May is for Birdwatching

Cuzamil or Kùutsmil in Modern Maya literally translates as “The Island of Swallows,” however, the entire Yucatan Peninsula is a haven to bird watchers for the variety of birdlife encountered in this area.  Cozumel has over 250 different varieties of birds, three of which are endemic, and only found here.   Included in this is the beautiful hummingbird, the Cozumel Emerald and what is considered to be the world’s most critically endangered bird in the world:  The Cozumel Thrasher.  If you’ve never gone birdwatching in Cozumel before, this is a great time, since April and May are considered to  be peak migration times.  Here is a complete list of birds found on this island   If you’re not ready to go out into the wild, here’s some great photos of locally identifiable birds, by Luis Kú Quiñones http://mvhunt.net/johnnature-cozumel-mexico-birds.htm.

"Mas Pasos para Mas Vacunas" Walk for Polio Next Saturday

The Cozumel Rotarian Club is hosting “Mas Pasos por Mas Vacunas (More Steps for more vaccinations)” a charitable walk and fund drive against Polio.  The Walk consists of a 12 kilometer walk to raise funds to eradicate Polio throughout the world, and will take place next Saturday, May 22nd, starting at 8:30 am and will start at the statue of the Swallow located on Av. 65 in the north section of town.  Funds raised here in Cozumel are added to the International Rotarian Drive. 

El club de rotarios de Cozumel alberga "Mas Pasos por Mas Vacunas” una caminata de caridad y una unidad de fondo contra la poliomielitis.  La marcha se compone de un paseo de 12 kilómetros para recaudar fondos para la erradicación de la poliomielitis en todo el mundo y tendrá lugar el próximo sábado, 22 de mayo, comenzando a las 8: 30 am y dará comienzo en  la estatua de la golondrina, ubicada en la Av. 65 en la sección norte de la ciudad. Los  Fondos recaudados aquí en Cozumel se agregan a la unidad internacional de rotarios.  En 1985 Rotary Clubs en todo el mundo recaudó más de 120 millones de dólares para comprar vacunas en todo el mundo.

Humane Society Story of the Week

This sweet eyed dog was the found by our kennel manager first thing in the morning one day. She had been tied to our fence during the night. Sophie is about 2 years old and looks like she has had a couple of litters. She has a skin condition around her neck, probably due in part to having been kept tied all day. It will take a while to get her fully well, but when her new fur comes out it will be as black and silky as the rest of her coat. This is a great inside dog as they shed very little. Would’t you love to share your favorite couch with this single black female? 

Esta negrita de ojos dulces fue encontrada por nuestro encargado de perreras muy temprano un día al llegar al refugio. La habían amarrado a la reja durante la noche. Su edad aproximada es de dos años y parece haber tenido algunas camadas. Sophie tiene problema de piel alrededor del cuello, probablemente a causa de haber estado amarrada todo el día. Está mejorando poco a poco, y cuando le salga su nuevo pelaje será tan negro y sedoso como el del resto de su cuerpo. Este tipo de perro es perfecto para que viva dentro de casa, ya que pelechan muy poco. No te encantaría tener a esta morenita descansando a tu lado en tu sillón favorito?

This kitty with a pompous name had chosen a beachfront house as her residence. Not bad taste. She was reported to us and we tried to negotiate to TNR her (trap, neuter and release), but being a rental villa the management was not sure it would work with the owners. So, Charlotte will be content with another residence, even if it is not 5 stars, as long as they love her. 

Esta gatita con nombre rimbombante había escogido vivir en una gran casona a la orilla del mar. No mal gusto. Tratamos de negociar que se regresara al lugar después de esterilizarla, pero como es una casa de renta al turismo la administración no estaba segura de que los dueños estuvieran de acuerdo. De manera que Charlotte aceptará otra residencia aunque no sea de 5 estrellas, siempre y cuando la quieran y la apapachen.

Cozumel 4 You Upcoming Scavenger Hunt

Cozumel 4 You is hosting a Scavenger Hunt/ Happy Hour  next Friday  May 21st from 6 – 9 pm, starting at the Aqua Bar at the Hotel Flamingo.  This will be a walking scavenger hunt in downtown Cozumel, in which participants will be given a series of clues that will teach you some  of the interesting culture and history of downtown, as well as try different drink specials, appetizers and check out several different locations all in one evening!  There will even be prizes for the winning team!  If you’d like to participate in this event, either as a contestant team, or sponsor a prize, you can do so by contacting laura@czm4you.com. There will also be an open registration at the time of the event.

"The Story of Friendship in a Dump" Goes National

Monica Velasco, President of the Cozumel Humane Society, working in conjunction with IFAW produced a video filmed and edited by videographer Edgar Mendoza from photosuggestion.com which tells the touching story about “El Garbacho” and the abandoned animals he lovingly has cared for during his 20 year stay at Cozumel's municipal garbage dump. In addition to the video, the story was related by Monica Velasco in a two part article which appeared originally in Cozumel 4 You. Thanks to journalist Antonio Rea, it was also published fully, divided in 3 parts in the PorEsto newspaper. This week, the remarkable story was also picked up by El Universal, a national newspaper out of Mexico City.

Cozumel Chrysalis Group Looking for School Supplies

The Cozumel Chrysalis Group is entering its 15th year assisting low income Cozumel families with the cost of educating their children. Even though these students attend public schools, the cost of uniforms, shoes and school supplies presents a hardship for many Cozumel families.  Chrysalis supports over 200 students annually. These students receive school supplies and vouchers accepted by local merchants for their uniforms and shoes. Chrysalis wishes to thank these local merchants, Salome, Central de Telas and 3 Hermanos, for supporting Chrysalis over the years.As Chrysalis prepares for the 2010-2011 academic year, the current inventory of donated school supplies reveals a need for about 170 boxes of colored markers, 8-10 in a pack. Every student needs a new set every year. Please note, these are NOT colored pencils, but colored markers.
