Invest 96L Visits Cozumel Bringing Heavy Rain

It’s only early July however, Cozumel has already been visited with two tropical systems, most recently Invest 96L, also known as Tropical Wave Number 12.  Invest 96L arrived with over 65 cm of rain on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  The Port was also closed on Tuesday for boats less than 12 meters due to high winds and rough seas.  The increase in tropical storm activity has been attributed to higher than average temperatures.  Luckily Cozumel officials are responsive and prepared for this phenomenon, this week over 15,000 brochures, were distributed with the cooperation of the Mayor’s office, the Fire Department and the Civil Protection Services.  The informative brochure contains information about our island’s early warning system, things to do in the event of an impending hurricane, and what do after a storm passes.

Sin embargo es principio de julio y Cozumel ya ha sido visitado con dos sistemas tropicales, el más recientemente Invest 96L, también conocido como la Ola Tropical número 12. Invest 96L llegó con más de 65 cm de lluvia el domingo, el lunes y el martes. El puerto también se cerró el martes para embarcaciones menos de 12 metros debido, a los fuertes vientos y la fuerte marejada. El aumento en la actividad de la tormenta tropical ha sido atribuido al aumento de las temperaturas. Afortunadamente Cozumel y sus funcionarios responden y se prepararon para este fenómeno, esta semana más de 15.000 folletos fueron distribuidos, con la cooperación de la Oficina del alcalde, el departamento de bomberos y los servicios de protección civil. El folleto informativo contiene información sobre el sistema de alerta  de nuestra isla, y así saber qué hacer en caso de un huracán inminente, y qué hacer después de que una tormenta pasó.

Cozumel Readies for Summer Tourism with Increased Traffic Vigilance

The Secretary of the Infrastructure & Transportation (Sintra) of Cozumel has announced that during the summer tourism season that there will be an increase in vigilance on Cozumel’s highways, specifically geared toward taxis and other forms of ground transportation.   Municipal officials will be watching for transportation carrying more passengers than permitted, taxis who do not have proper circulation papers or are carrying materials, such as alcohol, gasoline and other substances that might put passengers and other motorists at risk.  According to the Assistant Director of Sintra, non-compliance with current regulations can result in fines starting at 10 days of the current minimum wage and up.

El Secretario de infraestructura y Transporte (Sintra) de Cozumel ha anunciado que durante la temporada de verano, el turismo tendrá vigilancia en las carreteras de Cozumel, específicamente orientada hacia los taxis y otras formas de transporte terrestre. Observarán los funcionarios municipales que el transporte de pasajeros no exceda su capacidad dentro de lo permitido, los taxis y otros que no tengan documentos de circulación adecuada o que estén llevando a cabo materiales, tales como  alcohol, gasolina y otras sustancias que podrían poner en riesgo a los pasajeros y a otros conductores. Según el Subdirector de Sintra, el incumplimiento de la normativa vigente puede resultar en multas empezando por 10 días del salario mínimo  o hasta multas mayores.

Cozumel Election Results

Elections for Governor of Quintana Roo, President (Mayor) of Cozumel and Diputado (Representative) of District VIII were held last Sunday, July 4th.   Congratulations to Cozumel natives Roberto Borge, who secured the seat for Governor, and Aurelio Joaquin who has won the Presidental seat, and Freddy Marrufo, who will be the new Diputado for our District. 

Las elecciones para gobernador de Quintana Roo, Presidente de Cozumel y Diputado del distrito VIII se celebraron el pasado domingo, 4 de julio. Felicidades a los Cozumeleños Roberto Borge, quien aseguró el asiento para gobernador, y Aurelio Joaquín, que ha ganado la sede presidencial, y Freddy Marrufo, quien será el nuevo Diputado de nuestro distrito.

Humane Society Story of the Week - Maxwell & Didi the Rabbit - by Monica Velasco

Maxwell was spotted several weeks ago by Diego, a friend of the humane society. This happy low-rider dog liked hanging out at the Corpus Christi park, looking for other dogs to play with. He would have seemed to have had an owner because his visits to the park were intermittent; however, he didn’t look to be well cared for.  Concerned about Maxwell after weeks of watching him and noticing he was losing weight -and knowing that we are packed to the gills at the shelter-, Diego took him home while we find him a good family. We need your help for that! Maxwell is young, maybe 1 or 2 years old, super friendly and playful.

A Maxwell lo encontró Diego, un amigo de la Sociedad Humanitaria. Este chaparrón se la pasaba en el parque de la Corpus Cristi, buscando otros perros con quienes jugar. Parecería que Maxwell hubiera tenido dueño porque sus visitas al parque eran intermitentes, sin embargo, no se veía bien cuidado. Después de observarlo varias semanas y preocupado al notar que estaba poniendose flaco, Diego lo llevó a su casa para protegerlo y cuidarlo mientras le encontramos una buena casa. Ayudanos! Maxwell es joven, como de 1 ó 2 años, super amigable y muy juguetón.

Hello! My name is Didi and I am a well-loved girl rabbit. Four years ago, my parents rescued me from a market of agricultural products in Mexico City, where my destiny would have been to have my skin turned into a hat, or a bag, or a stuffed toy. With my family I have been very happy, especially since we moved to Cozumel 2 years ago. This is the first time that we have a yard! Plus, I am very well adapted to this weather now. Well, now my family has to move to Australia! and although they do want to take me with them, the country’s sanitary restrictions make it impossible. This is why they are looking for a GOOD home for me here, in Cozumel, where I feel great. Durante este tiempo he sido muy felíz con mi familia, y más todavía desde que nos mudamos a Cozumel. ¡Es primera ves que tengo jardín! Y además me sentó muy bien este clima. Ahora mi familia se tiene que mudar a ¡Australia! y aunque me quieren llevar con ellos, las políticas sanitarias de ese país no lo permiten. Gay Parade Weekend Events

This upcoming Sunday, July 11th, starting at 4:30 pm members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community (LGBT) in Cozumel will be hosting their 3rd annual Gay Pride March.  The March will start at the Mestizaje monument (in front of SEDENA) and proceed down the Malecon, to the Convention Center. 

The parade is the culmination of a weekend of promotional events, which will be telecast, in part, by the television program “Guau,” which is syndicated in 50 countries throughout the world.  Media representatives will be recording, reporting and blogging about the island of Cozumel and our attractions world-wide. Already, media junkets have been planned at Chankanaab Park, Punta Sur, Playa Mia the Hotel Fontan, and the Museo de la Isla.

Este próximo domingo, 11 de julio, empezando a las 4:30 pm, miembros de la comunidad de lesbianas, gays, bisexuales y transexuales (LGBT) en Cozumel organizará su 3era marcha anual.  Marcha por la dignidad del orgullo gay. La marcha comenzará en el monumento de Mestizaje (enfrente SEDENA) y continúa hacia  el malecón, en el centro de convenciones.

El desfile es la culminación de un fin de semana de eventos promocionales, que será transmitido, en parte, por el programa de televisión "Guau", que está sindicado en 50 países en todo el mundo. Los representantes de medios de comunicación harán la grabación, reportando y haciendo blogs acerca de la isla de Cozumel y nuestras atracciones en todo el mundo. Tours Grupo de prensa los cuales han sido planeado en el Parque de Chankanaab, Punta Sur, Playa Mia, el Hotel Fontan y el Museo de la Isla.

Cozumel & Playa del Carmen Have Clean Beaches

Cozumel’s beaches have been given a clean bill of health by the “Coordination of Protection Against Sanitary Risks” (Coordinación de Protección Contra Riesgos Sanitarios),a department that carries out monthly tests to ensure that our beaches and oceans remain free of contaminants.  On the mainland, Yucatan Living is reporting that, Playa del Carmen was deemed to be one of Mexico’s cleanest beaches, with an even lower contamination rate of 10 enterococci per 100 ml of water. 

Las playas de Cozumel han dado un proyecto de ley limpia de la salud por la "Coordinación de Protección Contra Riesgos Sanitarios," un departamento que realiza pruebas mensuales para garantizar que nuestros océanos y playas quedan libres de contaminantes. En el continente, Yucatan Living está informando que, playa del Carmen se consideró que era una de las playas más limpias de México, con una tasa de contaminación aún menor de 10 enterococci por cada 100 ml de agua.

Car Ferry Schedule – Transcaribe, the company that runs the car ferry has announced a new schedule, which reduces service provided on Mondays.  The new schedule is Calica to Cozumel at 4am, 8am, 1:30pm and 6pm.
