Cozumel Prevention Efforts Pay Off, Island Currently Dengue Free

The risks of Dengue Fever in the tropics are generally increased in September, October and November; however, recent heavy rains have apparently accelerated conditions, since, Cozumel is currently the only municipality in the entire state who can claim to currently be Dengue free.  City officials have stepped up fumigation and efforts to control Aedes Aegypt, the mosquito who carries the hemorrhagic fever, including a public awareness campaign about the mosquito and it’s preferred breeding grounds, which include bodies of stagnant water.  Although the Secretary of Health for Quintana Roo has reported that our island is at risk for Dengue, our prevention efforts apparently are paying off, since last year only two cases of Dengue were reported on the entire island.

Norwegian Cruise Lines "Epic" to Call Into Cozumel

Next week marks the first time the Norwegian Cruise Lines newest ship, the “Epic” will call into Cozumel.  The “Epic” has a capacity of 4,100 passengers and crew, weighs 155,873 tons, and is actually bigger than the RCCL “Oasis of the Seas,” which until now, was the largest ship to call into Cozumel.  The “Epic” is scheduled to call into the International pier around 10:30 am on the 29th of July.  The “Epic” offers urban style shopping areas, private villas and even has 14 different restaurants.

La próxima semana será la primera vez que el barco más reciente de Norwegian Cruise Lines, llamado  "Epic" que llegara a Cozumel. "Epic" tiene una capacidad de 4.100 pasajeros y la tripulación, pesa 155,873 toneladas y es realmente más grande que el RCCL "Oasis of the Seas," que hasta ahora, era el barco más grande que atraco en  Cozumel. "Epic" está prevista su llegada en el muelle internacional alrededor de 10:30 am el 29 de julio. El “Epic” ofrece áreas de compras de estilo urbano, villas privadas y  tiene 14 restaurantes diferentes.

July Rains Bring Blue Crab Migration

The endangered blue crab migration is one of the most beautiful and unique shows that can be seen on island during the rainy times in July.  Blue crabs live in humid coastal dunes, mangrove thickets, cattail marshes, flooded lowlands and on the banks of rivers and swamps.  During the breeding season, thousands of females leave their natural habitat, heading to the beaches to spawn.  In Cozumel every year locals and visitors come together to help the real “cozumelenos” complete their reproductive cycle by forming rescue teams to assist the females in crossing the road, and by just driving carefully and respectfully during this time. 

La migración del cangrejo azul, que está en peligro de extinción, es uno de los espectáculos más hermosos y únicos que pueden verse en la isla durante la época de lluvias en el mes de julio. Los cangrejos azules viven en dunas costeras húmedas, matorrales de manglares, marismas, tierras bajas inundadas y en las orillas de los ríos y pantanos. Durante la temporada de cría, miles de hembras dejan su hábitat natural, rumbo a las playas para desovar. En Cozumel cada año los lugareños y visitantes vienen juntos para ayudar a la verdadera migración "cozumeleña" a completar su ciclo reproductivo mediante la formación de equipos de rescate para ayudar a las hembras en el cruce de la carretera y por sólo conducir cuidadosamente y respetuosamente durante este tiempo.

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" - by Monica Velasco

This little kitten was found, barely 3 weeks old, all alone and crying in Corpus Christi park at 9:30 pm on June 18th. He had a bad scrape and missing patch of fur on his back. Momcat nowhere to be found. A neighbor called Ecologia,who tried to reach the Humane Society but it was closed. He came knocking at Sheryl Shea's door at 10pm to see if she could take the wee baby in. He is all better now and cute as a button! Sheryl would love to to have Mango go to a loving home ASAP because she's leaving the island today!!

Burra the smiley dump dog is moving to her new home, her first real home, in California. Some dogs are just luckier than others, and Burra turned out to really score family-wise. The family that adopted her has a beautiful Spanish home next to a canyon, which will be a much improved version of the open waste lands where she lived with Gabacho.  More than that, this is a dog that was rejected from a family or home, at least once, and then evicted from the dump. And now there is a wonderful couple who was willing to pay for her to be shipped all the way to California to them. This couple had adopted another Mexican dog named Teresita from a border town, who lived happily with them and eventually died. She was also a smiler and also stood on her hind legs to greet them. Now it is our Burra's time, and she will keep smiling.

Cozumel 4 You Launches New Webpage & Newsletter

In case you haven’t noticed, Cozumel 4 You’s webletter has a brand new image, and over the weekend we'll be launching our new webpage which features an on-line Cozumel community, a new incorporated blog with member comments, a lot of bright new graphics, online photo galleries, Cozumel weather, an interactive events calendar, and even online sign-up for our mailing list.  Working again with Aramaa Design, we were able to create a design that not only met our new goals and priorities, but also was much more user friendly.  The new webpage was created in Joomla, a design platform that easily manages every aspect of a website, from adding content and images to building an online community. Aramaa Design and Cozumel 4 You have also created other webpages on the island such as the Flash website for Leo the Spearfisherman , and the HTML website for Blu Bambu Salon. 

Once our goals were established, and the original design selected, the entire process took about a week.  Best of all, since the page is so flexible, it can be updated weekly.  To find out more about creating a custom webpage that works for you and your business contact lisarae@aramaadesign.com

En caso de que usted no ha notado, Cozumel 4 You’s Webletter (boletín semanal) tiene una nueva imagen y durante el fin de semana, vamos a iniciar una página web nueva, con una communidad cozumeleña en red, un nuevo blog incorporado con comentarios de sus miembros, un montón de brillantes nuevos gráficos, galerías de fotos en línea, el clima de Cozumel, un calendario de eventos interactivos e inclusouna línea de suscripción de nuestra publicación. Trabajando de nuevo con Aramaa Design, fuimos capaces de crear un diseño que no sólo es conoció para nuestras nuevas metas y prioridades, lo cual también es mucho más amigable para el usuario. La nueva página web se creó en Joomla, una plataforma de diseño que administra fácilmente todos los aspectos de un sitio web, para agregar contenido e imágenes a la construcción de una comunidad en línea. Aramaa Design y Cozumel 4 You también han creado otras páginas web en la isla, como el sitio Flash para Leo el Spearfisherman y el sitio web de HTML para Blu Bambu salón.

Happy Birthday to "Parque Nacional de Arrecifes de Cozumel"

The “Parque Nacional de Arrecifes de Cozumel” is celebrating their 14th year in operation, since the founding on July 19th, 1996.  It’s estimated that 1,500 divers a day visit the island’s reef system, which is home to over 285 species of fish. Worried About Safety in Mexico? Let's Get Some Perspective

Recently the U.S. State Department has issued a series of travel advisories for U.S. residents intending to travel to Mexico, due to an increase in drug related violence.  Since then Cozumel residents and island aficionados have been flooded with questions as to the safety of the island.  Writing for the Miami Herald, Andres Oppenheimer, has written a comprehensive article highlighting how many of these claims are, in fact, inflammatory.  According to the article, a visit to Washington D.C. has more danger, and the island of Jamaica has a murder rate five times that of all of Mexico.  Please check out the article, and share it with your friends, so we can get some perspective on these exaggerated claims. 

Recientemente el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos ha emitido una serie de avisos de viaje para residentes de E.E.U. con la intención de viajar a México, debido a un aumento de la violencia, drogas. Desde entonces, los residentes de Cozumel y aficionados de la isla han sido inundados con preguntas en cuanto a la seguridad de la isla. Escribir para el Miami Herald, Andrés Oppenheimer, ha escrito un artículo completo destacando en cuántas de estas reclamaciones son, de hecho, ciertas. Según el artículo, una visita a Washington tiene más peligro la isla de Jamaica en cuestión de asesinato con una tasa cinco veces mayor  que todo México. Por favor, checa el artículo y compártelo con tus amigos, por lo que podemos obtener cierta perspectiva sobre estas afirmaciones.

Cozumel's Bicycle League Gets a Helping Hand from U.S. Bike Clubs

Cozumel is famous for our coral reefs and warm hospitality, however, recently the island is becoming just as appreciated for its great training opportunities for cyclists, runners and even triathlon athletes.  In fact, even before the Ironman came to Cozumel, residents have been taking advantage of the flat topography, relatively little traffic and natural beauty to train.  Cozumel’s local bicycle league, which has approximately 50 members, boasts both state and national champions.  Ironically enough, since their league is relatively informal, they don’t have sponsors, either from the public or private sector, yet they continue to have several competitions a year. 
Bike parts, helmets, gloves, and shoes are hard to come by on island, and oftentimes triple the price of other locations.  One civic minded couple, Barbara and Brian, saw the need, and collected gently used gear from two Utah-based clubs, Bonaville Cycling Club and Wasatch Mountain Club. Together they managed to amass 42 pounds of much appreciated donations for the Cozumel Club. 

If you’re a cyclist and are interested in training while here on the island, please contact Manuel, at shisha792003@yahoo.com, he speaks English and is more than willing to coordinate training here on the island.  Manuel trains 5 times a week, and has even completed a lap around the island in 1 hour 21 minutes (which is about 25-26 miles/hour!)

Cozumel es famoso por nuestros arrecifes de coral y la cálida hospitalidad, sin embargo, recientemente la isla se está convirtiendo en tan apreciado porque esta por dar oportunidades de gran formación para ciclistas, corredores y incluso a los atletas de triatlón. De hecho, incluso antes de que el Ironman llegó a Cozumel, los residentes han ido tomando ventaja de la topografía plana, relativamente poco tráfico y belleza natural para entrenar. La Liga local de Bicicleta de Cozumel, que tiene aproximadamente 50 miembros, cuenta con estatus y campeones nacionales. Irónicamente, puesto que su liga es relativamente informal, no tienen patrocinadores, ya sea desde el sector público o privado, se tienen aún varios concursos anuales.

Las partes de bicicleta, cascos, guantes y zapatos son difíciles de conseguir en  la isla y con frecuencia con el triple del precio que otros lugares. Una pareja con mentalidad cívica, Bárbara y Brian, vio la necesidad de conseguir nuevos materiales usados de dos clubes en el estado de Utah, el club de ciclismo de Bonaville y el club de montaña de Wasatch. Juntos se las arreglaron para acumular 42 libras de equipo  que  agradecen las donaciones para el club de Cozumel.

Manuel entrena 5 veces a la semana e incluso ha completado una vuelta alrededor de la isla en 1 hora 21 minutos (que es de alrededor de 25-26 millas/hora!)
