Cozumel Police Save Child from Drowning

Congratulations to Cozumel police officers Miguel Ángel Zetina Palma and José Eduardo Poot Pech who saved a 15 year old boy from drowning.  Last Sunday, officers received a 066 emergency call that someone was drowing at the public beach, Caletita.  When officers arrived, they performed CPR, until a Cruz Roja ambulance arrived to transport the youth to the Centro de Salud.  This is the second life that Cozumel Police have saved in the past two weeks from drowning, since they also rescued a 5 year old boy who fell into a drainage ditch. 

Felicidades a los  policías de Cozumel Miguel Ángel Zetina Palma y José Eduardo Poot Pech quienes salvaron la vida a un muchacho de 15 años que estuvo a punto de  de ahogarse.  El domingo pasado, los oficiales recibieron una llamada de emergencia 066 que alguien se estaba ahogando en la playa pública la Caletita.  Cuando los policías llegaron, dieron el RCP, hasta que una ambulancia del Cruz Roja  transporto al joven al  Centro de Salud.  Esta es la segunda vida que policía de Cozumel han salvado en las últimas dos semanas, hace 15 días ellos también rescataron a un muchacho de 5 años que cayó en una zanja de drenaje.

Humane Society Story of the Week - The Story of the Dump - Part I by Monica Velasco

This is a story so touching; a character so unlikely to be found admirable and an environment so improbable to be the setting where such a sweet bond developed. Anastasio May, better known as “El Gabacho”, has lived twenty of his 48 years at the municipal garbage dump, in a little cardboard room surrounded by piles of garbage, pungent bad smell, hundreds of black vultures and tons of flies. He and two other men arrived there two decades ago hired by a private company to separate metal and other recyclables. The job didn´t last very long, but they stayed there, in a way abandoned by that company. All these years they have made a living from picking and selling aluminum waste and other metals. All these years, they have consumed cheap alcohol quite heavily. 

Living there, they have witnessed countless times how abandoned, starved and fearful dogs come around the garbage piles looking for food. The garbage dump has always been an easy “option” for those who wish to discard their unwanted pets. Some just leave them and drive away, and some tie them up to make sure they will not follow them back home. Gabacho and friends tried to help many of these dogs, and they have also seen a lot of them die. During the last 6 or 7 years, we have visited the garbage dump every year or two, and rescued a few puppies that we could catch. Every time it was heartbreaking. Usually there would be a dozen or more dogs staying close to the cardboard house where the three men Gabacho, Don Pato and Coco Loco resided, but these too were generally in pitiful conditions. Dogs dumped there don´t live very long, but they are quickly replaced by newly abandoned ones so there is always a large amount of them.  Those who survive do so by dominating an area of the dump, probably stealing poultry from ranches in the vicinity, and also hunting wild animals.

Last year, when we went there with members of IFAW, we found a much different situation for those animals closer to Gabacho and friends. They were not looking bad, really, relative to what we had seen before. We don´t know what allowed or inspired them to have this improvement; it may be that suddenly there was more food available, or maybe the fact that Gabacho was staying mostly sober.  Whatever it was, most of these 15 dogs and 9 cats were in fairly good shape. We wanted to spay/neuter, vaccinate and de-worm them, and treat what was treatable. We did euthanize one male dog with horribly advanced transmissible venereal tumors. Having returned without him did not please them at all.  After much explaining and showing them photos of the tumors, Gabacho understood we put the dog down to help him avoid a long painful death. After all, he had seen many more die slowly before. But what he deeply regretted was not having been able to bury him, right there where he had buried all those others that had touched their lives. It was then that we realized how deeply they cared for their dog companions.

During the last 10 months, we have visited them about once a month and rescued the new arrival puppies before they got mangy beyond help. In the beginning, we asked them if they would let us find a home for Cirquera, a very small, Maltese type dog, who was actually quite sick with erlichiosis. Suggesting that she might be more fragile than the rest, we planted the idea of a new home for her, and Don Pato, the older guy, quietly said that if it was better for her he would think about it. When we returned Cirquera 3 weeks later and saw how happy she was to be home with Don Pato, and we watched this man´s face filled with pure joy when we handed her back to him, we realized that Cirquera was exactly where she was happiest. Found at ease there, she resumed her old habit of catching flies.

Esta es una historia conmovedora, un personaje que pareciera poco probable de encontrarsele admirable, y en un lugar donde dificilmente se imagina el desarrollo de una relación tan dulce. Anastasio May, conocido como “El Gabacho”, ha vivido veinte de sus 48 años de edad en el basurero municipal. En un cuartito de carton, rodeado de montañas de basura, humo, mal olor, cientos de zopilotes y millones de moscas. El y otros dos hombres llegaron ahí hace dos décadas contratados por una compañía que los llevó a separar metales de desecho. La chamba no duró mucho, pero ellos quedaron ahí, de alguna forma abandonados. Todos estos años han vivido de pepenar metales y venderlos. Y todos estos años han consumido alcohol barato en copiosas cantidades.

Viviendo ahí, han sido visto llegar sinúmero de perros abandonados en el basurero, que medio muertos de miedo y hambre se acercan a la basura buscando que comer. El basurero ha sido desde siempre una “opción” fácil para los que quieren deshacerse de sus mascotas. Algunos solo los dejan, y otros los amarran a algo o les amarran las patas para asegurarse de que no los seguirán de regreso a casa. Gabacho y sus compañeros ayudaron a muchos, y también vieron morir a muchos otros.  Durante los últimos 6 o 7 años, hemos checado la situación de los perros del basurero de vez en cuando, y rescatado a algunos cachorros que pudimos atrapar.  Cada vez era un escenario espantoso y deprimente. Generalmente había una docena o más de perros más allegados a estas 3 personas: Gabacho, Don Pato y Coco Loco, pero aún estos esaban en condiciones verdaderamente lastimeras. Los perros abandonados ahí no viven mucho tiempo, pero siempre son reemplazados por nuevos perros abandonados, y entonces se mantiene un número alto de perros en el lugar. Los que sobreviven lo hacen pudiendo dominar un area del basurero, probablemente robando gallinas de rancherías cercanas y también cazando fauna Silvestre.

El año pasado, cuando visitamos junto con personas de la IFAW, nos encontramos con que la   situación de los perros más allegados al Gabacho y compañeros era muy diferente. En realidad, no se veían nada mal, comparados con años anteriores. No sabemos que les ayudó, o inspiró a llegar a tal cambio; tal vez de repente había más comida, o el hecho de que el Gabacho estaba ya básicamente sobrio. El hecho es que la mayoría de esos perros, y ahora hasta gatos, estaban mucho mejor. Ofrecimos esterilizar, vacunar, desparasitar y medicar a quienes lo necesitaran. A uno de los machos lo llevamos y decidimos dormirlo ya que tenía tumores venéreos ya muy avanzados. Cuando regresamos sin él, no les pareció nada bien. Después de mucho explicar mostrando fotos de cómo estaba el pobre perro, Gabacho comprendió que lo ayudamos a bien morir, sin dolor. Después de todo, él había visto morir a tantos.  Pero lo que lamentó mucho fue el no haber podido enterrarlo. Ahí donde yacen tantos que han pasado por sus vidas. Fue entonces que nos dimos cuenta de qué tan importantes son para ellos sus perros compañeros.

Durante los últimos 10 meses, los hemos visitado y recogido a los cachorros llegados, antes de que se dañen demasiado. La primera vez, les preguntamos si considerarían dejar que le buscaramos hogar a la Cirquera, una perrita pequeña, entre Maltés y Yorky, que de hecho estaba enferma de erliquiosis. Don Pato, el más viejo, dijo que lo pensaría. Cuando regresamos a la Cirquera 3 semanas después, ya curada, y vimos lo felíz que se puso al estar de regreso, y además vimos la cara de Don Pato iluminarse con tal alegría de ver llegar a su chaparrita, supimos que ese era precisamente el lugar donde esta perrita era felíz.  Ya reinstalada en su territorio, se dedicó a su antiguo pasatiempo de cazar moscas.

That same time Gabacho told us that La Burra (not a donkey but a stubborn dog) had had puppies. We went with him to where she had her den. Obviously she found her own spot, but Gabacho had helped by clearing the broken glass around it, putting a blanket on the floor and a bowl with clean water  for her close by. When she saw us approaching, she growled at us quite menacingly, but when Gabacho touched her she was totally comfortable. He held her and her babies very gently and lovingly, and she seemed to be smiling.

It would have been hard to imagine that we would have ever wanted those dogs to continue to live there, had it not been for the sincere affection that we witnessed between all of them. These men have a deep connection, a healthy bond with their dogs that would be desirable in people who purchase expensive breeds and live with a lot more comfort. They watch them, enjoy them and share their lives, shade, water, food and space with them.

But now they have to part ways. In a positive effort to deal with the garbage situation, the City has given the concession of the garbage processing to a private company. There will be no pickings, no people living there, and of course, no dogs. Don Pato died of a stroke a couple of months ago, and the remaining two will have to leave the site in just a few days. At a time when he is about to lose a place to live and a way to make a living, Gabacho´s biggest concern is the dogs and cats. He wakes up in the middle of the night thinking about it.

Up until now, their future is very uncertain. Yesterday we learned that the new company could possibly hire them, which would be great but nothing is settled. We want to make their story known because we have watched them and developed appreciation for them. Through the way they care about those dogs, their sweet nature was made visible. We feel for them because they will lose their friends and we are concerned about how they will live. Tomorrow we will take their dogs and cats out of there and bring them to the shelter. We will try our best to work on making them adoptable. They are so adapted to a life in a pack and living in the open, that they will require a lot of help. They will miss their people and their ways and their freedom.

Esa misma vez, el Gabacho nos dijo que La Burra (una perra no muy entendida pero muy querida) había tenido cachorros. Nos había faltado operar. Fuimos con él a ver su madriguera. Obviamente ella había elegido su espacio, pero Gabacho le había ayudado quitando los vidrios rotos de alrededor, poniendo una cobija, y dejándole un tazón con agua limpia. Cuando la Burra nos vio acercarnos, gruñó amenazante. Pero cuando la tocó el Gabacho se sintió completamente cómoda y confiada. El la sostuvo a ella y a uno de sus cachorritos con cariño y cuidado, y ella parecía estar sonriendo.

Dificilmente hubieramos imaginado el haber deseado que estos perros permanecieran ahí, si no hubiera sido por el sincero afecto que claramente apreciamos entre ellos. Estos hombres tienen una profunda conección con sus perros, un vínculo sano que ya quisieramos ver en tantos dueños de perros y gatos. Ellos los admiran, disfrutan, y comparten con ellos sus vidas, su sombra, su agua, alimento y espacio.
Pero ahora se tienen que separar. En un esfuerzo positivo por mejorar la situación de los desechos, el municipio concesionó el procesamiento de la basura a una empresa privada. NO habrá pepena, ni gente viviendo ahí, y mucho menos perros. Don Pato murió de una embolia hace un par de meses, y los dos restantes deberán desocupar el área en unos 3 días. En un momento en el que va a perder no solo el poco envidiable lugar que habita, sino también la manera de buscar su sustento, la mayor angustia del Gabacho es lo que pueda pasar con sus perros.  Se despierta en la noche con esa preocupación.
Hasta ahora, su futuro es muy incierto. Ayer nos enteramos que la nueva empresa podría ofrecerles empleo, lo cual sería muy bueno. Sin embargo no hay nada establecido aún.

Queremos divulgar su historia porque los apreciamos. A través de lo que hacen por los perros, se reveló la parte dulce de estos hombres. Nos duele que van a perder a sus  amigos, y nos preocupa cómo van a vivir.
Hoy iremos a buscar a sus perros y gatos para llevarlos al refugio. Haremos lo major posible para hacerlos adoptables. Están tan adaptados a su vida en manada y a vivir a cielo abierto, que requerirán bastante ayuda. Extrañarán a sus personas y su libertad.

"Earth & Rain" Pictorial Expo Opens this Saturday at Hotel Flamingo AQUA Bar & Cultural Center

This Saturday the Hotel Flamingo/ Aqua Bar is opening a brand-new pictorial exposition entitled “Earth & Rain” which features three local artists: Adriana Delfin, Judith Martinez,  and Antonio Carcamo.   To celebrate this event, they’re having live music from “Ojo del Eco,” the impro jazz band.  There will also be drinks specials and complimentary appetizers throughout the evening, starting at 7 pm. 

Chilam Balam Mayan Prophesy Books Available On-Line

With the end of the Mayan Calendar approaching in 2012, many people are turning their attention to the prophesies and the historic records of the ancient Maya.  The Chilam Balam books consist of nine manuscripts named after small Yucatec towns such as Chumayel, Mani, and Tizimin, and   contain history (both pre-Spanish and colonial), prophesies, and herbal medicine. Written in the Yucatec Maya language but in European script, the manuscripts stem from the 18th and 19th centuries.  Project Gutenberg has made the books of the Chiliam Balam available on line, in a downloadable e-book format.   The Books of Chilam Balam

Huitlacoche - Gourmet and Good for You

Huitalcoche is a fungus which grows naturally on ears of corn.  Known in the United States as corn smut, U.S. farmers have spent thousands of dollars trying to eradicate this infection from  their crops.  Here in Mexico huitlacoche is considered a delicacy and used in quesadillas, tamales and other specialty dishes, and is now becoming extremely popular in upscale Mexican restaurants in the United States, including Texas, New York and Los Angeles.  In fact, U.S. gourmet chefs often pay up to $40 USD a kilo to flavor their dishes.

Help Cuddles & Monkey Find a New Home –.  We are leaving the island and the planned home for this pair didn't work out, leaving us just over a week to find them a new home. The male (Monkey) is a year old and the female (Cuddles) is approximately nine months. Nos iremos de la isla y no podemos llevarlos con nosotros, estamos trabajando por encontrar un nuevo lugar  esta semana. El macho (Monkey) tiene un año de edad y la hembra (Cuddles) tiene aproximadamente  9 meses. Ambos están esterilizados, desparasitados y vacunados. Si los adoptan les entregaremos comida y arena especial para los primeros meses, juguetes, la caja para la arena, las cajas para transportarlos al veterinario y sus juguetes para que rasquen sus unas y sus  platos de agua y comida.
