Cozumel Ironman Competitions Have Record Breaking Numbers

According to recent reports, the State Secretary of Tourism has recently announced that this year’s editions of the Ironman 70.3 and Ironman Cozumel 2013,  have already surpassed previous year’s number of registrants.  During a recent visit to Cozumel, officials from the Tourism department revealed the higher preliminary figures, which obviously, will be an economic boon to the island’s economy. 

Last year’s Ironman 70.3, which is oftentimes referred to as the “half-Ironman,” had 2,043 competitors, while the official Ford Ironman Cozumel 2012, had nearly 2,800 athletes.   Ironman 70.3 will take place on September 22nd, while the official Ford Cozumel Ironman is slated for December 1, 2013.

Las competencias de Ironman en Cozumel con cifras que rompen el récord

La Secretaría de Turismo del Estado recientemente dio a conocer el reporte de las inscripciones para las ediciones de este año Ironman 70.3 y Ironman Cozumel 2013, que ya han superado las cifras de participantes. Durante una visita reciente a Cozumel, funcionarios de la Dirección de Turismo revelaron las cifras preliminares más altas, lo que a todas luces dará un gran impulso a la economía de la Isla.

El Ironman 70.3 del año pasado, al cual a menudo se le refiere como “medio-Ironman”, contó con 2,043 competidores, en tanto que en el Ford Ironman Cozumel 2012 oficial, participaron cerca de 2,800 atletas. Ironman 70.3 se llevará a cabo el 22 de septiembre, y el Ford Ironman Cozumel oficial está programado para el 1º de diciembre, 2013.

Interjet Airplanes from Mexico City Arriving at Full Capacity

Interjet, one of Mexico’s up-and-coming national airlines is reporting that flights from Mexico City are arriving at 100% capacity, in spite of an increase in flights to accomodate summer holidays.  In July the airline added an additional 2 flights a week, for a total of 6, which will continue until mid-August.   The airline will once again reinstate the additional flights in September, for Ironman 70.3 and December both for the Ford Ironman as well as the Christmas holidays.

 Interjet, una de las aerolíneas mexicanas emergentes más prometedoras, informa que los vuelos procedentes de la Ciudad de México están arribando a Cozumel al 100% de su capacidad, no obstante el aumento en los vuelos para brindar el servicio durante las vacaciones de verano. Durante el mes de julio, la aerolínea añadió 2 vuelos a la semana, haciendo un total de 6, que continuarán hasta mediados del mes de agosto. La aerolínea restablecerá los vuelos adicionales en el mes de septiembre para Ironman 70.3 así como durante el mes de diciembre tanto para el Ford Ironman como la temporada navideña.

False Alarms to Cozumel Emergency Services on the Rise

City officials are reporting the number of prank calls and false alarms to the “066” emergency number has shown a significant increase in July.  According to the Director of the C-4 facility that handles Cozumel’s emergency calls, their department received 11,930 calls during the entire month.   36% of the calls received were considered either false or prank.

En aumento las falsas alarmas al Servicio de Emergencias en Cozumel

Las autoridades municipales reportan que el número de llamadas de broma y falsas alarmas al número de emergencias “066” han aumentado de modo significativo durante el mes de julio. Según el Director del C-4 que se encarga de las llamadas de emergencias en Cozumel, la dependencia ha recibido 11,930 llamadas durante todo el mes.  De las llamadas que se recibieron, 36% de estas se consideraron como falsas o de broma.

 Please Help Cozumel Dog Pirata Win the Arizona Foothills Magazine “Dog Days of Summer Photo Contest.” When Melanie and Brad Hoffman of Phoenix AZ rescued and adopted Pirata from the streets of Cozumel, she knew she was beautiful on the inside.  Pirata was hobbled by a harness several sizes too small for her, severely underweight and infected by several parasites including heartworm.  However, thanks to loving care, good food and a wonderful new home with Melanie,  Pirata’s beauty really shines.

Por favor, ayuden que Pirata, el perro cozumeleño gane el “Dog Days of Summer Photo Contest” (“Concurso de fotografía días de perro durante el verano”)  de la revista  Arizona Foothills. Cuando Melanie y Brad Hoffman de Phoenix rescató de las calles de Cozumel y adoptó a Pirata, sabía de su belleza interior. Pirata estaba atada con un arnés demasiado pequeño para ella, sumamente baja de peso e padecía de infección causada por diversos parásitos, incluyendo el gusano del corazón. Sin embargo, gracias a los afectuosos cuidados, buena comida y un maravilloso hogar nuevo con Melanie, la belleza de Pirata realmente brilla.

De hecho, Pirata ha sido inscrita en el “Dog Days of Summer Photo Contest” de la revista  Arizona Foothills donde aparecen perros de toda el área, y ella es la única originaria de Cozumel. Si Pirata gana el concurso, Melanie está tan entusiasmada que ha prometido dar un donativo a la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel. Humane Society Pets of the Week

DOG: Star, beautiful medium sized female that is 2 years old and weights 9.4 kg. She was reported from the Iberostar Hotel. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for people to dump their dogs in this area, not the first dog we have had from Iberostar. Although they maintain a great Cat Cafe program, stray dogs are not part of the program. She was well fed by tourist and staff alike but she had to go and is now with us. Admission date April 28th, 2013

CAT: Tundra, beautifuk tortie, female 2 months old. She and her sibling Joey were brought in along with her black siblings and black mother. The mother and the black siblings went back to their area where they have a person feeding them, as a part of our T.N.R. program (Trap, Neuter, Release). To help out we took Tundra and Joey in hopes to have them adopted. Joey was adopted and Tundra is still waiting for her forever home, Adorable healthy kitten! Admission: May 22nd 2013

ADOPTEE OF THE WEEK: Petunia! After being mutilated (her ears are cut) and starved, the owners grew tired of her skin condition and dumped her at the Animal Control Center without caring she could be put down. She was transferred to the shelter, as she is a very good dog. She was diagnosed properly and treated. We were very careful finding a good home for her, and the whole family came to meet her at the shelter as a part of the adoption process. Thanks for being part of the solution.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

PERRA: Star, una hermosa hembra de tamaño mediano, con 2 años de edad y 9.4 kilos de pesos. Se recibió el reporte de parte del Hotel Iberostar. Desafortunadamente, no es raro que las personas se deshagan de sus perros en esta zona; no es el primer perro que hemos recibido del Iberostar. A pesar de que mantienen un gran programa, Cat Cafe, los perros callejeros no son parte del programa. Estaba bien alimentada tanto por los turistas como por el personal del hotel, pero era necesario que se fuera y ahora se encuentra con nosotros. Fecha de ingreso: 28 de abril, 2013.

GATA: Tundra, una bella tortie de 2 meses de edad. A ella y a su hermano Joey los trajeron junto con sus hermanos y su madre de color negro. La madre y los hermanos color negro regresaron a su zona, donde, como parte de nuestro programa T.N.R. (Atrapa, Esteriliza, Libera; TNR por su nombre en inglés) una persona los alimenta. Para brindar ayudar, recibimos a Tundra y a Joey con la esperanza de que fueran adoptados. Joey ya fue adoptado y Tundra aún está en espera de su hogar permanente. ¡Es una gatita sana, adorable! Fecha de ingreso: 22 de mayo, 2013.

ADOPTADO DE LA SEMANA: ¡Petunia! Después de haber sido mutilada (le cortaron las orejas) y de estar hambrienta, los dueños se cansaron del problema que ella padecía en la piel y la   abandonaron en el Centro de Control Animal sin importarles que pudiera ser sacrificada. Fue trasladada al albergue ya que es una perra muy buena. Se le diagnosticó y se le trató adecuadamente. Fuimos muy cuidadosos en encontrarle un buen hogar y, como parte del proceso de adopción, toda la familia vino a recibirla en el albergue. Gracias por ser parte de la solución.

How I Came To Call Cozumel Home, A Series by Island Residents

 It was the summer of 1996, I had just graduated high school, and I was arriving to Cozumel to spend the summer working with my uncle Adolfo in Guido’s (at that time still named Pizza Rolandi’s ).  That summer was a dream.  I spent my days working in the kitchen of Guido’s, peeling, chopping, cleaning and helping out in any way I could.  My afternoons were spent relaxing by the pool or ocean and my evenings dancing and partying through the old Carlos n’ Charlie’s.  That summer flew by like a flying fish. And from that moment on I had been injected with the Cozumel chip. 

Just about every vacation and school break there after  I found a way back to Cozumel to recapture those magical moments.  However, it was not until I graduated college that I was able to spend another extended period of time in Cozumel.  That was the summer of 2001, and it was during that two month stay, that I consciously made the decision that I wanted to live full time in paradise.  After a month of spanish school in Cuernavaca and 6 months at the French Culinary Institute, in New York City, I made my way back to Cozumel for good in February of 2002. 

After more than 5 years of working in Guido’s, I left those hallowed halls with enough experience and passion to open Kinta Mexican Bistro.  Kinta has been a dream come true and certainly the most difficult and fulfilling adventure of my life.   Whether i am in the kitchen creating new recipes or attending customers in the dining room, I truly love what I do.  Kinta has grown in many ways since that first December evening of 2007, and I could never thank Cozumel, its locals and visitors enough. 

In December of this year Kinta turns 6 and Kinta’s baby sister, Kondesa will turn 3.  Who knows what the future holds, but after 10 years on this beautiful island, Cozumel is still home, and still paradise for me.

Cómo se convirtió Cozumel en mi hogar. Una serie escrita por habitantes de la Isla

Era el verano del año 1996 cuando recién me gradué de la preparatoria, y llegué a Cozumel a pasar esa temporada para trabajar con mi tío Adolfo en el restaurante Guido’s (en ese entonces se llamaba Pizza Rolandi’s). Ese verano fue un sueño. Mis días transcurrieron trabajando en la cocina de Guido’s, pelando, cortando, limpiando y dispuesto a ayudar de cualquier manera posible. Las tardes las pasaba relajándome junto a la alberca o al mar, y por la noche, bailando y de fiesta en el viejo Carlos n’Charlie’s. Ese verano paso volando como un pez volador. Y a partir de ese momento, ya traía implantado el chip de Cozumel.

Desde entonces, cada receso y vacaciones escolares encontré el camino de regreso a Cozumel para revivir esos momentos mágicos. Sin embargo, no fue sino hasta que me gradué de la universidad que me fue posible pasar otro periodo más largo en Cozumel. Eso fue en el verano del año 2001, y  durante mi estancia de dos meses fue cuando de manera consciente tomé la decisión de vivir tiempo completo en el paraíso. Después de un mes aprendiendo español en Cuernavaca, seguido por 6 meses en el French Culinary Institute de la ciudad de Nueva York, en el mes de febrero del año 2002 regresé a Cozumel para quedarme. 

Tras más de 5 años trabajando en Guido’s, dejé esas venerada antesala con suficiente experiencia y pasión para abrir el restaurante Kinta Mexican Bistro. Kinta ha sido un sueño hecho realidad y ciertamente la aventura más difícil y plena de mi vida. Ya sea que me encuentre en la cocina creando nuevas recetas o atendiendo a los clientes en el área de comedor, en verdad amo lo que hago. Desde esta primera noche del mes de diciembre del año 2007, Kinta ha crecido en muchos aspectos y nunca podré agradecer lo suficiente a Cozumel, a sus habitantes y a los visitantes.

En diciembre de este año Kinta llega cumple 6 años y la hermana menor de Kinta, el restaurante Kondesa, cumplirá 3 años. Quién sabe lo que el futuro depara, pero después de 10 años en esta bella isla, Cozumel es mi hogar y, para mí, es el paraíso.
