city officials are going all out for this year’s Cedral Festival, scheduled for April 29th – May 3rd. .  Reports indicate that the municipality is spending over $4 million pesos on maintenance, decorations, and musical artists, since the 2009 Cedral festival was cancelled due to H1N1.    The “Feria de El Cedral,” is one of Cozumel’s oldest events and includes diverse activities as horse racing, body building contests, amusement rides, and cultural activities.  This year’s musical line-up includes Aleks Synteks, Los Horóscopos de Durango and   Reik amongst others.    The Cedral Festival is intended to honor Santa Cruz de Sabán.

Los funcionarios de la ciudad de Cozumel van con todo para el Festival del Cedral las fechas son del  29 de abril –al  3 de mayo.  Los informes indican que el municipio está gastando más de $4 milliones pesos en mantenimiento, decoraciones y artistas musicales, desde el 2009 el festival de Cedral fue cancelado debido al H1N1. La "Feria del Cedral," es uno de los eventos más antiguos de Cozumel e incluye diversas actividades como carreras de caballos, concursos de fisicoculturismo, diversión y actividades culturales. El evento musical de este año incluye Aleks Synteks, Los Horóscopos de Durango y Reik, entre otros.  El Festival de Cedral es un honor para la Santa Cruz de Sabán.

Movie "El Viaje de La Tortuga" Free Screeing on Thursday April 15th

This Thursday, April 15th, Cine “Cecilio Borge” is showing a free screening of “El Viaje de La Tortuga” (The Journey of the Sea Turtle) This family-friendly movie details the long and dangerous journey of a young sea turtle from it’s birthplace on the beaches of Florida, all the way to Africa, and back, overcoming many dangers and obstacles along the way. “El Viaje de La Tortuga” is being shown in an effort to promote the protection and care of one of Cozumel’s most precious natural resources, our environment, and the sea turtle especially.  Cine “Cecilio Borge” is located on Benito Juarez, between Av. 30 and Av. 35.

Este jueves, 15 de abril, El Cine "Cecilio Borge" está mostrando una proyección gratis de "El Viaje de La Tortuga" los detalles de esta película familiar abarcan el viaje de la tortuga a través del mar  desde el lugar de su nacimiento hacia las playas de la Florida, y el recorrido hasta   África y  de vuelta, con  muchos peligros y obstáculos a lo largo del camino. "El Viaje de La Tortuga" se muestra para  promover la protección y cuidar  uno de los recursos naturales más preciados de Cozumel, nuestro medio ambiente y la tortuga de mar especialmente.  Cine "Cecilio Borge" se encuentra en Benito Juárez, entre Av. 30 y 35

May Events in Cozumel - Sacred Mayan Passage & Fishing Tournaments

The upcoming month of May is all about boating. May 14th – 16th is the “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas 2010,” the biggest fishing tournament of the entire year, since it takes place at what’s considered to be the height of billfish season.  Tournament official, Oswaldo Pavia, reported this week that they’re expecting record breaking number of registrations.   Last year’s grand prize was a Hummer, with a multitude of cars and scooters in the lower categories.

The 4th Sacred Mayan Crossing is also scheduled to take place at the end of May, from the 21 – 23rd.  26-foot canoes, crewed by 4 – 6 participants, will travel from Xcaret on the mainland, to the island of Cozumel and then back.  The three day event reenacts Mayan pilgrimages undertaken by the original Yucatan inhabitants.    Beginning with a trip to Xcaret, pilgrims engage in rituals to honor the goddess Ixchel, in an overnight celebration. At the first rays of the sun, the canoes enter the water en route for Cuzamil.  Upon arrival, more offerings are made to the goddess, and the canoes return to Playa del Carmen, on the mainland bringing the goddess’ omens of good fortune. 

El próximo mes de mayo es todo sobre paseos en bote. Del  14 – al  16 de mayo es el "Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas 2010," el mayor torneo de pesca de todo el año, ya que tiene lugar de altura, ya que se considera lo mejor de la temporada para capturar pez vela. El torneo oficial, Oswaldo Pavía, informó esta semana que está esperando un número récord de participantes El gran premio del año pasado fue una Hummer, aparte  de coches y motos en las categorías inferiores.

El 4 sagrado Cruce Maya es también programado para llevarse a cabo a finales de mayo, desde el 21 – al 23 de mayo. Las  Canoas, de 26 pies, con tripulacion de  4-o 6 participantes, viajando de Xcaret, hacia la isla de Cozumel y, de  regreso.  Los eventos recapitulan las peregrinaciones mayas emprendidas por los habitantes originales de Yucatán. A partir de un viaje a Xcaret, los peregrinos participan en rituales en honor a la diosa Ixchel, en una celebración de la noche hasta la mañana. En los primeros rayos del el sol, las canoas entrar al agua en la ruta para Cuzamil (Cozumel).  A su llegada, se realizan ceremonias a la diosa y el regreso igual parael regreso  de las canoas, hacia  Playa del Carmen, al continente con augurios de la diosa con buena fortuna.

Humane Society Pet of the Week - Perla Finds a Home

Another heartwarming story about a Cozumel street dog who finds  love,  Perla, the very diluted chihuahua mix was found on the streets and  brought her to the Humane Society. Although she was timid at first she soon became quite playful. Don and Caron who have a condo at the Residencias Reef met her while volunteering at the Shelter.  After returning to Canada, Caron could not stop thinking about her. She just returned and collected little Perla and took her to her condo. Perla’s future includes surfing, and  bi-country travel, flying back and forth with them from Canada to Cozumel.  You can see Perla and her new Mom, on the photos in the left hand column. 

Otra historia cálida acerca de un perro de la calle de Cozumel que encuentra amor, Perla, la muy diluida mezcla de chihuahua fue encontrada en las calles y la llevaron a la Sociedad Humanitaria. Al empezar ella era tímida pero pronto se convirtió en una perrita muy juguetona. Don y Caron que tienen un condominio en las Residencias Reef cuando ellos eran voluntarios la encontraron en el  refugio.  Después de regresar a Canadá, Caron no podía dejar de pensar en ella. Sólo volvió y recogió a Perlita y la llevó a su condominio. El futuro del Perla abarca viajes de surf, volando hacia adelante y hacia atrás con ellos desde Canadá a Cozumel.  Se pueden ver a Perla y su nueva mamá, en las fotos en la columna de la izquierda

Yoga Happy Hour Next Week - Friday April 16th - Tiki Tok

Join island residents and Cozumel 4 You for a different sort of Happy Hour on Friday April 16th. Starting at 6pm,Tammy Cervantes and the staff of Power Yoga Cozumel will be on hand at Tiki Tok Restaurant Bar, right on the waterfront. There will be a very brief discussion of yoga, it’s physical and mental benefits and even a very short introductory class free of charge!  All you’ll need to bring are comfortable clothes that you can move in!  Mind and body recharged, Tiki Tok will then offer 2 x 1 drink specials on both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from 8 – 10 p.m, with live music starting at 10 pm.. Wildfire Prevention

April is often a very dry time here on the island and Civil Protection asks your help to prevent wildfires after a small fire broke out last week. Please make sure that your cigarettes and cigars are extinguished and placed in non-burning containers. And please do not throw glass bottles on the ground or, if you see any, please pick them up -- they catch the sun and act as prisms which can start fires. 

Abril es a menudo un tiempo muy seco aquí en la isla y el agrupación de  Protección Civil pide su ayuda para prevenir incendios forestales, después de que un pequeño incendio estalló la semana pasada. Por favor, asegúrese de que sus cigarrillos y puros se apaguen y se coloquen en recipientes donde  no se prendan. Y por favor no arrojar botellas de vidrio sobre el pavimento o, si ves alguno, por favor, recogerlos—ya que estos pueden ocasionar  incendios.

Mexico to Start a Space Program

Mexican Congress Science and Technology Committee approved a bill last week, designed to start a space program for Mexico.  The new agency called, Agencia Espacial Mexicana (AEXA), will develop space activities in order to expand the country’s capacity in education, industry, science and technology. Cozumel Inspired Author to Host Booksigning at French Quarter

Anastasia Amor, a mystery- romance novelist, whose books are oftentimes Cozumel based, will be hosting a wine and cheese book signing on Thursday, April 29 from 7 – 9 pm at the French Quarter Restaurant.  Her latest novel is entitled “A Corpse for Cozumel,” other titles in her Adie Sturm detective series include “Days of the Dead” and “A Curse for Carnaval.”  For more information, check out her webpage. This is actually going to be filmed for a local TV station!  To stay up to date on their concert series, become a Facebook fan.  Aqua Bar/Hotel Flamingo is located on Calle 6 between Av 5 and Melgar.
