Ultimate Diver Challenge comes to Cozumel
The Ultimate Diver Challenge, billed the “biggest event in dive history” arrived here in Cozumel on August 1st, and continues on to August 8th. The opening ceremony took place on Saturday August 1st and was hosted by Evelyn Vaccaro, the actress.
The concept of the Ultimate Diver Challenge is for divers to have fun participating in events (or challenges) that evaluate their fundamental dive skills, such as buoyancy, navigation and search/stress/rescue skills, creating better scuba divers. Participants also have the opportunity to win trips, prizes and dive gear. In addition, there is also a silent auction, an educational activity day and a Discover Cozumel Race, in which participants follow a series of clues leading them to local businesses here in Cozumel.
This is the third year of the event, and is attended by over 60 divers. This is the culmination of several local US regional competitions, and is being filmed so you can view the webisodes on line at http://www.ultimatediverchallenge.com/index.html.
The Judges include Nicolas Coster, who has been in more than 35 feature films, Julie Riffe, who holds several world records on free-diving Spearfishing and Rudy Boesch, of the “Survivor” television show fame.
The event is being sponsored locally by a multitude of local businesses, such as Albatros Charters, Blue Xtsea Diving, Sand Dollar Sports, Cozumel Scuba Repair and Carlos and Charlies.
The Awards and closing ceremony will take place Friday, August 7th, at 7 pm at the Municipal Park. It’s open to the public, so please stop by and congratulate all the winners!
Ultimate Diver Challenge e Desafío, presentado como el “mayor evento en la historia del buceo” dio inicio en Cozumel el pasado 1o de Agosto y continuara hasta el Sábado 8. La ceremonia inaugural tuvo lugar el Sábado 1o y fue conducido por la conocida actriz Evelyn Vasccaro.
El concepto manejado por el Desafío Máximo al Mejor Buzo es que los buceadores se diviertan participando en eventos (o desafíos) que ponen a prueba sus habilidades en el buceo, tales como la flotabilidad, navegación y búsqueda, manejo de situaciones estresantes y rescate, con la idea de ayudar al desarrollo de mejores buceadores autónomos.
Los participantes tendrán también la oportunidad de ganar viajes, premios y equipo de buceo. Adicionalmente, se llevara a cabo una subasta silenciosa, un día de actividades educativas y una carrera para Descubrir Cozumel en la que los participantes deberán seguir una serie de “pistas” que los conducirán a negocios locales de Cozumel.
Este será el tercer año que se celebra el evento y en el participan mas de 60 buceadores. Constituye la culminación de numerosas competencias regionales en los Estados Unidos y será filmada para que puedan apreciarla en línea en http://www.ultimatediverchallenge.com/index.html.
Entre los jueces estarán Nicolás Coster, quien ha aparecido en más de 35 largometrajes, Julie Riffe, que detenta varios récords mundiales en buceo libre y pesca con arpón, además de Rudy Boesch, reconocido por su participación en el programa de televisión “Survivor”.

La premiación y ceremonia de clausura tendrán lugar el Viernes, 7 de Agosto, a las 7 de la noche en el Parque Municipal. Estará abierta al público así que por favor, dese una vuelta y ¡felicite a los ganadores!
  
CIEMA Wildlife Sanctuary Newsletter
The fourth issue of the CIEMA Wildlife Sanctuary has just come out, and is full of success stories on animal rescue and preservation, as well as happenings and progress at the Sanctuary itself.
For example, did you know that Cozumel is home to 27 animals that exist nowhere else in the world, including the pygmy raccoon, who is one of the most critically endangered animals in the world? CIEMA just recently rehabilitated and released a pygmy raccoon that was brought to them for treatment.
If you’re not on their mailing list, you can do so by contacting Cindy at CIEMA and can also assist them with fundraising activities, or by contributing in person or at Oasis Animal Hospital , or via PayPal on their website, http://www.ciemainternational.org/. The work is all done on a volunteer basis and all the monies raised go toward animal food, care, medication and habitation.
El cuarto número del Santuario de la Vida Salvaje CIEMA acaba de aparecer y esta repleto de historias de éxito en el rescate y la preservación de animales, así como eventos y avances en el propio Santuario.
Por ejemplo, ¿sabia usted que Cozumel alberga a 27 especies animales que no se encuentran en ningún otro lugar del mundo, entre estos el mapache pigmeo, uno de los animales mas críticamente amenazados del mundo? Recientemente, los investigadores de CIEMA rehabilitaron y regresaron a su ambiente natural a un mapache pigmeo que les habían llevado para tratamiento.

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Lalo & Loquita
Lalo is a sweet border collie mix. He 1 year 4 months old. Lalo was brought to the Humane Society when he was 3 months old. He has now been at the clinic for more than a year. He is a fun loving dog that loves to play, and play. It is time for Lalo to find his forever home. We are so sad for Lalo to have had to grow up at our shelter. He will make the most loyal, loving pal you could ever have.
Loquita has been at the Humane Society for a year and half. She is a 2 year old siamese. Brought to us in the Spring of 2008 with her babies, which were all adopted, however, Loquita remains behind. She is a very loving cat, and loves to swat at toys. Loquita is one of our many, many adult cats waiting for a home.
The Humane Society has more than 100 cats and we are desperately seeking homes for them. We hope somebody can open their heart for even just one of our adult cats.
Please consider trap/neuter/release of stray cats in your neighborhoods. We will lend you our traps, give you guidance and sterilize them for free. We need your help to stop the endless suffering for cats of Cozumel. The Humane Society just cannot support anymore at this time. Lalo es un collie fronterizo con sangre mezclada; tiene un año y cuatro meses de edad. Llevaron a Lalo a la Sociedad Humanitaria cuando tenia apenas tres meses de edad, Lleva en la clínica mas de un año. Es un perro que gusta de jugar y jugar. Ya es tiempo de que Lalo encuentre un hogar permanente. Nos da mucha tristeza que Lalo haya tenido que crecer en los confines del refugio. El será el amigo más leal y cariñoso, que pueda tener.
Loquita ha estado en la Sociedad Humanitaria por un año y medio. Es una gatita siamesa de dos años. Fue traída en la primavera del 2008 con sus bebes, todos ellos fueron adoptados, sin embargo, Lolita se quedo atrás. Es una gata muy amorosa y le encanta jugar con sus juguetes. Loquita es apenas una de nuestras muchas, muchas gatitas adultas que están en espera de encontrar un hogar.
La Sociedad Humanitaria tiene más de 100 gatos y esta desesperadamente buscando hogares para ellos. Esperamos que alguien abra su corazón para recibir aunque sea a uno de nuestros gatos adultos.
Por favor considere la opción atrapar/esterilizar/soltar para los gatos callejeros de su vecindario. Con gusto le prestaremos nuestras trampas, les daremos una guía y esterilizaremos a los gatos de forma gratuita. Necesitamos su ayuda para acabar con el sufrimiento innecesario de los gatos en Cozumel.

Vision Restored to those of Limited Means
The Cozumel General Hospital hosted special clinics on July 30th and 31st, designed for seniors of limited means to be evaluated by specialists from all over the country. Working together, they were able to operate and improve and even restore vision to 90 inhabitants of Cozumel. A previous clinic helped 25 people, bringing the total to 115 persons in Cozumel with corrected vision.
El hospital General de Cozumel llevo a cabo cinco clínicas durante los días 30 y 31 de Julio, dedicadas a los adultos mayores de recursos limitados que fueron atendidos por especialistas de todo el país. Trabajando en equipo, pudieron operar, mejorar y aun restaurar la vista de 90 habitantes de la isla. Una clínica previa ya había ayudado a 25 personas mas, elevando el total a 115 personas de Cozumel a las que se les ha corregido la vista.

Good Samaritans at Work & Continuing Events
One of our own Cozumel residents had a guest staying with her into town last week. The guest returned home only to discover that he had inadvertently left his camera in the back of a taxi. Apparently he was the driver’s last fare of the day, who then loaned the car to his wife, who, when she returned, informed him of the camera in the back. Our unsung hero returned the camera directly into the hands of it’s grateful owner same day. Our friend and the guest were so ecstatic to receive the camera back, they neglected to ask the driver his name or even get his taxi number. Thusly, our good Samaritan of the week is known only as the unsung taxi driver.
Uno de nuestros residentes Cozumeleños tuvo un huésped quedándose con ella la semana pasada. El huésped regreso a su casa nada más para descubrir que había, por equivocación, dejado su camera en el asiento trasero del taxi. Aparentemente él fue el último pasajero del taxista del día, quien luego presto el taxi a su esposa, quien de regreso informo a su esposo de la cámara en el asiento trasero. Nuestro héroe desconocido devolvió la camera directamente a las manos de su agradecido dueño el mismo día. Nuestra amiga y el huésped estaban tan emocionados de recibir la cámara que se olvidaron de pedir el nombre del taxista y así obtener su numero de taxi. Así, nuestro buen samaritano de la semana será nombrado simplemente como el taxista desconocido.
Hungarian Food and Jazz Festival, Saturday, August 8
The 4th annual Hungarian Food and Jazz Festival will be at Wet Wendy’s Margarita House, downtown in the main plaza Saturday evening, August 8. You should make your reservations in advance. If you are standing in the main square by the big clock tower with your back to the ocean, go to the left and about ¾ of the way down that block Wet Wendy’s Margarita House is on the left.
El Cuarto Festival de Jazz y Gastronomía Húngaras se celebrara en la Wet Wendys Margarita House, en el centro, en la plaza principal, la tarde del Sábado 8 de Agosto. “El Malecón”, the waterfront, on the way to the north (south) hotel zone, by the museum, right where the flag monument… we usually come up with a number of names when we want to give directions for someplace situated in this, the most important avenue of Cozumel.
We all know, deep inside, that it is called the Melgar something avenue, but, who was Rafael Eustacio Melgar?
To begin with, he wasn’t even a native of the island; actually he was born in Oaxaca in 1887, the son of Leopoldo Melgar and Dolores Andrade. He died, of all places, in Mexico City in March 1959, where he rest at the family mausoleum in the Spanish graveyard.
In Oaxaca, during the fateful days of the Mexican Revolution, he fought against the “pelones”, so called by his military style haircut, as opposed to the “greñudos”, the revolutionary troops who never had the time, the opportunity or the disposition to get a haircut; by his bravery in battle, he became a General.
As the times changed and the revolution became an “institution”, he became a “diputado” for the PNR, the direct precedent to the infamous PRI who nowadays is enjoying a come back with a vengeance, during his tenure as a diputado, he was the leader of the nationalist campaign.
He was also an Ambassador from Mexico in Holland and a Senator for his birth state from 1952 to 1958.
Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas, yes, the one who nationalized both oil and electricity, now both industries state monopolies, just take a look at your monthly billing from the CFE or stop by any PEMEX service station; named Mr. Melgar to be the governor of the Federal Territory of Quintana Roo, not yet a fully accepted state of the Mexican Republic in 1935.
His administration was marked first, by a change of attitude (meaning a little less corruption) and secondly, by his willingness to support and fund, numerous public works throughout the territory, among them, you’re not going to believe this, the island “Malecón” and the Museum.
Next time you’re asked to give directions, answer them Rafael E. Melgar Avenue… right by the Hard Rock Café…

El “Malecón”, la costera, camino a la zona hotelera norte o sur, ahí por el Museo, a la altura del monumento a la bandera… frecuentemente utilizamos numerosos nombres cuando queremos darle a alguien una dirección para algo que se encuentre en esta, la avenida más importante de Cozumel.
Todos sabemos, muy en el fondo, que se llama la Avenida Melgar… algo. Pero, ¿quien fue Rafael Eustacio Melgar en realidad?
Para empezar, ni siquiera fue un nativo de la isla; nació en el estado de Oaxaca en 1887, hijo de don Leopoldo Melgar y de Doña Dolores Andrade. Murió, de entre todos los lugares posibles, en la Ciudad de México en Marzo de 1959, sus restos descansan en el mausoleo familiar del panteón Español de esa ciudad.
En Oaxaca, durante los días aciagos de la Revolución Mexicana, peleo contra los “pelones”, así llamados por su corte de cabello militar, siendo lo opuesto de los “greñudos”, las tropas revolucionarias que nunca tenían durante las batallas ni el tiempo, ni la oportunidad ni el deseo de cortarse el pelo; por su coraje demostrado en combate, alcanzo el grado de General.
Al cambiar los tiempos y convertirse la revolución en una “institución”, como sea que eso se defina, se convirtió en “diputado” por el PNR, antecedente directo del nefasto PRI, el mismo que ahora disfruta de un regreso recargado; durante su periodo como diputado, encabezo la campaña nacionalista.
El General Melgar fue también Embajador de México en Holanda y Senador por su estado natal de 1952 a 1958.
El Presidente Lázaro Cárdenas, si, el mismo que nacionalizo tanto el petróleo como la electricidad, ambas industrias ahora monopolios estatales, para muestra tan solo échele un vistazo a su recibo mensual de la CFE o visite una estación de servicio PEMEX; nombro al diputado Melgar como Gobernador del Territorio Federal de Quintana Roo, ni siquiera un estado en pleno derecho todavía en 1935.
Su administración se destaco primero, por un cambio de actitudes (lo que quiere decir un poco menos de corrupción que no acabar con ella) y en segundo lugar por su marcado deseo de apoyar y asignar fondos para la realización de numerosas obras publicas a lo largo del territorio, entre ellas, no van a creer esto, el “Malecón” de la isla y el mismo Museo.
Así que ya lo saben, la próxima vez que alguien les pida indicaciones, respondan en la Avenida Rafael E. Melgar… por ahí por el Hard Rock Café.
