Hurricane Paula was the fastest developing hurricane in history. In fact, cruise ships arrived on Tuesday morning and by the evening store fronts on the Malecon were boarded up and the streets were empty.  Tuesday evening tracking reports began to show signs that Hurricane Paula might be heading toward the northeast.  This was indeed the case, since an astonished Cozumel awoke on Wednesday morning to discover that the eye of the hurricane passed within 125 miles of Cozumel in the early morning hours, without leaving significant rainfall or winds.  Overjoyed residents of the Island of Peace, were gifted with an additional day off, since the majority of schools and businesses were closed Wednesday.

Cozumel had a similar experience in 2007 with Hurricane Dean.  All preliminary reports showed a direct hit.  Cozumel residents, boarded up and prepared for the worst, however, this time, Hurricane Dean turned south, missing Cozumel entirely.

El Huracán Paula  fue el huracán más rápido desarrollado en la historia. De hecho, cruceros llegaron el martes por la mañana y por de noche las tiendas se prepararon para el evento  en el Malecón y las calles estaban vacías. El martes por la noche se informo de seguimiento, empezando a mostrar signos que Huracán Paula el cual  podría estar dirigiéndose hacia el noreste. De hecho fue el caso, ya que un Cozumel todos, asombrados se despertaron el miércoles por la mañana para descubrir que el ojo del huracán pasó a 125 millas de Cozumel en las horas de la madrugada, sin dejar lluvias importantes vientos violentos. Encantados los residentes de la isla de la paz, fueron dotados de un día extra de gozo, ya que la mayoría de las escuelas y las empresas  cerraron el miércoles.

Cozumel tuvo una experiencia similar en 2007 con el paso del huracán Dean. Todos los informes preliminares mostraron un golpe directo. Los residentes de Cozumel, preparado para lo peor, sin embargo, esta vez, el  huracán Dean se dirigió hacia el sur, donde no efecto a Cozumel.

Third Lionfish Tournament of This Year Planned

The Third Lionfish tournament of the year is scheduled for October 24th at the Punta Langosta pier.  The marine park, “Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel,” who is sponsoring the event, has discovered these tournaments to be an effective way to help keep the lionfish population in check.   Over 25 thousand pesos will be awarded in prizes.  For more information on how to participate, contact the marine park at  987 872 2409.

Lionfish are not indigenous to the Caribbean, and as a result do not have many natural predators here.  In the Indo-pacific region where they are from, they are hunted by frog fish, large eels and other larger lionfish.

El tercer torneo del pez león está programado para el 24 de octubre en el muelle de Punta Langosta. El Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel, que patrocina el evento, ha descubierto estos torneos para ser un medio eficaz para ayudar a mantener el pez león en baja población. El Pez león no es endémico del Caribe y como resultado no tiene muchos depredadores naturales aquí. En la región Indo-Pacífico donde proceden, son cazados por peces ranas, anguilas grandes y otros grandes peces.

Roadblocks Check Over 4,000 Vehicles

Cozumel Police have been conducting spot roadblocks on some of Cozumel’s busiest streets.  over the last two weeks.  Officers have been checking drivers licenses, and registration papers (tarjetas de circulación).  Officials have reported that during this period over 4,000 vehicles were checked. 

La Policía de Cozumel han llevado a cabo retenes en algunas de las calles más ocupadas de Cozumel. En las últimas dos semanas. Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Don Virgilio - by Monica Velasco

Don Virgilio (Camarita) is back home.  Back in late June we shared with you the story of Don Virgilio Camara, known as Camarita, the man who lived alone in the jungle just North of the Country Club. He did so for many years, enjoying his solitude but accompanied always by his dogs. A very friendly man and with lots of stories to tell, he also enjoys the company of the many people who know him and love him. Four months ago he had a stroke and half of his body was paralyzed. His dogs were a great concern of his, so Beatríz Cornejo, one of his dear friends and also good friend of ours, called us and we took in his three dogs. Two of them required expensive heartworm treatment and through Cozumel 4 You people offered help. We placed them in new homes assuming that Camarita would no longer be able to go back in the jungle. But he turned out to be stronger and more resilient than any of us thought. The man is pushing a wheel chair, but back in the jungle and happy to be there. His youngest dog, a little black pup whom he named Aluxe as he just appeared from nowhere, was still at the shelter when Camarita went home. So a few days ago we took Aluxe back to him, and a bonus of new life filled Camarita’s soul when he was able to hug his dog. Don Virgilio is a formidable man, who needs little to be well and finds joy where many would not be able to see it. 

Camarita regresó a casa.  A fines de Junio pasado compartimos con ustedes la historia de Don Virgilio Cámara, conocido como Camarita, el hombre que vivía solo en la selva al Norte del Country Club. Así vivió por muchos años, disfrutando su soledad pero acompañado siempre de sus perros. Un hombre muy amigable y con muchas historias que contar, Camarita disfruta también de la amistad y compañía de muchas personas que lo aprecian. Hace unos cuatro meses tuvo una embolia y la mitad de su cuerpo se paralizó. Sus tres perros eran su gran preocupación, así que su buena amiga Beatríz Cornejo nos llamó y fuimos por ellos. Dos de ellos necesitaron tratamiento para el gusano de corazón, y gracias a quienes a través de Cozumel 4 You se enteraron y enviaron ayuda pudimos curarlos. Ya sanos se fueron con nuevas familias, puesto que asumimos que Camarita no regresaría a su casa en la selva. Pero Camarita resultó ser un hueso duro de roer. Hace días que está de regreso, empujando una silla de ruedas pero de vuelta en la selva y felíz de estar ahí. Así que le llevamos al único de sus perros que seguía en el refugio, el Aluxe. El abrazar a su perrito, chaparrito y negro, le llenó el alma. Don Virgilio es un hombre formidable, que necesita poco para estar bien y encuentra alegría pura en donde muchos no la podrían ver.

Drunk Drivers Offered Free Rides Home

Cozumel Police have started a service where inebriated drivers can call police officers who will drive them, and their automobiles, home free of charge.  This program was initiated to help reduce drunk drivers on the road.  Sadly, the newspaper Por Esto, has reported that no one is using this service. Police have set up a special cell phone number for a free ride:  987 112 8340.  To contact the Cozumel Police, dial 066 for an emergency and 872 9800 for non-emergencies.

La Policía de Cozumel han comenzado un servicio donde los conductores ebrios pueden llamar a los agentes de policía para llevarlos a ellos y sus automóviles a casa de forma gratuita. Este programa se inició para ayudar a reducir los choferes borrachos en las carreteras. Por desgracia, el diario Por Esto, ha informado que nadie utiliza este servicio. La Policía ha establecido un número de teléfono especial para un paseo libre: 987 112 8340. Para ponerse en contacto con la policía de Cozumel, marcar 066 para una emergencia y 872 9800 para situaciones normales.

Happy Birthday to the State of Quintana Roo

The State of Quintana Roo marked it’s 36 birthday last week. The state’s official name is  Estado Libre y Soberano de Quintana Roo (Free and Sovereign State of Quintana Roo).  Together with Baja California Sur, who was also granted State status on October 8, 1974, .Quintana Roo, and Baja California Sur, are  the youngest states in all of Mexico. 

El estado de Quintana Roo a marcado 36 cumpleaños la semana pasada. El nombre del Estado oficial es Estado Libre y Soberano de Quintana Roo. Junto con la Baja California Sur, que también se concedió al Estado el 8 de octubre de 1974, Quintana Roo y Baja California Sur, son los Estados más joven en todo México.

Cozumel Community Working Together: Foster Animals Find Homes

Some of you may remember Waffles and Muffin, the two adorable puppies that Monica, from the Humane Society and Funky Bazaar, was fostering.  Once again the Cozumel community came through, and these two puppies found an amazing family with 2 children!  Best of all they can be together forever!

The next animal in need of a new home is Magoo the cat.  Almost everyone knows "Cozumel Carol" and her blog about the island. Carol has been planning on leaving Cozumel for some time now and she's just had a new snag, she can’t take her cat with her.  Here's Magoo's story:  Magoo  was a tiny feral kitten in January, living on the streets. I tried to bring him in when I heard him crying. After a few days I managed to trap him. I tamed him and had him vaccinated, neutered and have kept him since. He still has a little of the wild kitty in him. But when you get to know him, he has a thunderous purr and will snuggle with you He mostly likes to be outdoors, but sometimes he wants to come in. When he does, he is litter trained. He is still less than a year old and I believe would adopt to a new situation. It is heartbreaking for me to have to leave him behind, but that is the reality. Please anyone, can you step up here. Can you or do you know someone that can give Magoo the loving home he deserved.  Please contact Carole at cozumelcarol@gmail.com

Algunos de ustedes pueden recordar waffles y muffin, los dos cachorros adorables que Mónica, de la sociedad humanataria y Funky Bazaar.. Una vez más la comunidad de Cozumel llegó a través de  estos dos cachorros a fundar una familia increíble con 2 niños! Lo mejor de todo que pueden estar juntos para siempre!

El animal siguiente con necesidad de un nuevo hogar es Magoo el gato. Casi todo el mundo sabe "Car Cozumel Carol" y su blog sobre la isla. Carol ha  planificado salir de Cozumel dejando desde hace algún tiempo y sólo ha tenido un nuevo tropiezo, ella no puede tomar su gato con ella. Ésta es la historia de Magoo: Magoo fue un pequeño gatito salvaje en enero, en cual vivió  en las calles. He intentado traerlo cuando escuché le llorando. Después de unos días, he podido atraparle. Yo le domesticados y le vacunados, castrados y han mantenido le desde. Todavía tiene un poco de gato silvestre en él. Pero cuando llegas a conocerlo, él tiene un ronroneo especial el cual será acurrucarse con usted que en su mayoría le gusta estar al aire libre, pero a veces quiere venir. Cuando lo hace, él está pendiente. Él es todavía es menor a un año de edad y creo que adoptaría a una nueva situación. Es desgarrador para mí tener que  dejarlo atrás, pero esa es la realidad. Por favor, alguien  puede adoptarlo. ¿Puede o hacer usted conoce a alguien que puede dar Magoo el hogar amoroso que se merecía. Póngase en contacto con Carole cozumelcarol@gmail.com.
