Results of Cozumel’s 45th Fishing Tournament “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas”

May 14th and 15th  marked the 45th Annual Cozumel Fishing Tournament, the “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas.”   Considered the island’s biggest fishing tournament, this year over 160 boats participated. The two day tournament took place from 8 am – 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday, and the downtown pier, or Muelle Fiscal, was filled with well-wishers and participants as the boats came in for weigh-in. 
This year’s first place winner was the “Gotcha” who pulled in both a blue marlin and a sail fish (the sailfish was also catch and release) with a grand total of 40,950 points.  The “Miguelito” came in second place and the “Happy Fisherman” came in third.  Prizes are awarded to the first 10 boats in the competition.  For more information, or to check out the official results, check out the tournament webpage.

This was the fourth year that this important tournament offered a catch and release option.

Resultados del 45º torneo de pesca “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas”

El 45º torneo anual de pesca, el “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas” se llevó a cabo en Mayo 14 y 15. El torneo de pesca considerado como el más grande de la Isla contó con la participación de 160 embarcaciones. El torneo de dos días se realizó de las 8 a.m. a las 5 p.m. el sábado y el domingo, mientras llegaban las embarcaciones para el pesaje, en el muelle fiscal abundaba gente llena de buenos deseos así como de participantes.    
 
La embarcación ganadora del primer lugar este año fue “Gotcha” con un marlín azul y un pez vela (el pez vela también era pescar y soltar), con un gran total de 40,950 puntos. “Miguelito” llegó en segundo lugar, y “Happy Fisherman” en tercero. Art in Cozumel   by Greg Dietrih, Owner Galeria Azul

Art in Cozumel…I  have been invited to write a monthly newsletter on the subject for the readers of Cozumel 4 You. Not sure how this will turn out, but I am willing to give it a try. I have also decided to share these duties with my wife, Liliana Macotela. We will probably alternate the task, one month I’ll write, the next month she will write. This way you get a perspective of Art in Cozumel from two different people, cultures, and genders. So, here goes…

I think for the introductory article, I would like to explain my art history here on the island, and then will talk about where and what you can see on the island in terms of galleries or public displays or art.

I am a glass artist. I moved here in 1998 with my engraving machine and a whole bunch of glass to engrave on. Specifically, I blow glass with layers of colored glass and then engrave into those layers with diamond wheels. This is called cameo engraving. 

When I arrived to the island, I started producing work and looking for a place to sell it. Well, that was not as easy as expected. There has always been a gallery or two on the island, but they come and go… it is not an easy business here. The local people are not big into purchasing art, and the tourism market, well, it’s just hard to get your artwork seen. Of course, if you could afford a waterfront location, it’d be easy, but that is not a possibility due to high rents.

In the beginning, I started out putting some of my engraved glass pieces in a car rental agency that was owned by some friends of mine. Not the ideal place for an art display, but it was a start. Next, I showed my work to the people at the Museum of the Island, and they responded by giving me an exhibition of my work in the year 2000. I sold a few pieces there and decided that the only way to show my work to the people that were interested would be to open my own gallery, so that’s what I did.

I opened Galeria Azul in the downstairs of my home on 15th avenue, not exactly the beaten path, but it was my studio and gallery rolled up into one. I started putting my work in different restaurants and coffee shops with my business cards in hopes that the people would visit the gallery. This worked, but not real well. I was averaging about one client a month for the first 6 months. So, I bit the bullet and rented a space on 10th avenue, just behind the square. I managed to keep that open for 8 years, until the world economies crashed and people didn’t have the excess money they did before. So at the end of 2008, I moved the gallery back to my home and studio. I am happy to say that today you can still find me there.

That is how I went about getting my art work seen. Art sales can be very sporadic and it’s hard to count on it as an income. Most artists need a full time job, or at least one or two part time jobs, to get by. I myself work occasionally as a tour guide to help make ends meet. So how do other artists do it?

Well, there are two main spaces available for exhibitions and then some other alternatives.
-There is the Museum of the Island located on the waterfront on the corner of 6th street. They offer three different spaces for artists, so there are normally at any given moment, 3 different exhibitions to be seen. The 1st floor and the 2nd floor are able to be seen from 8am till 11pm. There is also another room at the back of the 1st floor where they have exhibits, but it is only open from 9am - 4pm Monday thru Friday.
-There is also The Casa de la Cultura on the corner of Juarez Avenue and 50th  Street, They have a large exhibition area that usually has an individual or a collective art exhibition on display. Their hours are 2:30 pm - 9pm, Monday – Friday.
Aside from these two public, non-profit locations, there are some other alternatives. There are a number of artist studios or galleries in the downtown area.
-There is my studio/gallery, Galeria Azul on 15th avenue North between 8th and 10th streets. The hours are 11am – 7pm Monday through Friday, or any other time by making an appointment. Telephone: 869-0963. Here you will see glass art and paintings by myself and a few other artists as well. There is also a selection of glass jewelry.
- Galo Art Studio is on the corner of 25th avenue and 1st street. Here you will find paintings and prints from two very talented artists, Galo Ramirez and Niurka Guzman.
Hours are 9am – 3pm, and 5pm – 9pm, however, it may be best to call to be sure someone is there since sometimes they are out doing installations or murals. Their numbers are Galo 987-103-8641 and Niurka 987-103-7176.
- Mayan Batik Factory located on Adolfo Rosado Salas between the waterfront and 5th avenue. Carlos paints a lot of whimsical “Day of the Dead” works as well as batik style hand painted t-shirts.
- A new store has opened up on 10th avenue between Rosado Salas and 1st street. It is called CuCu RuCuCu. They have artwork as well as very original handmade crafts. The hours are Monday – Saturday 10:30am – 2pm and 5pm – 8pm.
There are also many other businesses where you will find artists displaying their works. This is a win/win situation for business owner and for the artist. The business has nice art on the walls, and the works are for sale, benefiting the artist. Here is a list of some of those spots…
The Coffee, Funky Bazaar, Kelley’s Sports Bar, Chardonnay Restaurant, Woody’s Bar and Grill, Magenta, Villas Las Anclas, restaurant La Mentirosa, restaurant La Antigua, restaurant La Paloma, and restaurant Amparo.

If I failed to mention any, I apologize and please let me know and I will include it next time.

Cozumel has also been beautified recently by public murals on the walls of many downtown streets. This started a year ago and is still growing. However, that is the subject for another article to be written in the near future.

Before closing this month’s segment, I would like to express my sadness for two of Cozumel’s artists that have passed away this last year, Mariano Petit de Murat and Kim Pasquine. They were both very talented and left us at a ridiculously young age. May they rest in peace.

Greg Dietrich first came to Cozumel in 1988 to scuba dive and enjoy the beaches of the east side of the island. He immediately fell in love with the island and its people. His dive master convinced him he should look into buying a house here…turns out his other job was as a real estate agent. Long story short, he bought a house here on that very first visit. Greg came back to Cozumel at least twice a year for the next 10 years.

In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything.

By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day and just celebrated 17 happy years of living here on the island with his wife, Liliana.

Arte en Cozumel. . . Hemos sido invitados a escribir sobre este tema en un boletín mensual para los lectores de Cozumel 4 You. No estoy seguro de los resultados, pero voy a intentarlo. También he decido compartir esta labor con mi esposa, Liliana Macotela. Es probable que alternemos el trabajo; un mes escribo yo, y al siguiente lo hará ella. De esa manera obtendrán una perspectiva de dos personas, culturas y géneros distintos sobre el Arte en Cozumel. Así que, aquí vamos. . .  

Como artículo de introducción me gustaría explicar mi trayectoria artística en la Isla, y luego platicaremos acerca de dónde y qué puede ver en la Isla, en cuanto a galerías o exhibiciones públicas de arte.

Soy un artista del vidrio. Me mudé aquí en 1998 con mi máquina de grabado y mucho vidrio para realizar los grabados. Me dedico específicamente al vidrio soplado con capas de vidrio de colores y luego grabo sobre esas capas utilizando discos de diamante. A ello se le conoce como técnica de grabado camafeo. 

Cuando llegue a la Isla comencé a producir y a buscar un lugar donde vender. Bueno, eso no fue tan sencillo como lo esperé. Siempre han existido una o dos galerías en la Isla, pero van y vienen. .. y este no es un negocio fácil aquí. Los habitantes locales no gustan mucho de comprar arte, y con el mercado turístico, pues, hay dificultad de que vean las obras. Claro está que en caso de poder pagar un local en el malecón sería más sencillo, pero ello no es posible debido a las rentas elevadas.

Comencé colocando algunas de mis piezas de vidrio en una rentadora de vehículos propiedad de unos amigos. No era el sitio ideal para una exhibición de arte, pero era el comienzo. Después mostré mi trabajo a las personas del Museo de la Isla y en el año 2000 respondieron me permitieron exhibir. Vendí algunas piezas y decidí que la única forma para exhibir mis obras a la gente interesada sería abriendo mi propia galería; y lo hice.

Abrí Galería Azul en la planta baja de mi casa sobre la 15ª Avenida, fuera de la ruta turística, pero era mi estudio y mi galería en un mismo sitio. Comencé a exhibir mis obras en diferentes restaurantes y cafeterías entregando tarjetas de presentación, con la esperanza que la gente visitaría la galería. Esto funcionó, pero no muy bien. Mi promedio durante los 6 primeros meses fue de un cliente al mes. Entonces, hice de tripas corazón y alquilé un local en la 10ª Avenida, justo detrás de la plaza. Logré mantener abierto el local durante 8 años hasta que la economía mundial se desmoronó y la gente dejó de contar con dinero de sobra como antes.  Así que a finales del año 2008 regresé la galería a mi casa y estudio. Me alegra decir que hoy en día aún me pueden encontrar ahí.

Así es como logré que mi trabajo pudiera verse. Las ventas de obras de arte son muy esporádicas y es difícil considerarlas como ingresos. La mayoría de los artistas necesitan un trabajo de tiempo completo, o al menos dos trabajos de medio tiempo para salir adelante. En ocasiones trabajo como guía de turistas para subsistir. ¿Cómo lo logran los otros artistas? 

Existen dos sitios importantes para exhibiciones y algunas otras alternativas.
- El Museo de la Isla, ubicado en el malecón y Calle 6. Ofrecen tres espacios distintos para los artistas por lo que normalmente cuentan 3 exhibiciones. Pueden visitarse el 1er. y 2º  pisos de 8 a.m. a 11 p.m. En la parte posterior del 1er. piso también presentan exhibiciones pero sólo abren de 9 a.m. a 4 p.m., lunes a viernes.
- La Casa de la Cultura, en la esquina de las Avenidas Juárez y 50. Cuentan con una amplia área de exhibición que generalmente presenta arete individual o colectivo. Su horario es 2:30 p. a 9 p.m., lunes a viernes.
Aparte de estos dos sitios públicos sin fines de lucro, existen otras alternativas. En la zona del centro hay varios estudios y galerías.
- Galería Azul, sobre la 15 Avenida Norte entre calles 8 y 10. El horario es 11 a.m. a 7p.m., lunes a viernes; o en cualquier otro momento haciendo una cita. El teléfono es 869-0963. Aquí podrá ver arte en vidrio y pinturas de mi autoría así como de otros artistas. También hay una selección de joyería en vidrio.
- Galo Art Studio, en la esquina de la 25 Avenida y Calle 1. Aquí encontrarán pinturas y grabados de dos artistas muy talentosos: Galo Ramírez y Niurka Guzmán.
El horario es 9 a.m. a 3 p.m. y de 5 p.m. a 9 p.m.; sin embargo, es mejor llamar para asegurarse de que hay alguien ya que en ocasiones se encuentran colocando instalaciones o haciendo murales. Los números son: Galo, 987-103-8641 y Niurka 987-103-7176.
- Mayan Batik Factory, en Adolfo Rosado Salas entre el malecón y la 5ª Avenida. Carlos pinta muchas obras caprichosas del Día de los Muertos así como camisetas estilo batik, pintadas a mano.
- Sobre la Avenida 10 entre Rosado Salas y Calle 1 abrió una tienda nueva que se llama CuCu RuCuCu. Tienen arte hecho a mano muy original. Su horario es lunes a sábado de 10:30 a.m. a 2 p.m. y de 5 p.m. a 8 p.m.
Existen también muchos otros negocios donde pueden encontrar artistas que exhibiendo sus obras. Esta es una situación ganar/ganar para el propietario de la negociación y para el artista. El arte sobre los muros en el negocio es bonito, las obras están a la venta, beneficiando al artista. A continuación, algunos de esos sitios:

En fechas recientes Cozumel fue embellecida con murales públicos en los muros de muchas calles del centro. Esto comenzó hace un año y continúa creciendo. Pero esto es tema para otro artículo en el futuro.

Antes de cerrar el segmento de este mes, quisiera expresar mi tristeza por dos artistas de Cozumel que fallecieron este año: Mariano Petit de Murat y Kim Pasquine. Ambos muy talentosos y nos dejaron siendo aún muy jóvenes. Descansen en paz.

Greg Dietrich llegó a Cozumel en el año 1998 a bucear y disfrutar de las playas en la costa oriental de la Isla. De inmediato se enamoró de la Isla y de su gente. Su guía de buceo lo convenció que buscara una casa para comprar; resulta que su otro trabajo era como agente de bienes raíces. Resumiendo, compró la casa en su primera visita. Durante los siguientes 10 años Greg regresó a Cozumel al menos dos veces al año.

Durante la primavera de 1998, Greg tenía un exitoso negocio de vidrio soplado en Seattle, Washington, una ciudad conocida como el centro del arte en vidrio en los Estados Unidos. La primera noche de sus muy merecidas vacaciones en Marzo, conoció a Liliana Macotela. Este encuentro cambio todo.

A finales de ese año, vendió su negocio, empacó su máquina de grabado y se mudo a la Isla. Abrió Galeria Azul, su estudio de trabajo/galería, en la planta baja de su casa. Contrinúa aquí y recién cumplió 17 años felices de vivir en la Isla con su esposa, Liliana.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Robert - This big boy was abandoned by his owner after they couldn’t keep up with his size and attention demand. The owner was almost kicked out of his home if he didn’t give Robert up. He is very active and playful and loves hugs and being petted.  He’d be a great companion for a runner.

Megan - Female, 2 years, weight 4.3 Kg. Arrived on Dec-15-15: She was abandoned by her owners when they left Cozumel. A neighbor sheltered her and brought her to HSCI because they couldn’t adopt her. She is lovely. Originally she was supposed to be TNR but she has a nice behavior and personality so we kept her

Mascotas de la Semana de la Socieddad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel

Robert – Este gran chico fue abandonado por su propietario ya que no podía manejar lo que su tamaño y atenciones demandaban. Estuvieron a punto de sacar al dueño a patadas de su casa si no renunciaba a Robert. Es sumamente activo y juguetón; le encantan los abrazos y que lo mimen. Será un gran compañero para un corredor. 

Megan – Hembra de 2 años de edad, con un peso de 4.3 kg. Llegó en Dic. 15, 15. Fue abandonada por sus propietarios cuando se fueron de Cozumel. Un vecino le dio abrigo y la trajo a la Sociedad Humanitaria pues no le era posible adoptarla. Es encantadora. Originalmente estaba dentro del plan atrapar-esterilizar-regresar, pero su comportamiento y personalidad han sido tan agradables, que nos la quedamos.

Cozumel’s “Angeles Verdes,” Receive New Transportation

The “Angeles Verdes,” or Green Angels as they are known in English, recently received a new vehicle to assist with roadside rescues.  According to Fernando Valencia Yeh,  who heads up the Angeles Verdes, the older truck had seen much and constant use and was in poor condition.  

It’s estimated that the Angeles Verdes provide an average of 10 rescues a day, the most common being motorcycles and scooters who have accidents. 

The Angeles Verdes currently have 2 vehicles, since the new 2011 truck will retire their older vehicle.

Their services, which are available free-of-charge to both tourists and locals alike, help rescue people experiencing a problem with their vehicles.  Members of the Angeles Verdes have “basic knowledge” and can provide both gasoline or air.  Their services are covered under the budget of the Federal Secretary of Tourism, as well as additional support from municipal authorities. 

Los Ángeles Verdes de Cozumel reciben vehículo nuevo

En fechas recientes los Ángeles Verdes recibieron un nuevo vehículo para apoyar rescates en la carretera. Según Fernando Valencia Yeh, responsable de los Ángeles Verdes, el vehículo viejo ya ha visto muchas batallas, se ha usado constantemente y ya estaba en malas condiciones.

Se estima que los Ángeles Verdes realizan un promedio de 10 rescates al día, siendo el más común de estos el de accidentes de motocicletas y de motos.

Sus servicios, que son gratuitos tanto para los turistas como para los habitantes locales, brindan rescate a personas que tienen problemas con sus vehículos. Los miembros de los Ángeles Verdes cuentan con “conocimientos básicos” y pueden suministrar gasolina o aire. Sus servicios son cubiertos por la Secretaría de Turismo Federal y apoyo recibido de las autoridades municipales.  

Warm Weather Brings out Bees: Please be Cautious

Cozumel Emergency Services are reporting that hot, dry weather such as the island has been experiencing can cause bees to swarm.    

There is a general theory as to why bees swarm.  According to BuzzAboutBees.net “As the weather warms up, the colony expands. More workers are produced. The colony maintains its efficiency through being extremely well organised…. There comes a point when the crowd is so great, that not all of the workers have access to the queen… There is no space in the colony for more than one queen. Before the new queen emerges, the old queen takes off with part of the colony to establish a new nest…..Once the swarm has left its old nest or hive, this is when we might see a whirling mass of swarming bees in the air, or a bee swarm settled on the branch of a tree.”

If you happen upon a bee swarm please call the authorities and do not attempt to remove the bees yourself.   Swarming bees are seldom dangerous, however they can become disoriented and frightened, and make moves to defend themselves and their queen.

Last April a swarm of bees hospitalized a family of 4, a firefighter, and the family pets when they swarmed into their home.

Con el clima cálido salen las abejas; por favor sean cautelosos

Los servicios de emergencia de Cozumel reportan que el clima cálido y seco tal como el que ha estado presentando en Cozumel hace proliferen los enjambres.

Hay una teoría general del por qué las abejas se unen en enjambres. De acuerdo a BuzzAboutBees.net “Conforme el clima aumenta, la colonia se expande. Se produce una mayor cantidad de obreras. La colonia mantiene su eficiencia organizándose extremadamente bien. . .Llega un punto que el grupo es tan grande que no todas las obreras tienen acceso a la reina. . . Ya no hay espacio suficiente para más de una reina. Antes de que la nueva reina aparezca, la abeja reina vieja debe salir de la colonia para establecer un nido nuevo. . .Una vez que el enjambre ha dejado el antiguo nido o colmena,  es cuando posiblemente veamos una masa arremolinada de abejas en el aire o una sola abeja sobre la rama de un árbol”.

Si se topa con un enjambre, por favor comuníquese con las autoridades y no trate de retirar las abejas. Las abejas en enjambre raramente son peligrosas; sin embargo, es posible que se desorienten y  asusten, y adopten medidas para defenderse y defender a su reina.

El pasado Abril un enjambre mandó a una familia de 4 integrantes y sus mascotas al hospital cuando el enjambre entro a su casa.

Cozumel Turtle Nesting Season 2016: 32 Loggerhead Nests

Representatives from the municipal Department of Ecology are reporting that 23 nests have been tagged so far, although turtle season only officially started on May 15th.  So far all of the nests identified have been Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) or colloquially known as Caguamas.  In a recent interview to celebrate world turtle day, Biologist Rafael Chacon, who heads up the Ecology department, said that he hoped the upcoming rains would help increase not only the number of nests but also encourage the Green turtle (chelonian mydas).

Turtles in Cozumel are protected under both civil and penal codes, with the first decree of protection appearing in publication in “Diario Oficial de la Federación,” back in 1927.  During the months of May through September these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on Cozumel’s eastern beaches.  Sea turtles generally lay between 150-200 eggs each time and can nest up to 6 times in a breeding season.  The eggs take around 60 days to incubate before the baby turtles head toward the sea. Temporada 2016 de anidación de la tortuga en Cozumel: 32 nidos de tortuga caguama

Representantes de la Dirección de Ecología municipal reportan que a la fecha han sido marcados 23 nidos, no obstante que la temporada de tortuga apenas inicio oficialmente en Mayo 15. Hasta ahora todos los nidos identificados han sido de tortuga caguama (Caretta caretta). En una entrevista reciente para celebrar el día mundial de la tortuga el Biólogo Rafael Chacón, que dirige la Dirección de Ecología, indicó que las próximas lluvias puedan aumentar no solo el número de nidos sino que también puedan promover la llegada de la tortuga verde (Chelonian mydas).
 
Las tortugas de Cozumel se encuentran protegidas tanto por el Código Civil como por el Penal, con protección en primer grado de acuerdo a la publicación en el Diario Oficial de la Federación de 1927. De Mayo a Septiembre estas tortugas llegan a las costas para colocar sus huevos en las playas de las costas orientales de la Isla. Las tortugas marinas generalmente colocan entre 150-200 huevos cada vez y pueden llegar a anidar hasta 6 veces en una temporada.
