Betty Swims the Cozumel Channel
Betty Arellanos Sandoval attempted to swim the channel from Akumal to Cozumel this past Saturday. “Betita,” who is only 13 years old, has been swimming all of her life, and was attempting to break her mother’s 1985 world record of 10 hours and 55 minutes, which her mother set when she was only 14. Betita started from Akumal at 4 am on Saturday, and swam for over 13 hours straight.
Due to a north wind, Betita faced 4 knot currents and waves over 2 meters face on for almost the entire duration of the swim. Betty was accompanied by her family, friends and sponsors, who all came together to support her during this amazing journey.
It was a difficult decision, however, her swim was suspended 4 miles from the island after 13 hours. It’s been estimated that due to the adverse conditions that Betty actually swam 70+ kilometers, vs. 45 for her mother’s crossing. “Betita,” quién tiene solamente 13 años, ha sido nadadora toda su vida, e intentaba romper el récord mundial de su madre quien llevo acabo en 1985 que fue de 10 horas y 55 minutos, que su madre lo realize solo teniendo solomente 14 años.
Betita empezó desde Akumal a las 4am del sábado, y nadó por más de 13 horas de travesiad. Debido a un viento del norte, Betita hizo frente a Corrientes de 4 nudos y a las olas de sobre 2 metros de cara casi la duración entera de la nadada. Su familia, amigos y patrocinadores acompañaron a Betty, que viniero para apoyarla durante este viaje asombroso.
Era una decisión difícil, sin embargo, su nadada fue suspendida 4 millas de la isla después de 13 horas. Se ha estimado que debido a las condiciones adversas que Betty nadó realmente los kilómetros 70+, contra 45 que llevo acabo su madre cuando ella lo realizo siendo esto un gran esfuezo. "Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel" Shoe Challenge
“Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel" which has been helping local children with school supplies and backpacks, is starting a new challenge. They are collecting new and gently used shoes for families in need. Their goal is 500 pairs of kids shoes from ages 1 year to 16 for boys and girls alike. They currently have around 100 pairs, and are intending to continue to collect them until 3 King’s Day when they will be distributed to needy families in the jungle. Starting next week, you’ll be seeing signs at various collection locations saying “Shoes for Kids” including Kelly's Sports Bar and Grill on 10 right by the town square.
This Saturday "Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel." are having a garage sale: August 15 from 9-12 at 50 bis entre 14 Y 16 just off of airport road. Proceeds from the sale go to "Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel" to pay for school supplies.
Aside from school supplies, "Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel," have various educational programs and activities throughout the year, including arts and crafts projects, preparing a collective dinner for their parents, and the 3 kings Shoes for Kids project . Volunteers educate the children not to litter and organize street clean-ups 3 or more times a year. After Wilma "Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel." cleaned up 250 bags of trash in 3 weeks. Many local businesses and professionals donate their time for this cause, for example Dra. Alejandra Nova Carus graciously donated her time to teach the childen good dental ahbits and teeth cleaning. “Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel" ha estado ayudando a niños locales con las gastos de la escuela y los mochilas, está comenzando un nuevo desafío. Estan colectando zapatos nuevos o usados para las familias en necesidad.
Su meta es colectar 500 pares de zapatos de edades 1 año a 16 para los muchachos y las muchachas igualmente. Tienen actualmente alrededor 100 pares, y llevarlo acabo hasta el Dia de los 3 reyes magos en donde se les distribuirán a las familias necesitadas en la selva. Comenzando la semana próxima, usted verá muestras en las varias localizaciones de la colección que dice los “zapatos para los cabritos” incluyendo Kelly' barra y parrilla de deportes en la derecha 10 por la plaza.
Este sábado; "Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel." están teniendo una venta de garage: 15 de agosto a partir de la 9-12 en el entre 14 Y 16 del bis 50 apenas terminando el camino del aeropuerto. Los ingresos de la venta van al " Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel" para pagar gastos de escuela. Aparte de gastos de escuela, " Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel, " tenga varios programas educativos y actividades a través del año, incluyendo artes y los proyectos manuales, preparando una cena colectiva para sus padres, y los 3 reyes zapatos para los ninos proyecto. Los voluntarios educan a los niños para no dejar en desorden y organizar las limpiezas 3 o más de la calle mide el tiempo de un año.
Después del " de Wilma; Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel." limpian 250 bolsas de basura en 3 semanas. Muchos negocios y profesionales locales donan su hora para esta causa, por ejemplo Dra. Cruise Ship News
The Spanish Company Pullmantur has announced it’s intention to create a homeport in Cozumel as early as March 2010. Pullmantur’s Vice President and operations manager announced last week, accompanied by Secretary of Tourism in the State, Sara Latife Ruiz Chávez
La compania de Espania, Pullmantur ha anunciado que es su intención crear un homeport en Cozumel apartir de marzo de 2010. El vice presidente de Pullmantur lo anunciaron la semana pasada, acompañado por la Secretaria del Turismo en el estado, Sara Latife Ruiz Chávez.
Last Friday, there were 4 cruise ships in port, including the Freedom of the Seas. Owned by RCCL, this is considered to be the largest cruise ship in the world,with a capacity for 4,000 passengers and 1,000 crew members.
El viernes pasado, había 4 cruceros en el puerto, incluyendo Freedom of the Seas de RCCL, éste se considera ser el barco de crucero más grande del mundo, con una capacidad para 4.000 pasajeros y 1.000 miembros de tripulacion.
 
Humane Society "Pets of the Week" - Citri & Sinbad
Citri, a beautiful 4 month old female puppy was rushed into our clinic 3 weeks ago. She fell from her owner's truck and her front leg was severely injured. All the nerves had been cut and the leg could not be saved. The owners were contacted and asked what they wished for the puppy. They stated they wanted everything done to save the puppy's life and to go ahead and amputate her leg. Our vets did a great job with the surgery. Unfortunately the owners chose to abandon her and did not come back for her. We are struggling with her wound staying closed, but she is getting better every day due to the diligent work of our veterinarians. Citri is up walking very well on her 3 legs. We need a super big miracle for our little Citri. 3 legged dogs make wonderful pets and always compensate well for the loss of a limb. She is an extremely loving puppy and she will heal that much faster in a loving home.
Sinbad s a two year old male cat. He is truly the king of the Humane Society. Sinbad has a ton of character and is often in our clinic pestering everybody with his antics. He is truly a favorite amongst the Humane Society staff and our cat volunteer Sheryl Shea. If anybody should choose to adopt Sinbad they will not be disappointed. He will be the most loyal, loving companion you could ever meet. We are still hoping our last two cats for pet of the week: Rosita and Loquita will be adopted. We desperately need homes for some of our adult cats. If you have room in your house and your heart, please consider adopting one of our adult cats that are ever so patiently waiting for a home.
Please consider trap/neuter/release of stray cats in your neighborhoods. We will lend you our traps, give you guidance and sterilize them for free. We need your help to stop the endless suffering for cats of Cozumel. The Humane Society just cannot support anymore at this time. Cachorrita de 4 meses de edad. Citri fue llevada de emergencia a nuestra clínica hace tres semanas. Se cayó de la camioneta de su dueño y su pierna fue severamente lastimada. Todos los nervios habían sido cortados, su extremidad no pudo ser salvada. Se contacto a los dueños y se les pregunto que querían que se le hiciera a la perrita; su opinión fue que se hiciera lo mejor para salvarla y que si era necesario se le amputara la pierna. Nuestros veterinarios hicieron un gran trabajo de cirugía. Desafortunadamente, los propietarios decidieron abandonarla y nunca regresaron por ella. Estamos luchando por mantener su herida cerrada y cada día, se pone mejor gracias al siempre diligente trabajo de nuestros veterinarios. Citri ya esta caminando muy bien sobre sus tres patas restantes. Necesitamos urgentemente un súper milagro para nuestra Citri. Los perros con tres patas llegan a convertirse en excelentes mascotas y más que compensan por la pérdida de una extremidad. Es una cachorrita extremadamente amorosa y se podría recuperar mucho mejor y mas rápido en un hogar en el que encuentre amor.
Simbad es un gato de dos años. Es el verdadero rey de la Sociedad Humanitaria. Simbad cuenta con una tonelada de carácter y siempre esta encima de todos los que trabajamos en la clínica haciendo sus visiones. Es el consentido del personal de la Sociedad Humanitaria y de nuestra voluntaria para gatos Sheryl Shea. Si alguien quisiera adoptar a Simbad todo el mundo estaría feliz. Será el más leal y amoroso compañero que se pueda conocer. Seguimos esperando que nuestras mascotas de la semana pasada, Rosita y Loquita sean adoptadas. Desesperadamente necesitamos hogares para algunos de nuestros gatos adultos. Si usted tiene espacio en su casa y en su corazón, por favor considere adoptar uno de nuestros gatos quines, siempre pacientes, están en espera de un nuevo hogar.
Por favor considere la opción atrapar/esterilizar/soltar para los gatos callejeros de su vecindario. Con gusto le prestaremos nuestras trampas, les daremos una guía y esterilizaremos a los gatos de forma gratuita. Necesitamos su ayuda para acabar con el sufrimiento innecesario de los gatos en Cozumel.
Lamentablemente, la Sociedad Humanitaria ya no puede brindar mas apoyo en este momento. Junior Lifeguards
Last week 50 children participated in a municipal sponsored Junior Lifeguard course. Junior Lifeguards are educated in basic lifesaving techniques, prevention of accidents and care of the environment. On Friday they received certificates of recognition from the undersecretary of the City council, Felipe the director of Civil defense, and the commander of the Cozumel Firemen.
50 niños participaron la semana pasada en un curso para menores patrocinado por los salvavidas municipales. Educan a los salvavidas menores en técnicas salvavidas básicas, la prevención de accidentes y el cuidado del ambiente. El viernes recibieron certificados de reconocimiento del subsecretario del Ayuntamiento, de Felipe el director de la defensa civil, y del comandante de los Bomberos de Cozumel.

The witch
The “doll charm” was made out of dirty rags and contained black dirt and minute pieces of human bones gathered in a pitch black night from the old Municipal graveyard of Cozumel; the coarse knots that formed it were tied with cat’s guts murdered in a hidden ceremony; the picture of the woman it was intended for was ripped from an ID of the victim which was stolen days before and it was crudely attached to the doll by rusty pins, stained with the blood of the witch.
The renegade angels and demons were convened at the densely populated colonia San Gervasio. The unforgiving and wandering soul of the scary Frenchman, Gilles de Rais, covered with his dark cape the dusty alleys. The bad and the evil were chanting monotonous “De Profundis”.
All of the aforementioned sorceries were performed with the aim of bringing the worst calamities to a lady neighbor. As soon as the intended victim saw the stinking charm lying in her doorstep, she dialed the emergency number for the public security centurions screaming with all her might: Help! Help me! The hordes of Lucifer are after me, they will defeat me! She almost swallowed the cell phone!
The good old Professor Dominguez Povedano went from Police Commissioner to High Priest and Judge of the Inquisition tribunal, he immediately ordered the criminal, guilty as charged, to be placed at the most humid, obscure of the dungeons in the “carcel municipal”, on a putrid bread and water diet, subject to alternated torments between the Iron Maiden and the Stretcher.
This amazing story happened in Cozumel, but not a hundred years ago, it happened last Tuesday; it is real and the municipal government will do good if they put out a decree such as the one by King Coloman, the “Book Lover”, who in the distant 1110´s, in Hungary, during the Árpad Dynasty, ruled: “De stringis vero quae non sunt, nula amplious quaestio fiat”. (As for witches, they really do not exist; no further investigations or trials are to be held.) How well ahead of his times will Juan Carlos Gonzalez look if he signed such a regal document: So ordered!… Juan Carlos… Rex.

La Bruja
El “fetiche” de trapo contenía tierra y pedazos minúsculos de huesos humanos recolectados en noche de luna del viejo panteón de Cozumel; los burdos nudos que lo conformaban fueron confeccionados con tripas de gato asesinado en ceremonia oculta; el retrato de la mujer a la que representaba fue recortado de su credencial de elector robada días antes y pegada al grotesco encantamiento mediante oxidados alfileres manchados con la sangre de la bruja.
Los Ángeles apostatas y demonios fueron convocados sobre la populosa colonia San Gervasio. El anima irredenta del tenebroso francés, Gilles de Rais, llenó de sombras las callejas polvorientas. Malos y maléficos entonaban impactantes “De Profundis”.
Todas las anteriores brujerías se realizaron para procurar el mal a una, no tan inocente, vecina. Ella, al ver el sucio fetiche tirado en la entrada de su choza, rauda y veloz, llamo a los centuriones de seguridad publica en su defensa “¡Auxilio! ¡Socorro! ¡Que las huestes del maligno me vencen, me derrotan!”. A punto estuvo de tragarse el teléfono celular.
El Profesor Domínguez Povedano, de Director de Policía paso a convertirse en gran oidor del Santo tribunal de la Inquisición, ordeno la detención inmediata de la bruja y su confinamiento en el mas recóndito de los húmedos calabozos de la Cárcel Municipal, a dieta de pan y agua y sometida a tormento alternativo entre la Dama de Hierro y el tristemente celebre Potro.
Todo esto ocurrió en Cozumel, pero no hace cientos de años, sino el martes pasado; bien haría el Cabildo municipal en emitir un resolutivo como aquel del rey Coloman, “El Amante de los Libros”, quien en los lejanos años 1110, en Hungría, durante la Dinastía Árpad promulgo: “De stringis vero quae non sunt, nuila amplius quaestio fiat”. (En cuanto a las brujas, en realidad no existen; no se investigaran ni enjuiciaran más). Que adelantado a su tiempo se vería Juan Carlos González rubricando el documento: ¡Cúmplase!… Juan Carlos… Rex.
