Cozumel Augments Safety & Security for Holiday Season
The Holiday season is the busiest time of the year for tourism in Cozumel. This year, Municipal Authorities have implemented additional security measures during this time, to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors to our island. Cozumel Police have set up checkpoints to ensure that drivers of automobiles are using their seatbelts, and those on scooters and motorcycles have the required protective headgear. Ambulances have also been stationed in strategic areas, insuring a rapid response time. Additional lifeguards will supervise Cozumel’s beaches. The added safety measures fall under the supervision of the Civil Protection, and will remain in place until the 9th of January.
Cozumel Incrementa la Seguridad para la Temporada de Fin de Año
La época de mayor afluencia de turismo en Cozumel, es el fin de año. Este año, las autoridades municipales han implementado medidas de seguridad adicionales para esta temporada con el objeto de garantizar la seguridad y bienestar tanto de los residentes como de aquellos que visitan nuestra Isla. El cuerpo policiaco local ha establecido puntos de control para verificar que los automovilistas utilizan los cinturones de seguridad y que quienes manejan motocicletas utilizan cascos. De igual manera, se han asignado puntos estratégicos a los servicios de ambulancias y con ello asegurar una rápida respuesta a las emergencias. Las playas de Cozumel contaran con la supervisión de guardavidas adicionales. La supervisión de medidas de seguridad adicionales compete a la Dirección Municipal de Protección Civil y continuarán vigentes hasta el día 9 de enero.
   
Paradise Beach Swimming Pool/Special Events Area to Open this Week
Just in time for the holidays, Paradise Beach will inaugurate their brand new swimming pool & special events area this week. The swimming pool, which holds over 700,000 square meters of water, is reputed to be the second largest pool on the island, and is located between a large sundeck, and a massive palapa covered bar. The entire area sports fiber-optic lighting, as well as a state-of-the art sound system and a DJ booth. Additional lockers, changing areas, bathrooms, fresh-water showers, and a gift shop have also been installed to cater to every guest’s needs. While the entire area is open to the public, It can also be reserved for special events, such as weddings and birthday parties. Paradise Beach also offers a 20% discount to island residents with either plan local or a credential with a Cozumel address.
La Piscina de Paradise Beach/El área para Eventos Especiales se Inaugura esta Semana
Justo a tiempo para las fiestas, Paradise Beach inaugura esta semana su nueva piscina y área para eventos especiales. Con una capacidad de poco más de 700,000 metros cuadrados de agua, esta piscina está considerada como la segunda más grande en la Isla y se encuentra ubicada entre una amplia terraza y el bar que se encuentra cubierto por una gigantesca palapa. Toda el área se cuenta con iluminación a través de fibra óptica y cuenta, además con un sistema de sonido de punta y cabina para DJ.
También se han instalado casilleros, vestidores, baños, regaderas con agua dulce y una tienda de regalos para satisfacer las necesidades de todos los visitantes. En tanto que toda el área se encuentra abierta al público, también puede reservarse para eventos especiales tales como bodas y celebraciones de cumpleaños. A través del Plan Local o una credencial que muestre domicilio en Cozumel, Paradise Beach ofrece un 20% de descuento a los residentes locales.
 
Cozumel Visited by Mega Yachts
Could Cozumel be entering into another tourist market? Within the past week Cozumel has had the unique honor of being visited by both the 3rd largest yacht in the world and the 8th largest yacht in the world. Saturday, Cozumel welcomed the Al Mirqab, who holds 8th place in the largest yacht competition, into our waters. Belonging to Qatar's Prime Minister, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, the yacht accommodates 10 guests in 5 guest apartments with one VIP owner’s suite. Each apartment has its own bathroom, living room and double bedroom. Al Mirqab has a crew of 60, and includes a cinema, outside bars, inside and outside jacuzzi, sunbathing places and a helicopter pad. The yacht has a length of 133 meters .
On Tuesday, Cozumel was visited by the Prince Abdulaziz, which holds the title of 3rd largest yacht in the world. Belonging to the Saudi Royal Family, Prince Abdulaziz is used to conduct official business as well as for pleasure. Originally built for the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia who named the yacht after his son, it is now owned by his brother Addullah. The yacht has a length of 147 meters and offers accommodation for up to 64 guests, and up to 65 crew onboard,
On previous occasions, Cozumel has welcomed the Octopus, the 9th largest yacht, owned by Microsoft Co-Founder Paul Allen.
La Isla de Cozumel es Visitada por Mega Yates
¿Es posible que Cozumel esté iniciando otro mercado turístico? En el transcurso de esta última semana, la Isla de Cozumel ha tenido el especial honor de contar con la visita de dos grandes yates, los cuales ocupan el tercer y el octavo lugar entre los más grandes del mundo.
El día sábado, las aguas de Cozumel dieron la bienvenida al yate Al Mirqab, que ocupa el octavo lugar dentro de la contienda entre los de mayor tamaño. Con una capacidad que aloja a 10 huéspedes en 5 habitaciones y la suite VIP del propietario, pertenece al Primer Ministro de Qatar, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. Cada habitación cuenta con baño propio, sala y en base doble. Al Mirqab se encuentra integrado por 60 de tripulación e incluye cine, bares exteriores, jacuzzi interior y exterior, áreas para asolearse y helipuerto. El yate tiene una eslora de 133 metros
Ostentando el título como el tercer yate más grande del mundo, Prince Abdulaziz arribó a Cozumel el día martes. Prince Abdulaziz pertenece a la familia real de Arabia Saudita y es utilizado tanto para asuntos oficiales como para viajes de recreo. Humane Society Pets of the Week - by Monica Velasco
Hello Friends of the Humane Society of Cozumel! It is the end of the year and we are getting prepared for our XV Christmas party, our biggest fundraiser of the year. We hope to have great attendance and make it our most successful Xmas dinner yet! On this invitation, we have featured three puppies which needed to be at separate foster homes, as they were too young to be at the shelter. A few weeks ago, the three of them were adopted together, and they are loving it!
For the last two years, we have been strengthened by the support of IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). We still have to carry our own weight, but their important backing has allowed us to do a lot more and better, than we could without them. 2010 has been a year of work and success in many ways. The biggest event was, without a doubt, the rescue of the dump dogs and here.
Rescuing these animals would have not been possible without the support of IFAW, who fully covered the expenses of medical treatment and transfer to homes in the US. Through them and Cloud Nine, several of those dogs plus other shelter dogs and cats flew aboard a 969 Piper Aztec to permanent homes or temporary shelters in the US. Some of those dump dogs are still with us at the shelter, and we are hoping that in 2011 they will too find the happy ending to their story.
We also had our first annual photo contest (prizes sponsored by IFAW), which was quite successful. Winning photos are attached.
This year we also had some necessary repairs done, like re-building the roofs of all the kennels and the floors of the kennel rows; converted what used to be the outdoor cattery into a garden/sitting area; strengthened the catteries' cyclone fence; built roofs over windows to avoid water coming in; clean up dog socializing areas; repaired iron work on kennel doors. Plus the normal plumbing and electricity, etc.
As far as our every day work, during 2010 we have received (so far) over 479 animals, adopted out 297 and done 965 spay/neuter surgeries.
Every year our work load increases, and so does the number of animals that we are able to help. We are immensely grateful to all of our sponsors, those who support with money and also those who support with services (like Cozumel 4You!), who have helped us over the years and continue to do so. I thank from the heart all our volunteers and foster parents, for their dedication, colaboration and friendship, and our valuable STAFF for their hard work and true love for the animals. A special THANK YOU goes to Erika and Joaquín, representatives of IFAW in Cozumel, who besides being a tremendous injection of energy and knowledge to our team, are truly great friends.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria- Monica Velasco
¡Hola Amigos de la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel! Estamos finalizando el año y preparando la XV Fiesta de Navidad, nuestro evento más importante del año. Esperamos que vaya mucha gente y que ésta sea nuestra cena de Navidad más exitosa. En esta invitación, tenemos a tres cachorritos que necesitaron estar con familias puesto que eran muy pequeños para estar en el refugio. Se recuperaron, crecieron, y ahora los tres: Dina, Brandy y Sifu, fueron adoptados juntos.
Los últimos dos años, nos ha fortalecido el apoyo de IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). Nosotros seguimos sosteniendo el regufio, pero su valioso apoyo nos ha permitido hacer mucho más y mejor, que lo que podríamos hacer sin ellos.
2010 ha sido un año de trabajo y exitos. Lo más notorio fue, sin duda, el rescate de los perros y gatos del basurero y aqui. Este esfuerzo no hubiera sido posible sin el apoyo de IFAW, cubriendo los gastos para tratamientos médicos y para transferir algunos de ellos a los E.U.
A través de ellos y de Cloud Nine varios de esos perros, y otros perros y gatos más del refugio, volaron abordo de un 969 Piper Aztec hacia sus nuevos hogares en E.U. Algunos de los perros del basurero están todavía en el refugio y tenemos el deseo y esperanza de que en 2011, ellos también encontrarán un final felíz para su historia.
También tuvimos nuestro primer concurso anual de fotografía (premios patrocinados por IFAW), el cual tuvo bastante éxito. Adjuntamos las fotos ganadoras.
Este año también hicimos reparaciones y modificaciones necesarias, como reconstruír los techos de todas las perreras y los pisos de los pasillos; convertimos lo que era la gatera exterior en un jardín y área de espera; reforzamos y protegimos las mallas ciclónicas de las gateras; se construyeron techos volados sobre las ventanas para evitar la entrada de agua; se mejoraron las áreas de socialización de perros; se repararon las rejas de perreras. Esto además del mantenimiento usual de electricidad, plomería, vaciado de fosa, etc.
En cuanto a nuestro trabajo diario, durante 2010 (hasta el día de hoy) hemos:
recibido 479 animals, dado en adopción 297 y hecho 965 cirugías de esterilización.
Cada año, nuestra carga de trabajo aumenta, y con ello el número de animales que podemos ayudar. Estamos inmensamente agradecidos con nuestros patrocinadores, quienes nos han apoyado a través de los años y lo siguen haciendo. Personalmente, agradezco de corazón a todos los voluntarios por su dedicación, colaboración y amistad, y a nuestro STAFF por su buen trabajo y verdadero amor por los animales. Va un agradecimiento especial a Erika y Joaquín, representantes de IFAW en Cozumel, quienes además de ser una inyección de energía y conocimiento a nuestro equipo, son verdaderos amigos para nosotros.

XV Annual Humane Society Christmas Fund Raiser
Mark your social calendar “full” for Wednesday December 29th, when the Money Bar Beach Club hosts the XV Annual Humane Society Christmas Fund Raiser from 5 pm- 11:00 pm Tickets are $25 usd or $300 pesos, and include entrance to the beach club, appetizers, buffet style dinner and a raffle, with live music performed by the "Red Eye Band." There will also be a cash bar and additional raffles. Food for the dinner has been donated by some of the finest restaurants in Cozumel. Pre-sale tickets are available at La Cocay, Rock'n Java, American Discount Pharmacy and Funky Bazaar. Children under 12 half price.

Have you always wanted to hang ten? Nacho Guiterrez is your man. Owner of Cozumel Surfing, Nacho has taken his talents to the next level and is now teaching others how to ride the waves. He offers 4 hour and 8 hour private classes. Nacho also has discounted group classes to island residents most Sundays. Classes start with on-shore practice, where the basics, such as how to paddle out, and how to stand up are taught. After that, you’re into the ocean, with Nacho by your side. Most people generally can stand up after only a few short hours.
Born and raised here on the island, Nacho is one of Cozumel’s most recognized personalities, plus he’s been surfing, well, since, forever. Most afternoons you can find him, on the other side of the island, where the best waves are. Although Nacho has been surfing a long time, he still has a healthy respect for the ocean. In fact, an unofficial auxiliary lifeguard of Cozumel, he’s saved a lot of people who have been caught in some of the tricky currents often found on the other side. Sale of Lion Fish Fillets Planned
While most island residents have discovered that lion fish are actually quite tasty, fisherman have discovered that there may very well be a market for lion fish fillets. The Sociedad Cooperativa de Producción Pesquera, or the Cooperative for the Fishing Production, has been making plans to market both on a national level and and international level, lion fish fillets. This reef predator, considered to be both “venomous and voracious” eats other fish alarming rate, and other food sources for other more edible fish, such as grouper and snapper, and will attack reef-cleaning fish such as parrot fish. Perro Verde’s Last Days – The vegetarian restaurant, “El Perro Verde.” Is closing their doors for good on Friday, December 24th, at 5pm. Their final hours on Friday will be from 1 – 5 pm. Come by and have a final lunch at their great location. The Perro Verde is on 5 Av between Calle 3 and Calle 5.

Rolandi’s Cozumel is offering a exclusive Prix fixe menu of 5 ourses for New Year’s Eve, for more information, check out their page. La Cocay has special menus for both Christmas and New Years, as well as special hours. They’ll be open with a special Christmas menu on the 24th, a New Year’s Menu on the 31st and will be closed on both December 25th and January 1st.
