VIMA Kitesurfing Event in Cozumel
VIMA (Viento y Marea), a kitesurfing tournament, is scheduled here in Cozumel for the weekend of March 26th – 29th. The best kitesurfers in Mexico will be on hand, since this tournament is part of the national circuit. The tournament has three categories, Men’s Freestyle, Women’s Freestyle and Course Racing. The weekend-long event also has parties, live music and even a bikini contest. For more information, check out the facebook page.
Cozumel has some of the most consistent wind conditions in the Caribbean, making it a kitesurfers paradise. Almost any avid kitesurfer has heard of our famous Northwest Country Club beach and west coast surf, Cozumel has also raised some fantastic local kitesurfing talent, including national champions and pro tour kiters.
VIMA (Viento y Marea), un torneo de kitesurf, está previsto aquí en Cozumel para el fin de semana marzo 26– 29 Los mejores kitesurfers en México estarán, ya que este torneo es parte del circuito nacional. Fire in the Landfill Now Under Control
For some time now, Cozumel has been experiencing problems with garbage, specifically our city landfill. City officials have worked tirelessly to get a recycling program off the ground, and have also hired a concession to take over both the reconstruction and Operations of the landfill. A new twist was added to the tale last Wednesday when the Municipal landfill caught fire.
Since many hazardous materials were involved, the recommendation from firefighters was to contain the fire, and allow it to burn itself out. Representatives from the Proteccion Civil announced that, due to the efforts of 22 Cozumel firefighters, the fire was under control on Monday and expected to suffocate within the next five days.
Hace algún tiempo, Cozumel ha estado experimentando problemas con la basura, específicamente nuestro vertedero de la ciudad. Oficiales de la ciudad han trabajado incansablemente para tener un programa de reciclaje en el suelo y también ha dado una concesión para tomar tanto las operaciones del vertedero y de la reconstrucción. Un nuevo giro fue añadido a esta historia el miércoles pasado, cuando se incendió el vertedero municipal.
Dado que muchos materiales peligrosos estuvieron involucrados, la recomendación de bomberos fue contener el fuego y permita que quemar a sí mismo. Representantes de la Protección Civil anunciaron que, debido a los esfuerzos de 22 bomberos de Cozumel, el fuego estaba bajo control el lunes y esperan sofocarlo completamente dentro de los próximos cinco días.
 
Rock N Java New Website Launched
Rock 'n Java Caribbean Bar and Grill and the Rock 'n Java Thai Noodle Bar, have launched their brand new website, created by award winning designer, Chuck Williams and features a number of beautiful food photographs by local photographer, Petrus Lopez.(pintapapel@prodigy.net.mx).
The new web site is actually two sites in one; Rock N Java Bar and Grill, a long time island favorite, the Thai Noodle Bar, which has developed a large following in the year and a half since it opened.

Fundraiser for the Casa de Ancanios a Success
Last Saturday, Las Lunas B & B hosted a fundraiser for the Hogar de Ancainos which was a resounding success and a great start to raise awareness of the project. Island residents collected $500 US, and loads of stuff for the home. Around 35 people attended, enjoyed delicious snacks provided by local restaurants, including, Rock N Java, Pescaderia San Carlos, Guidos, La Cocay and other individuals. All left overs were sent to the Casa de los Ancianos for residents to enjoy as well. The director and 5 other people, including: the architect, the lawyer, the accountant, sub director, and a translator, provided a well organized presentation regarding the plans for the future for the Hogar.
This upcoming Saturday morning, March 13th, at 10 am interested parties can meet at the old facility to take a tour, then go for a tour at the new home. It is beside the orphanage, which will also be a first for almost everyone to see. The new building is impressive and a first in the Yucatan! To get to the new facility go out the transversal, to 95, go north, to the sports field. You have to walk back in the jungle from there.
El sábado pasado, Las Lunas B & B acogió un recaudador de fondos para la Hogar de Ancianos de que fue un rotundo éxito y un gran comienzo para sensibilizar sobre el proyecto. Los residentes de la isla recolectaron $ 500 dólares y algunas cosas para el hogar. Alrededor de 35 personas asistieron y, disfrutaron de deliciosos aperitivos proporcionados por restaurantes locales, incluyendo, el Rock N Java, Pescadería San Carlos, Guidos, La Cocay y los individuos. Toda la comida restante fue enviada a la Casa de los Ancianos para los residentes la disfrutaran. El director y otras 5 personas: el arquitecto, el abogado, el contador, sub director y un traductor, proporcionan una presentación bien organizada sobre planes para el Hogar.

Annual Humane Society Art Auction
The date of the Annual Art Auction for the Humane Society has been announced. The event will take place on Friday March 26th starting at 7 pm, and will take place at the Gallery Istanbul, located right on the waterfront, downstairs from the Casa Mexicana Hotel. Entrance, to this long awaited event, will be $10 usd or 120 pesos. Beer and wine complimentary. This year’s event features 2 silent auctions and one live auction. Se ha anunciado la fecha de la subasta anual de arte para la Socidad Humanitaria. El evento tendrá lugar el viernes, 26 de marzo, comenzando a las 7 pm y tendrá lugar en la Galería Estambul, situada en la zona ribereña, planta baja del Hotel Casa Mexicana. La entrada, a este evento, será de $ 10 usd o 120 pesos. Cerveza y vino gratis. El evento de este año cuenta con 2 subastas silenciosas y una subasta en directo. Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Orco & Estrella
Orco the dog was found in Punta Langosta with a collar on and in good shape, so we thought he would soon be claimed. But this nice guy has been with us for several months now, so even though he appeared to have had a good home, he really needs one. Orco is about a year and a half, is healthy and playful and has a very nice disposition with all.
Estrella the kitty is another sweet girl who has gone unnoticed by adopters, this darling thing has been with us for more than two years! She was a tiny kitten when she arrived and has consistently been loving and kind with all. Estrella would make a lovely friend for a lucky someone.

Orco el perro fue encontrado en Punta Langosta con collar puesto y en buenas condiciones, por lo que pensamos que su dueño lo reclamaría pronto. Pero esta chulada ya estado con nosotros por varios meses, así que aunque parecía haber tenido un buen hogar, realmente necesita uno nuevo. Orco tiene aproximadamente año y medio, es muy saludable y juguetón, y tiene muy buen temperamento.
Estrella es otra gatita a quien no le ha tocado ser elegida en adopción, esta dulzura tiene con nosotros más de dos años! Era pequeñita cuando llegó, y ha sido consistentemente amable y cariñosa con todos. Princesita fue encontrada en la calle por una voluntaria. Estrella sería una linda compañera felina para algún afortunado.

Long time island resident, Nancy Murray, has rescued a mother and her two puppies from life on the roof of a Motorcycle repair shop. The mother had a litter about 6 weeks ago and all but one of her puppies were sold, since the owner claims they are pure bred boxers. Two years ago, from the same location, Nancy convinced the owners to give her a pit bull that weighed only half of her ideal body weight, neighbors referred to the dog as “tope (speedbump)” since she was unable to lift her head off the ground. Nancy is really eager to see these 2 dogs have a chance at happiness and a loving home. Please contact Nancy at 857 2122 (afternoons) if you can help.
La residente que tiene mucho tiempo en la isla, Nancy Murray, ha rescatado a una madre y sus dos cachorros de la vida dura en un techo de una tienda donde reparan motocicletas. La madre tenía una camada hace unos 6 semanas pero solo un cachorro no se vendieron, ya que el dueño afirma que son de pura raza pura. Hace dos años, desde la misma ubicación, Nancy convencido de los propietarios para darle un pit bull que pesaba sólo la mitad de su peso corporal ideal, el vecino puso el apodo del perro “tope”. Myrna's Book "Este Gusto Por La Vida"
Island Resident, Myrna Cleghorn, is probably best known for her enthusiasm for life, positive attitude, and wildly curly hair. However, Myrna is also a published author, and she’s written a book entitled “Ese Gusto Por La Vida,” which is, in her words “Fifty-two readings, one for each week of the year, that call the reader to savor, digest and implement the teaching of each weekly theme to his everyday life. Fishing Tournament Schedule
This year Cozumel is going to host three major fishing tournaments: "Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas" May 14 – 16, "Bernardo Alonso", June 4 – 6 and "Antonio Fernández González" November 21- 22. These tournaments attract sportfisherman from all over the world. Even if you don’t participate in the fishing, you can still feel the excitement as you watch the boats come in and weigh their catches, followed by, of course the eating!! Cabrilla, who owns the nautical store on 30th, which supplies all the tournaments with shirts and hats, was kind enough to provide a link to this webpage, http://www.granslamdelcaribe.com/calendario.html, it lists all the tournaments in the state, entry fees, and even shows some record winning catches.
