July Upcoming Elections to Affect Alcohol Sales, Plan Accordingly

With Cozumel’s municipal elections scheduled for Saturday July 6th, retail liquor sales will be restricted throughout the weekend.  No liquor will be sold from Friday, July 5th starting at 11:59 pm, until midnight on Saturday July 6th. These sanctions are not expected to affect All-Inclusive hotels, restaurants, or other tourist locations.   “Dry Law” is traditionally undertaken at these times to ensure a safe and orderly electoral process, and can carry a hefty fine if broken.  Elections traditionally take place during the first weekend in July.

Las próximas elecciones en el mes de julio afectarán la venta de bebidas alcohólicas; hagan sus planes con anticipación

En virtud de las elecciones municipales para Cozumel previstas para el sábado 6 de julio, se restringe la venta al menudeo de bebidas alcohólicas durante todo el fin de semana. No habrá venta de licores a partir del viernes 5 de julio desde las 11:59 p.m. hasta la medianoche del sábado 6 de julio. Se espera que hoteles todo-incluido así como tampoco los restaurantes u otros sitios dedicados al turismo se vean afectados por estas medidas. Durante la época de elecciones tradicionalmente se aplica la "Ley Seca” para garantizar un proceso electoral ordenado y seguro; en caso de incumplimiento, aplican fuertes multas. Por lo general, estas elecciones se llevan a cabo durante el primer fin de semana del mes de julio.

Mexican President's Children Enjoy Cozumel Vacation

Members of Mexico’s First Family, Enrique Peña Nieto’s children, spent a relaxing weekend here in Cozumel.  Accompanied by various family and friends, the troupe arrived on Friday, accompanied by a security detail.  Included in their vacation:  a visit Dolphinaris Cozumel.  This visit differs from other First Family visits, in the respect that members of the press were not invited along for photo opportunities, so that family members could relax.

Miembros de la Primera Familia de México, los hijos de Enrique Peña Nieto, pasaron un tranquilo fin de semana en Cozumel. Acompañados por algunos familiares y amigos, el grupo llegó el viernes acompañado por una escolta. A sus vacaciones incluyeron: una visita a Dolphinaris Cozumel. A diferencia de otras visitas de la Primera Familia, los miembros de la prensa no fueron invitados para tomarles fotografías, ello con el objeto que la familia pudiera relajarse.

President of China Visits Yucatan

On June 6, Governor Rolando Zapata Bello received Xi Jinping, President of the Republic of China, Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico, and their wives at Chichen Itza. It has since been announced that Governor Zapata Bello and President Xi Jinping were able to begin a conversation that is destined to benefit both Yucatan and China. They announced intentions to forge agreements regarding renewable energy, industry, education and tourism. It is a source of great pride, throughout Yucatan, that our state offers such a degree of safety, health care and cultural offerings that presidents from around the world have felt secure enough to travel here for decades.

El Presidente de China visita Yucatán

El día 6 de junio el Gobernador Rolando Zapata Bello recibió en Chichen Itzá a Xi Jinping, Presidente de la República China, a Enrique Peña Nieto, Presidente de México y a sus respectivas esposas.  Desde entonces se anunció que al Gobernador Zapata Bello y el Presidente Xi Jinping les fue posible iniciar conversaciones que benefician tanto al estado de Yucatán como a China. Ambos comunicaron sus intenciones para forjar acuerdos en materia de energía renovable, industria, educación y turismo. En todo Yucatán es motivo de gran orgullo, que nuestro estado ofrezca tal grado de seguridad, servicios de salud y opciones culturales, que presidentes de todo el mundo se han sentido suficientemente seguros como para viajar aquí desde hace décadas.

2013 Cozumel Turtle Season – How You Can Get Involved & Help

Cozumel’s Municipal Department of Ecology is off and running with the turtle season well underway.  So far, over 350 turtle nests have been identified and marked.  Of these, 150 are from loggerhead turtles and the rest are from green turtles.  Turtle eggs take about two months of incubate, depending on the species, meaning turtle hatchlings should be ready by August.  In the meantime it’s really important that we do everything we can to make sure that the turtles have a clear, safe passage to their nests, and that means it’s beach clean-up time!

Beach Clean-up - This Saturday, June 22 at 8 am volunteers will be gathering at the offices of the Department of Ecology, located in front of the Centoe Park on Av. 65.  We’ll then proceed in a caravan over to the windward side of the island to make some clean beaches.  If you have your own transportation, please offer to give a ride to other volunteers as well. 

Nesting Seminars – If you’re interesting in assisting in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Biologist Rafael Chacon, is conducting informative presentations as to how you can help the turtles during their nesting season.  Starting at 8:30 pm at the Environmental Interpretation Park, or Centoe, on Av. 65.  The presentation is approximately 3 hours in length, followed by the visit to the windward side of the island, at night, to assist.  Advanced reservations are required.  A contribution, which goes directly to the turtle program, of $55usd for adults and $30usd for children up to 13 years of age is requested.  Children under the age of 5 are free.  Please contact either Cindy Trautwein, volunteer networker, 9871054708 or the Department of Ecology at 872 5795 to reserve spaces or ask about a group rate.

Temporada de la Tortuga 2013 en Cozumel. Cómo pueden participar y ayudar.

La Dirección Municipal de Ecología en Cozumel se encuentra muy atareada con la temporada de tortuga que ya se encuentra en marcha. Hasta el momento, se han identificado y marcado más de 350 nidos de tortugas. De éstos, 150 son de tortuga caguama y el resto de tortugas verdes. Dependiendo de la especie, los huevos de tortuga tardan cerca de dos meses en incubar, lo que significa que las crías estarán listas para el mes de agosto. Mientras tanto, es muy importante que hagamos todo lo posible para garantizar que las tortugas tengan un tramo limpio y seguro hacia sus nidos; eso significa que ¡es tiempo de limpiar las playas!

Limpieza de Playa – Este próximo día sábado 22 de junio a las 8 a.m. los voluntarios se reunirán en las oficinas de la Dirección de Ecología en Ave. 65 Parque del Cenote. De ahí, continuaremos en caravana hacia el este de la Isla a limpiar algunas de las playas. Si cuenta con su propio medio de transporte, ofrézcalo por favor para llevar a otros voluntarios.

Seminarios de Anidación – Si les interesa asistir a esta oportunidad única en la vida, el Biólogo Rafael Chacón realizará presentaciones acerca de cómo ustedes pueden ayuda a las tortugas durante su temporada de anidación, a partir de las 8:30 p.m. en el Parque de Interpretación Ambiental, o Cenote, en la Av. 65. La presentación tiene una duración aproximada de 3 horas, seguida por la visita nocturna al extremo este de la Isla, para ayudar. Se requiere reservar con antelación. Para los adultos se solicita una aportación de $55 dólares que se aplica directamente al programa de tortuga, y de $30  dólares para niños de hasta 13 años de edad. Los niños menores de 5 años entran gratis. Humane Society Pets of the Week

Helena the cat is a reminder that we must do early spays/neuter in every pet, she's a very young mother, maybe 7 months old. She was evicted from the home where she gave birth to her 3 kittens as the ridiculous notion that many believe: if you are pregnant you should not have a cat around. She is beautiful, very affectionate and a great mom to her 3 kittens. Admission date May 20, 2013 She and her kittens will be available for adoption in one more month. But please come by a visit them.

Toxoplasmosis is a disease commonly related to cats, but it far more common to acquire it eating raw meat, badly cooked, or by eating without washing your hands first, especially after gardening. How to prevent? Wash your hands properly. To read more.

Canela, is a female dog approx 1 year old, was found in the streets with a hurt right front leg, she had opened wounds. Her rescuer said they would like to adopt her, but they did not return after bringing her to the HS so she is up for adoption. She's super sweet, and somehow been overlooked. She's now fully healed and ready for a forever home. A small sized dog 10 kg. Admission date April 3rd, 2013

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Helena la gata nos recuerda la importancia de esterilizar de manera temprana (a partir de los 2 meses de edad y antes del primer celo) Ella es una madre muy joven, de tal vez 7 meses de edad. La sacaron de donde tuvo a sus 3 gatitos por la ignorancia de pensar que si una mujer está embarazada, no debe de tener gatos. Es hermosa, muy afectuosa y gran mamá de sus 3 gatitos. Fecha de Admisión: 20 de Mayo de 2013.

LaToxoplasmosis es una enfermedad atribuida comunmente a los gatos, a pesar de que la fuente mas frecuente de infección es comer care cruda o mal cocida o por comer sin lavarte apropiadamente las manos, sobretodo después de labores de jardinería. Cómo prevenir: lávate bien las manos. Para leer más.

Canela, hembra de aproximadamente 1 año de edad. La encontraron en la calle con una cortada abierta en su mano derecha. Su rescatistas dijo que podría quedársela, pero ya no regreso por ella, así que esta para adopción. Es muy dulce y nadie la ha pedido aún. Curada y lista para su hogar de siempre. Pequeña de 10 kilos. Fecha de Admisión: 3 de Abril de 2013.

How I Came To Call Cozumel Home, A Series by Island Residents

Never ever did I think I would be calling Cozumel my home when I first alighted from the red-eye special “San Francisco to Cozumel”  flight back in 1981.   I came to spend my measly one week vacation with this super guy (my now husband Dan) I had met earlier that year in S.F.  Dan planned to spend 3 months here diving that summer.  Well my vacation here turned into a disaster!   We went to the eastside and under a full moon Dan proposed to me.  Later when we returned to the hotel and turned on the lights, I discovered that my beautiful white “tropical” dress had a big tar patch in the back!  Yes, it went down hill after that.  Me, with Montezuma’s revenge, sick in bed practically the whole time and Dan who would have rather been diving than playing nursemaid.  By the end of the week, I surely thought that was the end of Dan & the end of Cozumel!  However, the following Sunday the phone rang ….and it was my honey, calling me from Cozumel once again.  In his way of thinking, nothing went wrong during our time together!

Fast forward…we married and decided to live in Cuernavaca for 6 months where I could study Spanish.  While there we did road trips and discovered Oaxaca.  Fell in love with Oaxaca and lived there for a year.  Travelled more and discovered Merida.  So lived there for another year for the “mayan experience.”  Finally figured we were almost to the east coast of Mexico so why not go back to where it all started…Cozumel!  Well that was back in May 1985.  And we are still here.

Dan urged me to learn to dive.  I did and fell completely in love with diving and island life.  It was a perfect place to “raise our dogs and cats”… the cost of living here at that time was quite low … and there was much to explore and many beaches to comb.   We decided to build our home here and spent Christmas of ’86 in our new home where we still live now!  Our love for diving and the Island rhythm, though much different now, has kept us here.

I’ve always had a passion for helping animals and many a dog I would take to the house to treat and bathe with asuntol.  That was before I discover the easier treatment where I could just put ivometrin in hamburger meat and give it on the street.  Back in the mid-ninety’s,   Monica Velasco, Lisa Ramirez and I signed the documents that legally founded “los Protectores de los Animales” (Humane Society).  I spent many hours there helping with the animals and many hours hitting the streets asking businesses for donations and collecting the few coins I’d find in the donation boxes.  

It’s been a great life filled with lots of interesting people and deeply rooted friendships throughout the years.  We still love travelling the Yucatan peninsula and exploring the beaches here at home.   So do Cesar and Katie, our 4-legged kids!

Genevieve Hartman is a long time resident of Cozumel, dedicating her time to diving and the welfare of animals on the island. she had worked in radio as pubic service director & promotion director of KSAN in San Francisco.

Cómo se convirtió Cozumel en mi hogar. Una serie escrita por habitantes de la Isla

Cuando en el año 1981 recién baje del vuelo madrugador “San Francisco a Cozumel”,  nunca imaginé que algún día consideraría a Cozumel como mi hogar. Vine a pasar unas vacaciones triviales de una semana con este súper chico (Dan, mi actual marido) a quien había conocido a principios de ese año en San Francisco. Dan había planeado pasar ese verano buceando aquí durante 3 meses. ¡Bueno mis vacaciones se convirtieron en un desastre! Fuimos al extremo este y, bajo una luna llena, Dan me propuso matrimonio. Más tarde, cuando regresamos al hotel y encendimos las luces, ¡descubrí que mi hermoso vestido blanco "tropical" tenía una gran mancha de chapopote en la espalda! Sí, a partir de ese momento todo fue de mal en peor. Con la venganza de Moctezuma (diarrea de los turistas), casi todo el tiempo lo pasé enferma en cama y con Dan, quien hubiera preferido estar buceando que estar haciendo el papel de niñera. Al terminar la semana, pensé que ¡seguramente era el fin de la relación con Dan y de Cozumel! Sin embargo, el domingo siguiente sonó el teléfono.... y era mi amorcito, que llamaba una vez más desde Cozumel. En su forma de pensar, ¡nada había salido mal durante el tiempo que estuvimos juntos!

Vamos más adelante...nos casamos y decidimos vivir en Cuernavaca durante 6 meses, donde yo podría estudiar español. Durante el tiempo que permanecimos ahí, viajamos por carretera y descubrimos Oaxaca. Nos enamoramos de Oaxaca y vivimos allí durante un año. Viajamos más y descubrimos Mérida, entonces residimos ahí durante un año para vivir la "experiencia maya". Finalmente nos dimos cuenta que estábamos cerca de la costa este de México, ¿por qué no volver a donde todo comenzó?... ¡Cozumel! Bueno, eso fue en mayo de 1985. Y aún estamos aquí.

Dan me animaba para que aprendiera a bucear. Lo hice; quedé totalmente enamorada del buceo y de la vida en la Isla. Era un lugar perfecto para "criar a nuestros perros y gatos"… en ese momento el costo de la vida aquí era bastante bajo... y había mucho por explorar y muchas playas por recorrer. Decidimos construir nuestro hogar aquí y pasamos la Navidad del año 86 en nuestra casa nueva, ¡donde aún vivimos! Nuestro amor por el buceo y el ritmo de la Isla, a pesar de que ahora es muy distinto, nos ha mantenido aquí. 

Siempre he tenido la pasión de ayudar a los animales y lleve a casa a más de un perro para darle tratamiento y bañarlo con asuntol. Eso fue antes de que descubriera un tratamiento más sencillo, donde simplemente se puede poner ivometrin en la carne de hamburguesa y dársela en la calle. A mediados de los años noventa, Mónica Velasco, Lisa Ramírez y yo firmamos la documentación para fundar legamente "Los Protectores de los Animales" (Sociedad Humanitaria). Ahí he pasado muchas horas  ayudando con los animales y muchas horas saliendo a las calles solicitando donativos a las empresas, y la recolectando las pocas monedas que me encuentro en las cajas de donativos.

A través de los años ha sido una gran vida, llena de mucha gente interesante y profundas amistades. Aún nos encanta viajar a través de la península de Yucatán y explorar las playas aquí en casa. Lo mismo ocurre con Cesar y Katie, nuestros hijos de 4 patas.

Genevieve Hartman ha residido durante muchos años en Cozumel, dedicando su tiempo en el buceo y al bienestar de los animales de la Isla. Trabajó en la radio como directora de servicio púbico y directora de promoción de KSAN en San Francisco.
