Cozumel Carnaval 2013 Officially Starts This Weekend

To some island visitors Carnaval is simply the three big parade nights, scheduled this year for Saturday, February 9th, Sunday February 10th and Tuesday February 12th.   However, for many island residents the events leading up to the parades are just as much fun!  In fact, the Carnaval 2013 events begin this Saturday, January 12th when the official King and Queen candidates are presented.  Other exciting pre-carnaval events include the campaign, dances and selection of the royal candidates, the Ladies Show, and the headlining concerts and entertainment.

Para algunos visitantes el Carnaval son sólo tres noches de grandiosos desfiles que han sido programados este año para el sábado 9 de febrero, domingo 10 de febrero y martes 12 de febrero. Sin embargo, para muchos habitantes de la Isla los eventos que se llevan a cabo hasta el momento de los desfiles, ¡son muy divertidos! De hecho, los eventos del Carnaval 2013 comenzarán este sábado 12 de enero cuando se presenta a los candidatos oficiales para Rey y Reina. Otros eventos emocionantes del pre-carnaval incluyen la campaña, los bailes y la selección de los candidatos reales, el Ladies Show y los conciertos y espectáculos titulares.

Tip the Island Beach Party/Beach Clean-Up

What is Tip the Island?  If we get enough people on the east side, can we TIP THE ISLAND? Let's find out! The second annual Tip the Island Beach Party/Beach Clean-Up has been scheduled for Monday, February 11th, 11:00am-4:00pm at San Martin beach across from El Diablo. Come enjoy a day on the WILD SIDE, meet and greet with expats, locals, frequent visitors and first timers. Bring at least one large heavy duty garbage bag to fill with beach trash. Each bag is added to The Trashy Little Group's yearly bag count, which is a great way to give back to the island we all know and love! The bar hop bus is secured for those who do not want to drive.  A headcount is needed prior to the party which will determine how much per person.

Pack your cooler with beverages and snacks. Bring your beach accessories and games! Food and drink also available from El Diablo.  The Trashy Little Group would like to schedule their monthly event in conjunction with Tip the Island so there will be a beach clean-up 9:30-10:30 on February 11th, lat Playa Bonita.  Someone will scout out where to clean up, they like it ReALLy TrASHy!  Stay tuned for details!

Tip the Island, Fiesta en la playa/Limpieza de la playa

¿Qué es Tip the Island (Inclinando la Isla)? Si logramos reunir suficiente gente en el lado oriente, ¿podríamos inclinar la Isla (Tip the Island)? ¡Averigüémoslo! La segunda Fiesta Anual de Playa de Tip the Island/Limpieza de la playa ha sido programada para el lunes 11 de febrero de 11:00 a.m. a 4:00 p.m. en Playa San Martín, frente a El Diablo. Vengan a disfrutar de un día en el EXTREMO SALVAJE, conozcan y saluden a los expatriados, a los lugareños, a visitantes frecuentes y a los primerizos. Lleven por lo menos una bolsa grande y gruesa para llenarla con basura de la playa. Cada una de las bolsas se agregará al conteo anual del grupo Trashy Little, lo que es una gran forma para corresponder a la Isla que todos conocemos y queremos! Se ha asegurado un autobús para aquellos que no desean conducir. Es necesario hacer un recuento antes de la fiesta cuántas personas para determinar el costo por persona.
Empaquen sus hieleras con bebidas y aperitivos. ¡Traigan consigo accesorios y juegos de playa! También hay alimentos y bebidas en El Diablo. Al grupo Trashy Little le gustaría programar su evento mensual en conjunto con el de Tip the Island por lo que habrá una limpieza de playa de 9:30 a 10:30 el 11 de febrero, el sitio aún está pendiente por determinarse. Alguien irá a explorar el lugar que se va a limpiar, ¡les gusta muy sucio! ¡Manténganse atentos para mayores detalles!  

Honoring Traditions: "Las Cabañuelas," Mayan Weather Predictions

The ancient Mayans are revered for their knowledge of astronomy, however, they have also left behind another gift, the tradition of  “Las Cabañuelas,”   which has survived over 500 years.    According to tradition, the first twelve days of the year represent the weather for the each month in the year (January 1st = January; January 2 = February, and so on). When reaching January 13, it goes the other way around, this is, January 13 is December, January 14 is November, and so on. This cycle ends on January 24th, hereafter each remaining day represents two months, morning being one month, in this case January, and afternoon representing February.  Then, on the 31st day of January, the 24 hours in the day represent one month starting at 01:00 am until noon (December) and then going backwards again.   

The Mayans, and later the Spaniards, used this system to predict the weather, with January being the month that forecasted the rest of the year.  A Franciscan monk traveling with Christopher Columbus, wrote: “Through their gods and observations on the first days of the year, the natives know which days will be good and which will be bad, which will be rainy and which will be dry”.  According to a very knowledgeable local historian, who has for many years, been tracking the weather using this system, has found it to still be relatively accurate.  For more information on this interesting Mayan Tradition, and how the weather can be predicted, check out the following links.   Here and here.

Honrando tradiciones: "Las Cabañuelas", pronósticos mayas sobre el clima

Los antiguos mayas son admirados por sus conocimientos en astronomía, sin embargo, también nos legaron otro obsequio: la tradición de “Las Cabañuelas” que ha sobrevivido más de 500 años. De acuerdo a la tradición, los primeros doce días del años representan el clima que prevalecerá durante cada mes del año (el 1º de enero equivale al mes de enero; el 2 de enero al mes de febrero, etc.). Al llegar a día 13 de enero, el conteo retrocede siendo entonces que el día 13 de enero representa al mes de diciembre, el 14 de enero al mes de noviembre y así sucesivamente.  Este ciclo con concluye el día 31 de enero y las 24 horas del día representan un mes del año, iniciando a la 01:00 a.m. y al llegar al mediodía (diciembre), retrocede el conteo nuevamente. 

Los mayas y, posteriormente los españoles, utilizaron este sistema para predecir el clima, siendo que el mes de enero pronosticaba el clima para el resto del año. Un monje franciscano que viajaba con Cristóbal Colón escribió: “Saben estos indios por su consultas a sus dioses y su observación de los primeros días del año cuáles serán buenos y cuáles serán malos, cuáles pluviosos y cuáles secos”. De acuerdo a un sabio historiador local que durante años ha analizado el clima utilizando este sistema, ha encontrado que es relativamente exacto. Director of Tourism: Ironman Secured

Cozumel’s Director of Tourism, Emilio Villanueva Sosa, was recently quoted as saying that the ironman will most likely become a permanent Cozumel event.  Although the 5 year contract is set to expire next year, reports from the Ironman organizers have been so positive that it’s anticipated that the Ironman will become yearly event for the island.

El Director de Turismo en Cozumel, Emilio Villanueva Sosa, fue citado recientemente, diciendo que lo más probable es que el Ironman se convierta en un evento permanente en Cozumel. A pesar de que el contrato a 5 años está a punto de concluir el próximo año, los organizadores de Ironman reportan que los eventos han sido tan positivos que se prevé que Ironman se convierta en un acontecimiento anual para la Isla.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Hera is an adorable 1 and 1/2 year old female dog. She was found lost December 27th, 2012 just north of the Sedena Super Market on the Malecon. She is an extremely loving, affectionate playful dog and would make a wonderful family pet! 

Poor Tito!!!! He is 9 months old, beautiful seal point siamese. His family dumped him as they were mad that he would jump on kitchen counters going after food. Rather than train him or listen to any advice, such as try neutering him to help with behavior, they said if we did not take him they were going to throw him out in the street. He is very, very sad right now in quarantine and he is crying. We are absolutely maxed out for space currently. Cat adoptions, particularly of black cats are DESPERATELY NEEDED. We cannot help anymore cats in need unless some adoptions come through quickly. Please also remember to come by on Saturdays for kitten cuddling. Our cats love the attention. All welcome to attend 11 am onward.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Hera es una perra adorable de 1 ½ años. Se le encontró, extraviada, el 27 de diciembre del 2012, justo al norte del supermercado Sedena, en el malecón. ¡Es sumamente cariñosa, juguetona y sería una maravillosa mascota para una familia!

¡¡Pobre Tito!! Tiene 9 meses de edad y es un hermoso gato con sello siamés. Su familia se deshizo de él pues estaban enojados ya que saltaba sobre los anaqueles de cocina para obtener comida. En lugar de entrenarlo o escuchar cualquier otro consejo, tal como tratar de castrarlo para ayudarle a su comportamiento, dijeron que si no lo recibíamos lo echarían a la calle. Esta sumamente triste en este periodo de cuarentena y está llorando. En estos momentos nos encontramos al máximo total de espacio. SE NECESITAN DESESPERADAMENTE adopciones de gatos, sobretodo de gatos negros. Ya no nos es posible continuar ayudando a más gatos a menos que nos lleguen solicitudes de adopción a la brevedad posible. También recuerden venir los días sábado para acurrucar a los gatitos. A nuestros gatos les encantan las atenciones. Todos ustedes son bienvenidos a partir de las 11 a.m. en adelante.

CAMAR Reports 640 Tons of Cozumel Recycling for 2012

Cozumel’s Centro de Acopio de Materiales Reciclables (CAMAR) recently reported that 640 tons of waste was recycled from the island in 2012.  Of that waste, the largest amount was 476 tons of cardboard. 

During certain periods of the year, CAMAR working alongside city officials permits the collection of large waste, such as household appliances, or currently, your old Christmas tree.  In fact, Christmas trees are currently being accepted in the Environmental Park, loced on Av. 65 and c. 31 in Colonia Marvilla.

El Centro de Acopio de Materiales Reciclables (CAMAR) de Cozumel en fechas recientes reportó que 640 toneladas de deshechos fueron reciclados de la Isla en el año 2012. De esos desechos la mayor cantidad fue 476 toneladas de cartón.

Durante algunos periodos durante el año CAMAR, en conjunto con autoridades municipales, permite la recoja de deshechos de gran tamaño, como lo son los electrodomésticos o, en la actualidad, su viejo árbol de Navidad. De hecho, los árboles de Navidad están siendo aceptados en el Parque Ambiental ubicado en la Ave. 65 y Calle 31 en la Colonia Maravilla.
