Lionfish Tournament Results
Cozumel hosted our first ever Lionfish Tournament last Sunday, and over 50 divers participated. In only 5 hours 279 lionfish were removed from Cozumel’s reefs. The tournament ran from 9 am to 2 pm, with the awards being given out in a 3 pm ceremony. A big congratulations to the crew of the boat “Lo-Ha,” Elvis Escalante Yam, Juan José Morales Castillo, and Gilmer Azueta Núñez, who extracted 115 lionfish, winning the grand prize of $8,000 pesos, for the most Lionfish caught. The same team, also won in the second category, extracting a lionfish that weighed 420 grams and was 32.4 centimeters in length.
This tournament was especially important, since it is an innovative way to attempt to rid our waters of this voracious predator. Since Lionfish are not indigenous to the area, they have no natural enemies, and will eat almost any other fish encountered. They are also extremely fertile, laying over 30,000 eggs at a time. All lionfish caught were dissected, and their stomach contents examined in an attempt to better understand the lionfish’s habits. Last Tuesday, Marine Biologists and the National Marine Park, presented some of the findings, as well as additional information to interested Marine Park guides.
Cozumel anfitrión del primer torneo del Pez León, el pasado domingo, donde participaron más de 50 buzos. En sólo 5 horas 279 Pez León se capturaron de los arrecifes de Cozumel. El torneo empezó a las 9 am y termino a las 2 pm, con grandes premios que se repartieron en una ceremonia a las 3 pm. Una gran felicitación a la tripulación del barco "Lo-Ha," Elvis Escalante Yam, Juan José Morales Castillo y Gilmer Azueta Núñez, que extrajeron 115 pez León, ganando el gran premio de $ 8.000 pesos, para la mayor cantidad de pez León capturados. El mismo equipo, también ganó la segunda categoría, con la captura de un Pez León que pesaba 420 gramos y fue de 32,4 cm de longitud.
Este torneo fue especialmente importante, ya que es una forma innovadora para intentar eliminar de nuestras aguas a este voraz depredador. Dado que no es endémico de la zona el Pez León, no tienen depredadores naturales y va a comer cualquier otro tipo de peces que se le atraviese. También son muy fértiles, con una puesta de 30.000 huevos en un solo desove. Todos los Pez León capturados fueron diseccionado, y su contenido estomacal examinado en un intento de entender sus hábitos del pez León. El pasado martes, biólogos marinos y el Parque Marino, presentó algunas de las conclusiones, así como información adicional para los guías de Parque Marino.
  
Cozumel Tourism Once Again on the Rise
Cozumel, and the entire Yucatan Peninsula, is recovering quickly from last year’s Swine Flu epidemic and the global economic crisis, and economic experts are predicting that with the upcoming spring break over 25,000 tourists will arrive in Cancun alone. According to MSNBC “February saw 85 percent of Cancun’s 28,000 rooms filled, a sign of this area’s speedy recovery from 2009, when 1 million fewer visitors came than in a typical year.”
While Cozumel doesn’t have the “Spring Break King” reputation that Cancun carries, this week Cozumel was visited by 25 cruise ships, and hotel occupancy rates remain at a consistant 80%. With such upcoming events as the Festival of Cedral in April, and the annual fishing tournament, “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas”, Cozumel’s tourism season, is also expected to re-bound.
Cozumel y toda la Península de Yucatán, se recupera rápidamente de la epidemia de gripe del año pasado y la crisis económica mundial, expertos económicos están prediciendo que con las próximas vacaciones 25.000 turistas llegarán a Cancún así como los spring breaks . De acuerdo con MSNBC "febrero estuvo al 85 por ciento de habitaciones de 28.000 de Cancún, un signo de pronta recuperación de esta área de 2009, cuando llegó menos de 1 millón de visitantes que en un año típico."
Cozumel mientras que no tiene la reputación de "rey de spring breakers" que llega de Cancún, Cozumel esta semana fue visitado por 25 barcos de crucero, y las tasas de ocupación de los hoteles siguen siendo de un 80% promedio. New Ferry Slated to Commence Operations in April
The new ferry company, “Isla de Paz” has announced plans to begin operations at the end of April, starting with 3 new boats, with a capacity for 250 passengers each. The new company is planning on starting with a economical fare of only $50 pesos.
La nueva compañía de transbordadores, "Isla de Paz" ha anunciado planes para empezar las operaciones a finales de abril, empezando por 3 barcos nuevos, con una capacidad para 250 pasajeros cada uno. La nueva compañía está planeando comenzando con una tarifa económica de sólo $ 50 pesos.
Date Announced for Annual Humane Society Art Auction
The date of the Annual Art Auction for the Humane Society has been announced. The event will take place on Friday March 26th starting at 7 pm, and will take place at the Gallery Istanbul, located right on the waterfront, downstairs from the Casa Mexicana Hotel. Entrance, to this long awaited event, will be $10 usd or 120 pesos. Beer and wine complimentary. This year’s event features 2 silent auctions and one live auction. Se ha anunciado la fecha de la subasta anual de arte para la Socidad Humanitaria. El evento tendrá lugar el viernes, 26 de marzo, comenzando a las 7 pm y tendrá lugar en la Galería Estambul, situada en la zona ribereña, planta baja del Hotel Casa Mexicana. PROFECO Releases Results
Profeco, the consumer protection agency, has announced that over $27 million pesos were returned to consumers in Quintana Roo 2009. In Cozumel alone, $1millon 3 hundred thousand pesos were returned with Profeco receiving 300 consumer complaints here in the island.
Profeco, “Procuraduria Federal de Consumidor,” has both a webpage in English and Spanish and has the ability to fine merchants who have been deemed to have fraudulent business practices.
Profeco, la Agencia de protección del consumidor, ha anunciado que más $ 27 millones de pesos fueron devueltos a los consumidores en Quintana Roo el año de 2009. En Cozumel por sí sola, $ 1million 300.000 pesos fueron devueltos por Profeco al recibir 300 quejas de consumidor aquí en la isla.

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Jordan & Heidy
Jordan is a handsome, one year old Pointer mix. Jordan was found in the street (30 Ave close to CFE) and brought to the shelter by a concerned citizen. In spite of his youth, Jordan is a very easy, well mannered dog. He is alert, energetic and playful, and yet he measures himself somewhat, which is great as he is a pretty big boy! Gets along just fine with all species, humans included of course. Caption for his photo: “Yup, definitely a tick”
This little princess, Heidy the cat, was found by a volunteer in the street. She is healthy, sweet and loving, and wants a lot of attention. She purrs loudly the moment you take her out of the carrier. Two months old, soon to be spayed, probably has a home but still looking for the best family possible. She is a darling thing.

In other animal news, Sonny and Cher, the kittens that Deb Bollag, had rescued have been taken to Laura who runs Coco's Cat Rescue in Playa Del Carmen, where they will hopefully find a forever home.
Jordan es un perro muy guapo, cruza de Pointer, de 1 año de edad. Lo encontraron en la Ave 30 cerca de la CFE. A pesar de su juventud, Jordan es un perro muy fácil y bien educado. Es avispado, activo y juguetón, y a la vez es medido con su fuerza, lo cual es muy bueno porque es bastante grande el muchacho! Es muy amable con animales y humanos. El título de su foto es: “Ajá, definitivamente una garrapata”
Esta princesita, la gatita Heidy, fue encontrada en la calle por una voluntaria. Está sana, es dulce y hermosa, y le encantan los apapachos. Ronrronea a todo volúmen en cuanto la saca uno de su jaulita. Tiene unos dos meses y será esterilizada en estos días. Ha habido uno que otro interesado, pero seguimos buscando a la mejor familia posible. Es un dulce.

Was pass'n by Blue Angel Resort on Monday and found some "Paint'n Pals". Some local folks and some not locals meet there once a week & practice their skills with watercolors......What a nice bunch......sometimes they go early and meet for coffee and some stay for Lunch........have ya tried Eve'a Kitchen Sink Salad..........I could eat it everyday.......and how nice of Eva and Rob to open there view for the painters.....
Than again on Tuesday was pass'n by again at Blue Angel Resort and this nice lady Desiree was teaching a Yoga class. At 7:30 am...Thursdays too..
Have you checked out the new Palapa restaurant on 65 between 1 & 13 "La Jarocha" I bet weve tried everything on the menu, all excellant.
Here that there 's some real competition with a couple of Americanos in the jewelry making department............Here's the deal.........there's this guy that make’s earrings outta beer / soda bottle caps, well he doesn’t really want show anybody how to make them....(just likes to do a litt'l brag'n) ...soooooooooooooooo here's my challenge,,,,,,show up at this Friday’s Happy Hour (El Cid La Ceiba 6:30 – 10 pm) with YOUR beer bottle cap earrings and well have a contest! Earrings must be made from recycled beer/pop bottle tops or a beer/pop can. The administrator and her hubby will be judges! This is a real competition here.......Prizes will be awarded!,,,,,,,No the prizes won’t be as big as the Prizes awarded to the Lion Fish hunters, but it will be fun!
Oh que buenos momentos tuve esta semana....
Lovie me dejo esta semana pasada para ir a gringolandia asegurándose de que no se fueran a congelar las tuberías y poner unos pesos más en nuestros bolsillos para gastar aquí. Pero mis amigos no me dejaron solita
Fue a pasear a Blue Angel Resort el lunes y me encontré a algunos "Paint'n Pals. Estas personas locales y algunos no locales se juntaron allí una vez por semana y practicaron sus habilidades con acuarelas........ Algunas veces llegaron temprano para tomar café y algunas personas ya habían almorzado........ Ya probaron la ensalada de Eva fregadero de la cocina.......... riquísima que puedo comer diario....... y qué agradable de Eva y Rob dejen pasar al hotel para ver a los pintores.....
Y el martes en Blue Angel Resort encontramos a esta agradable dama Desiree dando una clase de yoga. A las 7: 30 am....y jueves tambien.
Ya degusto el nuevo restaurante Palapa "La Jarocha" 65 avenida entre 1 y 13 probamos casi todo el menú y todo esta delicioso.
Hay una competencia de manualidades entre algunos americanos sobre el arte de la joyería ............ el trato es......... hay un chico que hace los aretes de corcho latas de cerveza o de refrescos, así que él no quiere compartir su secreto de cómo hacerlas.... (el está orgulloso de su arte).. entonces aquí está el chisme ,,,,,, llega este viernes a la hora feliz (Hotel El Cid La Ceiba 6 pm – 9 pm) con tu arete hecho de corcho latas de cerveza y vamos a tener un concurso! Los Aretes deben hacerse de corcho latas recicladas /pop o una cerveza/pop puede. La administradora y mi maridito seremos jueces! Esto es una competencia real...... se otorgarán premios!,,,,,,, no como los premios tan grandes como el premio otorgado a los cazadores de pez León, pero va a ser divertido y entretenido!

Fundraiser for "Hogar de Ancanios de Cozumel" Saturday
Janie Robertson, owner of Las Lunas Bed & Breakfast will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit the “Hogar de Ancanios de Cozumel” this Saturday, March 6th, from 6 – 8 pm. The Director of the Home will be on-hand with pictures and information. Please come by and view the pictures and information Las Lunas is located on 40 North between 4 and 6.
Janie got involved with the organization last year, when she dressed her dachshunds up in holiday outfits and brought Christmas cookies to the home last year. Janie was impressed with the dedication the staff had to stretch their meager resources to take care the residents, none of whom have any family or financial support. She’s since been encouraging her friends and clients to visit and bring donations of fresh fruit and produce for the residents. This year, Janie has compiled a list of what the residents really need and is opening her home for this fundraiser/donation event. Either new or used, twin bed sheets, blankets, bedspreads, pillows, pillowcases, canned food, box milk, fruit, oatmeal, crackers, baby food, cleaning products, and personal care items.
