ScubaFest Cozumel: This Weekend December 12 - 15

Cozumel island will host the second annual Scuba Fest this weekend:  December 12-15.   Divers from around the world will converge on Cozumel to celebrate the beauty of our marine life, provide recognition for men and women defending our oceans and to dive the newly designated “Mayan Reef Road” of Cozumel.   Jean Michel Cousteau, son of the famous underwater explorer, Jacques Cousteau, will be on hand. Also running in conjunction with Scubafest will be “Taste of Cozumel,” featuring various restaurants, a local producers craft fair, as well as the “Cozumel Photo Shootout.”  For more details check out the  ScubaFest Calendar of Events

Este fin de semana La Isla de Cozumel será la sede del Segundo Scuba Fest del 12 al 15 de diciembre. Buzos de todo el mundo se reunirán en Cozumel para celebrar la belleza de nuestra vida marina, otorgarán reconocimientos a los hombres y mujeres que defienden nuestros océanos y bucearán en el nuevo “Arrecife Ruta Maya” de Cozumel. Contaremos con la presencia de Jean Michel Cousteau, hijo del famoso explorador submarino Jacques Cousteau. A la par de Scuba Fest estará la Muestra Gastronómica "Sabores de Cozumel" en la cual se presentarán diversos restaurantes, artesanos locales así como  "Cozumel Photo Shootout." Low Temps Predicted for Cozumel this Winter

The Meteorologist for Cozumel’s department of Civil Protection, Enrique Chavez Sevilla, is predicting low temperatures for the island during the winter season.  With 48 to 53 cold fronts expected to cross over Cozumel, temperatures could reach as low as 12C/53F.  Chavez Sevilla added that the cold fronts themselves aren’t the only contributing factor to a chilly winter.  In the previous few years, the island has experienced an especially mild winter, however, this year is expected to return to normal averages.

Enrique Chavez Sevilla, meteorólogo la Dirección de Protección Civil de Cozumel, pronostica bajas temperaturas para la Isla durante la temporada de invierno. Se prevé que pasaran sobre Cozumel 48 a 53 frentes, y las temperaturas podrían llegar bajar tanto como 12ºC/53ºF. Chávez Sevilla añadió que, en sí, los frentes fríos no son el único factor que contribuye para que se presente un invierno fío. En años anteriores, la Isla ha tenido inviernos  particularmente templados; sin embargo, se espera que en este año llegue a los valores normales.

Unofficial Rain Results from the Cozumel Country Club: A Perspective

Management at the Cozumel Country Club has been unofficially keeping track of rainfall on the golf course since 2002.  So far this calendar year they’ve registered 110 inches of rain.  To get a bit of perspective on this, yearly averages for the Country Club are somewhere around 60 inches/year.  Benny Campos, the General Manager of the Cozumel Country Club added that due to Cozumel’s extremely localized rain, these results might not be consistent with the official studies conducted by CONAGUA, (Comision Nacional del Agua) that keeps the official weather info at the International Airport.

De manera extraoficial la Gerencia del Cozumel Country Club ha dado seguimiento a las precipitaciones pluviales sobre el campo de golf desde  el año 2002. En lo que va del año calendario se han registrado 110 pulgadas de lluvia. Para una breve perspectiva de ello, los valores anuales para el Country Club son de aproximadamente 60 pulgadas/año. Benny Campos, Gerente General del Cozumel Country Club, agregó que debido a la lluvia tan localizada de Cozumel, es posible que estos resultados no se ajusten a los estudios oficiales realizados por la CONAGUA (Comisión Nacional del Agua), que mantiene la información meteorológica oficial en el Aeropuerto Internacional.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Nyx. This gorgeous black semi-long hair female kitten is the last of Concha's litter. She arrived at the shelter on August as a 500gs kitten, she's now 5 months old and weights almost 2k. She's spayed, fully vaccinated and dewormed: ready for her forever home! Nyx and her buddies are looking forward to see you at the shelter. 

Ricky. 9 month old dog, 12kilos. He was brought to the shelter with his siblings by Animal Control, when they were 1.5 months old in march. They were at the Carretera transversal and there was a guy threatening to kill them. All his siblings are enjoying their forever homes, but Ricky is still at the shelter. Super handsome dog, give him a chance please.

Volunteer at the shelter, it is so important for the dogs ad cats to get more individual attention, you can walk our dogs or play with the puppies and cats everyday 11am to 1pm and 3pm to 4:30pm, children must come with a responsible grown up. We have identification tags for your pets, come and see them, remember your pet must have it's collar with id tag at all times. Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Nyx - Esta hermosa gatita de pelaje negro semi-largo es la última de la camada de Concha. Llegó al refugio en Agosto con un peso de 500 gr, ahora tiene 5 meses de edad y pesa casi 2 kg. Está esterilizada, totalmente vacunada y desparasitada. ¡Lista para su hogar permanente! Nyx y sus compañeros desean verles en el refugio.

Ricky - Perro de 9 meses de edad con 12 kilos de peso. En Marzo, Control Animal lo trajo al refugio junto con sus hermanos cuando contaban 1.5 meses de edad. Se encontraban en la carretera transversal y un tipo amenazaba con matarlos. Todos sus hermanos ya están disfrutando de sus hogares permanentes, pero Ricky aún se encuentra en el refugio. Es un perro súper guapo, ¡por favor denle una oportunidad!

Estos y muchos otros animales les esperan en el albergue. Cozumel’s Last Ironman Finisher: Navin Singh: An Inspiration

Navin Singh was the very last official finisher of the Ford Ironman Cozumel, with a total race time of 16 hours 58 minutes.  As a PC, or physically challenged,  athlete  participating in this year’s Cozumel event, Navin hopes that his story will inspire anyone facing life’s challenges. 

Navin’s  journey to the finish line begin many years ago, while he sat in a hospital bed and watched an Ironman on TV.   In 1984 he was diagnosed with Guillian Barre Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system.  Essentially Navin awoke one morning at the age of 18 paralyzed from the neck down.  Through an extended regimen of physical therapy, and sheer force of will, Navin has essentially trained his body back, and 29 years later he needs only braces to walk or run due to the remaining paralysis below both his knees.

Working closely with his hometown Tri-team, VO2 Multi-sport, coaches, doctors and massage therapists, Navin’s has been training for marathon and tri-events for the last 4 years, however  training specifically for the Cozumel Triathlon, stated exactly a year before.

Navin arrived with team mates, family and a multitude of support, in Cozumel 4 days prior to the Sunday event.  Due to rough seas and inclement weather, his group was unable to acclimate to the ocean, or even practice the official route. 

Due to confusion at the start of the swim, Navin did not start with the PC group of athletes, but with his general age group.  As he attempted to head off to the right and out of the way, his swim goggles were knocked off, impairing his vision.  Undaunted, he carried on, slightly off course, which extended his swim time, however, he completed the swim portion with salt-swollen eyes.

Navin relied on handlers to assist with the transitions and used forearm crutches to facilitate the switch from swim to bike.  Throughout the course, he paid special attention to his nutrition and hydration, and even modified his run/walk ratio to adjust for persistent rain. 

Inspired by Navin’s story and dedication, Michael Weiss, the Professional Men’s winner for the event actually came out and ran with Navin to the finish line.  Navin’s next goal is the 2015 Boston Marathon.

This was Navin’s first trip to Cozumel, and first visit to Mexico.  He, and his Tri-team, rented a beachfront villa near Chankanaab, where they enjoyed a wide variety of homecooked meals.  Navin said he was really impressed with the amount of people that cheered him on, lap after lap, and not just athletes and their supporters but local families and children as well.  Navin, a father of 2, hopes to return to Cozumel to show his daughters where their father became an Ironman.

Navin Singh finalista de Ironman Cozumel: Una inspiración

Navin Singh fue el último  finalista oficial del Ford Ironman Cozumel, con un tiempo total de competencia de 16 horas con 58 minutos. Como atleta con capacidades diferentes, Navin participó en el evento de este año en Cozumel con la esperanza de que su historia inspire a toda persona que enfrenta desafíos en la vida.

El viaje de Navin hacia la meta inició hace muchos años mientras se encontraba en una cama de hospital viendo una competencia Ironman en la televisión. En el año 1984 le fue diagnosticado con el síndrome Guillian Barre, un raro trastorno autoinmune que afecta al sistema nervioso periférico. Cuando Navin contaba con 18 años de edad, despertó una mañana paralizado desde el cuello hacia abajo. A través de un prolongado régimen de terapia física y férrea fuerza de voluntad, Navin se ha mantenido entrenando para recuperar el movimiento en su cuerpo, y 29 años más tarde sólo requiere de aparatos ortopédicos para caminar o correr debido a la parálisis remanente debajo de ambas rodillas.

En su ciudad natal trabaja en estrecha colaboración con el equipo Tri, VO2 Multi-sport, entrenadores, doctores y masajistas. Durante los últimos 4 años, Navin ha estado entrenando para maratones y triatlones; particularmente, para el Triatlón de Cozumel, agendado precisamente un año antes.

Navin llegó 4 días antes del evento del día domingo acompañado de sus compañeros de equipo, familiares y un enorme apoyo por parte de Cozumel. A causa de la fuerte marejada e inclemencias en las condiciones del tiempo, a su equipo no le fue posible aclimatarse al océano o incluso realizar prácticas a través de la ruta oficial.

Debido a la confusión al inicio de la fase de natación, Navin no pudo comenzar con el grupo de atletas con capacidades diferentes sino con el grupo de su edad, en general. Cuando intentó salir hacia la derecha y fuera del camino, sus “googles” salieron volando, afectando, por ende, su capacidad de visibilidad. Sin perder el ánimo, prosiguió un poco fuera de curso, lo cual extendió su tiempo en el nado; a pesar de ello concluyó la fase de natación con ojos hinchados por la sal.

Navin se apoyo en soportes durante las transiciones utilizando muletas para hacer el cambio del nado a la bicicleta. A lo largo de la ruta, prestó especial atención a su nutrición e hidratación, e incluso modificó la proporción carrera/caminata para poder adaptarse a la pertinaz lluvia. Inspirado por la historia y dedicación de Navin, Michael Weiss, ganador del evento dentro grupo varonil de profesionales, salió y corrió junto a Navin acompañándole hasta la línea de meta. El próximo objetivo de Navin es el Maratón Boston 2015.

Esta fue la primera visita de Navin a Cozumel y su primer viaje a México. Él y su equipo Tri alquilaron una villa frente al mar, cerca de Chankanaab, donde disfrutaron de una gran variedad de comidas caseras. Navin dijo estar muy impresionado por la cantidad de gente que lo alentó, vuelta tras vuelta, y el ánimo no sólo provino por parte de los atletas y sus fanáticos, sino también de familias y niños locales. Navin, padre de 2 niñas, espera regresar a Cozumel para mostrar a sus hijas el lugar donde su padre se convirtió en un Ironman.

Cozumel History – There’s a very interesting thread, in the Cozumel 4 You facebook group that was started by Luh McDevitt, of the Magic of Design, about locations and places from the Cozumel past.  Although it’s been active for over two weeks now, if you can’t find it near the top of the C4Y Facebook group Just use the search function, located on the upper right hand side, just below the headerboard, and search for “Remember This”  Please feel free to add your memories and photos, it’s well worth the read.

Vote for the Best Cozumel Christmas Decorations - The Department of Tourism together with the Department of Economic Development Municipality organized two competitions for the Christmas holiday, one is decorating Christmas trees and the other is decorating facades. The novelty of this contest is that the winner is the participant with the most votes in this municipal webpage..  The contest runs until the  22nd  of December.

Irma’s Mayan Word of the Week - Alux, but in this área, the aluxes protect crops, and they also like to do mischief, so when someone hears a strange noice, they say beware of the alux, pronouced alúsh. A friend of mine who didn´t behave very well at a party, said to me, se me salió el alux!, the elf in me came out!...so maybe you will be saying this after new years eve.  Irma Portilla de Cantarell, owner of the AXA Insurance located on Av. 30 and 11, has been offering her insight into the Mayan language on the Cozumel 4 You facebook group.  Stay tuned for the next lesson. 

Christmas Raffle Prizes Sought For Party – For the second year in a row, His Life Ministries, along with various Cozumel volunteers is hosting a party for hardworking professionals in Cozumel on Saturday December 21st fro 3 pm – 7 pm. Last year  nearly 500 Cozumel Police officers and their families were honored at a two day event at the Cozumel Bowling Allley.  This year the Doctors and Nurses at the General Hospital, and the Centro de Salud will be honored. This Christmas celebration is in gratitude for their service to others in Cozumel – since these hospitals  provide service  at the lowest costs in our Cozumel Community Donations are being solicited for raffle prizes. Please bring your gifts to the Bowling Alley the early day of the party, or evenings prior  when the Bowling Alley is open. Anything from wine, food baskets, fans, TVs, or  gift certificates. A pesar de que ha estado activo durante casi dos semanas, si no lo puede encontrar cerca de la parte superior de la página del grupo  Cozumel 4 You en Facebook tan sólo utilice la función de búsqueda, ubicada en la parte superior derecha, justo bajo del encabezado, y busque “Remember This” (“Recuerde Esto”). Vota por las mejores decoraciones de Navidad en Cozumel -  la Dirección de Turismo en conjunto con la Dirección de Desarrollo Económico del Municipio organizamos dos concursos con motivo de las fiestas navideñas, uno es de decoración de arbolitos de navidad y el otro es de decoración de fachadas.  Lo novedoso de este concurso, es que resultará ganador aquel participante que tenga mas votos en el micrositio que se creo en linea para el concurso, siendo que tanto locales como turistas después de visitar el parque Benito Juarez podrán votar en linea por su favorito, hasta el dia 22 de diciembre.

Un amigo mío que no se comportó muy bien en una fiesta, me dijo: “¡Se me salió el alux!”, “¡El elfo en mí salió!”. Así que es posible que usted acabe diciendo lo mismo después de la noche de Año Nuevo. Irma Portilla de Cantarell, propietaria de Seguros AXA cuyas oficinas se ubican en las Avenidas 30 y 11, ha estado ofreciendo sus conocimientos en la lengua maya al grupo de Cozumel 4 You en Facebook. Se busca reunir premios  para la rifa en fiesta navideña - Por segundo año consecutivo, el grupo His Life Ministries junto con diversos voluntarios de Cozumel, están organizando una fiesta para el día sábado 21 de diciembre de 15:00 -19:00 hrs en honor a los dedicados y profesionales trabajadores en Cozumel. El año pasado cerca de 500 agentes de la policía de Cozumel y sus familias fueron homenajeados en un evento con una duración de dos días en el Boliche de Cozumel. Este año, los médicos y las enfermeras del Hospital General y el Centro de Salud serán honrados. Esta celebración de Navidad es en agradecimiento por el servicio que brindan a otros en Cozumel, en virtud de que estos hospitales ofrecen servicios a menor costo a la comunidad cozumeleña. Se solicitan donativos para los premios de las rifas. Por favor lleven sus regalos al boliche, temprano, el día de la fiesta o por la noche antes de que el boliche abra. Desde vino, canastas con alimentos, ventiladores, televisores o certificados de regalo. La meta es de 30 a 50 regalos para rifar. Consulten los detalles del evento en su página en Facebook.
