22 Buoys Installed Inside the Cozumel Marine Park

Twenty-two buoys have recently been installed inside the National Marine Park “Arrecifes de Cozumel.” The new buoys were installed in an effort to help maintain the natural resources within the park, by avoiding damage from boat anchors, fishing inside the park and other dangers. Locations of the new buoys include Dzul-ha, Playa Corona, Playa Uvas and several in el Cielo.  Some of the buoys were placed to serve as boat moorings, some near shallow reefs used for snorkeling and some to advise that fishing of all kinds is prohibited in the area. 

Marine Park staff installed the buoys last weeked.  You can find a complete list of their locations, and which purpose they serve on the official PNAC facebook page.

Se instalaron 22 Boyas en el interior del Parque Marino de Cozumel

En fechas recientes se instalaron veintidós boyas dentro del Parque Marino Nacional “Arrecifes de Cozumel”. Las boyas fueron colocadas en un esfuerzo por ayudar a mantener los recursos naturales dentro del parque, evitando daños causados por anclas de embarcaciones, pesca dentro del parque y otros peligros. La ubicación de las boyas nuevas abarca Dzul-Ha, Playa Corona, Playa Uvas y varias en El Cielo. Algunas de las boyas fueron colocadas para servir como amarres para embarcaciones, algunas cerca de arrecifes poco profundos donde se practica el esnórquel y otras para informar que la pesca de cualquier tipo está prohibida en dicha área.

El personal del Parque Marino instaló las boyas la semana pasada. En la página oficial PNAC de Facebook, usted puede encontrar una lista completa de las ubicaciones y los fines de su uso.

Cozumel's Cinema "Cecilio Borge" Closes After Over 30 Years

Cozumel’s iconic cinema, Cecilio Borge, has finally closed it’s doors after more than 30 years in operation.  In a touching and nostalgic letter, which appeared in part, in the weekly publication,  “El Seminario,”  the theatre’s owners recapped 33 years of movies and memories.  From films that sparked children’s dreams, to stage performances, dance recitals and even a visit from members of the Russian Ballet Company, the cinema served the Cozumel community. 

The building, which is located on. Benito Juarez and  Av. 30 is reportedly under consideration for a new shopping center.

El cine "Cecilio Borge" de Cozumel cierra después de más de 30 años

Después de haber estado operando durante más de 30 años, el emblemático cine “Cecilio Borge” ha cerrado sus puertas. A través de una conmovedora y nostálgica carta que apareció, parcialmente, en la publicación semanal “El Seminario” los propietarios del cine recapitularon 33 años de películas y recuerdos. Desde aquellas películas que despertaron los sueños de los niños hasta representaciones escénicas, recitales de danza e incluso una visita de los miembros de la Compañía del Ballet Ruso, el cine sirvió a la comunidad de Cozumel

Se está considerando que la construcción que se ubica en Benito Juárez y Ave. 30, se convierta en un nuevo centro comercial.

U.S. Taxes While Living Abroad

It is a common misconception, that if you are a U.S. citizen or resident, and permanently reside in another county, you don’t have to file or pay any U.S. taxes.  In fact, U.S. citizens living abroad and making more than $9,350, have the same, and sometimes enhanced, tax and reporting obligations. There are a few tax breaks for U.S. citizens abroad, but there are also numerous foreign reporting requirements with which U.S. citizens must comply.

The IRS is also getting serious about U.S. citizens reporting signature authority over or financial interest in, foreign financial accounts, as well as relationships with many types of foreign entities, including foreign corporations and partnerships. Failure to comply with these reporting obligations can result in significant penalties.

Finally, on March 18, 2010, (FACTCA) Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act was made into law. FACTA creates an overlapping reporting requirement separate from the one mentioned above.  It applies only to foreign financial assets, such as foreign bank accounts, foreign securities, and ownership interest in foreign entities. The penalties for failure to comply with these requirements START at $10,000 per failure and upwards.

Obviously, just because you live and work outside of the U.S., in no way absolves you of your U.S. tax and reporting obligations.  The complexities of living abroad can be difficult to sort through.  Make sure you have a competent tax professional help you sort out the details and make sure you are in compliance.

Impuestos de los E.U.A. mientras se vive en el extranjero

Un error muy común es creer que si se es un ciudadano o residente de los EUA y vive en forma permanente en otro país, no es necesario declarar o pagar impuestos en los Estados Unidos. De hecho, los estadounidenses que viven en el extranjero y que perciben cantidades mayores a $9350, tienen las mismas, y a mayores, obligaciones tributarias fiscales y declarativas. Existen pocas exenciones fiscales para los estadounidenses residentes en el extranjero, y también hay diversos requisitos de declaraciones extranjeras que los estadounidenses deben cumplir.

El IRS (Servicio de Recaudación Interna o el equivalente a la SCHP) también está tomando muy en serio los reportes de los estadounidenses quienes reportan facultad de firma dentro o patrimonio dentro de cuentas financieras en el exterior, así como la relación con las entidades extranjeras de diversas clases, incluyendo empresas y sociedades extranjeras. El incumplimiento a la obligación de presentar estas declaraciones puede dar lugar a sanciones considerables.

Finalmente, el 18 de marzo del 2010 la Ley de Declaración Fiscal por Cuentas Extranjeras (FACTCA, por sus siglas en inglés) fue aplicada. FACTA crea el requisito de información duplicada, independiente de la mencionada con anterioridad. Sólo aplica a activos financieros extranjeros, tales como cuentas bancarias extranjeras, valores extranjeros y participación en entidades extranjeras. Las sanciones por incumplimiento de estos requisitos INICIAN a partir de $ 10.000 por incumplimiento, o por cantidades mayores.

Obviamente, sólo por el hecho de que usted vive y trabaja fuera de los E.U.A no le exime de sus obligaciones y declaraciones fiscales  de los E.U.A. Es posible que sea algo difícil de sortear las complicaciones que implica vivir en el extranjero. Asegúrese obtener la ayuda de un profesional competente en materia fiscal para atender los detalles y asegurar que usted está cumpliendo debidamente.

Yoga Class at Friday's Malecon Market to Support Refugio "La Esperanza"

During this Friday’s Malecon Market, Tammy Cervantes and teachers from her yoga studio will be offering a very special yoga class, starting at 5 pm.  There is no charge for the class but donationsare being gratefully accepted  for the halfway house for recovering alcoholics and addicts, “Refugio La Esperanza.” Addiction in our community,  and in the world in general,  is a real and huge problem. It is of great importance for these people to have a healthy, clean place to live and enough food while beginning this radical and difficult change to a new life.

Malecon Market occurs on the last Friday evening of every month, and is a gathering of local artists, producers and restaurants, on the Malecon in front of the giant flag.  The event runs from 5 – 11 pm.

Clase de Yoga el viernes en el Mercado del Malecón para apoyar al Refugio "La Esperanza"

Este viernes mientras se lleva a cabo el Mercado del Malecón, Tammy Cervantes y los profesores de su estudio de yoga estarán ofreciendo una clase muy especial de yoga a partir de las 5 p.m. No hay ningún cargo por la clase, pero se agradecen y se aceptan donativos para el centro de rehabilitación para la recuperación de alcohólicos y adictos: "Refugio La Esperanza." La adicción en nuestra comunidad, y en el mundo en general, es un problema real y enorme. Es de gran importancia que estas personas tengan un lugar sano y limpio donde vivir, y comida suficiente en lo que empieza este cambio radical y difícil hacia una nueva vida.

El Malecon Market se realiza el último día viernes de cada mes por la noche y reúne a artistas locales, fabricantes y restaurantes en el malecón frente a la bandera gigante. El evento es de 5 a 11 p.m.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

LOST DOGS: this brindle female pit mix was found Saturday 25th, morning on Calle 30. The shelter is currently full. We do not have space for this dog and we really need to find the owners for them to re-claim her. Of course she will be returned spayed! please all that live locally share. There's a local facebook page (not related to us, but useful) called: Mascotas Perdidas y Encontradas en Cozumel (Lost and found pets in Cozumel). There you'll see that lost pets are a problem in our island, please have your pets use a collar with an identification tag at all times and don't let them out without supervision. If you rescue an animal from the street please give us a hand and be part of the solution by helping us with the quarintine period, take your rescue to the shelter for the check-up with our vet and then please consider being a Foster Home. Help us promoting adoptions, when you adopt, you save two lives, one by taking a pet into your home and the other by letting a space open for an animal from the street.

Marshmellow is a 5 week old female kitten in foster care with cat volunteer Joni. A lovely adult street cat near her house gave birth to Marshmellow and her sibling who is already adopted. She is a gorgeous health little kitty ready for her forever home now, she's getting big and Kitten Season is hitting late and hard. They are all survivors, when her momma was spayed, she had a lot of internal scars from an old wound.

Please help us spread the word: Preventive Medicine is the best medicine, check your pet's carnet to see all deworming, heart worm prevention, flea/tick prevention and vaccines are in order. Distemper hits hard, and it is very important to prevent. There have been a lot of cases.

Many organizations & animal loving people through all the State have worked really hard to have animal abuse added to the penal code. That's why you might've seen this image reading: "Yo apoyo la iniciativa de Maltrato Animal al Código Penal" (I support the initiative od animal abuse to the penal code) This will make Q. Roo the sixth state in Mexico to penalize animal abuse, this is very important, as the problem goes beyond animal welfare, there's a thin line dividing violence against animals an violence against humans, and this are defensless creatures without a voice of their own. Please consider signing this petition.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

PERROS EXTRAVIADOS: esta perrita atigrada cruza de pit fue encontrada el sábado 25, en la mañana, en la calle 30. El refugio esta lleno actualmente. No tenemos espacio para esta perrita y tenemos que encontrar a los dueños para regresarla, esterilizada, por supuesto. Por favor, aquellos que vivan localmente, compartan esta información. Hay una página de facebook (no relacionada con nosotros, pero muy útil) llamada: Mascotas Perdidas y Encontradas en Cozumel. Ahí verán el problema de las mascotas extraviadas en nuestra isla, por favor, hagan que su mascota use collar con placa de identificación todo el tiempo y no la dejen salir sin supervisión. Si rescatan a un animal de la calle por favor denos una mano y sean parte de la solución ayudándonos con el tiepo de la cuarentena, lleven a su rescate al chequeo veterinario y consideren ser Hogar Temporal. Ayúdenos a promover las adopciones, cuando adoptas, salvas dos vidas, una, la que llevas a tu hogar y  la otra al dejar un espacio libre en el refugio para un animal en situación de calle.

Marshmellow (Bombón) es una gatita de 5 semanas de edad en hogar temporal con nuestra voluntaria de gatitos Joni. Una adorable gatita de la calle los tuvo a ella y su hermano que ya esta adoptado. Es saludable y está listo para su hogar por siempre ahora, está creciendo y la Temporada de Gatitos llegó tarde pero fuerte. Son sobrevivientes, cuando la mamá fue esterilizada, tenía muchas cicatrices internas de alguna antigua herida.

Estos y muchos animalitos mas te esperan en el refugio, recuerda visitarnos para conocerlos, uno nunca sabe, podrías encontrar a un compañero muy especial. Para obtener más información póngase en contacto con pets@humanecozumel.org.

El moquillo (distemper) es agresivo y es muy importante de prevenir. Hemos visto muchos casos.

How I Came To Call Cozumel Home, A Series by Island Residents

I was living in Key West, Florida when I first came to Cozumel in the spring of 1988. I was here scuba diving and enjoying the east side beaches, especially The Naked Turtle, where Playa Bonita is today. I fell in love with the island, the waters, and the people of Cozumel. My scuba instructor, who was also a part time real estate broker, convinced me that I should take a look at the houses he had listed for sale. There were three different houses, but one of them really caught my eye…small house, big yard with lots of fruit trees, centrally located…a perfect “fixer-upper”. Long story short, I purchased the house on that first ever visit to the island. Six months later, Hurricane Gilbert slammed the island as the strongest ever hurricane in the Atlantic basin (only to be out-done by Wilma in 2005).

I returned to Cozumel three months after the storm to find that my house was fine, but all of those great fruit trees were gone. After three hard weeks of cleanup, I left the island again but this time with the house rented. For years, all the money from the rental went back into the house and property making it nicer and nicer every time I visited, which was usually twice a year. In March of 1998, ten years after buying the house, everything changed. I was living in Seattle at the time, and was deeply involved in the glassblowing scene there. I had put together a very successful business doing the “coldwork” or “finishing work” for many of Seattle’s leading glass artists.

On my first night of my Cozumel vacation that year I walked into Raga (a downtown night club around the corner from Joe’s), asked an attractive local girl to dance, and history was in the making. Not that I am that good a dancer (trust me on this one), and my Spanish was extremely basic, but somehow I convinced this girl, Liliana, to hang out with me a bit on my vacation. We had a great time, but neither of us wanted anything to do with a long distance relationship, so at the end of my two week vacation, we said goodbye. Well, that didn’t last long. I got back up to Seattle and couldn’t stop thinking about Liliana and sunny Cozumel as I ground away on other people’s glass art in the constant drizzle of the northwest. I visited the island a few times over the next 6 months and then decided to move here.

I officially became a Cozumel resident in December of 1998, and will hopefully live the rest of my life here. One of the many side benefits of this change is that it forced me to concentrate on my own artwork instead of working for other artists, and this is how I now make my living. Liliana and I have now shared 15 years of happiness together, we have added on to the house making it comfortable for to both of us live and work from home.  Instead of children, we are the proud parents of three cats. Yes, Cozumel has changed a lot since 1988, but I still love it here and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Cómo se convirtió Cozumel en mi hogar. Una serie escrita por habitantes de la Isla

En la época que visité Cozumel por primera ocasión durante la primavera del año 1988, solía vivir en Key West, Florida. Disfruté del buceo y de las playas al oriente, en especial la Tortuga Desnuda donde actualmente se encuentra Playa Bonita. Me enamoré de la Isla y de su gente. Mi instructor de buceo quien laboraba medio tiempo como agente de bienes raíces, me convenció de ver algunas casas que él tenía disponibles para la venta. Había tres casas distintas, pero una en particular fue la que más me llamó la atención: una casa pequeña, un amplio jardín con muchos árboles de frutas, ubicada en el centro…perfecta para repararse. En resumen, adquirí la casa en mi primera visita a la Isla. Seis meses después, el huracán Gilberto azotó la Isla como el huracán más fuerte ocurrido en el atlántico (sólo para ser desplazado por el huracán Wilma en el año 2005).

Regresé a Cozumel tres meses después de la tormenta para encontrar que la casa estaba bien, sin embargo se habían perdido los magníficos árboles frutales. Tras tres semanas de ardua limpieza, salí de la Isla de nuevo, pero en esta ocasión renté la casa. Durante el años, el dinero percibido por las rentas se invirtió en el inmueble y el terreno embelleciéndolos más y más cada ocasión que yo visitaba la Isla, lo que sucedía un par de veces al año. En el mes de Marzo del año 1998, diez años después de adquirir la casa, todo cambio. Entonces me encontraba viviendo en Seattle y ahí me encontraba participando activamente en las actividades de vidrio soplado. Había logrado crear un negocio exitoso haciendo el “trabajo en frío” o el “acabado” de muchos de los principales artistas de vidrio soplado en Seattle.

Mi primera noche de las vacaciones de ese año en Cozumel, entré a Raga (un club nocturno ubicado en el centro de la ciudad, a la vuelta de Joe’s), a una atractiva chica local le pedí que bailara conmigo, y en ese momento se creaba la historia. No soy muy buen bailarín (se los aseguro), y mi español es extremadamente básico, pero de alguna forma convencía a esta chica, Liliana, que nos frecuentáramos un poco durante mis vacaciones. La pasamos my bien, y ninguno de los dos quería tener una relación a larga distancia; por ello, al final de mis vacaciones de dos semanas, nos despedimos. Pues bien, eso no duro mucho. Regresé a Seattle, pero no podía dejar de pensar en Liliana y el soleado Cozumel en tanto me encontraba tan ocupado con el arte en vidrio de otros en la constante llovizna del noroeste. Durante los siguientes 6 meses visite la Isla varias veces y decidí mudarme para acá.

Me convertí oficialmente en residente de Cozumel en el mes de diciembre del año 1998, y espero vivir aquí el resto de mi vida. Uno de los muchos beneficios de este cambio es que me forzó a concentrarme en mis propias obras artísticas en lugar de trabajar para otros, y así es cómo me gano la vida. Liliana y yo hemos compartido 15 años de felicidad ; hemos ampliado la casa haciéndola más cómoda para que ambos vivamos y trabajemos en casa. En lugar de hijos, somos los orgullosos padres de tres gatos. Sí, Cozumel ha cambiado mucho desde el año 1988, pero aún me encanta estar aquí y no me imagino estar en ningún otro lugar.

Irma’s Mayan Word of the Week - this week I will combine a mayan word with a very common expression used all over. The word is, XIC, which means armpit, and you should pronounce it like shic. The expression is FO which is not a mayan word, but we all use it whenever we dont like something, so whenever you see a person with a smelly armpit, tell them, Fo, te apesta tu Xic!, Yikes, your armpit stinks!
