"The Current," Cousteau & Redford Narrated Documentary Filmed in Cozumel

Cozumel and the pristine coral reefs are serving as yet another film location.   In this case, the project is entitled,   “The Current” and is a 40 minute documentary, narrated by Jean-Michel Cousteau, and Robert Redford.  The documentary describes the story of six individuals, who are challenged by incredible obstacles, yet manage to become real heroes. The film follows their story as they learn to scuba dive and participate in other water sports, allowing them to once again have freedom of movement.   Funding for this project came through the Make A Hero non-profit, as well as federal, state and local tourism departments.  The Current’s director Kurt Miller, is also a war veteran with disabilities, and features professional diver Leo Morales, who recently set a deep diving record, here in Cozumel, for divers with disabilities.

Los arrecifes vírgenes de coral en Cozumel de nuevo sirven como locación para una filmación.  En este caso, el proyecto se  titula “The Current”” (La Corriente); un documental de 40 minutos de duración narrado por Jean-Michel Cousteau y Robert Redford que describe la historia de seis individuos quienes se encuentran frente a obstáculos increíbles, no obstante se las arreglan para convertirse en verdaderos héroes. La película sigue la historia de éstos en tanto aprenden a bucear y a participar en otros deportes acuáticos, permitiéndoles nuevamente tener libertad de movimiento. El financiamiento del proyecto se originó a través de la organización no lucrativa Make a Hero así como de las dependencias de turismo federal, estatal y local. El director de “The Current”, Kurt Miller, también es un veterano de guerra con discapacidades, y presenta al buzo profesional Leo Morales, quien en fechas recientes estableció un récord de buceo profundo aquí en Cozumel para buzos con discapacidades.

Third Annual Cozumel Air Show this Weekend

In commemoration of the third anniversary of Cozumel’s aerodrome, “Capitan Eduardo Toledo Parra,” there will be a free airshow this weekend, Saturday the 20th and Sunday the 21st.  In addition to stunt planes, there will be ultralight planes, radio controlled airplanes and even motorcycles and classic cars. The stunt pilots that will be on hand are world class, including Skip Stewart, and Melissa Pemberton.   If you haven’t attended ths event in previous years, don’t miss out!  It’s family friendly, tons of fun, and a great way to spend the day.  Entry is free.  For more information, check out the facebook event page. 

Tercer Espectáculo Anual Aéreo este fin de semana

 En conmemoración del tercer aniversario del aeródromo de Cozumel “Capitán Eduardo Toledo Parra”, se efectuará un espectáculo aéreo este fin de semana, sábado 20 y domingo 21. Además de aviones acrobáticos, también se presentarán aviones ultraligeros, aviones controlados por radio e incluso motocicletas y automóviles clásicos. Los pilotos de acrobacias que estarán presentes son de clase mundial, incluyendo a Skip Stewart y a Melissa Pemberton. Si no ha asistido a este evento anteriormente, ¡no se lo pierda! Parking Meters To Remain In Downtown Cozumel

While the agreement to install parking meters in downtown Cozumel was reached with the previous administration, Cozumel residents have been vocal in their disapproval in the way the meters are being patrolled.  Recently, municipal officials sat down with representatives of the Olympus S.A de C.V, the concession that operates the parking meters.  While the parking meters will not be removed completely, it is possible that there will be a reduction in the number of meters.  In fact, Victor Manuel Negrete Villalobos , the company’s general director,  announced the meters will continue to operate indefinitely.

A pesar que se logró un acuerdo durante la administración anterior respecto a la instalación de parquímetros en el Centro de Cozumel, los habitantes de Cozumel han manifestado claramente su desacuerdo en cuanto a la forma en que los parquímetros son monitoreados. En fechas recientes, funcionarios municipales se reunieron con los representantes de Olympus S.A. de C.V., empresa concesionaria que opera los parquímetros. Aunque los parquímetros no serán retirados en su totalidad, es posible que la cantidad de los mismos se reduzca. De hecho, Víctor Manuel Negrete Villalobos, director general de la empresa, dio a conocer que los parquímetros continuarán operando indefinidamente.

Expert Climatologists Expect a Busy Hurricane Season This Year

Expert Climatologists from Colorado State University are predicting a active storm season this year.  Their forecast for 2013 includes 18 named storms, with 9 of hurricanes.  This is the 4th year in a row that experts are declaring a busy season.  The average is 12 storms, including 6 hurricanes, three of which arrive with winds greater than 100/mph.

Climatólogos expertos esperan una agitada temporada de huracanes para este año

Los climatólogos expertos de la Universidad del Estado de Colorado pronostican una activa temporada de huracanes para este año. El pronóstico para el año 2013 incluye 18 tormentas con nombres y 9 huracanes. Este es el 4º año consecutivo que los expertos declaran una temporada activa. El promedio es de 12 tormentas, incluyendo 6 huracanes, de los cuales tres llegarán a tener vientos mayores a 160 km/hr.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

 The Blacks of the Week, Cozumel, love knows no color or breed, please fight against discrimination of malix dogs (mutts) and black color animals. There's over 10 black cats at the Humane Society (some in foster homes) there's even a couple that have grown up here, wich is very sad, we hope to see you at the shelter soon, so you can meet them.

 Pit male dog, 1 year old, daschund mix long hair. He was brought in on a very busy Sunday, while we were dealing with another emergency. The owner was advices to take him to a private clinic. The pit bull dogs of the owner's brother attacked the little dog. The owner took him to the vet, where Dr. Julio stabilized him, but the owner abandoned him. Now, Pit, as we call him is with us and ready for adoption. He's super small: 4kg. Very sweet and will make an excellent lap dog. admission date: April 10th, 2013.

Cassiopeia the cat, also called Cassie, female, 4 months old, she's in foster home with our volunteer cat specialist. She was rescued along her brother by some kids that found them in an old fridge, they still needed to be nursed, her brother Orion has been adopted. She's loving and playful, and she likes to p,at with other cats.

Found Pet of the week: Luckily "Botas" is back at home, after 2 days missing. Some of the lost pets arrive at the HSC, and they are also posted on Facebook thanks to the people that find them. Posting them in facebook helps a lot so that somebody that knows them might see them. Remember to walk your dog with collar, identification tag and a leash, always under your supervision. In case you  lose your pet, look for and report it near by, in Animal Control, at the Humane Society, local Private Clinics and in Facebook at "Mascotas Perdidas y Encontradas en Cozumel" (Lost and Found pets in Cozumel" this page is not related to the HSC)

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

 Los negritos de la semana, Cozumel, el amor no tienen color ni raza, por favor luchemos contra la discriminación de los perritos malix, y de los animales de color negro. Actualmente hay más de 10 gatos negros en la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel (algunos en hogares temporales) incluso un par de ellos han crecido aquí, lo cual da mucha tristeza, te esperamos en el refugio para que los conozcas.

 Pit es un macho de 1 año de edad, una mezcla de daschund de pelo largo. Lo trajeron un domingo muy ocupado al refugio, en el que ya estábamos atendiendo otra emergencia. Se le aconsejo a la dueña que lo llevara a una clínica privada. Los perros pitbull de su hermano atacaron a este pequeño. La dueña lo llevo al médico privado, donde el Dr. Julio lo estabilizó, pero la dueña lo dejó ahí. Ahora Pit, como lo llamamos, está con nosotros listo para adoptarse. Es súper pequeño: 4kg. Es muy dulce y será un buen perro para tener en el regazo. Fecha de Admisión: 10 de Abril de 2013.
 

Cassiopea, Cassie, hembra de 4 meses de edad, en hogar temporal con nuestra voluntaria experta en gatos. La rescataron junto con su hermano unos niños que los encontraron en un refrigerador. Aun necesitaban de alimentación con biberón. Su hermano Orion ya se adopto. Cassie es amorosa y juguetona y le gusta jugar con otros gatos.
 

Encontrado de la semana: Afortunadamente Botas ya está en casa, después de 2 días de estar extraviado. Algunas mascotas de la muchas que están extraviadas llegan a la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel, además las postean en facebook gracias a las personas que las encuentran, eso ayuda a que sean vistas pronto por algún conocido. Recuerda pasear a tu mascota con collar, placa de identificación y correa, siempre bajo tu supervisión, así podrás levantar sus heces evitando contaminar y cuidarás a donde va. En caso de extraviar a tu mascota búscala y repórtala por los alrededores, en el Centro de Control Animal, en la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel, en Clínicas Veterinarias y en facebook en "Mascotas Perdidas y Encontradas en Cozumel"" (esta página no está relacionada con la SHC)

The ABCD's of Dengue: A 4 Part Series

Remembering, re-editing and reloading.  It's been two years since our last outbreak of dengue in Cozumel; exactly on april 2011 I remember having the first case of hemorraghic dengue at San Miguel Clinic and, after discussing it with some colleagues we concurred: that was a "dengue year".
We tried to warn patients and authorities, the answer came three months later, once rain season started overtly, patients were filling hospitals and a very late attempt for prevention was just getting started.

I posted the following at blogtorchey.blogspot.com on its spanish version on june 2011, by that time, little had been made and misleading information was a current language on the streets.  In an effort to avoid our past experience and after a very assertive sugestion and precious help from the Cozumel4you team, here it is: the ABCDs for dengue. I decided not to edit pieces of the article that tell how was our scenario at that moment, the reason for this is explained within the first paragraph: we forget and lower the guard quite fast.  Whenever necessary or possible, I will add 2013 remarks and information which will be properly pointed out.

Though behind schedule, they arrived. After a very dry May in Cozumel, the rainy season came on mid June and a couple of heavy rains were enough for dengue season to formally begin; after five days, the reckoning was evident: five cases of dengue, four of them hemorrhagic. This is no alarm, however though it turns-up every year, we seem to forget about it; thus one of the reasons for writing about dengue. A second reason arises from remarks in hallways, in meetings and on the table, which, on the one hand suggest amnesia or ignorance about its monitoring and prevention or, otherwise, amongst colleagues, concern about its scope this season. In the following installments I will explain the ABCs and, if I may, the D of dengue.

1. Aedes aegypti. This is the main name of the mosquito that transmits dengue. You may soon find a picture in the blog where you may observe its white and black legs, one of its main features. While it transmits the dengue, it does not originate the disease.  Dengue is a diseased produced by the dengue virus (DV), described as having four subtypes which cause, to our knowledge, the same type of disease. The only variable we have observed is that when a person who has previously had dengue caused by one of the viruses (say, DV type 1), when infected with a different type (for instance, DV type 4), that person is more susceptible to hemorrhagic dengue: We will speak of it later.

In general, viruses are microscopic organisms usually formed of primary chains of genetic material that do not have a cellular structure of their own. I do not intend to give a class on biology, but only want to emphasize these are microorganisms that depend on a host (in this case, the mosquito and the human being) in order to reproduce and fulfill their life cycle. On the particular case of DV, this is an ongoing cycle from man to mosquito and vice versa. Outside one of its hosts, the virus is very fragile.

We could summarize the virus’ life cycle as follows: from an infected man. The man has the virus circulating in the blood, the mosquito bites and draws the virus from the ingested blood. The virus reproduces and multiplies inside the mosquito; copies of the virus are placed in the “eggs” of future mosquito larvae. Thus, the mosquito lays the eggs (which contain genetic material of the virus) in a water container. The egg hatches and in just a few days, the larval stage begins within the water container. The larva settles on the surface of the water forming a cocoon, from where it emerges as a developed mosquito. We need to remember that this mosquito holds the genetic contents of the virus from the moment it was deposited in the form of an egg and once in the mosquito stage, the material rests in its “salivary” glands. When a human is bitten, this mosquito “saliva” slips anticoagulant and antihistamine into the skin, thus the infected mosquito transmits the virus.

El ABCD del dengue. Serie en 4 partes escrita

 Si bien atrasadas pero llegaron.  Después de un mayo muy seco en Cozumel llegó la temporada de lluvia a mitad de junio y bastaron un par de días de chubascos para que diera inicio formalmente la temporada de dengue; al cabo de cinco días la cuenta era inequívoca: cinco casos de dengue, cuatro de ellos hemorrágicos.  No es alarma, pero pese a que todos los años se presenta, todos los años parecemos olvidarlo; por ello uno de los motivos para escribir sobre el dengue.  Un segundo motivo obedece a los comentarios en los pasillos, en las reuniones y en la mesa que por un lado denotan amnesia o ignorancia sobre la vigilancia y prevención o bien, entre colegas, preocupación por el alcance de esta temporada.  En las siguientes entregas entonces les explicare el ABC y, si me permiten, D del dengue.
A.      Aedes aegypti. Este es el nombre del principal mosco que transmite el dengue, podrán encontrar pronto una foto en el blog en la que podrán observar sus patas color blanco y negro, una de sus principales características.  Si bien es el transmisor, no es el que origina la enfermedad.  El dengue es una enfermedad producida por el llamado Dengue virus (DV), de él se han descrito cuatro subtipos los cuales causan, hasta donde sabemos, el mismo tipo de enfermedad.  La única variable que hemos observado es que, cuando una persona que ya ha tenido dengue causada por uno de los virus (digamos el DV tipo 1), al ser infectado con un tipo diferente (digamos el DV tipo 4) tiene más probabilidad de hacer un cuadro de dengue hemorrágico. De éste hablaremos más adelante.

Los virus en general son organismos microscópicos, usualmente compuestos de primarias cadenas de material genético, que no poseen una estructura celular en sí. No haré una clase de biología solamente quiero destacar que se trata de microorganismos que dependen de un huésped (en este caso el mosco y el humano) para poder reproducirse y cumplir su ciclo vital.  En el caso del DV este ciclo se cumple de hombre a mosco y viceversa de forma constante;  el virus en sí fuera de alguno de sus huéspedes es muy frágil.

Podríamos resumir el ciclo de vida del virus de la siguiente forma: a partir de un hombre infectado.  El hombre infectado posee el virus circulando en su sangre, el mosco pica y extrae el virus con la sangre ingerida. Dentro del mosco el virus se reproduce y multiplica ubicando las copias del virus en los "huevos" de las futuras larvas del mosco. Así, el mosco deposita los huevos (que contienen el material genético del virus) en un depósito de agua. El huevo eclosiona e inicia el estado larvario dentro del depósito de agua al cabo de unos días. La larva se fija a la superficie del agua y forma un capullo del que posteriormente emerge en forma de mosco desarrollado.  Recordemos que este mosco tiene el contenido genético del virus desde que fue depositado en forma de huevo, en la etapa de mosco, el material se deposita en las glándulas "salivales" del mosco.  Esta "saliva" del mosco introduce anticoagulante y antihistamínico a la piel cuando pica al humano, el mosco infectado por ende transmite el virus al hombre al picarlo.

La Cuisine Detox - Last week we had  a group of people who particiapted in the Spring Detox at La Cuisine.  The program started with a discussion where all the beneifts of a purative diet were explained, including cleansing the liver, flushing out body fat and increased energy.   The diet is based on fresh foods like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, herbal teas,   and super foods.  All of the food, teas and snacks are prepared in La Cuisine.  The program ended last week with a yoga class at Hotel B.  All of the participants were very satisfied with the results, and reported positive changes and better overall health.  At the end of the week, several people expressed interest in repeating the program, so we’ve decided to offer a second week and to begin to offer a Cleansing/Detox diet program monthly.  For more information, contact La Cuisine through facebook.

Eventos Proximos y Permanentes

Detox con La Cuisine - La Semana pasada tuvimos un grupo de personas que se anotaron al Detox-Primavera de la Cuisine, el programa inicio con  una platica donde se explicaron todos los beneficios de una dieta depurativa  como limpieza hepática, perdida de grasa corporal y ganancia de energía.  La dieta se baso alimentos frescos como  frutas, verduras, granos enteros,  tès herbales y superalimentos.  Todas las comidas y snacks se prepararon en la Cuisine.
