Hurricane Season Officially Begins, Cozumel Municipality Prepared

June 1st marks the official start of Hurricane Season in the Caribbean, and although meteorologists are predicting a less active storm year the 2014 Municipal Hurricane Preparedness Committee took time out to meet with the Tourism Department.  Together both entities want to ensure that visitors to the island will receive updated impending storm information, as well as access to various consulates and embassies.  The general recommendation for tourists is to leave Cozumel and return to their point of origin before experiencing any storm impact.

Inicia oficialmente la temporada de huracanes y el Municipal de Cozumel se prepara

El 1º de junio marca el inicio oficial de la temporada de huracanes en el Caribe y a pesar de que los meteorólogos pronostican que el 2014 será un año menos activo, el Comité Municipal Operativo Especializado en Huracanes se reunió con la Secretaría de Turismo. Ambas entidades desean garantizar  que quienes visiten la Isla, reciben información actualizada de tormentas inminentes así como acceso a varios Consulados y Embajadas. La recomendación general para los turistas es la de retornar a su punto de origen antes de tener que vivir cualquier impacto de tormenta.

Airport Authorities Await New Twice Weekly Direct Flight From Chicago

According to the Cozumel International Airport administration, in a recent press conference, United Airlines will be implementing 2 Chicago flights per week during the summer.  The new flights, which will be on Saturdays and Sundays during the months of June and July, will help attract summer vacationers to Cozumel and our many family-friendly tourist attractions.

De acuerdo con la Administración del Aeropuerto Internacional de Cozumel, en reciente conferencia de prensa se informó que United Airlines implementará 2 vuelos de Chicago semanales durante el verano. Los vuelos nuevos serán los días sábado y los domingo durante los meses de junio y de julio, mismos que atraerán vacacionistas de verano a Cozumel y a nuestros numerosos atractivos turísticos para toda la familia.

For the third year in a row, Cozumel 4 You is proud to host this weekly series, which features island residents – written in their own words, describe how they came to call the island home and what they love about Cozumel.  Running from June – August, you can find the 2 prior years in our archives, 2013 & 2012.

Everyone has a story. Mine is a love story of the island. We were going to a hair show in Cancun and my friend suggested we get certified to scuba dive before we go. Took a crash course in 2 weeks and got certified 4 of us went to Cozumel for the day with just our bathing suits, shorts, tee-shirts, what little scuba gear we had, credit cards and cash. Loved diving so much we stayed for 3 days in a small little hotel for $25.00 a night. Didn’t want to go back to Cancun. Had to go buy tooth brush, tooth paste and tee-shirts. Didn’t care that we had  - no make-up or blow dryer -  for a hairdresser that is huge!   When I returned to Texas I got my 16 year old certified and brought him down the very next month. In August my youngest was old enough to get certified, so got him certified and brought him down, as well. I fell head over heels in love with Cozumel. The water, the warm weather the people and the culture.   I came 3 or 4 times a year to Cozumel. This is where I wanted to be. My friends and family thought I was crazy. Sold my house in Texas in 2001 and bought in Cozumel. Lived on a boat for 8 years during this time.  Was still coming down several times a year. Made the move 7 years ago.  Started volunteering at the Humane Society of Cozumel Island.  Got really involved in transporting animals that have been adopted to the states and Canada. Since then I opened Salon Cielo in June of 2012 and don’t have as much time for the HS. But I love my work, my home and my island!

Teresa Williams is the owner of Salon Cielo, a full service salon offering an array of service for both hair and nails.  Located in downtown Cozumel, a half block from the waterfront on Calle 7.

Cómo se convirtió Cozumel en mi hogar: Una serie escrita por habitantes de la Isla  por Teresa Williams, Salon Cielo

Por tercer año consecutivo, Cozumel 4 You se enorgullece en presentar esta serie semanal en la que aparece habitantes de la Isla, describiendo en sus propias palabras cómo es que la Isla se convirtió en su hogar y qué es lo que aman de Cozumel. Encontrarán los primeros 2 años de los meses junio a agosto en nuestros archivos 2013 y 2012.

Todos tienen una historia. La mía es una historia de amor con la Isla. Nos dirigíamos a Cancún a un evento de peinados y mi amiga sugirió que obtuviéramos nuestro certificado de buceo antes de regresar a nuestro país. Tomamos un curso intensivo de 2 semanas y 4 de nosotros obtuvimos la certificación, fuimos a Cozumel a pasar el día sólo con nuestros  trajes de baño, pantalones cortos, camisetas, y el escaso equipo de buceo que teníamos además de tarjetas de crédito y dinero en efectivo. Nos encanto tanto bucear que nos quedamos 3 días en un pequeño hotel de $25 dólares la noche. No queríamos regresar a Cancún. Tuvimos que comprar cepillo de dientes, pasta de dientes y camisetas. No importo que no tuviéramos nuestro maquillaje o secadora y, ¡para una peluquera eso es  grave! Cuando regresamos a Texas hice que mi hijo de 16 años obtuviera su certificación de buceo y lo traje a Cozumel al mes siguiente. Para Agosto el más pequeño de mis hijos ya tenía la edad suficiente para obtener la certificación así que también lo traje a Cozumel. Quedé perdidamente enamorada de Cozumel. El agua, el clima cálido la gente y la cultura. Regresé 3 a 4 veces al año a Cozumel. Aquí es donde yo quería estar. Mis amigos y mi familia pensaron que estaba loca. En el año 2001 vendí mi casa en Texas y adquirí algo en Cozumel. Durante ese tiempo viví 8 años en una embarcación. Continué  viniendo varias veces al año. Me mudé a Cozumel hace 7 años. Comencé como voluntaria de la Sociedad Humanitaria en la Isla Cozumel. Me comprometí mucho con los animales que han sido adoptados para ser transportados hacia los Estados Unidos y a Canadá. Desde entonces abrí  Salón Cielo en Junio del 2012 y ya no tengo mucho tiempo libre para la Sociedad Humanitaria. ¡Pero amo mi trabajo, mi hogar y mi Isla!

Teresa Williams es propietaria de Salón Cielo, ofrece una gran variedad de servicios para el cabello y para las uñas.   Se ubica en el centro de Cozumel, a media cuadra del malecón, en la Calle 7.

Humane Society Pets of the Week  by Janice Ramirez Castro

Bobosh, male 1.5 years old, weight 15 kg. Bobosh was running around having a great time at the Puerta Maya cruiseship pier. A security officer caught up with him and brought him to the humane society. He had nice collar but no name tag. Sadly nobody has come looking for this handsome boy! He is such a happy boy and loves to go for walks.Very smart Admission date: March 25, 2014

Matilda female 6 months old at admission. Please don't pay attenttion to her expression, she cannot help it, she was hit by a car. She was found near Moby Dick during a carnival event. So she was spayed and returned as cats are normally fed there regularly. But a few weeks later our vet Daniela found her heat exhausted and laying on the pavement so she brought her to the shelter, she also had a bad tooth causing her pain. She is now admitted to the shelter and up for adoption. Affectionate kitty and loves to be petted, and purrs when hold in arms. Admission date: March 14, 2014

Volunteer at the Big Free Spay and Neuter Campaign, and please spread the word. Free Spay and Neuter Campaign at Unidad Deportiva Revolucion in Colonia Emiliano Zapata, 95av. bis between 6 and 8 north, we'll be there from 9 to 5, Spay and neuter apointments at 98711226084 for 9, 11 and 13 hrs. We have campaign vets coming from all over Mexico, from very trustful asociations like Spay Mexico, Planned Pethood Merida, Coco's Cat Rescue, Gatos Pingos, and private vets that do spay and neuter campaigns in their hometowns, there are also US and Canadian volunteers that came to Cozumel for this campaign. Be aprt of the solution and give us a paw! Will be there june 4,5,7 and 8 only!

Volunteer at the shelter, it is so important for the dogs ad cats to get more individual attention, you can walk our dogs or play with the puppies and cats Monday to Saturday 11am to 1pm and 3pm to 4:30pm and Sundays 11am to 3pm children must come with a responsible grown up.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria por Janice Ramirez Castro

Bobosh – macho de 1.5 años de edad con un peso de 15 k. Bobosh corría por todos lados, divirtiéndose mucho en el muelle de cruceros de Puerta Maya. Un oficial de seguridad lo encontró y lo trajo a la Sociedad Humanitaria. Traía un buen collar pero sin la placa con su nombre. ¡Tristemente, nadie ha venido a buscar a este guapo muchacho! ¡Es un chico muy feliz y le encantan las caminatas! Es muy inteligente. Fecha de Admisión: Marzo 25, 2014

Matilda – hembra de 6 meses al momento de ser admitida. Por favor no le haga caso a su expresión; fue golpeada por un auto. Se le encontró cerca de Moby Dick durante un evento del Carnaval. Así que fue esterilizada y llevada de regreso ya que normalmente ahí los gatos son alimentados con regularidad. Pero unas semanas más tarde nuestra veterinaria, Daniela, la encontró agotada por el calor y tirada en el pavimento por lo que la trajo al refugio; también tenía un diente malo que le causaba dolor. Ya ha sido admitida en el refugio y ofrecida para su adopción. Es una gatita cariñosa a la que le encanta ser acariciada y ronronea cuando la cargan en brazos. Fecha de Admisión: Marzo 14, 2014

Ofrezcan ser voluntarios en la Gran Campaña Gratuita de Castración y Esterilización y, por favor, corran la voz. La Gran Campaña Gratuita de Castración y Esterilización será en la Unidad Deportiva Revolución de la colonia Emiliano Zapata, en 95 Avenida bis entre las calles 6 y 8 Norte; ahí estaremos de 9 a.m. a 5 p.m. Citas para la castración y esterilización de mascotas en: 987 1122 6084 a las 9, 11 y 13 hrs. Para la Campaña vendrán veterinarios de todo México, de asociaciones de confianza como Spay Mexico, Planned Pethood Mérida, Coco’s Cat Rescue, Gatos Pingos y veterinarios privados que hacen campañas de castración y esterilización en sus ciudades de origen. En esta campaña contaremos también con voluntarios procedentes de los E.U.A. y de Canadá. ¡Sean parte de la solución y dennos una pata!
¡Solamente estaremos ahí en los días 4, 5, 7 y 8 de junio!

Ustedes pueden sacar a nuestros perros a caminar o pueden jugar con cachorros y con los gatos de lunes a sábado de 11 a.m. a 1 p.m. y de 3 p.m. a 4:30 p.m, y los domingos de 11 a.m. a 3 p.m.; los niños deben venir con un adulto responsable. Por favor, seanparte de la solución: adopten, esterilicen/castren a su mascota, donen, cuiden a los animales que rescata (tráiganlos  para una revisión con el veterinario). Cozumel Turtle Season Update  by Biól. Lemuel Vega, Coordinador de M.I.A

In spite of heavy rains volunteers have now found and tagged over 73 Loggerhead (careta careta)  turtle nests.  So far, there haven’t been any green turtle (chelonian mydas) nests found. 

If you’re interested in signing up for a turtle tour there are two ways you can do this.  My offices are located inside the Municipal Department of Ecology, which is located on Av. 65 in the Centoe Park, just south of Moby Dick.  You can also send me an email at

Volunteer Wish List – We’re always in need of additional head lamp lights – with RED filters, batteries, gloves, fluorescent marking tape, black sharpies, GPS, walkie-talkies and rain gear.  If you have some additional space in your luggage please consider lending a helping hand.

We don’t have T-shirts available yet, since we’re waiting on the final approval but this year we’ll be printing a variety of materials including:  T-shirts, banners, magnets, & posters. I’ll let you know as soon as they are ready.  Remember that the profits from the sales of these items go directly to keep the sea turtles sustainable. 

Biól. Lemuel Vega, who is a Cozumel native,  is the Coordinator for  M.I.A (Environmental Impact)  and the Technical Manager  for Camp Tortuguero San Martín.  Throughout the 2014 Turtle Season he’ll be updating us as to the progress and as to how you can volunteer and assist.

Actualización de la temporada de la tortuga  por sel Biólogo Lemuel Vega, Coordinador de M.I.A

A pesar de las fuertes lluvias los voluntarios han encontrado y etiquetado más de 73 nidos de  caguamas (Careta careta). Hasta ahora no se han encontrado nidos de tortuga verde (mydas quelonio).

Si le interesa en inscribirse para visitar las tortugas, hay dos formas en que puede hacerlo. Mis oficinas se ubican dentro de la Dirección Municipal de Ecología, sobre la Ave. 65, en el Parque Cenote, al sur del Moby Dick. También puede enviarme un correo a Lemuelvega@gmail.com.

Lista de deseos de los voluntarios – Permanentemente necesitando lámparas adicionales para la cabeza, con filtros infrarrojos, baterías, guantes, cinta de marcar fluorescente, marcadores negros Sharpie, GPS, aparatos de comunicación y equipo para la lluvia.

Aún no tenemos camisetas disponibles pues estamos esperando la última aprobación, pero este año estaremos imprimiendo diversos materiales, incluyendo: camisetas, banderas, imanes y carteles. Les avisaré tan pronto estén listos. Recuerden que los beneficios de las ventas de estos artículos apoyan directamente que el programa de las tortugas sea sustentable. 

El Biólogo Lemuel Vega, originario de Cozumel, es el Coordinador para M.I.A.( Impacto Ambiental y Gerente Técnico del Campamento Tortuguero San Martín). Durante la temporada de la tortuga 2014 nos mantendrá actualizados sobre la marcha, cómo pueden participar como voluntarios y ayudar.
