Campaign for Cozumel Presidente Officially Underway

The campaign for Cozumel’s new Presidente is officially underway.  Although the elections aren’t until July, candidates have already been attending public events, beach clean-ups and visiting Cozumel neighborhoods.  Several national parties, as well as smaller, and even local political groups, are represented in this year’s race. 

Some of the candidates include:  Fredy Marrufo Martin,  (PRI - Partido Revolucionario Institucional)  Roberto Olan Carrera (PAN - Partido Acción Nacional) Ramón Escalante Cervera (PRD - Partido de la Revolución Democrática), Eliot Reyes Novelo (PVEM - Partido Verde Ecologista de México), and Cesar Trejo Vázquez (MC - Movimiento Ciudadano).

Elections traditionally take place on the first Sunday in July, which in this case is July 6th.  The Presidente’s term is 3 years, with no re-election permitted.

La campaña para elegir al nuevo alcalde de Cozumel ha iniciado. Aunque las elecciones no se llevarán a cabo sino hasta el mes de julio, los candidatos ya se han presentando en eventos públicos, en limpieza de playas y visitando las colonias de Cozumel. Algunos de los partidos nacionales, así como grupos políticos más pequeños e incluso locales, ya cuentan con representación en la carrera de este año. 

Algunos de los candidatos incluyen a: Fredy Marrufo Martin (PRI - Partido Revolucionario Institucional), Roberto Olan Carrera (PAN - Partido Acción Nacional), Ramón Escalante Cervera (PRD - Partido de la Revolución Democrática), Eliot Reyes Novelo (PVEM - Partido Verde Ecologista de México)  y César Trejo Vázquez (MC - Movimiento Ciudadano).

Tradicionalmente las elecciones se llevan a cabo el primer domingo del mes de julio, en este caso serán el 6 de julio. El mandato del presidente municipal es de 3 años, no se permite la reelección.

New Construction in Cozumel's Northern Hotel Zone Approved

Plans have been approved for a new 5 star hotel complex, called “Isla Cabañas,” to be located in Cozumel’s northern hotel zone.  The $51 million dollar project will be completed in two stages, with the first slated to start in September of this year.  In fact, “Isla Cabañas,” will be built  on the same location, where the “Hotel Cabañas del Caribe” was located, which was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005.  This is the first new hotel to be constructed in six years, since the Wyndham,  now called the Secrets Aura,  was constructed in 2007. 

Se aprueba una nueva construcción en la zona hotelera norte de Cozumel

Ya se han aprobado los proyectos para un complejo hotelero de 5 estrellas llamado “Isla Cabañas” que se ubicará en la zona hotelera norte de Cozumel. El proyecto, cuyo costo es de $51 millones de dólares, se realizará en dos etapas: se prevé que la primera inicie en el mes de septiembre del presente año. De hecho, "Isla Cabañas" se construirá en el mismo lugar donde se encontraba el hotel " Cabañas del Caribe", destruido por el Huracán Wilma en el año 2005. Este es el primer hotel nuevo a construirse después de seis años desde el Wyndham, ahora llamado Secretos Aura,  fuera construido en el año 2007.

Cozumel's Tourism Department Implements Public Awareness Campaign for Parking Meters

Cozumel’s Department of Tourism has launched a public awareness campaign directed toward island visitors who rent cars and other vehicles.  Designed to educate tourists on the importance of paying the parking meters on the downtown waterfront area, signs are being distributed to hotels, ferries, and other public areas.  The overall goal is for  tourists to avoid losing precious vacation time having vehicles booted and paying fines while in Cozumel.

La Dirección de Turismo implementa campaña de sensibilización pública respecto a los parquímetros

La Dirección de Turismo en Cozumel ha puesto lanzado una campaña de concientización dirigida a quienes visitan la Isla y rentan automóviles u otros vehículos. Diseñada para educar a los turistas sobre la importancia de pagar por los parquímetros en zona costera de la ciudad, la información se distribuye entre hoteles, barcos y otros ámbitos públicos. El objetivo general es que los turistas eviten perder valioso tiempo durante sus vacaciones en Cozumel debido a que a sus vehículos les ha sido colocada la bota y se vean en la necesidad de ir a cubrir las sanciones.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Meet Manteca!  This beautiful tabby is a nice male, he was admitted at 7 weeks old. Found in the streets fending for himself with his siblings, by a volunteer of the Humane Society. So sweet and playful and loves his brothers! Admitted on May 8th, 2012!!  He has grown up at the shelter while waiting for his forever home. He is very sweet and likes to be pet.

Petunia - This female pit bull is 1 and 1/2 years old, her weight was 15.9 kg at admission. Her family took her to animal control and gave her up, saying they were sick of her skin problem that was not getting better with the vet they were seeing nor their own tries with using burnt engine oil on her (this is not a cure, it only hurts the dog). They left her there knowing her fate would be euthanasia. These were not good owners at all!!! She is severely underweight also! Animal Control asked us if we could help as she is a very nice friendly dog and quite social. She has demodexx mange, an easy cure with the RIGHT treatment. We are going to pull this girl through and hopefully find her a great forever home! Admission date May 2, 2013.

Adoptee of the Week: Chucho with his new family, it's important to tell that this is an adoption thanks to the effort of our volunteers at Mega Meow, CONGRATULATIONS for helping us to promote happy endings. Chucho had received a couple of adoption offers, but they fell through, whe we called to ask about them, they told us that after giving some thought, they had decided not to have a pet. It is very important to take informed decisions with the family in order to make a responsible adoption, but we would be grateful if you let us know at 9871123376, so that the pet has more opportunities to get a forever home.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Conoce a Manteca! Este hermoso tabby (atigrado) es un lindo macho, fue admitido a las 7 semanas de edad. Lo encontró un voluntario de la sociedad humanitaria, en las calles tratando de sobrevivir por si solo con sus hermanitos. ¡¡Admitido el 8 de Mayo de 2012!! Ha crecido en el refugio y aun espera su hogar por siempre. Es muy dulce y le gustan las caricias.

Petunia,esta  hembra pitbull de 1 1/2 años de edad, pesaba 15.9kg al admitirla al refugio. Su familia la llevó a Control Animal, diciendo que estaban cansados de su problema de piel y que no se curaba ni con el veterinario que veían ni con su remedio casero de aceite quemado (esto no cura, sólo lastima a los perros). La dejaron aún sabiendo que sería eutanasiada. Esos no son buenos dueños. Además está muy baja de peso. Control Animal nos preguntó si la podríamos ayudar, ya que es muy sociable y buen perro. Su sarna es demodésica, que es muy fácil de curar con el tratamiento adecuado. Vamos a sacar adelante a esta chica y estamos esperanzados a encontrarle un hogar por siempre. Fecha de Admisión: 2 de Mayo de 2013.

Adoptado de la Semana: Chucho con su nueva familia,  cabe mencionar que esto fue posible gracias a los esfuerzos de los voluntarios del Mega Miau FELICIDADES por promover mas finales felices. Chucho, desde hace varios meses recibió un par de peticiones de adopción, pero nunca se concretaron, cuando llamábamos para ver qué pasaba, nos decían que después de haberlo pensado mejor habian decidido no tener mascota. Es muy bueno  tomar deciciones bien informados y enfamilia, para hacer una adopción responsable, pero se agradece informarnos al 9871123376, para que a la mascota no se le resten oportunidades de encontrar su hogar por siempre.

How I Came To Call Cozumel Home, A Series by Island Residents

I have a theory that lovers of Cozumel can instantly recall the exact dates of their first visit. My love affair with the island began January 10 - 17, 1990 - and after my first visit my life was never the same. I went back to Minnesota, and within 6 months I had changed my job, my living situation, and my perspective of the future. As a newly minted airline employee I was fortunate to visit the island often, and my daughter and family enjoyed numerous vacations away from the dark cold Minnesota winters. You know the part in The Wizard of Oz where the film goes from Black and White to vibrant Color? For me, touching down in Cozumel is a lot like that. While the lakes and pinewoods of my youth will always be with me, the natural beauty of the island and her people captivates me as much today as it did 22 years ago. 

In 1996 I was married to a relocated Texan and we happily settled into an adorable little apartment. Seven years passed in the blink of an eye. After many months of searching we found a house to buy thanks to my sister who purchased a nice house in the Independencia neighborhood. On our way to take a tour of her place, we passed a cute little place with a beat up “Se Vende” sign tacked up in the corner. That was over 10 years ago. Even though the hubby “va-moosed” a while back, I have thoroughly enjoyed carving out my vision of domestic paradise. For me, a walk on a deserted beach, or a cup of coffee in my garden can be a religious experience. A trip to the phone company can result in lifelong friendships. Only 2 doors down from my big sis, and surrounded on all sides by sweet families, life in Cozumel has proven safe, exciting, happy, and active. My friends and I honor nearly all traditions, foreign and domestic. We welcome our departed on the Day of the Dead, smile across Thanksgiving tables, decorate our houses with all manner of Christmas glitz, find the baby in the Rosca, and blow the doors off the place for Carnaval.  Underneath it all beats a philanthropic heart and community spirit unparalleled in its generosity.  When called upon, Cozumeleños readily show up to support a good cause, help someone in need, offer congratulations, or a consoling embrace.  

No matter where one choses to hang a hat, I firmly believe that your life, your happiness, and your regrets are all exactly what you make them. I have found good company in this special place, where the amazing beauty found in nature go hand in hand with the spirit of her citizenry. The beaches, waters, nature preserves, restaurants, music, art, culture, and social whirl ensure that life in Cozumel need never be dull.  I remain humbly captivated by it all.

Kathy Watts and her cohorts in crime created The Trashy Little Group to help remove some of the trash on Cozumel’s beaches.  The group has removed 2,500 bags of garbage, and increased awareness for recycling and environmental causes here on Cozumel.  Once a month, the group gathers together to clean a selected area.  Not only is it a worthy cause and a fun event, but it’s also a great chance to win prizes donated by very generous local sponsers.  To find out more, check out their facebook page.

Cómo se convirtió Cozumel en mi hogar. Una serie escrita por habitantes de la Isla

Tengo la teoría de que quienes aman a Cozumel pueden recordar de inmediato la fecha exacta de su primera visita. Mi romance con la Isla comenzó del 10 al 17 de enero del año 1990, y después de mi primera visita, mi vida no volvió a ser igual. Regresé a Minnesota y en un lapso de 6 meses ya había cambiado de trabajo, el entorno de mi vida y mi perspectiva acerca del futuro. Como empleada de una nueva y flamante aerolínea tuve la fortuna de visitar la isla con frecuencia, y mi hija y mi familia disfrutaron numerosas vacaciones lejos del obscuro frío del invierno de Minnesota. En la película “El Mago de Oz”, ¿recuerdan la parte donde la película cambia de los tonos blanco y negro a vibrantes colores? Algo muy similar me sucede al aterrizar en Cozumel. No obstante que los lagos y los bosques de pinos de mi juventud permanecerán siempre conmigo, la belleza natural de la Isla y su gente me cautiva tanto ahora como hace 22 años.

En el año 1966 contraje matrimonio con un oriundo del estado de Texas, reubicado, y felizmente nos instalamos en un pequeño y adorable departamento. Transcurrieron siete años en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. Después de muchos meses de buscar, encontramos una casa en venta gracias a mi hermana quien había adquirido una casa muy agradable en la colonia Independencia. En el trayecto para la casa de mi hermana, pasamos por un lugar lindo y pequeño que tenía un anuncio de “Se Vende” clavado en la esquina. Eso fue hace 10 años. Y a pesar de que el marido hace tiempo deseaba “poner los pies en polvorosa”, he disfrutado muchísimo labrar mi visión del paraíso doméstico. La caminata en una playa desierta o una taza de café en mi jardín pueden ser una experiencia religiosa. Ir a la compañía de teléfonos puede dar lugar a amistades de por vida. A 2 casas de la casa de mi hermana mayor y rodeada de adorables familias, la vida en Cozumel ha probado ser segura, emocionante, alegre y activa. Mis amigas y yo observamos casi todas las tradiciones, tanto extranjeras como nacionales. Damos la bienvenida a nuestros difuntos el Día de los Muertos, sonreímos de un lado al otro en las mesas del Día de Gracias, decoramos nuestras casas con gran esplendor en Navidad, encontramos al bebé de la Rosca y echamos la casa por la ventana para el Carnaval. En el fondo late un corazón filantrópico y el espíritu comunitario sin paralelo en su generosidad. Cuando se les requiere, los cozumeleños aparecen voluntariamente para apoyar una buena causa, ayudar a quien lo necesita, ofrecer felicitaciones o dar un abrazo de consuelo.

No importa el lugar que uno elija para colgar un sombrero, estoy convencida de que toda su vida, toda su felicidad y todas sus aflicciones son todos exactamente como usted los hace. He encontrado buena compañía en este lugar especial, donde la maravillosa belleza de la naturaleza va de la mano con el espíritu ciudadano. Las playas, las aguas, las reservas naturales, los restaurantes, la música, el arte, la cultura y el bullicio social  garantizan que la vida en Cozumel nunca será aburrida. Continúo humildemente cautivada por todo ello.

Kathy Watts y sus secuaces, crearon el grupo The Trashy Little Group con el objeto de ayudar a eliminar algo de la basura que aparece en las playas de Cozumel. El grupo ya ha retirado más de 2,500 bolsas de basura, y ha elevado la toma de conciencia acerca del reciclaje y las causas en pro del medio ambiente en Cozumel. Una vez al mes, el grupo se reúne para limpiar un área designada. No sólo es una causa noble, sino también una gran oportunidad para ganar premios donados por patrocinadores locales muy generosos. Irma’s Mayan Word of the Week - I think you will like the mayan word of the week, especially since we are getting to that time of th year where we only want to wear bikinis, because of the heat. The word is TUCH which means bellybutton, so go around and tell everyone wearing a bikini, you have a nice Tuch!  .Irma Portilla de Cantarell, owner of the AXA Insurance located on Av. 30 and 11, has been offering her insight into the Mayan language on the Cozumel 4 You facebook group.  Stay tuned for the next lesson. 

Cozumel Turtle Season Update  -Cozumel is fortunate to be a protected breeding area to two species of turtles, the loggerhead (careta careta) and the green turtle (chelonian mydas). During the months of May through September these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on Cozumel’s eastern beaches. To find out more about the program, or to get involved, please contact Rafael Chacon, the Director of the Municipal Department of Ecology,  greenpez@hotmail.com or call 872 5795. We'll keep you updated as turtle season progresses.

Irma y la palabra en Maya de la semana -  Creo que les va a gustar la palabra maya de la semana, sobre todo porque estamos llegando a esa época del año durante la cual sólo queremos usar bikinis, a causa del calor. La palabra es TUCH que significa ombligo. Así que cuando veas a todas las que usan bikini, diles: “¡Tienes un bonito tuch!”. Actualización de la temporada de tortuga en Cozumel – Cozumel tiene la fortuna de ser un área protegida para la cría de dos especies de tortugas, la tortuga caguama (Careta careta) y la tortuga verde (Chelonia mydas). Durante los meses de mayo a septiembre estas tortugas llegan a tierra para poner sus huevos en las playas ubicadas en el oriente de Cozumel.
