Cozumel 's Christmas Fair Supporting Small Business Open

Municipal Officials have officially endorsed and inaugurated a small business christmas fair entitled, “Tianguis Navideño 2011.” The Tianguis consists of 28 small businesses here on the island, selling Christmas products and other wares at reduced prices.   You can complete your last minute holiday shopping at the Parque Andres Quintana Roo, directly in front of the Palacio Municipal.  Be sure do stop by, support local businesses and spread some holiday cheer.

Se inaugura feria navideña en Cozumel en apoyo a pequeños comerciantes

Las autoridades municipales oficialmente han refrendado su apoyo e inaugurado una feria navideña en apoyo a pequeños comerciantes llamada “Tianguis Navideño 2011”. El Tianguis consiste en la venta de productos navideños y otras mercancías de 28 pequeños comerciantes de la Isla a precios reducidos.  Usted podrá completar sus compras navideñas de último minuto en el parque Andrés Quintana Roo, ubicado frente al Palacio Municipal. Asegúrense de visitar la feria, brindando apoyo a los negocios locales y difundir la alegría navideña. 

Cozumel Police Receive An Early Christmas Gift: A New Patrol Car & Radios

Christmas comes early to members of the Cozumel Police Force who recently received a new patrol car and new radios. Cozumel's police force had been down a patrol car since an accident almost a month ago.

La Navidad llegó anticipadamente para las fuerzas policiacas de Cozumel, ya que en fechas recientes recibieron una nueva patrulla así como radios nuevos. Desde el accidente ocurrido hace casi un mes, la policía tenía una patrulla de menos.

Tourism Promoted Between Cozumel & the Yucatan

Residents of our neighboring state in the Yucatan Peninsula, the “”Estado Libre y Soberano de Yucatán”  are actively begin encouraged to take their vacations here in Cozumel.  Cozumel’s Municipal President, Aurelio Joaquín González, has announced that he is working with Yucatan Governor, Ivonne Ortega Pacheco to promote cross tourism between the two locations.  Last year, Cozumel and the City of Merida became sister cities. 

Merida was originally built atop a Mayan City, T”ho, making many scholars consider it to be the oldest continually inhabited city in the Americas.  In the late 19th and 20th century a henequen boon made Merida one of the wealthiest cities in the world, evidence of which can still be seen in the historic, Paseo de Montejo.  The “White City” features multiple museums, art gallerias, historical sites, and world class restaurants.  For more information on visiting the area, please check out, Yucatan Living.

Se promueve el turismo entre Cozumel y Yucatán

Entre los residentes del vecino estado en la península de Yucatán, Estado Libre y Soberano de Yucatán, se está llevando una activa promoción para que pasen sus vacaciones aquí en Cozumel. El Presidente Municipal de Cozumel, Aurelio Joaquín González, ha comunicado que se encuentra trabajando conjuntamente con la Gobernadora de Yucatán, Ivonne Ortega Pacheco, con el objeto de promover el intercambio turístico entre ambos lugares. El año pasado, Cozumel y la ciudad de Mérida se convirtieron en ciudades hermanas.   

Originalmente la ciudad de Mérida fue  edificada sobre la ciudad maya T’Hó, y es considerada por muchos académicos como la ciudad más antigua e ininterrumpidamente habitada en el continente americano. A finales del siglo 19 y comienzos del siglo 20, el auge henequenero hizo de Mérida una de las ciudades con mayor riqueza en el mundo; prueba de ello puede aún observarse en el histórico Paseo de Montejo.  La “Ciudad Blanca” se caracteriza por tener múltiples museos, galerías de arte, sitios históricos y restaurantes de clase mundial. Volunteers Making a Difference on the Island : Orthopedics

When Greg Caldwell started visiting Cozumel almost 20 years ago, he didn’t realize what a special need he would fill here on the island.  Greg and his wife Kathy have been visiting Cozumel for almost two decades.  Back home in Chicago, Greg owns a company that manufactures orthopedics and prosthetic limbs.  During his many visits here, word got out as what Greg could do, and people began coming by with friends and family in need of Greg’s special assistance.  Through the years, Greg has constructed and supplied special shoes, braces, and even prosthetic hands,  legs and feet for island residents, all free of charge.  Recently, Greg and Kathy have purchased a home here on the island, and their altruistic endeavors continue. 

Just last month, Greg created braces so that a man who had not been able to stand in three years was able to take his first steps.  His efforts have come to the affection of the social service organization, DIF, who is in the process of creating a special dispensation so that the retired couple can assist even more needy individuals.  If you have experience in orthopedics, or come and go from the island often and would be willing to carry back a mold or small part please contact solodive@msn.com.

Voluntarios que hacen la diferencia en la Isla: Ortopedia

Cuando Greg Caldwell comenzó a visitar la Isla hace 20 años, no se percató de cómo ayudaría a las necesidades especiales en la Isla. Desde hace casi dos décadas, Greg y su esposa Kathy han estado visitando la Isla.  En Chicago, la ciudad de donde proviene Greg, él es propietario de una empresa que se dedica a la fabricación de extremidades ortopédicas y prostéticas. Durante sus múltiples visitas a la Isla, se corrió la voz acerca de lo que Greg podía hacer, y muchas personas comenzaron a visitarle con amigos y familia solicitando el especial apoyo que Greg podía brindar. A través de los años, Greg ha fabricado y suministrado zapatos especiales, aparatos ortopédicos e incluso manos, piernas y pies prostéticos para habitantes de la Isla; todo sin costo alguno. En fechas recientes, Greg y Kathy adquirieron una residencia en la Isla y sus proyectos altruistas continúan. 

Apenas el mes pasado Greg creó un aparato ortopédico para un señor que durante tres años no había podido estar de pie y quien por fin logro dar sus primeros pasos. Sus esfuerzos han sido percibidos por la organización social DIF, que actualmente se encuentra en el proceso de crear una dispensa especial de manera que esta pareja ya retirara, pueda brindar mayor ayuda a personas con necesidades especiales. THE STORY OF GOGAN

This is a reply to a request for background information about Gogan, a wire-haired dog that we had at the shelter and was who found his forever home in Canada, with Cathy Witlox’s family.

Hi Cathy,

Gohan came to me personally so I will tell you his story.

In Cozumel there are a few homeless people, and I count four of them as my acquaintances. I used to run every morning along the waterfront, and every day around 6 a.m I would greet four homeless men hanging out in the area near the light house, usually with a visible hang-over. We always exchanged a "good morning" and this lasted several years. Every day I had my four dogs with me, which raised warm comments from them almost every time. One day I saw a young dog hanging around with them. They said they found him right there, by the light house. They told me "Somebody left this puppy here and left money for his food! We found $7 dollars under him!" It is easy to imagine how the seven dollars were spent, and I am sure that they still look under laying dogs, just in case. The dog stayed with these men for several weeks, and although it was not the best of situations, he was OK. I offered help with vaccines and de-worming, and of course neutering would come with that. The day we picked him up, the men wisely suggested that it was better to find him a good home, which was of course my ultimate intention. I would have not guessed though, that the good home this dog would end up at, was mine! His current name is Boris. His street name was Van Damme.

Since then, these men became dog rescuers of some sort. Every now and then they will report to me a dog in a bad situation; sometimes I am able to help, sometimes they don't remember where they saw the dog (and argue about it) and sometimes I'm not sure they are not making it up. But one day in mid May, one of them walked in my store and he had a mission. Some days they just want a soda -they know well I will not give them money which would be spent on alcohol-, but this time the messenger was so excited about what he was going to tell me that he couldn't even get started. "We have... this little... very little dog that we found... his hair is like wires and he is very little... and he needs help. We called him Fluffy! Do you want to see him?" So off he went and came back a few minutes later with one of his friends carrying a wire-haired, smallish to medium size dog. He was very cute, but definitely not fluffy. The man was holding him like a baby, bouncing him so hard the poor dog might have been dizzy from it! He looked scared and a bit skinny, but otherwise he was OK. We took him to the shelter, had him checked out, and he joined the many other dogs that are waiting for a good home. Wire haired dogs are not very popular here, so we all hoped he would have an opportunity abroad. And happily it worked out! Through the group Rat Terrier Rescue, in Canada, he got the best home possible. He lives with Cathy Witlox and her family, which includes 3 other dogs.

Vacation Like You Live Here: Helping the Community by Cindy Trautwein

What that means to some of us that have vacationed, perhaps taken a few shells, soaked up the sun and made lots of footprints in the sand, well, was to take something from Cozumel.  But what about at Christmas when the vacationer like those of us who live here want to give back to the community, it's people, the culture, the kids. In comes a family from Canada this week. Not a family who has been multiple times but a family who simply wants to give this Christmas.  So we meet up at Mega where they have bought nearly 30 toys ranging from 3 yrs. old to teenager (soccer balls count for a older kids too).  They wanted to know of some families that were in need.  A post on Cozumel4You generates enough private messages back for needy families that will consume more than Santa's sleigh so we add some Dispensa's which are prepacked boxes of food that cost about $20 usd and will feed a family of 4 for a week.  Just the basics but for something they  would have never expected from a 'visitor'  There is so much joy in giving.  Cozumel embraces it's visitors.  If you vacationing or you want to live here there is always an opportunity to give...not just at Christmas.  Visit www.friendsofcozumel.com for another opportunity to do just that ...all year around

Para algunos de nosotros que hemos vacacionado, tal vez agarrado algunas conchas, que nos hemos impregnado con los rayos del sol y dejado muchas huellas en la arena, bueno, significa llevarse algo de Cozumel. Y, ¿qué sucede en la época navideña cuando un vacacionista, como los que aquí vivimos, deseamos devolverle a la comunidad, a su gente, a la cultura, a los niños? Esta semana desde Canadá llegó una familia que no ha estado aquí muchas ocasiones; sin embargo, esta es una familia que simplemente quiere dar esta Navidad. Así pues, nos encontramos en Mega donde compraron casi 30 juguetes para menores desde 3 años de edad hasta adolescentes (las pelotas de futbol también cuentan para los chicos de más edad). Además deseaban conocer a algunas familias que tuvieran necesidades. Un mensaje en Cozumel4You generaría tanta correspondencia privada para dar a las familias con necesidades, que consumiría más espacio de lo que cabe en el trineo de Santa Claus, por lo que decidimos agregar algunas despensas; estas consisten en cajas con productos básicos por un costo aproximado de $20 dólares norteamericanos y que darán alimento a una familia de 4 integrantes, durante una semana. Constan de sólo lo básico, sin embargo es algo que nunca esperarían recibir de un “visitante”.  Hay tanta alegría en el dar. Cozumel acoge a sus visitantes y si usted se encuentra de vacaciones o desea vivir aquí, siempre existe la posibilidad para dar…no sólo en Navidad. Visite

El 16º Evento Anual de Navidad y a Beneficio tendrá lugar el día 28 de diciembre en el club de playa Money Bar a partir de las 7:00 p.m. La cena estilo buffet, ha sido donada por los mejores restaurantes de Cozumel, y se servirá a las 8:00 p.m. La música en vivo será interpretada por FUGGA, la banda del restaurante French Quarter. En el transcurso de la noche se llevaran a cabo una serie de rifas con magníficos premios los cuales han sido donados por comerciantes y artistas locales.
