Construction Begins on The Westin Cozumel

Construction has already begun in Cozumel’s northern hotel zone on the new “Westin Cozumel.”  The first hotel to be constructed in the last 7 years, the Westin Cozumel, is located on the site of the former "Isla Cabañas Cozumel" hotel and features 156 rooms.  Part of the Starwood international hotel chain, the new venture will be their 8th hotel in Mexico.

Ha iniciado la construcción del nuevo hotel Westin Cozumel en la zona hotelera norte de Cozumel. Siendo el primer hotel que se construye en los últimos 7 años, Westin Cozumel, se ubica en el sitio donde antes se ubicaba el hotel “Isla Cabañas Cozumel”, con 156 habitaciones. Este será el 8º hotel en México perteneciente a la cadena hotelera Starwood International.

Cozumel Authorities and UNESCO To Sign Agreement Protecting Cultural Heritage

Plans are in the works for Cozumel Municipal Officials and  the Office of the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural (UNESCO ) in Mexico to sign a join cooperation agreement this Friday to recognize and protect the island’s  underwater cultural heritage and traditions.  According to published reports, the agreement will focus on the  study of archaeo- astronomy of Cozumel and the importance of the island’s archaeological sites in the  Maya civilization. 

Additionally, the joint agreement will also serve to allow Cozumel officials and UNESCO to work together on the conservation of the ecosystems found here, including the coral reefs and the mangroves.

Autoridades de Cozumel y la UNESCO firman acuerdo para proteger el patrimonio cultural

Las autoridades municipales de Cozumel y la oficina de la Organización para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura de las Naciones Unidas (UNESCO) en México firmarán este próximo día viernes un acuerdo conjunto para que se reconozcan y protejan tanto el patrimonio cultural submarino como las tradiciones de la Isla. Según informes publicados el acuerdo se centrará en el estudio de la arqueo-astronomía de Cozumel y la importancia de los sitios arqueológicos de la civilización maya de la Isla.

Adicionalmente, el acuerdo conjunto también servirá para que los funcionarios de Cozumel y la UNESCO trabajen juntos en la conservación de los ecosistemas locales, incluyendo los arrecifes de coral y los manglares.

You Can’t Keep a Good Boat Down: The Rescue & Renovation of the Albatros by Rita Absher, Albatros Charters

As many of you have already heard, our flagship boat, the Albatros, a 42 foot Chris Craft fishing boat, experienced a problem and sank in 120 feet of water just off Punta Sur last week.  While this may sound like a tragedy, it’s really been quite an experience.

First of all, both fisherman and crew aboard that the time of the incident were rescued safe and sound, and our recovery team pulled it off without a hitch as well.  Secondly, the outpouring of community support we received has been outstanding.  Raising the Albatros from such a depth was a challenge, and the process was made so much easier by so many people who stepped up, helped out, and accomplished the nearly impossible.  So many people offered support, provided services and manual labor, that I could probably not remember to thank all involved.

One of the Albatros’ engines has already been restarted, and since we originally had plans to replace the other engine this month, there’s a brand-new replacement ready.  In fact, both engines should be on the boat in no time at all, the fiberglass work on the transom and inside the cabin should be finished in 3 – 4 week’s time.  The Albatros will be equipped with all new gadgets – GPS, Fishfinder, XM Stereo, and communications system – new electronics and lights and various other amenities.  In fact, we’re expecting a better-than-ever Albatros to be out fishing in about a month.

We want to take this opportunity to thank so many of you that stepped up to the plate in a much needed time and to inform our tourists that come to this little piece of paradise, that they have chosen wisely to hold this place close to their hearts.  Truly, what better proof of community support than something like this or the horrific hurricane Wilma to show that when the going gets tough, the people and community of this little island cannot be kept down.

Uno no debe mantener hundida a una buena embarcación: el rescate y restauración de la Albatros por Rita Absher, Albatros Charters

Como muchos saben, la semana pasada nuestra embarcación insignia de casi 13 mts. de eslora, Albatros, una Chris Craft de pesca se vio implicada en un problema y se hundió a 36 mts. de profundidad frente a Punta Sur. Si bien esto puede sonar como tragedia, verdaderamente ha sido toda una experiencia.

Antes que nada tanto el pescador como la tripulación quienes estaban abordo al momento del incidente, fueron rescatados, puestos a salvo, y nuestro equipo de recuperación también logró salir sin problemas. Luego, el gran apoyo que hemos recibido por parte de la comunidad ha sido excelente. Sacar la Albatros desde tal profundidad, fue todo un reto y el proceso fue sencillo gracias al apoyo de tantas personas que ayudaron para lograr lo que era casi imposible. Fue tal la cantidad de gente que  brindó su apoyo, servicios y mano de obra que es muy posible que no recuerde a todos para darles las gracias.

Ya se ha echado a andar uno de los motores de la Albatros, y ya que teníamos planes de sustituir el otro motor este mes, éste ya está listo.  De hecho, ambos motores deben estar colocados dentro de muy poco tiempo; el trabajo de fibra de vidrio del espejo de popa y del interior de la cabina deben concluir en 3 ó 4 semanas. Albatros estará equipada con aparatos nuevos: GPS, sonar, XM estéreo y sistema de comunicaciones, nuevo equipo electrónico y luces así como otros servicios. De hecho, esperamos tener una mejor Albatros de lo esperado, ya pescando en un mes aproximadamente.

Queremos aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecer a todos aquellos que ayudaron voluntariamente en un momento de tanta necesidad e informar a nuestros visitantes quienes llegan a este pequeño pedazo de paraíso que han elegido sabiamente al mantener este lugar cerca de sus corazones. Con toda sinceridad, qué mejor prueba del apoyo de la comunidad como lo ha sido esta situación o con el horrendo huracán Wilma, pues ello es una demostración de que cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles el pueblo y la comunidad de esta pequeña Isla no se quedan con los brazos cruzados.

Humane Society Pets of the Week  by Janice Ramirez Castro

Sirius, male dog 1.5 years old, weight 19 kg. This big handsome dog showed up at a person's home trying to move in, but the existing dogs in the home were not having that! He absolutely gorgeous and has longish fluffy hair on his back. A lot of labrador is our guess. He is a super smart boy! One of our kennel workers filmed him opening a kennel gate! He is well behaved and totally game for belly rubs and loves to give hugs. Admission date May 16, 2014

Frank Sinatra , male cat 2 months old. He was found hiding under some rocks crying outside a man's house and he brought him to the HS. Adorable affectionate and plays with all the other kittens and cuddles with them non stop. Admission date April 29, 2014

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria por Janice Ramirez Castro

Sirius, perro de 1.5 años de edad y pesa 19 k. ¡Este perro grande y hermoso se presentó en la casa de una persona tratando de mudarse, pero los perros de la casa no se lo permitieron! Es absolutamente hermoso, tiene pelo suave y esponjoso, algo largo en la espalda. Suponemos que tiene mucho de Labrador. ¡Es un chico súper inteligente! ¡Uno de nuestros trabajadores de la perrera lo filmó abriendo una puerta de una jaula! Es bien portado y está totalmente listo para que le acaricien la panza y lo abracen. Fecha de admisión: Mayo 16, 2014.

Frank Sinatra, gato de dos meses. Fue encontrado llorando y ocultándose bajo algunas piedras afuera de la casa de un señor que trajo a Frank Sinatra a la Sociedad Humanitaria. Es adorable y cariñoso, juega con todos los otros gatitos y se abraza de ellos sin parar. Fecha de admisión: Abril 29, 2014.

Originally, the physical practice of yoga was called hatha yoga, as opposed to raja yoga, the actual yoga philosophy. Yoga practice in the present day features a myriad of different styles, the number of which continues to increase as teachers all over the world add new flavors into their expression of the practice and new fusion opportunities arise. Indeed, it is very easy to get confused, especially if you are new to yoga and not sure where to start. The general rule of thumb is to read the description of the practice instead of relying on its “official” definition – classes with the same name could be quite different depending on who teaches them. It’s always best to talk to the teacher so that they can answer specific questions and concerns you may have. And don’t be afraid to try a new “scary” style – it may sound intimidating, but you may end up falling in love with it, you never know.

Originalmente la practica física de yoga se llamaba hatha yoga, contrario al raja yoga que es la filosofía real del yoga. En la actualidad la práctica de yoga cuenta con una gran variedad de estilos diferentes, cuyo número sigue aumentando a medida que los maestros de todo el mundo suman nuevos sabores de su expresión a la práctica y se presentan nuevas oportunidades de fusión. En realidad es fácil confundirse sobre todo si se es nuevo en la práctica de yoga y no sabe por dónde empezar. La regla general es leer la descripción de la práctica en lugar de confiar en su definición "oficial"; las clases con el mismo nombre pueden ser muy diferentes dependiendo de quién las imparte. Siempre es mejor hablar con el maestro para que conteste preguntas específicas y las inquietudes que pudiera usted tener. Y, no tema probar un nuevo estilo "atemorizante", a pesar de que puede sonar intimidante, es posible que termine enamorándose de esto, nunca se sabe.

Cozumel Turtle Season Started - Cozumel is fortunate to be a breeding area to two species of turtles, the loggerhead (careta careta) and the green turtle (chelonian mydas).  During the months of May through September these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on Cozumel’s eastern beaches.  Sea turtles generally lay between 150-200 eggs each time and can nest up to 6 times in a breeding season.  The eggs take around 60 days to incubate before the baby turtles head toward the sea.  For more information on the Turtle Program, please visit the Municipal Department of Ecology, located in the Centoe Park on Av. 65

Comenzó la temporada de tortuga en Cozumel -  Cozumel tiene la fortuna de ser una zona de cría de dos especies de tortugas: la tortuga caguama (Careta Careta) y la tortuga verde (Chelonia quelonio). De Mayo a Septiembre estas tortugas vienen a tierra para depositar sus huevos en las playas orientales de Cozumel. Las tortugas de mar generalmente depositan de 150 a 200 huevos en cada ocasión, y pueden anidar hasta 6 veces durante una temporada de cría. La incubación de los huevos tarda alrededor de 60 días antes de que las crías se dirijan al mar.
