Last Weekend's "Buen Fin"a Success, Black Friday Cozumel Up Next

In 1942 the 201st Fighting Squadron known as the Aztec Eagles went into battle alongside members of the Allied Forces.  Thirty-five officers and 294 soldiers of the Mexican Air Force flew P-47 Thunderbolt planes against the Axis forces.  In fact, three of these planes can be found in front of the Military Base #4, located at the beginning of the North Hotel Zone.   Last week military officials and a veteran of the Aztec Eagles gathered to honor these brave men, who were decorated by both the USA and Mexico, and who participated in over 50 combat missions.  For more information on the Aztec Eagles this webpage has the complete story, along with a video presentation.   

Honran en Cozumel a los miembros del Escuadrón Águilas Aztecas quienes pelearon en la II Guerra Mundial

En el año 1942 el escuadrón de combate conocido como Águilas Aztecas, participó en la batalla a la par de miembros de las Fuerzas Aliadas. Treinta y cinco oficiales y 294 soldados de la Fuerza Aérea Mexicana volaron aviones P-47 Thunderbolt contra las Fuerzas del Eje. De hecho, tres de estos aviones pueden verse frente a la Base Aérea Militar #4, ubicada al inicio de la Zona Hotelera Norte. La semana pasada oficiales militares y veteranos de las Águilas Aztecas se unieron para honrar a estos hombres valientes quienes fueran condecorados tanto por los Estados Unidos como México, y quienes participaron en más de 50 misiones de combate. 14th Annual Humane Society Art Auction to be held Friday December 2nd

The 14th Annual Humane Society Art Auction will take place in Friday December 2nd fro 6 – 9 pm at the French Quarter Restaurant.  This is a very fun event and a great way to get out and not only see some great local art, but meet a lot of the artists themselves.  Many island artists have generously donated their works to help out a great cause.  Greg Dietrich, from the Galeria Azul, will once again serve as the auctioneer.  The French Quarter is located on 5 Av between Salas and Calle 3, just south of the downtown zocalo.

La 14ª Subasta Anual de Arte de la Sociedad Protectora de Animales se efectuará el viernes 02 de diciembre, de 6 a 9 p.m. en el restaurante French Quarter. Este es un evento muy divertido y una buena forma para salir y no sólo ver excelente arte local, sino también para conocer a algunos de los artistas. Muchos artistas de la isla han donado generosamente sus obras para apoyar una gran causa. Greg Dietrich de Galería Azul nuevamente será el subastador. El restaurante French Quarter se ubica en la 5 Ave entre Salas y Calle 3, justo al sur del zócalo en el centro.

Bicycle Lights to Become Mandatory Starting December 1

Starting December 1st bicycles in Cozumel will be required to have a light, in order to be more visible at night. Bicycles ad tricycles have always been a big source of transportation here on the island, and can oftentimes be difficult to see, especially on some of the smaller roads that may not be well illuminated.  Just like mandatory helmets for scooters and motorcycles, this new requirement will add an extra measure of safety for island residents.

A partir el 01 de Diciembre las luces de las bicicletas serán obligatorias

A partir del día 1º de diciembre será obligatorio que las bicicletas en Cozumel tengan una luz; ello con el objeto de hacerlas más visibles durante la noche. Las bicicletas y los triciclos siempre han sido un gran medio de transporte en la Isla y muchas de las veces es difícil distinguirlas, especialmente en algunas vialidades pequeñas que pueden no estar bien iluminadas. De la misma forma que es obligatorio portar casco para andar en motonetas y motocicletas, este nuevo requisito añadirá medidas de seguridad a los residentes de la isla.

Son of Rafael E. Melgar Donates 14 Photos to the Museo de la Isla

During visit to the Island, the son of General Rafael E. Melgar,   sr, Daniel L. Melgar  was kind enough to donate 14 photos taken by his father to the Museo de la Isla.  The General, for whom our waterfront street is named after, was Governor of the then Territory of Quintana Roo, from 1935 to 1940.

Durante su visita a la Isla, el Sr. Daniel L. Melgar hijo del General Rafael E. Melgar, generosamente donó al Museo de la Isla 14 fotografías tomadas por su padre. El General, cuyo nombre fuera dado a nuestro malecón,  fue Gobernador del entonces territorio de Quintana Roo, del año 1935 al año 1940.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

MIEL (HONEY) - Her name might have been inspired by her sweet nature or the color of her eyes. Little Miel was found lost and alone, when we were all preparing for possible hurricane Rina. The young lady gave her shelter for a few days and then brought her to us. We are so glad Miel didn't endure the storm on her own! She is a 4-month old puppy who loves everyone and plays with everything. She is a little hyper so anyone adopting her has to consider giving her a lot of exercise time. What a honey of a puppy!

KALI - Kali is another sweet, 4-month old puppy. He was abandoned at somebody's doorstep. Full of playfulness and health, Kali is a fun puppy. He also qualifies as hyper so think of activities if you like him. Kali is a dog who wastes no time in being bored, he just likes to have fun. Kali loves people, children, dogs, cats... he loves everyone!

DEXTER - Adorable puppy who has a home now thanks to Cindy form CIEMA and her volunteers. He met his future family during a visit to the International Pier and he is now home in Mahuah, NJ. See his photos, at the shelter and with his new BIG BROTHER. Thanks also to the escorts who took him home!

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

MIEL - Ella es una dulzura de cachorrita, como su nombre y sus ojitos. Cuando todos nos preparabamos para el posible huracán Rina, ella vagaba solita en la calle. Afortunadamente la encontró una muchacha y la llevó a su casa. La cuidó por unos días y despúes la trajo con nosotros. Miel es una cachorrita de 4 meses, con orejitas suaves y ojos que reflejan la dulzura de su carácter. Es muy cariñosa y juguetona, y tiene mucha energía así que, si estás interesado en ella piensa en darle mucho tiempo de ejercicio!

KALI - Otro cachorrito de 4 meses. Kali fue abandonado a las puertas de una casa en perfectas condiciones de limpieza y salud. Es un perrito muy divertido! Kali no pierde el tiempo en aburrirse, se divierte con cualquier cosa. Le encanta la gente, los perros, los gatos, los niños... todo!

DEXTER - Es un cachorrito divino que ahora tiene un nuevo hogar gracias a Cindy, de CIEMA y a su equipo de voluntarios. En una visita al Muelle Internacional conoció a su futura familia y ahora ya está en casa en Mahuah, Nueva Jersey. Vean las fotos de Dexter en el refugio y (aunque un poco borrosa) en casa con su nuevo BIG BROTHER. Gracias a las personas que lo acompañaron en su viaja a casa!

Last Weekend's "Buen Fin"a Success, Black Friday Cozumel Up Next

Over 135 Cozumel stores participated in “Buen Fin,”which took place last weekend. The national program was designed to stimulate the economy by allowing consumers to take advantage of some deep discounts. Friday November 25th marks the beginning of “Black Friday Cozumel,” another discounted shopping weekend, similar to those in the United States, which traditionally take place the weekend after the American holiday of Thanksgiving, where consumers traditionally begin their Christmas shopping. “Black Friday Cozumel “continues through Sunday the 27th, and includes a local producers fair in the downtown Zocalo all weekend.

Gran éxito del "Buen Fin" el fin de semana pasado; después seguirá el "Viernes Negro" en Cozumel

Más de 135 tiendas en Cozumel participaron en el “Buen Fin” efectuado este último fin de semana. El programa nacional fue diseñado para estimular la economía y permitir que los consumidores aprovecharan algunos descuentos importantes. El viernes 25 de noviembre marca el comienzo del “Viernes Negro en Cozumel”, otro fin de semana de con descuentos en las compras, muy similar a la tradición estadounidense que generalmente tiene lugar el fin de semana posterior al Día de Gracias, cuando los consumidores inician las compras de regalos navideños. El “Viernes Negro en Cozumel” continuará hasta el domingo 27, e incluye la Feria de Productores Locales en el Zócalo durante todo el fin de semana.

Silent March in support of victims of HIV/AIDS -  On December 1st,starting at 5 pm, there will be a silent, harmonious march in support of anyone affected by HIV/AIDS.  Participants are urged to wear white clothing, and bring a candle, photos or other mementos.    The march is open to all, especially anyone who has had a friend, loved one, or family member with an immune deficiency disease.   The march will begin from the Monument of the Mestizaje (just north of the Port Captain) and proceed down to the flag in front of the zocalo, where there will be a small ceremony.

Marcha silenciosa para apoyar a las víctimas de VIH/SIDA – El  día 1º de diciembre, a partir de las 5 p.m. habrá una marcha en silencio y armonía en apoyo a quienes se encuentran afectados por el VIH/SIDA. Se exhorta a los participantes que vistan ropa color blanco, una vela, fotos u otros recuerdos. La marcha está abierta a todo el público, especialmente para quien haya tenido un amigo o miembro de familia afectado con esta inmunodeficiencia. La marcha comenzará en el Monumento al Mestizaje (justo al norte de la Capitanía del Puerto) y procederá hacia la bandera del zócalo en donde se llevara a cabo una pequeña ceremonia.
