Mexican Air Force Honors World War II Pilots in Cozumel

When the United States of America went to war with Japan and Germany in World War II, the Mexican Air Force was there as well. A small group of Mexican pilots, Squadron 201, fought bravely alongside the USA in the Pacific theatre during World War II.  Squadron 201 flew fifty-nine combat missions from Luzon against the Japanese. Throughout their tour, there were five 201 pilot casualties.  In fact, the 300 men that composed the 201 squadron are the only veterans of foreign wars in the history of Mexico.     Earlier in the week, the Mexican Air Force commemorated the brave men of the 201st, by holding special ceremony at the Cozumel military base (BAM 4), The Commander of the Mexican Air Force was on Cozumel to commemorate the event. Cuando los Estados Unidos entraron en  guerra con Japón y Alemania en la II guerra mundial la Fuerza Aérea Mexicana entro también. Un pequeño grupo de pilotos mexicanos, el Escuadrón 201, luchando valientemente junto con los Estados Unidos en el Pacífico durante la guerra .El Escuadrón 201 voló a cincuenta y nueve misiones de combate desde Luzón contra los japoneses. A lo largo de su gira, hubo 201 piloto bajas.  De hecho, los 300 hombres que contemplaron  el Escuadrón 201 son los únicos veteranos de guerras extranjeras en la historia de México. New Sanitation Service Started May 4th

Starting May 4th Cozumel has a new sanitation system, including trash collection, and waste management.    City officials are confident that the new concession, PASA, will be able to ecologically solve the landfill and trash issues that our island has been experiencing.  Cozumel’s new garbage collection is as follows:   in the southern area of San Miguel trash will be collected on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 7 am – 3 pm.  The northern side of san Miguel has trash collection on Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays at the same hour.  The Central zone and the hotel zones will continue to have daily evening collections.  For more detailed information on the collection schedule check out the video on the Cozumel municipal homepage. http://www.cozumel.gob.mx/

Although it’s not been completely confirmed, recycling apparently will still be accepted at the transfer station location on Av. 140 and Calle 1. 

El Inicio del 4 de mayo Cozumel tiene un nuevo sistema de saneamiento, incluyendo la recolecta de basura y gestión de los residuos.   Los funcionarios de la ciudad están seguros de que la nueva concesión, PASA, será capaz de resolver ecológicamente los problemas de los vertederos y de la basura que ha experimentado nuestra isla. La  Nueva colección de basura de Cozumel es: en la zona sur de San Miguel la  basura será recogida  los lunes, los  miércoles y el viernes de 7 am-3 pm.  El lado norte de san Miguel tiene la colección de basura en los martes, el jueves y los sábados a la misma hora.  La zona central y de las zonas de hotel seguirá teniendo las colecciones diarias en la tarde.  Para mayor información detallada sobre el plan de recolección ver el vídeo en la página web municipal de Cozumel. http://www.cozumel.gob.mx/

Aunque no a sido confirmado, el  reciclaje aparentemente todavía se aceptarán en la ubicación de la estación de transferencia de 140 de la Avenida y la Calle 1.

Turtle Breeding Season Officially Begins May 15th

Protomar (The Municipal Committee of Turtle Protection)   has decreed that the official start of turtle breeding season begins on May 15th.  The eastern side of Cozumel is a nesting area for two types of sea turtles; the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). A strategy to protect Cozumel’s eastern beaches is a team effort between Cozumel government, and voluntary brigades of citizens, students and marine biologists have already been defined.  In prior years, nighttime access to the eastern beaches was restricted to authorized personnel.  Volunteers collect turtle eggs and move them to safer nesting areas.  After 60 days the turtle hatchlings are returned to the original nesting area where they are released into the sea. 

Protomar (el Comité Municipal de Proteccion de la tortuga) ha decretado que el inicio oficial de la temporada de cría de tortuga comienza el 15 de mayo . El lado oriental de Cozumel es una zona de anidación para dos tipos de tortugas marinas; la tortuga  caguama (Caretta caretta) y la tortuga verde (Chelonia mydas). Una estrategia para proteger las playas del oriente de Cozumel es un esfuerzo de equipo entre el Gobierno de Cozumel y los cuerpos de voluntarios, de estudiantes y los biólogos marinos ya se han definido.  En años anteriores, durante la noche el acceso a las playas orientales fue restringido solo a personal autorizado.  Los voluntarios recogen huevos de tortuga y los mueven a zonas más seguras de anidación.  Después de 60 días las crías de tortuga se devuelven a la zona de anidación original donde se lanzaran al mar.

Humane Society Story of the Week: the continuation of the Dump - by Monica Velasco

As the imminent departure date of Gabacho and Coco approached, we scheduled to pick up their dogs and cats on Tuesday the 26th. We went that day, with the IFAW truck full of kennels and two camera people to document the rescue, but when we got there Gabacho and Coco were not there. They had gone to town, trying to find some answers to their many questions and uncertainties. We didn’t want to add stress to the situation by trying to catch the dogs ourselves, and we certainly didn’t want the guys to go back and not find their dogs.

So we re-scheduled for thursday the 28th and Gabacho met us at 7:30 a.m. to go with us. Our arrival at the dump was both sad and sweet. Most of the dogs were right there to receive Gabacho, near the old broken truck that had given them shade for so long and was being dismantled at that moment. Such happy dogs! Tails wagging rapidly, yelping, running around him, standing on hind legs, ears back, puppy gestures. What a relief to have their protector back! Things were changing fast around them and they were dissoriented, scared. Work at the place was advancing rapidly, as the formal inauguration of the private company taking over would be in only five more days.

Their old cardboard casita was gone, bulldozed and piled up to one side. Whatever belongings they didn´t take out before, were waiting for them at the Police department.  Gabacho quietly petted his dogs, comforting them and himself. He was facing the reality that had been crawling up for months and now was there before him. We walked with him and he pointed to where the casita had been; the table, the hammock, the only block wall. Then we walked to where the dead dogs were buried.

He looked around and saw Burra and Chel and a few others were not there, so he went to round them up. He came back with several dogs, happy to see him back. Now we had all his 10 remaining dogs. Cirquera was already at the place where Gabacho and Coco were given temporary refuge, somewhere in town. -We are ready when you are- I said to Gabacho, while he stood there trying to digest his suddenly gone past and his uncertain near future. He nodded. The first one to be put in a kennel was Machín, a large male, son of Zacatecas the oldest dog. We all expected some resistance to being put in kennels, but there was none. One by one, Gabacho picked them up and they all acted like submissive puppies. Heads and legs hanging lose, they went in the kennels. Once in, they did get nervous if they couldn not see Gabacho. With ten dogs aboard, we were ready to go, and Gabacho chose to ride with them in the back.

At the shelter, we let all dogs out to cool off and relax a bit in the palapa area while we conversed with Gabacho. The dogs had water, but they stayed within 3 feet from their guy. I presented to him the possibility of working at the shelter temporarily, as a last resort, until he finds his feet. He looked at me and smiled, and said: -I would be with them!-. Having Gabacho with us helping to take care of his dogs would be great. But the fact is that our staff is complete and adding a salary is not a decision we can take lightly. If this turns out to be an option, we will need help and are trying to find it. 

A week later, we have not heard from Gabacho but we are not surprised. The dogs are safe and he must have many things to solve, and so does Coco-Loco. As far as the dogs, they get frequent socializing time together, and are slowly being introduced into the world of collars and leashes, and of temporary confinement. They have now been tested  for heart-worm and all but two tested possitive, so treatments will be necessary. Other than that, they are generally healthy. We have had such a great response to this story that we are very hopeful we can find help for all the dogs and cats. This time, our plea includes two men.

Al acercarse la fecha en la que Gabacho y Coco-Loco debían desocupar, planeamos ir a buscar a sus perros el día Martes 26. Fuímos, con la camioneta de IFAW llena de transportadoras y dos camarógrafos para documentar la historia, pero al llegar Gabacho y Coco no estaban. Habían ido al pueblo, tratando de buscar respuestas a sus muchas preguntas e incertidumbres. No quisimos añadir estrés a la situación tratando de atrapar a los perros nosotros mismos, y además no queríamos que ellos regresaran y no encontraran a sus perros.

Así que planeamos para dos días después, y el Gabacho nos encontró a las 7:30 a.m. en el pueblo para ir con nosotros. Nuestra llegada al basurero se sintió triste y a la vez dulce. La mayoría de los perros estaban esperando al Gabacho, ahí junto al viejo camión oxidado que les había dado sombra por tanto tiempo y que estaba siendo desmantelado en ese momento. ¡Qué perros tan felices! Colas moviendose rápidamente, chillando de gusto, corriendo a su alrededor, parandose en las patas traseras, orejas hacia atrás. ¡Qué alivio tenen a su protector de vuelta! Las cosas a su alrededor estaban cambiando muy rápido y estaban desorientados, asustados. Los trabajos para recibir el cambio estaban avanzando a velocidad, ya que la inauguración formal de la toma de posesión  de la nueva compañía sería en solo 5 días más.

La vieja casita de cartón ya no estaba donde antes, sino aplastada y apilada hacia un lado. Las pertenencias que no habían sacado los esperaban en el departamento de policía. Gabacho acarició a sus perros en silencio, consolandolos a ellos y a sí mismo. Estaba viendo la realidad que se había estado aproximando por meses y que ahora estaba frente a él.  Caminamos con él mientras apuntaba donde había estado la mesa, la hamaca, la única pared de block. Después fuimos hacia donde están enterrados los perros que han muerto.
Miró a su alrededor y vió que la Burra, el Chel y otros perros no estaban, así que los fue a buscar. Regresó con varios perros, contentos de tenerlo de regreso. Ahora ya teníamos a los 10 perros restantes. La Cirquera ya estaba en el pueblo, en el lugar que les dió refugio temporal a Gabacho y Coco. -Estamos listos cuando quieras- le dije al Gabacho, mientras estaba ahí, tratando de digerir su desaparecido y su incierto futuro próximo. Asintió en silencio. El primero en meter a una transportadora fue el Machín, un macho grande, hijo de la Zacatecas, la más vieja.  Todos esperabamos algo de resistencia, normal, para meterse a las jaulas. Pero no hubo. Uno por uno, Gabacho los levanto gentilmente y ellos se dejaron, completamente sumisos. Con cabezas bajas y sin chistar, entraron en las transportadoras. Con diez perros abordo estabamos listos para irnos, y el Gabacho decidió irse atrás con ellos.

En el refugio, dejamos a todos los perros salir en el área de la palapa para refrescarse y tomar agua mientras conversabamos con Gabacho.  Tomaron agua, pero no se alejaron más de un metro de su protector. Le plantee la posibilidad, como último recurso, de trabajar con nosotros en el refugio de manera temporal. Me miró, sonrió y dijo: -¡Estaría con ellos!-. Tenerlo con nosotros y que ayude a cuidar a sus perros sería ideal, pero el hecho es que estamos completos de trabajadores, y agregar un salario más es una decisión que no podemos tomar a la ligera. Si esto resulta ser una opción, necesitaremos ayuda y la estamos buscando. 

Una semana después, no hemos sabido del Gabacho  y no nos sorprende. Los perros están a salvo y ellos tienen mucho que resolver. En cuanto a los perros, se les socializa juntos todos los días, y poco a poco los estamos introduciendo al mundo de los collares y correas, y del encierro temporal. Ya se les hizo la prueba  de gusano del corazón y todos menos dos salieron positivos, así que se requerirán tratamientos. Fuera de eso, están bastante sanos. Hemos tenido tan buena respuesta a esta historia, que tenemos muchas esperanzas de que podremos ayudarlos a todos. Esta vez, nuestra petición por ayuda incluye a dos hombres.

Cozumel 4 You Upcoming Scavenger Hunt

As most of you know, Cozumel 4 You has hosted a bi-weekly happy hour in a different location for over a year now. It’s given many different local restaurants & businesses the opportunity to highlight their services, and allow locals and visitors alike the chance to get together, have fun and try out new locations.  For our next event, we’re going to try something even more different…

Our next happy hour event will take place May 21st from 6 – 9 pm, starting at the Aqua Bar at the Hotel Flamingo,   and will be a walking scavenger hunt in downtown Cozumel.  After a super informative meeting with Scott of Race Fantastique Cozumel , We’ve put together a list of clues, that will teach you some  of the interesting culture and history of downtown, as well as try different drink specials, appetizers and check out several different locations all in one evening!  There will even be prizes for the winning team!  If you’d like to participate in this event, either as a contestant team, or sponsor a prize, you can do so by contacting laura@czm4you.com. There will also be an open registration at the time of the event.

Como la mayoría de ustedes sabe, Cozumel 4 you se ha albergado hacer  quincenalmente la hora feliz en diferentes ubicaciones para más de un año ahora. Cruz Roja Golf Tournament

Saturday may 22nd the Cozumel Country Club will be hosting a Golf Tournament to benefit the Cruz Roja of Cozumel.  The event will have a shotgun start with both Men's A&B and Ladies' Divisions.  The Host Hotel for the event is El Presidente Intercontinental.  They are featuring the following Golf/Hotel package which includes 2-night stay, welcome cocktail, golf kit with gifts, greens fees, shared golf cart, transportation to & from the event, drinks throughout play, farewell dinner, 15% spa discount, and donation to the Cruz Roja. Mother’s Day – Mother’s Day is May 10th this year and to celebrate many island restaurants are hosting special events to help you celebrate.  Pepe’s Grill is gifting a free bottle of wine or a 15% discount for 2 or more people, not just for Mother’s day,  but  for the entire month of May.  On Mother’s Day, La Cocay will feature new dinner specials in addition to the regular menu, and free dessert for all mothers.  In addition Kathy Klein and her culinary team is discounting 10% off your bill. Guido’s Restaurant will be hosting two evenings of French wine tastings on May 28th and 29th, featuring a flight of 8 wines, all of which will be available for sale.  The event kicks off at 8 pm and features a reknown wine expert.
