Spring Break Round Up

As the statistics come in, they prove spring break has been a much needed boon to the Cozumel and Quintana Roo economy.  The Cozumel Hotel Association reports that overall occupancy rates for the busy week were a consistent 80%. 

Both passenger ferries reported 100% occupancy over weekend crossings, meanwhile, the car ferry, TransCaribe, reported that over the holiday weekend, more than 200 vehicles made the crossing between Calica and Cozumel during their “Auto Sardina” program, in which passengers rode free.  This program continues until April 12th.    Cozumel wasn’t the only area of Quintana Roo to have high occupancy.  The Cancun Airport reported that they hit their all-time record, performing 507 operations in one day.

Llegaron las  estadísticas, de la  semana santa/spring break  la cual ha sido una bendición muy necesaria para la economía de Cozumel y Quintana Roo.  La Asociación Hotelera de Cozumel informa que los  porcentajes  de ocupación de la semana fueron de un 80% promedio. 

Ambas compañías de los ferris de pasajeros informaron de un 100% de ocupación en sus cruces este fin de semana, mientras tanto, el transbordador  de coches, TransCaribe, informó que durante el fin de semana de vacaciones, más de 200 vehículos cruzaron entre Calica y Cozumel durante su programa de "Auto Sardina", en el que los pasajeros no pagan.  Este programa continúa hasta el 12 de abril.    Cozumel no fue la única área de Quintana Roo de  tener alta ocupación.  El aeropuerto de Cancún, informó que se rompió  su récord histórico, realizando 507 operaciones en un día.

Register Your Cell Phone with RENAUT

The deadline of April 10th to register your cell phone with RENAUT (Registro Nacional de Usarios de Telefonia Celular)  is rapidly approaching.  The RENAUT is a  national registry to aid in the investigation and persecution of crimes such as kidnapping and extortion, which often involve cell phones.  Registration is simple, easy and can be done on-line.  All you have to do is input your CURP at the following webpage,and then text the generated number to 2877, the call is free, and the confirmation takes moments.  For more information check out:   

Museo de la Isla de Cozumel Ready to Celebrate 23rd Anniversary

April 23rd marks the 23rd anniversary of the Museo de la Isla de Cozumel.  To mark the occasion the Museum is hosting many events throughout the month of April including the awards ceremony of two contests, the painting contest “Maravillas de la Naturaleza” and the literary contest “Memorias de Una Isla” on Thursday, April 8 starting at 8 pm.  Also several new exhibitions will be inaugurated. On Saturday, April 10th, starting at 8 pm, there will be a free opera concert, featuring Laura Chuc, entitled “100 years of Mexican Song” You can find April’s schedule of events on the left side margin of this week’s Cozumel 4 You.

Our island’s museum covers so many different aspects of what makes Cozumel unique.  There are displays on our unique ecosystems, an exact copy of a traditional mayan home, and of course, art exhibitions, art classes, concerts and even a theatre.  The building the museum is housed in was inaugurated in 1936 and was originally one of the island’s most elegant hotels. 

El 23 De abril marca el 23 aniversario del Museo de la Isla de Cozumel.  Para marcar la ocasión el museo realiza muchos eventos durante todo este mes de abril, incluyendo la entrega de premios de dos concursos, el concurso de pintura "Maravillas de la Naturaleza" y el concurso literario "Memorias de Una Isla" el jueves, 8 de abril comenzando a las 8 pm.  También se inaugurará varias exposiciones nuevas. El sábado, 10 de abril, comenzando a las 8 pm, habrá un concierto gratis de ópera, con Laura Chuc, titulada "100 años de la canción mexicana" puede encontrar el calendario de abril de estos eventos buscando en el margen izquierdo de Cozumel 4 You esta semana.

El museo de nuestra isla cubre tantos aspectos diferentes de lo que hace único a Cozumel.  Hay una muestra de nuestros ecosistemas, una réplica exacta de una casa típica Maya,  clases de arte y por supuesto, exposiciones de arte, conciertos e incluso un teatro.  El edificio que se encuentra en el museo fue inaugurado en 1936 y fue uno de los más elegantes hoteles de la isla.

Humane Society Pets of the Week & Results of the Art Auction Announced

Today we feature a beautiful puppy, Gabachito, which we rescued from the garbage dump this morning. He was saved by “Gabacho”, (in the photo with him) one of the guys who lives there and who is a real angel for those dogs. You will hear his story soon, as he himself is in desperate need for help. Gabachito puppy was severely hurt yesterday when he was hit by a rock as a result of work being done in the area and it broke his arm in two places. He is now with us at the shelter and will require surgery, but we are confident we can make him better. Sweet sweet puppy, he will need a home soon. Please come and meet him!

Hoy les presentamos al Gabachito, un cachorro que recogimos del basurero esta mañana. Lo salvó “El Gabacho” (en la foto con él), uno de los hombres que viven en el basurero y que es un verdadero ángel para los perros que llegan ahí. Pronto escucharán su historia ya que ahora es él quien necesitará ayuda. Gabachito el cachorro quedó muy lastimado ayer, cuando durante los trabajos que se están haciendo ahí, una piedra le pegó tan duro que le rompió el bracito en dos puntos. Ahora está con nosotros y requerirá cirugía, pero tenemos confianza de que lo podemos dejar bien. Lindo cachorrito que pronto necesitará un hogar. ¡Venganlo a conocer!

This beauty is another dump animal. This one here is relaxing in the area which would be considered the “living room” for these guys. Gabacho and friends do such a great job at giving them the best possible food and lots of love, in about the worst conditions imaginable. Certainly not a fancy place, but the cat is happy. Very soon we will have to rescue 11 dogs and 6 cats from there. They have already been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and of course they will be dewormed again. Esta belleza es otro animal del basurero. Aquí lo vemos descanzando en lo que sería la “sala” para estas personas. Gabacho y sus compañeros les dan lo mejor que pueden a estos animales, y en condiciones de vivienda dificiles de imaginar. Y como ven este gato se ve felíz. Desafortunadamente,  pronto tendrémos que rescatarlo a él y a otros 6 gatos más 11 perros del lugar. Todos han sido ya vacunados y esterilizados, y por supuesto serán desparasitados nuevamente. Si buscabas una mascota con inmunidad  superior, este es tu gato! Thanks to everyone who attended the Annual Art Auction to benefit our local Humane Society last March 26th. Se recaudó un total de $33,902 pesos para ayudar a los animales!  Gracias muy especiales a Greg Dietrich for por coordinar y cantar la subasta,  a Cindy por organizar minuciosamente, a Dave por tocar musica, y a Moris y Volkan de Gallery Istanbul por invitarnos nuevamente y ser tan amables anfitriones.

Yoga Happy Hour Next Week - Friday April 16th - Tiki Tok

Join island residents and Cozumel 4 You for a different sort of Happy Hour on Friday April 16th. Starting at 6pm,Tammy Cervantes and the staff of Power Yoga Cozumel will be on hand at Tiki Tok Restaurant Bar, right on the waterfront. There will be a very brief discussion of yoga, it’s physical and mental benefits and even a very short introductory class free of charge!  All you’ll need to bring are comfortable clothes that you can move in!  Mind and body recharged, Tiki Tok will then offer 2 x 1 drink specials on both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from 8 – 10 p.m, with live music starting at 10 pm.. Gasoline Prices Rise in April

Consumers saw gas prices rise again the first Saturday in April.  Magna is now 8.12 pesos per liter and Premium is 9.78 pesos per liter.  This is part of a new program by the Mexican Ministry of Finance to monthly adjust prices depending upon economic gains or losses the previous month.  In 2009, overall gas prices went up less than 2%. 

Consumidores vieron que  los precios del gasolina aumentaron de precio  el primer sábado de abril.  Ahora la gasolina Magna vale $ 8.12 pesos por litro y la Premium $ 9.78 pesos por litro.  Esto es parte de un nuevo programa por la Secretaría de Hacienda para ajustar mensualmente los precios según las pérdidas o ganancias económicas del mes anterior.  En 2009, los precios de gasolina subieron  menos del 2%. 

Mayan Elders Question Elton John Show at Chichen Itza

Sir Elton John performed amidst the pyramids of Chichen Itza last weekend, to a sold out crowd, however many people are wondering if commercial ventures, such as concerts, should take place in a archeological treasure. Local Mayan leaders are expressing dismay over the lack of respect for their cultural heritage, and citing an accident, in which a stage collapsed during set up, injuring 3 mayan workers, as proof that the “Aluxes” (or spirits) are angered at using their sacred areas as a commercial venture. Priests from the "Mayao'b" religious group, commented that rites for permission to hold the concert were not conducted and mayan gods resent their sacred area used for profit seeking events. 

Archeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), are also in agreement, in fact, not only did they publish a formal protest, but they are also claiming that the administrator, El Patronato Cultur, exceeded the maximum capacity of 8,000 attendees by over 1,350.  Allegations also include that people under the influence of alcohol were admitted and that supervision in order to protect the archeological treasure wasn’t sufficient, causing possible damage.  In spite of all this, plans are already underway for next year’s concert, Paul McCartney.

Sir Elton John realizo un concierto en las pirámides de Chichen Itza el fin de semana pasado, sobre vendido, sin embargo, muchas personas se preguntan si estas aventuras comerciales,  como estos conciertos, deben tener lugar en un tesoro arqueológico. Dirigentes mayas locales están expresando consternación por la falta de respeto por su patrimonio cultural y citando un accidente, en el que una etapa se derrumbó durante la preparación, hiriendo a 3 trabajadores Mayas, como prueba de que los "Aluxes" (o espíritus) se enojaron en el uso de sus zonas sagradas como una empresa comercial. Los sacerdotes del grupo religioso "Mayao'b", comentó que no se llevaron a cabo ritos para el permiso para celebrar el concierto y los dioses Maya resienten su zona sagrada que se utiliza con fines de lucro para estos eventos. 

Los arqueólogos del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e historia (INAH), también están de acuerdo, de hecho, no sólo publican una protesta formal, sino también reclamar que el administrador, El Patronato Cultur, excedió la capacidad máxima de 8.000 asistentes con  más de 1.350 extras.  Las acusaciones también incluyen a personas bajo la influencia del alcohol las cuales fueron admitidas y causando posibles daños, necesitando mas supervisión, con el fin de proteger los tesoros arqueológicos.  A pesar de todo esto, los  planes ya están en marcha para el concierto de Paul McCartney el próximo año,

Soriana Round Up - The next time you’re grocery shopping at Soriana Supermarket, and the cashier asks you if you’d like to round up your purchase, say yes, and you’ll be directly helping the Cozumel Cruz Roja.    All round up proceeds from Soriana Cozumel from April 1st – May 31st, will go directly to the Cozumel Cruz Roja.  Soriana is located on 30 Av with Calle 8.  The event coincides with the National Fundraising Drive. 

La próxima vez que estes comprando en el Supermercado Soriana y la cajera le pide que si le gustaría redondear  su compra, diga sí, usted  va a ayudar directamente a la Cruz Roja de Cozumel.    Todos los redondeos  que se junte procedentes de Soriana Cozumel desde el 1ero de abril– al 31 de mayo, irá directamente a la Cruz Roja de Cozumel.  Soriana se encuentra en la Avenida 30 con Calle 8. 

“Mucho Que Dar” New TV Show  - Liliana Macotela, who brought the fantastic Lila Downs in concert to Cozumel, has started a new television show called, “Mucho Que Dar”  which shows on Canal 5 (which is Channel 25 if you have Cablemas) Tuesdays at 6 pm, with a repition on Sunday at 5 pm.  The theme of Liliana’s new venture is to highlight the different programs and organizations that help our Cozumel community.   

Liliana Macotela, que trajo la fantástica Lila Downs en concierto a Cozumel, ha comenzado un nuevo programa de televisión llamado, “Mucho Que Dar” que aparece en el canal 5 (cuál es el canal 25 si usted tiene Cablemas) el martes a las  6 de la tarde, con una repeticion el domingo a las 5 pm. El tema del nuevo programa de Liliana es destacar los diversos programas y organizaciones que ayudan a nuestra comunidad de Cozumel.

Adam Withington  2nd in Mexico – Last week it was erroneously reported in Cozumel 4 You, that Cozumel native, Adam Withington was second place in the world for kitesurfing, when he is, in fact, second in Mexico.  While we most certainly hope that one day, Adam will be first on the world, we apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

La semana pasada fue un error de Cozumel 4 You al escribir, que Adam Withington, nativo de Cozumel, es el segundo lugar en el mundo de kitesurf, él es, de hecqho, el segundo lugar en México. Esperamos que un día, Adam sea el primero en el mundo, pedimos disculpas por cualquier confusión.
