Cozumel Experiences Low Temperatures
2010 arrived with a series of cold fronts that have brought very cold weather to Cozumel and the Yucatan peninsula. Here in Cozumel temperatures have gone as low as the 50s F(10C), while some parts of the Yucatan have reported lows of 32F (0 C) In addition, high winds have caused port closures, including suspension of scuba diving and other watersports activities for 3 days this week. The car ferry, which also delivers all of Cozumel’s supplies, resumed activity on Tuesday after a three day hiatus in services. Luckily, the prognosis calls for an end to the cold fronts, and more normal temperatures returning shortly.
2010 llegó con una serie de frentes fríos, que han traído mucho frío a Cozumel y a la Península de Yucatán. Aquí en Cozumel las temperaturas han ido tan bajas como los 50 F(10C), mientras que algunas partes de Yucatán han informado temperaturas bajas de 32F (0 C) Además, fuertes vientos han causado cierres de puerto, incluyendo la suspensión de buceo y otras actividades de deportes acuáticos durante 3 días esta semana. Cruise Ship Overnights in Cozumel
Adverse weather conditions kept the Celebrity Cruise Lines’ “Century” in port Monday. Over 4,500 passengers and crew, were able to experience extra time in Cozumel. This is the first time a cruise ship has been forced to overnight on the island. Some tour operators and municipal authorities are viewing this in a positive light, since it’s been proposed for years that cruise ships overnight here, and strong winds have inadvertently created a test case.
Por las Condiciones climáticas adversas se mantuvo el Celebrity Cruise Lines "Century" en puerto el Lunes. Más de 4.500 pasajeros y la tripulación, fueron capaces de disfrutar más tiempo en Cozumel. The Agape IV - A Sad Tale
The Agape IV, a fishing boat registered in the U.S, arrived in Cozumel last week with some notoriety, when it failed to give way to a cruise ship as it came into port. Since then, the father and son crew have had a remarkable series of misfortunes and accidents. Bad luck continued during a trip to shore, when they discovered that someone had stolen the 7 hp Mercury engine off their dingy, making it impossible to return to their boat quickly. Stranded on shore, they could only watch as the Agape slipped her anchor and beached herself in the shallows in front of the Malecon. Local authorities assisted them back to a more secure location, where they attempted to repair the damage to their hull and engine. Sunday, they again came ashore, when rough seas tore the 3 inch lines they used to secure the Agape, again driving her into shore, and further damaging her hull. Again, local dive operators and authorities assisted the stranded boat back to safe anchorage, where the crew once again is attempting repairs, so that they can return home. El Agape IV, un barco de pesca registrado en los Estados Unidos, llego a Cozumel la semana pasada con cierta notoriedad, cuando no cedió el paso a un crucero, como sucedió en puerto. Desde entonces, la tripulación del padre e hijo han tenido una notable serie de desgracias y accidentes .La mala suerte continuó, durante un viaje para ir por provisiones al pueblo, cuando descubrieron que alguien había robado el motor de Mercury 7hp de su dingy, haciendo imposible volver rápidamente a su barco. Varado en la costa, sólo podrían ver como el Agapé se deslizó su ancla y por consiguiente se varo en la orilla cerca del Malecón. Las autoridades locales les ayudado a permanecer en un lugar más seguro, donde intentaron reparar el daño a su casco y motor. El Domingo, se encalló otra vez, cuando el mar con marejada rompió las líneas de 3 pulgadas que se usaron para asegurar el Agape, una vez más, termino en la orilla, dañando aún más su casco. Una vez más, los operadores de buceo local y las autoridades asistieron al barco varado para hacer reparaciones de anclaje, donde, ayudando a la tripulación para reparar y que puedan volver a casa. Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Kiriaki & Magoo
Kuriaki is a 2 year old male, beautiful border collie mix. He was found wandering along the main road that leads to the airport from the Malecon. Often times dogs are abandoned by their owners in and around this area and many have been found lost and bewildered wandering the main road to the airport trying to find their way home. Kuriaki is just one of these dogs. A concerned citizen stopped in the pouring rain and rescued him after he spent a number of days frantically running up and down this road, and brought him to the Humane Society. He has now been at the shelter since September 19th, 2009. Kuriaki is a very handsome dog, with beautiful colorings, likes to play with all the other dogs and is well socialized. We are hopeful that he will find a new home soon.
We currently have several dogs that have been with us for more than 6 months awaiting adoption. More continue to be brought in than are adopted. Once again the Humane Society is critically full and miracles are badly needed. If you are thinking about adopting locally or abroad, please contact us or come visit the shelter as soon as possible. Please be a responsible pet owner: spay and neuter your pets! The Humane Society offers this service for free, just call our clinic to make an appointment: 987 112 3376. Together with the help of the community we hope that one day Cozumel will have no more unwanted pets wandering our streets, filling the shelter and the animal control center where many are put to death each year. Please also consider adopting and not buying pets, as this perpetuates the problem and contributes to extermination of many, many dogs a year. It is not necessary to buy when there is a shelter full of adoptable animals, including pure breeds, waiting for homes.
Our kitten of the week is a sweet 8 week old male kitten named Magoo. Magoo was rescued by one of our favorite foster Mom's: Carol McCutcheon. She could hear Magoo crying and crying, lost from his mother. When she finally located him in her garden, he ran like the devil at the sight of her. She coaxed and coaxed with food, but eventually Carol was able to trap Magoo with one of the Humane Society's live cat traps. After keeping Magoo in her Bodega for a few days and working with him he was soon able to be handled and rewarded Carol with loud purring. Currently Magoo is a permanent resident in Carol's spacious bathroom and he is an extremely loving, playful cat. Carol is very much hoping for a forever home where he will either be an indoor cat or indoor/outdoor cat. Magoo is a priority adoption, as we need our foster mom's such as Carol, to be available to help other animals in need. Kuriaki es un macho de 2 años, hermoso mezcla de collie de frontera. Fue hallado vagando a lo largo de las principales carreteras que conducen al aeropuerto hasta el malecón. A menudo los perros son abandonados por sus propietarios y alrededor de esta zona y muchos se han encontrado y desorientados vagando por la carretera principal hacia el aeropuerto tratando de encontrar su camino a casa. Kuriaki es sólo uno de estos perros. Un ciudadano se detuvo en la lluvia y lo rescató, después pasó varios días buscando a sus dueños de arriba y abajo en este camino lo cual fue inútil llevando a este perro a la Sociedad Humanitaria de animales. Ha estado en el refugio desde el 19 de Septiembre de 2009. Kuriaki es un perro muy guapo, con hermosos colores, le gusta jugar con todos los otros perros y es muy sociable. Confiamos que encontrará un nuevo hogar pronto.
Actualmente tenemos varios perros que han estado con nosotros durante más de 6 meses. A la espera de la adopción. Esperando que los adopten rápidamente. Otra vez la Sociedad Humanitaria está llena y esperamos unos milagros prontos de adopción. También considere adoptar y no comprar animales, ya que persiste el problema y contribuye a la exterminación de muchos, muchos perros al año. No es necesario comprar cuando hay un refugio lleno de animales para adoptar, incluyendo razas puras, esperando hogares.
Nuestro gatito de la semana es un gatito de 8 semanas de edad, dulce llamado Magoo. Magoo fue rescatado por uno de nuestra favorita mamás: Carol McCutcheon. Ella podía oír Magoo gritando y llorando, perdió a su madre. Cuando ella finalmente ubico en su jardín, corrió a atraparlo. Ella dio comida, pero finalmente fue capaz de atrapar a Magoo con una trampa del la Sociedad Humanitaria. Después que mantener Magoo en su bodega durante unos días y trabajar con él, pronto fue capaz de ser domesticado y así poderlo manejarlo. Actualmente Magoo es residente permanente en baño grande de Carol, es un gato muy cariñoso y juguetón. Carol está esperando un casa que adopten a Magoo. Magoo es una adopción de prioridad, Carol como madre adoptiva, está disponible para ayudar a los animales necesitados. Red Cross Casino Night
The Cozumel Cruz Roja is hosting their 3rd annual Casino Night on Friday, February 5th, at the Hotel El Cid La Ceiba. Tickets are $500 mn each and include a welcome drink, appetizers and $1000 mn in playing money. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and features games such as blackjack, Texas Hold Em, and roulette. January 23rd - International Yoga Day Events
January 23rd is International Yoga Day and local Yoga teachers have been working together to create a comprehensive schedule to commemorate the event, that allows participants to try yoga in it’s many different forms. The events will take place all over the island, including, the beach on the other side of the island, the Cozumel Country Club, The Garden of Chakras, and even Cozumel Scuba Repair. Diverse types of Yoga classes will be offered including Kundalini, Pilates, Pranayama, Yoga for Kids and even Yoga for Divers and a symposium on Kite/Windsurfing and Yoga. Gaby Pineda, who is running for Carnaval Queen 2010, and was on hand at last week’s happy hour to meet and greet. As Carnaval approaches, she and her comparsa of over 60 people, will be making a series of public appearances, dances and fundraisers. This upcoming Friday, starting at 10 p.m. Gaby is hosting “Gran Pachanga Carnavalera” at Señor Frogs. Entrance fee is only $80 mn and includes one beer.
