Heavy Cozumel Rains Cancel School, Boon to the Environment

June has arrived on the island, bringing to Cozumel lots of rain.  In fact, in the first 4 days of the month, over 330 mm/13 inches flooded much of Cozumel’s low-lying areas.  Many streets were detoured and some area schools opted to close for the day rather than have students and parents face such inclement conditions. 

Such heavy rainfall also had a positive effect on an island facing drought conditions.  According to the head of the Municipal Department of Ecology, Rafael Chacon, over 150 turtle nests were discovered due to the heavy rains shifting compacted sand.  Additionally, over 500,000 palms in the Punta Sur reserve, received a much needed watering.

El mes de Junio llego a la Isla trayendo consigo gran cantidad de lluvia. De hecho, durante los primeros cuatro días del mes, más de 330mm/13 pulgadas inundaron muchas de las áreas bajas de Cozumel. Fue necesario desviar el tránsito de muchas calles y algunas escuelas optaron por no tener clases para que tanto los estudiantes como los padres no tuvieran afrontar las inclemencias del tiempo.

La fuerte lluvia tuvo también un efecto positivo sobre una Isla que padecía sequía. De acuerdo con el Director de la Dirección Municipal de Ecología, Rafael Chacón, se descubrieron más de 150 nidos de tortugas gracias a que las fuertes lluvias removieron la arena compactada. Además, más de 500,000 palmeras en la Reserva de Punta Sur recibieron el agua que les era tan necesaria.

Gala Cozumel 2013: A Success

Congratulations to the hardworking staff of the Cozumel Hotel Association, and the 12 local sponsors,  for their resounding success with Gala Cozumel 2013.  Now in it’s 25th year, Gala Cozumel was designed to highlight the island as a whole and promote tourism to the area.  This year’s event was attended by over 60 participants from 35 different companies, and took place from May 31st – June 2nd  Cozumel visitors  got to see a “malecon market,” a gastronomic showcase of area restaurants, visit several of the island’s major hotels, and see some of the popular excursions, including the 12 meter regatta challenge.

Cozumel Gala 2013: Un gran éxito

Felicitaciones al personal de la Asociación de Hoteles de Cozumel, y los 12 patrocinadores locales, por su éxito rotundo con Gala Cozumel 2013. Ahora en su 25o año, Gala Cozumel fue diseñado para resaltar la isla en su conjunto y promover el turismo a la zona. El evento de este año asistieron más de 60 participantes de 35 empresas diferentes, y se llevó a cabo del 31 de mayo - 02 de junio los visitantes de Cozumel para presenciar el "mercado malecon," un escaparate gastronómico de restaurantes de la zona, visitar a varios de los principales hoteles de la isla, y ver algunas de las excursiones más populares, incluyendo el 12 metros desafío regata.

Cozumel Seasonal Home Maintenance Summarized

Once you’ve purchased a home in Cozumel, it’s time to learn a little about the maintenance required.  Although we don’t have formal seasons on the island, there are still certain times of the year when it’s best to do preventative home maintenance.  This maintenance, in case you haven’t figured out, is different, than a location with a distinct climate change, and a cold winter.   

The first thing to keep in mind are rainy times, and hurricane season.  It’s important to get the preventative work done before the rain starts, so you’re not on your roof with a broomstick in the deluge attempting to unclog a drain.  Generally speaking, hurricane season runs from June – November.  The two rainy times in Cozumel are June and November.  By the time June rolls around, you’ll want to have a few simple tasks performed.

One of the first, and easiest things to do, is to re-caulk your windows.  I try and choose a really dry day with no rain in the projected forecast.   I scrape out most of the old caulk and apply a new layer, and make sure it’s sealed well (by running my finger over it).  Pay special attention to that one slider that always leaks.  Caulk and the caulking gun are available in any hardware store on island.

Now is also a great time to clean out your tinaco, and ensure that the drains on your roof are clear and free of debris.  Most Cozumel homes have a cistern, or tinaco, in the shape of a large black plastic tub, or a cemented holding tank,  on their roof, these recipients can hold hundreds of liters of water, so it’s important to make sure that it’s free of algae and disinfected periodically.  You can accomplish this yourself using an old broom, and a bleach/vinegar mix.  I wait until the water level is low, scrub the inside down and flush all the water out afterwards.  This is also a good time to ensure that the drains from your tinaco to your home’s water supply are clean and intact.  Some tinacos, don’t come with filters, if yours doesn’t have one, it’s easy to fashion one yourself out of chicken wire.  Since you’re up on the roof with your broom already, take a moment and make sure the drains for your roof are open and in good working order.

Every two years we have the roof re-sealed and “fester” the whole roof.  While sealer alone will keep your house cooler, fester, which is a fabric mesh that allows the sealer to really stick, will ensure that you won’t have any leaks during the coming rainy season. This is a messy, labor intensive job, and I generally hire someone, like a professional painter, to do it.

We don’t generally use our air conditioning until July or August, when it gets really warm, however, in order to cut down on the killer CFE bills, we have the AC units professionally serviced yearly, generally around June as well. We have the filters changed; the gases recharged and clean all the dust off the units.  I’ve discovered that the cost of this maintenance more than pays for itself in electric savings.

This is also a good time to fumigate your home.  We use a good professional fumigator who has our house on a every three-months rotation.  When it starts to get really wet out there, everything that’s outside is going to want to come into your home.  Having the house fumigated beforehand will discourage any unwanted visitors.

If you didn’t get all of these projects marked off the list before the June rains, don’t worry, very soon the sun will come out, everything will dry out, and you’ll have plenty of time to complete all of these tasks before the November season!

Mantenimiento para el hogar en Cozumel durante esta temporada, resumido

Una vez que usted ha comprado una casa en Cozumel, es el momento para aprender un poco sobre el mantenimiento requerido. A pesar de que no tiene estaciones oficiales de la isla, todavía hay ciertas épocas del año en que lo mejor es hacer un mantenimiento preventivo de su casa. Este mantenimiento, en caso de que no hemos descubierto, es diferente, de un lugar con un cambio climático distinto, y un invierno frío.

La primera cosa es tener en cuenta los tiempos de lluvia, y la temporada de huracanes. Es importante hacer el trabajo preventivo realizado antes del inicio de la lluvia, por lo que no está bien es tratar de limpiar su azotea con un palo de escoba en el diluvio  y destapar su desague. En términos generales, la temporada de huracanes se extiende desde junio hasta noviembre. Los dos tiempos de lluvia en Cozumel son junio y noviembre. En el momento en junio alrededor de empezar la temporada de lluvias, tendrá que tener algunas tareas sencillas por realizar.

Uno de los primeros y más fácil de cosas que hacer, es retocar el contorno de de las ventanas. Tratando de elegir un día muy seco, sin lluvia en el pronóstico proyectado.  Y raspar la mayor parte de la pasta o silicón viejo y aplicar una nueva capa, y asegúrese de que está bien sellado (mediante la ejecución de mi dedo sobre él). Preste especial atención a que una puerta corrediza  siempre hay fugas. Ponga silicón  con la mano  o utilice el aplicador, estando disponibles en cualquier tlapalería de la isla. Mantenimiento para el hogar en Cozumel durante esta temporada, resumido.

Ahora también es un buen momento para limpiar el tinaco, y asegúrese de que los desagües en el techo son claras y libres de residuos. La Mayoría de los hogares en Cozumel tienen una cisterna o tinaco, en la forma de una gran bañera de plástico negro, o un tanque de retención de cemento, en el techo, estos recipientes pueden contener cientos de litros de agua, por lo que es importante asegurarse de que está libre de algas y desinfectarse periódicamente. Esto se puede hacer por sí mismo utilizando una vieja escoba, y una mezcla de cloro / vinagre. Espero a que el nivel del agua es bajo, frote el interior hacia abajo y vaciar toda el agua después. Por lo general no utilizar el aire acondicionado hasta julio o agosto, cuando se pone mejor y caliente, sin embargo, con el fin de reducir las facturas de CFE, tenemos las unidades de aire acondicionado profesionalmente atendidos anualmente, por lo general alrededor de junio también. U.S. State Dept.: No Terrorist Groups in Mexico

The United States State Department ruled this week that there are no terrorist organizations operating in Mexico and that the criminal groups that exist in Mexico lack political and ideological motivations. They also praised the Mexican government for continuing to strengthen its law enforcement institutions and for dismantling the criminal organizations responsible for the violence related to drug trafficking. This is good news that has been long awaited by expats who live in and love Mexico because the report also noted that no terrorist organization began targeting U.S. citizens inside or from Mexico. Hopefully, this will put much of the irresponsible North-of-the-Border press stories to rest at long last.

Clase de Yoga el viernes en el Mercado del Malecón para apoyar al Refugio "La Esperanza"

El Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos dictaminó esta semana que no hay organizaciones terroristas que operan en México y que los grupos criminales que existen en México carecen de motivaciones políticas e ideológicas. También elogió al gobierno mexicano por continuar fortaleciendo sus instituciones policiales y por el desmantelamiento de las organizaciones criminales responsables de la violencia relacionada con el narcotráfico. Esta es una buena noticia que ha sido largamente esperado por los expatriados que viven y aman a México debido a que el informe también señaló que ninguna organización terrorista comenzó a apuntar a los ciudadanos estadounidenses en el interior o desde México. Con suerte, esto hará que gran parte de la irresponsabilidad del Norte-de-la-Frontera artículos de prensa para descansar por fin.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Darian, male cat 6 weeks old. He came in with 7 other siblings are part of our TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program. We negotiated with the person that sent them in along with 2 adults and they took the adults back and 4 of the kittens. He is an adorable little tuxedo kitten. Admission date May 22nd 2013 Please remember we have the T.N.R. program available, and that we do early spay/neuter with appointment for free (donations are appreciated) Kitten Season was late but still hard.

Goyo, male dog 4 months old. Weight 6.1 kg. He was dumped one afternoon near the shelter and neighbors found him hiding in some bushes near by, they showed us as we were leaving the shelter late that afternoon, he was very scared. He is very cute terrier mix. Very smart, excellent watch dog that takes seriously his guardian duty. Admission date April 18th, 2013. Don't forget that it is very important to have a collar with an identification tag at all times.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Darian, gato macho de 6 semanas de edad. Vino con otros 7 hermanitos como parte del programa T.N.R. (Atrapa, Esteriliza y Libera) Negociamos con la persona que los mandó junto con 2 adultos y ellos se llevaron de regreso a los adultos y 4 gatitos. Es un adorable gatito bicolor (tuxedo) Fecha de Admisión: 22 de Mayo de 2013. Por favor recuerden que tenemos disponible el programa T.N.R. y que hacemos esterilización temprana con cita de manera gratuita (los donativos se agradecen) LA Temporada de Gatitos llegó tarde pero fuerte.

Lo botaron cerca de la Sociedad Humanitaria, los vecinos lo encontraron escondido en unos arbustos cercanos, nos lo mostraron cuando salíamos tarde del refugio, estaba muy asustado. Es una tierna mezcla de terrier. Muy inteligente, se toma muy en serio su papel de guardián, excelente cuidador. Fecha de Admisión: Abril 18 de 2013. No olvides que es muy importante que tu mascota tenga collar con placa de identificación todo el tiempo.

How I Came To Call Cozumel Home, A Series by Island Residents

I have always felt a native cozumelenian even though I was not born here; this is because I have lived in Cozumel all my life. In 1971 my father, Luis F. Olan Luna, a Tabasco born Civil Engineer, was commissioned for the construction of the Island’s Post Office and Telegraph building, still standing on Avenue Rafael E. Melgar. At that time, he was already married to my mother, Teacher Teresita Cázares Cuevas born in Michoacán.

Both liked Cozumel very much. Back then, there was almost nothing, no cars, no businesses and, I believe, almost no people; it was very peaceful and, above all, they had been charmed by the beauty of the Island, hence they decided to stay and establish our family here.

My father continued working as a civil engineer, but now as a self-employed professional, and in 1976 founded Constructora Prodeccsa (Proyectos de Construcciones de Cozumel) still active. He has built many private projects as well as for the government, thus leaving a bit of his print in Cozumel. On the other hand, as a teacher my mother helped teacher Tepy in founding Intituto Partenón, currently closet o the airport. My mom was its first teacher and its first director. In 1973 my brother Luis was born in Irapuato because, due to the Island’s conditions at the time, my parents wanted to prevent any possible emergency.  I, Eugenia, was born in 1977 also in Irapuato. Both my brother and I returned to the Island 15 days after we were born. We stayed in Cozumel and finished middle school, but moved to Guadalajara to pursue high school. My brother got his degree as Public Accountant and returned to the Island to settle down on a personal and professional basis. My sister-in-law, Ereri Maliachi, was born in Mexico City, but when they got married, she moved to the Island; they have 2 children, Lalo and Valeria, who by the way, were born in the Island.

As for me, I hold a degree as Computer Systems Engineer and came back to the Island also to establish. I have 2 children, Diego and Daniel, also the first in the family to have been born in Cozumel.

I definetely can’t see myself living anywhere else other than Cozumel; the peace we still enjoy is  unique, and although the Island’s economy and safety have been  affected, I feel and believe we still live in a Paradise. Time is gold and we have much of it here in the Island, we can enjoy our children, our families at all times; everything is close-by, we all know each other or, if not, at least most of the population. I am happy to have arrived here, and here is where I would like my days to end.

Cómo se convirtió Cozumel en mi hogar. Una serie escrita por habitantes de la Isla

A pesar de que no nací aquí, siempre me he sentido Cozumeleña, ya que prácticamente he vivido aquí toda mi vida. Mi papá, el Ing. Luis F. Olán Luna, es Ingeniero Civil originario de Tabasco, por cuestiones laborales, lo mandaron en 1971 a construir el edificio de Correos y Telégrafos de la Isla, el cual hasta su fecha sigue de pie sobre la Av. Rafael E. Melgar. Para ese entonces, él ya estaba casado con mi mamá la Maestra Ma. Teresita Cázares Cuevas, originaria de Michoacán.

A ambos les gusto mucho Cozumel. En ese entonces no había casi nada, ni coches, ni comercios, creo que ni gente, era muy tranquilo y, sobre todo, quedaron maravillados con la belleza de la Isla, decidieron quedarse y establecer aquí nuestra familia.

Mi papá siguió trabajando como Ing. Civil pero ahora como profesionista independiente, fundando en 1976 la Constructora Prodeccsa (Proyectos de Construcciones de Cozumel) que hasta la fecha sigue activa, ha hecho innumerables obras particulares así como para el gobierno, dejando en Cozumel un poco de su huella. Por otro lado, mi mamá siendo maestra ayudó a la Maestra Tepy a fundar el Instituto Partenón, que actualmente se encuentra cerca del Aeropuerto. Mi mamá fue su primer maestra y curiosamente su primer directora. En 1973 nace mi hermano, Luis, que por las condiciones que existían en la Isla optaron por ir a Irapuato a que naciera, sobretodo de llegar a presentarse alguna emergencia. En 1977 nací yo Eugenia, de igual manera nos fuimos a Irapuato a que naciera. En ambos casos, tanto mi hermano como yo, regresamos a la Isla teniendo únicamente 15 días de nacidos. Aquí estudiamos hasta la secundaria y ya para la preparatoria migramos a Guadalajara a continuar con nuestros estudios. Mi hermano se graduó de Contador Público, regreso a la Isla para establecerse personal y laboralmente. Mi cuñada, Ereri Maliachi, es originaria de México; al casarse, vino a vivir a la Isla y ambos formaron su familia con 2 hijos, Lalo y Valeria, quien por cierto ya nació en la Isla.

Por mi parte, me gradué de Ing. en Sistemas Computacionales, regrese a la Isla de igual manera a establecerme. Tengo 2 hijos, Diego y Daniel, quien también fue el primero de la familia en nacer en Cozumel.

Definitivamente no me imagino viviendo en otro lugar que no sea Cozumel; la tranquilidad que aún tenemos es única, y a pesar de que la economía de la Isla y la seguridad se han visto mermadas, siento y pienso que seguimos viviendo en un paraíso. El tiempo es oro y aquí en la Isla tenemos mucho; podemos disfrutar de nuestros hijos, de nuestras familias en todo momento, todo lo tenemos cerca, todos nos conocemos, o si no a todos, por lo menos a gran parte de la población. Estoy feliz de haber llegado aquí y aquí me gustaría terminar mi vida.
