GreenPeace’s “Rainbow Warrior” To Call Into Cozumel In February To Promote Sustainable Future

Executives for Greenpeace Mexico have recently announced the arrival of the “Rainbow Warrior” next month.  After spending time in Cozumel, the environmentally “green” ship will sail up to Vera Cruz, where she will also seek to raise environmental awareness.  The nearly 60 meter ship is primarily wind-powered and carries a state-of-the-art satellite communication and it’s own mini-water treatment plant.  For more information on the ship, check out Greenpeace’s webpage.

This is actually the third “Rainbow Warrior” that Greenpeace has sailed.  The first was damaged in a bombing in 1985, after campaigning against nuclear testing in the Pacific, and helping put an end to destructive fishing operations.  The last time the “Rainbow Warrior” called  into Cozumel in 2010.

Ejecutivos de Greenpeace México recientemente dieron a conocer el arribo del “Rainbow Warrior” para el próximo mes.  Después de permanecer un tiempo en Cozumel, el barco medioambientalmente “verde” navegará hacia Veracruz, donde también buscará aumentar la conciencia sobre el medio ambiente. La embarcación de casi 60 metros de eslora se impulsa principalmente por el viento y cuenta con comunicación satelital de punta así como con su propia mini-planta de tratamiento de agua. De hecho, este es el tercer “Rainbow Warrior” que Greenpeace ha botado al agua. El primero fue dañado por una bomba en el año 1985, después de hacer campaña contra las pruebas nucleares en el Pacífico y ayudar a poner fin a las prácticas de pesca destructiva. La última ocasión que el "Rainbow Warrior" visitó Cozumel, fue en el año 2010.

9 Tons of Cozumel Electronic & Appliance Garbage Collected

On Wednesday January 8th  CAMAR, Cozumel’s Centro de Acopio de Materiales Reciclables (recycling center), will close their program of collecting used electronics, household appliances and batteries. During that time, the program, which started in November 2013, has collected approximately nine tons of refuse.     CAMAR is open Monday – Friday from 8am to 3 pm. 

Kathy Watts, founder of the Trashy Little Group, who organizes a monthly beach clean-up, has been kind enough to take the time to compile a list of information about recycling resources here in Cozumel. 

Consider also, attending or donating a prize for the beach clean ups.  This completely volunteer program has collected over 1000 bags of garbage off our beaches in 2013, to find out more about how you can get involved, check out their group in facebook.

Se recolectaron 9 toneladas de basura entre electrónicos y electrodomésticos

El miércoles 8 de enero, CAMAR (Cozumel Centro de Acopio de Materiales Reciclables) concluirá el programa de recolecta de aparatos electrónicos usados, de electrodomésticos y baterías. Durante ese tiempo, el programa que empezó el 13 de noviembre, ha recolectado aproximadamente nueve toneladas de desechos. CAMAR está abierto de lunes a viernes de 8 a.m. a 3 p.m. Kathy Watts, fundadora del grupo Trashy Little, que mensualmente organiza una limpieza a las playas, ha tenido la gentileza de tomarse el tiempo para recopilar una lista informativa sobre  recursos de reciclaje aquí en Cozumel .

También tomen en cuenta acudir o donar un premio en el apoyo a la limpieza de playas. Durante el año 2013, este programa formado por voluntarios, recolectó más de 1,000 bolsas de basura de nuestras playas. Para mayores detalles acerca de cómo puede participar, eche un vistazo al grupo en Facebook.

2013: More than 1,200,000 Passengers Through Downtown Cozumel Fiscal Pier

Cozumel’s Port Authority, Administracion Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo, or ApiQroo, has released the 2013 statistics, and is reporting that more than 1,200,000 people made use of Cozumel’s downtown pier last year.  Although these figures cover both ferry companies, they show a marked increase in the use of the downtown, or fiscal pier from previous years.

La Autoridad Portuaria de Cozumel, Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo o Apiqroo, ha dado a conocer las estadísticas del año 2013 e informa que más de 1.2 millones de personas hicieron uso del muelle en el centro de Cozumel el año pasado. Si bien estas cifras incluyen a ambas compañías de ferries, muestran un marcado incremento en el uso del centro de la ciudad o del muelle fiscal, a comparación de años anteriores.

Humane Society Pets of the Week  by Janice Ramirez Castro

Kary, female 2 year old  dog , weight 14.3 kg. She was rescued by a supporter Tina Granillo, nobody was caring for her anymore. Her collar had rotted into her neck from them tying her up. She broke away and for days was wandering the street with the collar embedded. Tina has been fostering her, but soon will have to go back to the States, so an urgent adoption is needed or foster placement. She has been under our medical care since October 1, 2013

Tony, as in Tony Stark, is part of a litter of kittens we call; the Avengers (Steve, Natasha, Pepper and Tony)  they arrived at 5 weeks old, they were found in  a broken wall next to an abandoned house. The nice lady that rescued them wanted to keep them but she owns 3 pit bulls that are not cat friendly, all are very affectionate, playful and quite acrobatic! Admission date: October 30, 2013

PLEASE: Volunteer at the shelter, it is so important for the dogs and cats to get hug-a-therapy, you can walk our dogs or play with the puppies and cats Monday to Saturday 11am to 1pm and 3pm to 4:30pm and Sundays 11am to 3pm children must come with a responsible grown up. Our pets love the attenttion and you'll have a nice day.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria por Janice Ramirez Castro

Kary, perra de 2 años, con peso de 14,3 k, fue rescatada por una defensora de los animales, Tina Granillo, pues nadie más cuidaba de ella. Su collar se había podrido dentro de su cuello de tanto tenerla amarrada. Logro escaparse y durante días estuvo vagando por las calles con el collar incrustado. Tina ha estado cuidándola, pero pronto tendrá que volver a los Estados Unidos, por lo que la adopción de Kary es urgente o colocarla en hogares de adopción temporal. Ha estado bajo nuestra atención médica desde Octubre 1, 2013

Tony,  como Tony Stark, es parte de una camada de gatitos a quienes llamamos ‘los Vengadores’ (Steve, Natasha, Pepper y Tony) que llegaron a las 5 semanas de nacidos. Fueron encontrados en un muro derrumabdo, al lado de una casa abandonada. La buena señora que los rescato quería quedarse con ellos, pero es propietaria de 3 pit bulls que no son amistosos con los gastos. ¡Todos los gatitos son muy cariñosos, juguetones y bastante acrobáticos! Honoring Traditions: “Las Cabañuelas,” Mayan Weather Predictions by Monica Sauza by Monica Sauza

The ancient Mayans are revered for their knowledge of astronomy, however, they have also left behind another gift, the tradition of  “Las Cabañuelas,”   which has survived over 500 years.    According to tradition, the first twelve days of the year represent the weather for the each month in the year (January 1st = January; January 2 = February, and so on). When reaching January 13, it goes the other way around, this is, January 13 is December, January 14 is November, and so on. This cycle ends on January 24th, hereafter each remaining day represents two months, morning being one month, in this case January, and afternoon representing February.  Then, on the 31st day of January, the 24 hours in the day represent one month starting at 01:00 am until noon (December) and then going backwards again.

The Mayans, and later the Spaniards, used this system to predict the weather, with January being the month that forecasted the rest of the year.  A Franciscan monk traveling with Christopher Columbus, wrote: “Through their gods and observations on the first days of the year, the natives know which days will be good and which will be bad, which will be rainy and which will be dry”. 

According to a very knowledgeable local historian, who has for many years, been tracking the weather using this system, has found it to still be relatively accurate.  For more information on this interesting Mayan Tradition, and how the weather can be predicted, check out the following link.

Honrando tradiciones: "Las Cabañuelas", pronósticos mayas sobre el clima  por Monica Sauza

Los antiguos mayas son admirados por sus conocimientos en astronomía, sin embargo, también nos legaron otro obsequio: la tradición de “Las Cabañuelas” que ha sobrevivido más de 500 años. De acuerdo a la tradición, los primeros doce días del año representan el clima que prevalecerá durante cada mes del año (el 1º de enero equivale al mes de enero; el 2 de enero al mes de febrero, etc.). Al llegar a día 13 de enero, el conteo retrocede siendo entonces que el día 13 de enero representa al mes de diciembre, el 14 de enero al mes de noviembre y así sucesivamente.  Este ciclo  concluye el día 31 de enero y las 24 horas del día representan un mes del año, iniciando a la 01:00 a.m. y al llegar al mediodía (diciembre), retrocede el conteo nuevamente. 

Los mayas y, posteriormente los españoles, utilizaron este sistema para predecir el clima, siendo que el mes de enero pronosticaba el clima para el resto del año. Un monje franciscano que viajaba con Cristóbal Colón escribió: “Saben estos indios por su consultas a sus dioses y su observación de los primeros días del año cuáles serán buenos y cuáles serán malos, cuáles pluviosos y cuáles secos”.

De acuerdo a un sabio historiador local que durante años ha analizado el clima utilizando este sistema, ha encontrado que es relativamente exacto. Para más información acerca de esta interesante tradición y de cómo puede predecirse el clima, eche un vistazo a esto enlace.

Volunteer at the Airport for the Cruz Roja - If you’re wintering in Cozumel and would like to help out the island community here is a great opportunity.  Volunteer just three hours a week at the airport departure lounge soliciting donations for the Cozumel Cruz Roja.  Overall, the Airport Group will be active for ten weeks this winter, beginning mid-January through the end of March. Museum Announces Writing Contest “Memorias de Una Isla” To mark the anniversary of the Museum, officials  are hosting a literary contest “Memorias de Una Isla” Our island’s museum covers so many different aspects of what makes Cozumel unique.  There are displays on our unique ecosystems, an exact copy of a traditional mayan home, and of course, art exhibitions, art classes, concerts and even a theatre.  The building the museum is housed in was inaugurated in 1936 and was originally one of the island’s most elegant hotels.  For more information on the Museo or, the contest, follow their facebook page.

Voluntarios en el Aeropuerto para la Cruz Roja - Si está usted pasando el invierno en Cozumel y gustaría ayudar a la comunidad de la Isla, he aquí una gran oportunidad. Sólo se requiere donar tres horas de su tiempo a la semana en la sala de salidas del Aeropuerto solicitando donativos para la Cruz Roja de Cozumel. En general, el Grupo del Aeropuerto estará activo durante diez semanas este invierno; a partir de mediados del mes de enero y hasta finales de marzo. El viernes 10 de enero el grupo tramitará los formatos de distintivos de seguridad; sin embargo, en caso de llegar más tarde también se le puede brindar apoyo de acuerdo a su disponibilidad de hrarop.
