Tuesday: Cruise Ships in Every Cozumel Pier, First Time in 7 Months

This past Tuesday marked the first time in seven months that there were cruise ships in all three Cozumel piers on the same day.  With 6 ships in port, there were an estimated 16,000 visitors to the island.  Although Cozumel hosts the largest port in the State of Quintana Roo, the last time all piers had ships in port at the same time was April.   Many representatives of the tourism industry are taking this as a positive sign that High Season is indeed here, and that it will be a strong season.

El martes pasado fue la primera ocasión que en siete meses tuvimos buques turísticos en los tres muelles de Cozumel en un mismo día. Con 6 barcos en el puerto, se estimó que 16,000 personas visitaron la Isla. Aunque Cozumel cuenta con el puerto más grande en el Estado de Quintana Roo, la última vez que todos los muelles estuvieron ocupados por buques turísticos a la vez fue en el mes de Abril. Muchos representantes de la industria del turismo toman esto como una señal positiva en cuanto a que la temporada alta ya está aquí y que será una temporada fuerte. 

107 Local Merchants Prepare for "Buen Fin" – This Weekend : 15th – 17th

Local merchants are gearing up for this weekend’s “Buen Fin” sales. Scheduled to take place from November 15th – 1t7th, the event, in which over 100 local merchants are participating, is Mexico’s alternative to the USA’s “Black Friday” sales.  Consumers can expect deep discounts in electronics, appliances, hotel rooms and even taxi fares and  ferry crossings.  This is the third year Cozumel has participated in the event.  For more information, or to check out the vendors, click on the   El Buen Fin webpage.

Este fin de semana 107 comerciantes locales se alistan para el "Buen Fin" del 15 al 17"

Los comerciantes locales se preparan para las ventas  del "Buen Fin" este fin de semana. El evento que se llevará a cabo del día 15 al 17 y en el cual participan más de 100 comercios locales, es la alternativa mexicana al “viernes Negro” de los E.UA. Los consumidores pueden esperar grandes descuentos en electrónica, electrodomésticos, habitaciones de hotel e incluso tarifas de taxi y los cruces en los ferries. Cozumel Readies for December Events: Ford Ironman Triathlon & 2013 ScubaFest

Cozumel’s sold-out Ironman Triathlon is just over two weeks away.  With nearly 2,700 registrants arriving, Cozumel will be bursting with activity.  National carrier, Interjet has augmented flights specifically for the event, as projected hotel occupancy will soar to nearly 90%.   For all the details, be sure and check out the official site, in both English and Spanish.

Less than 2 weeks after the Ironman event, Cozumel will host the second annual Scuba Fest on  December 12-15.   Divers from around the world will converge on Cozumel to celebrate the beauty of our marine life, provide recognition for men and women defending our oceans and to dive the newly designated "Mayan Reef Road" of Cozumel.   Jean Michel Cousteau, son of the famous underwater explorer, Jacques Cousteau, will be on hand. Also running in conjunction with Scubafest will be “Taste of Cozumel,” featuring various restaurants and local producers, as well as the “Cozumel Photo Shootout.”  For more details check out the  ScubaFest webpage.

Cozumel se prepara para los eventos decembrinos: el Triatlón Ford Ironman y el Scuba Fest2013

En menos de dos semanas se llevará a cabo el Triatlón Ironman cuyas ventas ya se han agotado. Con cerca de la llegada de casi 2,700 participantes, Cozumel estará repleta de actividad. La aerolínea nacional Interjet incrementó vuelos específicamente para el evento ya que se prevé una ocupación hotelera prevista cercana a 90%. Menos de 2 semanas después del evento Ironman, Cozumel será sede del segundo Festival anual de Scuba Fest los días 12 al 15 de diciembre. Buzos de todo el mundo se reunirán en Cozumel para celebrar la belleza de nuestra vida marina, reconocer a los hombres y a las mujeres que defienden nuestros océanos y para bucear en  el recién creado "Camino Arrecife Maya" de Cozumel. Jean Michel Cousteau, hijo del famoso explorador submarino Jacques Cousteau, estará presente. Junto con el evento Scuba Fest estará "Taste of Cozumel", presentando a varios restaurantes y productores locales así como el "Cozumel Photo Shootout." Humane Society Pets of the Week

CAT: Tiger, beautiful orange tabby, male 2 years old. His story is quite sad. He was badly injured after being hit by a car and brought for treatment. The family ended up abandoning him after many promises to come back and pick him up. He has not been doing well and several attempts were made by HS staff to have the family come a reclaim him. He is not happy living in the adult cattery with other adult cats, it is too stressful, and he wants to hide all day long. He urgently needs a home and will do fine indoors and outdoors. Admission date August 21, 2013

DOG: Tigre, named after the cereal's mascot: Tigre Toño. he's a male 1 year old. Weight 20.6 kg. Tigre is a beautiful dog, possibly mix pit and plott hound. Already neutered. He invited himself into a home where he ate all day. A young man known in the neighborhood as a thug, tried to tell the woman he was his. She did not believe him and Tigre has several scars that look like dog bites to his neck. He may have been used in fighting as bait. She brought him to the Humane Society in hopes that his real owners may show up. He is a very nice dog. Nobody has come to claim him so he is now up for adoption. He is all kisses and love. Admission date October 14, 2013

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

GATO : Tiger, hermoso macho tabby color naranja de 2 años de edad. Su historia es bastante triste. Fue herido de gravedad tras ser atropellado por un coche y se le trajo para el tratamiento. La familia terminó abandonándolo después de muchas promesas de volver y recogerlo. No le ha ido bien y el personal de la Sociedad Humanitaria ha realizado diversos intentos para que la familia venga a reclamarlo. No le agrada estar en el criadero de adultos con otros gatos adultos; le es demasiado estresante y todo el día quiere ocultarse. Necesita un hogar urgentemente, y estará muy bien tanto en interiores como en exteriores. Fecha de entrada: Agosto 21, 2013

PERRO: Tigre, cuyo nombre lo debe a la mascota de los cereales: Tigre Toño, es un macho de 1 año de edad. Pesa 20.6 kg. Tigre es un perro hermoso, posiblemente mezcla pit bull y plott hound. Ya castrado. Se auto-invitó a una casa en donde comió todo el día. Un joven, a quien en la colonia se le conoce como maleante, le dijo a la mujer de la casa que el perro le pertenecía. Ella no le creyó y Tigre tiene varias cicatrices en el cuello que parecen ser mordidas de perro. Es posible que lo hayan usado como carnada en peleas. Esta mujer lo trajo a la Sociedad Humanitaria con la esperanza de que sus verdaderos propietarios aparezcan. Es un perro muy bonito. Nadie ha venido a reclamarlo por lo que ahora está en adopción. Es todos besos y amor. Fecha de ingreso: Octubre 14, 2013.

Cozumel's Record November Rains Have CAPA Working Non-Stop

Traditionally, October is considered to be the wettest month here in Cozumel.    Marking the tail end of hurricane season, November generally has less rain, and cooler evenings; caused in part by the cold fronts that oftentimes roll in during the month.  However, this year November has also been marked with heavy, record-breaking rainfall. 

According to authorities from Comisión de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado (CAPA) brigades of workers have been kept busy almost non-stop with  “Operativo Tormenta”  helping to drain low lying, flood sensitive areas, including parts of the northern hotel zone and inner low-lying areas.

Tradicionalmente el mes de octubre está considerado como el de mayor cantidad de lluvias en Cozumel. Marcando el final de la temporada de huracanes, generalmente el mes de noviembre tiene menor cantidad de lluvia y la temperatura por las noches es más fresca; ello debido, en parte, a los frentes fríos que  se presentan durante el transcurso del mes. Sin embargo, este mes de noviembre también se ha distinguido por lluvias fuertes cuyas precipitaciones no tienen precedente.
Según las autoridades de la Comisión de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado (CAPA), las brigadas de trabajadores han estado trabajando incesantemente en el “Operativo Tormenta”, ayudando ayudar a drenar áreas bajas y tendientes a inundarse, incluyendo partes de la zona hotelera norte y áreas interiores bajas.
