Airplane Crash Especially Hard for Cozumel

Last Sunday evening, a small airplane carrying members of Roberto Borge’s campaign team crashed in route to the airport in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a city in central Quintana Roo.  Nine passengers on board were killed, including Cozumel native, Víctor Fernando Marchán Valdez, who was part of the security team.  Roberto Borge, who is running for Governor under the PRI/ PVEM ticket, announced suspension of his campaign for 2 days to allow time for bereavement.  Funeral services for Víctor Fernando Marchán Valdez were held on Tuesday, attended by both the Mayor and the Governor.  Our deepest and sincerest condolences to the families that have been affected by this tragedy. 

El domingo por la noche, un pequeño avión llevando a los miembros del equipo de campaña de Roberto Borge se estrelló en ruta al aeropuerto de Felipe Carrillo Puerto, en la ciudad central de Quintana Roo.  Nueve pasajeros a bordo murieron, incluyendo el nativo de Cozumel, Víctor Fernando Marchán Valdez, quien formó parte del equipo de seguridad.  Roberto Borge, que está ejecutando para gobernador en el PRI y PVEM, anunció la suspensión de su campaña por 2 días de duelo. Los Servicios funerarios para Víctor Fernando Marchán Valdez se celebraron el martes, asistieron tanto el alcalde y el gobernador.  Nuestro más profundo y sincero pésame a las familias que han sido afectadas por esta tragedia. 

74 Year Old US Coast Guard Ship Calls into Cozumel

This week the United States Coast Guard Vessel, “USS Eagle” called into Port in Cozumel.  The 74 year old “Tall Ship” has quite an interesting history.  She was originally christened in 1936 by Adolph Hitler, as part of the Germany military, and given to the United States at the end of World War II as part of the war reparations.  Carrying a crew of 12 officers, 68 crew and 150 cadets, she makes a yearly goodwill training mission to Caribbean ports such as Cozumel.  For more information on the tall ship, including a map of her current whereabouts, please check out http://www.uscga.edu/display.aspx?id=2558.

"Abuelita Cozumel 2010" Contest

This past Friday, June 11th, the annual DIF (Desarrollo Integral de la Familia), contest for “Abuelita Cozumel 2010” was held.  Congratulations to , Nely Isabel Solis who came in first place and won the title of  “Abuelita Cozumel 2010”.  Dona Nely also won the title of “Abuelita Fotogenia.”  Winning the title of “Abuelita Simpatía” was Jacinta May.

Este viernes, 11 de junio, el DIF anual (Desarrollo Integral de la Familia), celebró el concurso  para la "Abuelita Cozumel 2010".  Felicidades a Nely Isabel Solís, que llegó en primer lugar y ganó el título de "Abuelita Cozumel 2010".  Doña Nely también ganó el título de "Abuelita Fotogenia."  Gano el título de "Abuelita Simpatía" Jacinta Mayo.

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Chispa & Mochito

This lovely dog, Chispa,  was brought by her owners a few weeks ago; unwanted and very pregnant. We offered to spay her and give her back, but no, they didn’t want her one way or another. She was enormous, and (sadly) we made the decision to stop the pregnancy and spay her. We have so many dogs and puppies, and not that many options for homing them well. After the surgery Chispa shrunk to about half the size she arrived, and her ribs showed prominently. She also tested possitive for heart-worm. The treatment is expensive, so we thought of sharing her story to seek help and give her a chance. She is such a sweet dog. Please please, can anyone help us with part of her $2,000 pesos medication? She has so much love to give and is so happy now that she feels loved and appreciated. She is a big kisser!

Chispa, esta adorable perra nos fue entregada por sus dueños; no deseada y muy embarazada. Ofrecimos operarla, pero ya no la quisieron más. Estaba enorme, y tristemente tomamos la decisión de abortar. Tenemos tantos perros y cachorros, y no tantas opciones para colocarlos bien. Después de su cirugía, Chispa se encogió como a la mitad del tamaño y sus costillas  se hicieron muy prominentes. También resultó positiva a gusano del corazón. El tratamiento es bastante caro, así que pensamos compartir su historia para buscar ayuda y darle una oportunidad. ¡Es tan cariñosa y solo quiere dar besos y besos! ¿Hay alguien que pueda ayudar a pagar parte de su medicamento? Tiene tanto amor para dar, y se siente tan felíz ahora que se siente querida y apapachada.

This young lad, Mochito,  was found by the stairs outside of Chedraui. His tail was severed near the base and it had only an inch-long stump, raw and starting to infect. In spite of his story, Mochito is a very happy cat. He is slowly gaining weight and loves to play and to be held. We don’t know if it was an accident or an act of cruelty, but a week later somebody found another kitten with a severed tail, just like his, and in the same place! Fortunately, that same person kept that kitten and she is doing very well. But our Mochito is still waiting to be discovered by that person who will love him to pieces.

A este jovencito se lo encontraron en las escaleras afuera de Chedraui. Su cola estaba cortada cerca de la base y solo quedaba un muñón de unos 3 cm de largo. No sabemos si lo suyo fue un accidente, o un acto de crueldad, pero resulta que una semana después alguien encontró otra gatita con la cola cortada igual que él, y en el mismo lugar! Afortunadamente, esa misma persona adoptó a esa gatita y ahora está muy bien. Pero nuestro Mochito sigue en espera de ser descubierto por ese alguien que lo va a querer todito.

A Quick Update on The Dump Dogs & Garbacho - by Monica Velasco

This video is the follow-up to the first video about the dump, the dogs,  and Gabacho. Many people have asked about what happened with the dogs from the Municipal dump and Gabacho. This video shows the rescue of the dogs. They are safe at the HS shelter, gradually adapting to their new life. Gabacho worked at the shelter for a couple of weeks, but he is struggling with this huge change. He worked hard and showed up bright and early, but having a supervisor and a boss is something he has not experienced in 20 years. So he is not working with us now, but we don't blame him. It has to be very hard to adjust to a life among people, a team, a boss, etc. after 20 years of being practically a hermit. We appreciate and admire what he did for these dogs and cats now under our care. We just hope to have him over to visit them soon.

Improv Acting Workshop at the Casa de Cultura
