With the November 28th Ironman rapidly approaching, last Sunday Morning officers of the Public Security and Transit carried out simulated street closings in preparation for the upcoming competition.   The drill started at 9 am and lasted only one hour.  This was the first of three simulations, with the remanding two taking place on the 14th and 21st of November at the same time.  On the actual date of the Ironman street closings will start at 5:30 am and end at 5:30 pm.   Included is Av. Rafael. E  Melgar from North to South , Av. 11 to Av. 135, the highway from 135 to Mezcalito’s and the transversal highway from Av. 11, followed by Av. 13 and Av. 15 and from Av. 10 to  Rafael E. Melgar.

Representatives from the Director of Tourism are reporting that they are expecting at least 10 thousand visitors to the island, as opposed to last year’s 6 thousand.   Hotel occupancy is expected to soar over Ironman weekend, which coincidentally includes the US holiday of Thanksgiving. 

Acercándose rápidamente el 28 de noviembre con el evento Ironman, oficiales de la de la seguridad pública y tránsito  llevaran  a cabo el domingo por la mañana  el cierre de las calles simulado para la preparación para la próxima competencia. La perforación comienza a las 9 de la mañana y sólo durara una hora. Este fue el primero de tres simulaciones, las cuales se van a llevando a cabo el 14  y 21 de noviembre al mismo tiempo. En la fecha efectiva de la Ironman el cierre de la calle se inicia a las 5: 30 de la mañana y terminan en 5: 30 PM incluida la Av. Rafael. Melgar E de norte a sur, Av. 11 a AV. 135, la carretera de 135 del Mezcalito y la carretera transversal de AV. 11, seguida por la Av. 13 y Av. 15 y desde AV. 10 hasta  Rafael E. Melgar.

Representantes de la Director de turismo están informando que esperan no menos de 10 mil visitantes a la isla, a diferencia 6 mil del año pasado. Se espera que la ocupación de los hoteles se dispare durante fin de semana del Ironman, que casualmente concuerda con la fiesta de EEU con el día  de acción de gracias.

Greenpeace Boat, "Artic Sunrise" to Visit Cozumel

In conjunction with the upcoming Global Conference on Climate Change in Cancun, Cozumel will be visited by the Greenpeace boat, the “Artic Sunrise.”  The ice-breaker which is generally used to help stop the illegal hunting of whales and seals in the North Pole, will travel all the way to Cozumel through the Gulf of Mexico, arriving on the 23rd of November and staying until December 5th.  During their journey the crew will be collecting evidence of the consequences of climate change in the gulf, and the Mexican coast specifically.

Junto con la próxima Conferencia Mundial sobre el cambio climático en Cancún, Cozumel va a hacer visitado por el barco de Greenpeace, el "Sunrise glacial". El separador de hielo que se usa generalmente para ayudar a detener la caza ilegal de ballenas y focas en el Polo Norte, viajará hacia Cozumel a través del Golfo de México, que llegara el 23 de noviembre y permanecerá hasta el 5 de diciembre. Durante su viaje la tripulación va recoger pruebas de las consecuencias del cambio climático en el Golfo y de la costa mexicana específicamente.

White Tailed Deer Rescued from the Oceanfront Downtown Cozumel

Last week, concerned citizens helped to rescue something very unusual from the ocean near the downtown pier:  a white tailed deer!  Apparently the frightened creature escaped from a [reserve in the downtown area, became startled and ran into the ocean.  Spectators watched as the poor deer struggled to stay afloat due to crashing waves.   Although calls were made to the Department of Ecology, volunteers  took it upon themselves to pitch in and rescue the deer from the ocean themselves.  The Deer was unharmed.

La semana pasada, paso algo inusual los ciudadanos ayudaron a rescatar algo muy raro del océano cerca del muelle de centro de la ciudad: 1 venado de cola blanco! Al parecer la criatura asustada escapó de una reserva en el centro de la ciudad, se convirtió en una escapista y corrió hacia el océano. Los Espectadores vieron como el venado pobre luchó por mantenerse a flote debido a las grandes olas. A pesar de que el departamento de ecología acudió, algunos voluntarios tomaron iniciativa y rescataron al ciervo del océano. Saliendo  el ciervo ileso.

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Puppies, Puppies & Adult Cats- by Monica Velasco

Puppies,Puppies & Puppies - Puppy # 1 is SIFU (Chinese for Master). Big name for a little fellow who showed up weak, skinny and crusty at somebody’s doorstep. But we know he will grow up to his name’s grandness. Sifu is being pampered at foster home and gaining weight and strength. Confidence is growing much faster though! He loves to be part of a pack, and certainly eats better when among other dogs. His closest friend is a cat, he is deffinitely curious about turtles and is getting friendly with a pelican, so his social skills go well beyond the canine realm. He is nearly potty trained. Still has a residual bald patch on his back but is otherwise looking great and ready for his new home.

Puppies #2 and #3 Brandy and Suzy Q - These two girls were brought in separately and have been foster cared for by Bob and Terry, who have done an amazing job at nurturing them to good health. They were so skinny! Brandy is tan and a bit bigger; Suzy Q is petite and darker, with a prominent and endearing underbite. Beauty is deffinitely in the eye of the beholder! Her character makes her so appealing though. Both puppies are potty trained and ready for a home.

Cachorritos 1, 2 y 3.  Cachorro #1 es SIFU (Maestro o Jefe en Chino) Le queda grande el nombre, pero sabemos que este cachorro es un guerrero y alcanzará la grandeza de su nombre. Llegó muy pequeñito, sin energía, flaco y con costras en la piel. Se apareció ante la puerta de quien afortunadamente lo trajo al refugio. Ahora está muy consentido en su casa temporal, mejorando en salud y aumentando de tamaño. ¡La confianza en sí mismo avanza a grandes pasos! Sifu es felíz, juguetón, y le encanta ser parte de una manada de 5 perros más. Uno de sus mejores amigo es una gata, las tortugas encantan y está logrando un acercamiento con un pelícano, así es que sus aptitudes para socializar son interespecíficas. Ya casi está entrenado para hacer sus necesidades en su lugar y perfectamente listo para ser adoptado.

Cachorra #2 Brandy, y Cachorra #3 Ambas cachorritas llegaron al refugio, muy flacuchas. Pronto fueron recibidas en casa temporal, super bien cuidadas por Bob & Terry, quienes las han cuidado de maravilla. Brandi es de color café claro y mayor en tamaño; Suzy Q es más pequeñita y más oscura. Esta última tiene el maxilar superior tan prominente que la hace adorable. Guapísima realmente. Ambas cachorras ya están entrenadas en para ir al baño donde corresponde, y son lindas y juguetonas.

Beautiful grown up cats: Grisella, Canela, Ebony and Jessy.   Advantages of choosing an adult cat (by Sheryl Shea)  If you have considered that a companion animal would enrich your life, and you think you might go feline, consider the  advantages of adopting an adult cat. An adult cat has already developed his/her personality, so you will have more knowledge about what kind of behavior traits your cat will have. If you already have a senior cat, a kitten might be too energetic for him. Instead, a second adult cat could very well be a much better companion choice. Adult cats don’t require as much supervision as kittens do and are less likely to get into trouble or hazardous situations. Since kittens have a much higher adoption rate than adult cats do, by choosing to adopt an adult cat you could very well be saving a life. THINK BIG!

Las ventajas de adoptar un gato adulto. (Sheryl Shea)  Si has contemplado adoptar una mascota, y tu tendencia es hacia un felino, considera las ventajas de adoptar un gato ya adulto. Un adulto ya desarrolló su personalidad, de manera que tendrás una idea más clara de cómo será su carácter. Si ya tienes un gato mayor, un gatito muy joven podría tener demasiada energía para él. En cambio un segundo gato adulto bien podría ser una mejor opción como compañero. Los gatos adultos no requieren tanta supervisión como los gatitos pequeños, y son menos propensos a meterse en problemas o en situaciones de peligro. Y finalmente, como la mayoría de la gente adopta a los jovencitos, si te decides por un gato adulto bien podrías estar salvando una vida.

PROFECO

Profeco, the consumer protection agency, has announced that over $27 million pesos were returned to consumers in Quintana Roo 2009. In Cozumel alone, $1millon 3 hundred thousand pesos were returned with Profeco receiving 300 consumer complaints here in the island. 

Profeco, “Procuraduria Federal de Consumidor,” has both a webpage in English  and Spanish and has the ability to fine merchants who have been deemed to have fraudulent business practices. 

Profeco, la Agencia de protección del consumidor, ha anunciado que más $ 27 millones de pesos fueron devueltos a los consumidores en Quintana Roo el año de 2009. En Cozumel por sí sola, $ 1 million 300.000 pesos fueron devueltos por Profeco al recibir 300 quejas de consumidor aquí en la isla. 

Profeco, "Procuraduría Federal de Consumidor," tiene tanto una página Web en Ingles y español y tiene la capacidad para poner multas a los comerciantes que han tenido abuso en su negocio. 

Rancho Uinverso - by Andrea Sukula

Over this last week we had the privilege of visiting Rancho Universo (Km 11th on the transversal road), where we met with owner-operator Liliana Velasco-Ariza. Over the last 9 years, this woman has been taking in rescue horses, many of which were found to be useless by trail riding businesses and were discarded, sometimes left to die on their own. Several of them had suffered abuse in one way or another and a few were beyond help. Of the 7 resident animals, two are blind in one eye and another one had the corners of her mouth torn, probably from having the reigns brutally pulled back. Some are still skittish even after years of living in safety, and yet others will approach you like playful puppies. Each rescued horse has been nurtured, cared for and brought back to health to live peacefully at Rancho Universo. Rehabilitated, some of these horses have been able to give back. Besides her experience in horse management and as a riding instructor in the UK, Liliana is a certified Equinotherapist, which helps people with special needs by having the horse provide a powerful and natural stimulous. For many, this has made a world of difference in their lives. She also offers riding lessons to help support the care of the rescue horses. Rancho Universo would like to help more horses in need, but caring for 7 horses currently is a huge expense and the ranch needs your support. Since we visited this last week, a new horse  was brought in by one of the Angeles Verdes patrols, who found him standing in the middle of the transversal highway. This old boy, now named Whisper, is literally skin and bones and it will require a lot to bring him back to health

If you like horses and would like to volunteer at the ranch you are more than welcome to do so. The horses love attention, brushing, patting and delight on apples and carrots. Also clean-up and maintenance of the stables is an ongoing need. One of the biggest needs is of course horse feed. If you would like to donate food, or de-worming medicines, supplements and vitamins, you can visit the Purina feed store. They have a list of what Rancho Universo needs and will deliver your purchases to the ranch. Directions to the feed store: Heading down 11th Ave, you will turn left at a street called: Dr. Miguel Borge Martin (Q.Roo University on your right and another landmark is you will see the office for Sky television, this is where you turn left). Drive 4 blocks down this road and you will see the Purina store on your left, painted dark red and has baby chickens outside for sale. Top needed food for the horses: Omolin Peninsular Rolado and Nucleus Energético, Aceites Minerales.

Esta semana tuvimos el privilegio de visitar el Rancho Universo (Km 11 en la transversal), donde nos reunimos con la propietaria Liliana Velasco-Ariza. Durante los últimos 9 años, esta mujer ha recibido caballos no deseados o abandonados en diferentes circunstancias; en ocasiones animales de desecho de servicios turísticos. Varios de ellos sufrieron abuso de una u otra forma, y para algunos ya no hubo posibilidad de ayuda. De los 7 caballos residentes en el rancho, dos están ciegos de un ojo y otra tiene las comisuras de los labios desgarradas, posiblemente debido a un jalón brutal de riendas. Así como algunos todavía son muy tímidos aún después de años de vivir en el refugio, otros se te acercan igual que cachorritos juguetones. Cada uno de ellos ha recibido atención, amor y cuidados para devolverles su salud y una vida digna en el Rancho Universo. Ya rehabilitados, algunos de estos animales han dado ayuda también a personas. Además de su experiencia como entrenadora en equitación en Inglaterra, Liliana es equinoterapeuta certificada. Muchas personas con necesidades especiales se han beneficiado de este tipo de terapia, en la que el animal funciona como un potente estímulo natural en el proceso de curación. También se ofrecen clases de equitación para ayudar a solventar los costos de manutención de los animales. En Rancho Universo quisieran ayudar a más caballos, pero los costos son muy altos y se requiere mucho apoyo. Días después de nuestra visita al rancho llegó un nuevo caballo, con lo cual ya suman ocho. Es un animal ya viejo al que le han puesto por nombre Whisper (Suspiro), y fue encontrado por una patrulla de los Angeles Verdes en plena transversal, literalmente en carne y hueso. Ayudar a Whisper requerirá gastos importantes, así que Rancho Universo pide tu ayuda.
Si te gustan los caballos, eres bienvenido como voluntario. A los caballos les encanta que los cepillen y apapachen, y que los consientan con zanahorias y manzanas. Por supuesto, la limpieza y mantenimiento de los establos es una necesidad constante.
Una de las principales necesidades es por supuesto el alimento. Si te gustaría donar alimento, desparasitantes y/o suplementos, la tienda de Purina tiene una lista de lo que necesitan en Rancho Universo y ellos mismos lo entregan en el domicilio.  La tienda está en la Avenida Miguel Borge Martin a 4 cuadras de la 11 Ave (dar vuelta donde está la UQROO). El alimento que requieren es Omolin Peninsular Rolado y Nucleus Energético con aceites minerales.
