The Cozumel Asociacion de Hoteles has just announced the dates of the Pre-Carnaval celebrations and the Carnaval Parades!  This year, the pre-carnaval festivities, including the competition for King and Queen, will take place on Saturdays in February (5th, 12th, and 20th).  The actual Carnaval, including the street parades, will take place from March 2 – 9th.    Unlike some other parts in the world, Cozumel’s Carnaval dates vary from year to year, and are not directly tied to the beginning of the Catholic celebration of Lent.

Las Asociación de Hoteles de Cozumel  acaba de anunciar las fechas de las fiestas de de Pre Carnaval y los desfiles para  Carnaval! Este año, las fiestas de pre carnaval, incluyendo la competencia por el rey y la reina, se llevará a cabo los sábado en febrero (5  12 y 20). El Carnaval real, incluyendo los desfiles de la calles, llevará a cabo del 2 de marzo al 9. A diferencia de algunas otras partes del mundo, las fechas de Carnaval de Cozumel varían de año con año y no están directamente ligadas al comienzo de la celebración católica de la Cuaresma.

Daylight Savings Time Change Comes Early in Mexico

Daylight Savings Time in Cozumel ends on the last Sunday in October, which this year falls on Sunday, October 31st at which time clocks are set back one hour.  The United States and Canada end their Daylight Savings on the first Sunday in November, which is November 7th.This means that for one week only Cozumel will be 2 hours behind eastern standard time (EST) so when we change here on the island,  for one week only, we will be 2 hours behind EST, although Cozumel is in the Central time zone  just like large US cities like Chicago and Houston.

El  cambio de horario para el ahorro de energía en Cozumel será  el domingo 31 de octubre donde los relojes los tendremos que retrasar  una hora. Los Estados Unidos y  Canadá realizaran sus cambios de horarios el 7 de Noviembre primer domingo del mes. Esto significa que por una semana Cozumel estará 2 horas atrasado de la hora estándar del este (EST); aunque Cozumel este en la zona horaria central  como ciudades grandes de los E.U.A como Chicago y Houston.

Guido's Restaurant Helps Out Local Economy

The next time you dine at Guido’s Restaurant you might notice something different other than the new menu.  Guido’s is doing their part to help the Cozumel economy, during our slower season. Owner, Yvonne Villiger, was able to drop her prices an overall 20%, without any sacrifice to portion size or quality.  Best of all, if you present your plan locale card or Cozumel license, you’re entitled to an additional 15% off, making an overall discount for island residents a significant 35%.  Don’t wait too long to take advantage of this special discount, since the additional local 15% is only valid until December.

La próxima vez que cene en el restaurante de Guido puede observar algo diferente en el nuevo menú. Guido está haciendo su parte para ayudar a la economía de Cozumel, durante nuestra temporada baja. La Propietaria, Yvonne Villiger, fue capaz de colocar sus precios un 20% menos, sin sacrificar el tamaño de la porción o la calidad. Lo mejor de todo, si presentas tu credencial de plan local o licencia de Cozumel, tiene derecho a un 15% adicional, haciendo un descuento global para los residentes de la isla un significativo de 35%. No espere demasiado tiempo para aprovechar este descuento especial, ya que el 15% adicional de local sólo es válido hasta diciembre.

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Brandi, Suzy Q & Fluffy Tabby Kitten - by Monica Velasco

Remember Waffles and Muffin? Well, they are now happily adopted (together!!!) to a great family with two boys. Now Brandi and Suzy Q need a home. The two girls are kindly being fostered by Bob and Terry Perez until they get a bit stronger. Brandi was found at a construction site by Heidi Piccolo; she gave the puppy a nice bath, fed her and brought her to the shelter. She is about 8 weeks old and is all energy and lots of fun, keeping her foster parents busy. In contrast, Suzy Q is small and dainty, about 6 weeks old, very mellow and loving. Some people heard this baby whimpering in the bushes of an empty lot, picked her up (thank you!) and brought her to the shelter. It seems that somebody may have stepped on her tail at some point because it is bent at the tip, like a pan-handle. No worries though, it doesn’t hurt now and it adds to her personality.

Recuerdan a Waffles y Muffin? Ya están felízmente adoptadas (¡juntas!) con una excelente familia con dos niños. Ahora Brandi y Suzy Q necesitan hogar. Mientras se ponen más fuertes y listas para su hogar definitivo, están bajo los  cuidados de Bob y Terry Perez. A Brandi la encontró Heidi Piccolo, solita y abandonada en una obra. Le dió un buen baño y comida, y la llevó al refugio. Ahora esta cachorrita no tiene preocupación alguna y para ella todo es juego, a sus 8 semanas de edad.  Suzy Q es otra personalidad. Es delicada y pequeñita, de unas 5 o 6 semanas de edad,muy tranquila y cariñosa. Quien la entregó en el refugio cuenta haberla escuchado llorar en el monte de un terreno baldío. Parece que en algún momento alguien le debe haber pisado el rabito porque lo tiene doblado en la punta, como mango de sartén. Lo bueno es que ya no le duele y le dá un toque único a su personalidad.

And speaking of FOSTERING... We always need people to help us out. Sometimes because puppies or kittens (like the ones in the photo) are too young and need extra care. Some other times it is to help socialize grown-ups. We will provide the food and medicines of course, but when people allow them in their homes temporarily, it makes a great difference and helps them get adopted.

Y hablando de CASAS PUENTE (FOSTER)... Siempre necesitamos ayuda para algunos bichos. A veces es porque son cachorritos o gatitos (como los de la foto) tan pequeñitos que necesitan más cuidados y por más horas. Otras veces es para ayudarnos a socializar a algunos animales adultos que lo necesitan. Nosotros damos el alimento y las medicinas por supuesto, pero cuando hay personas que los aceptan temporalmente en sus familias, hace una enorme diferencia en ellos y los ayuda a ser adoptados.

No name for this cutie yet, but he is CUTE! One more story of a kitten found alone crying in an empty lot. He is very young and with a foster mom, and soon will be ready for a permanent home. He is gorgeous, with a long soft coat and light eyes.

Este bichito todavía no tiene nombre ¡pero está rechulo! Uno más en la lista de pequeños gatitos encontrados solitos, llorando en algún llano. Es muy pequeño así que ahora está en una casa puente, pero pronto estará listo para ser adoptado. Está precioso, pachoncito, con pelo largo y ojos claros.

Cozumel Cruz Roja Looking for Volunteers for Ironman

As it did last year, the Cozumel Cruz Roja will be running the emergency medical service and staffing the medical tent at Ironman. And, this year, it hopes to offer a station to reunite competitors with their friends and family during and after the event. This means that we need English-speaking (including bilingual!) medical and lay volunteers to assist over the course of this very long day. Nurses, doctors, EMT's & paramedics will take charge of an "advance triage" area near the finish line to determine which competitors require medical services vs post-race observation, massage and/or nutritional recovery. Some of these trained volunteers will be stationed in the recovery tent to observe and others will be needed in the medical tent to run IV's, warm patients, etc. Non-medical people are needed to run the "reunion" area, which must coordinate with Ironman staff, the registrar at the med tent and the ambulance service to track the competitors. There are also some thankless tasks that must be done that day, such as keeping the med tent clean and shopping for any unexpected but necessary supplies. These services open at the start of the race and close around 4 or 5am Monday morning. Most volunteers will be utilized between 12pm and 1am. Shift length will be determined by volunteer response. Como lo hizo el año pasado, la Cruz Roja de Cozumel ejecuta el servicio médico de emergencia y la carpa médica en el evento de  Ironman con ayuda de personal. Y, este año, espera ofrecer una estación para reunir a los competidores con sus amigos y familiares durante y después del evento. Esto significa que necesitamos voluntarios médicos y otros voluntarios que hablen ingles para ayudar en el transcurso de este día largo. Enfermeras, médicos, de EMT & paramédicos se encargarán de un área de "evaluación de avance" cerca de la línea de meta para determinar qué competidores requieren servicios médicos con posterior observación, masaje y recuperación nutricional. Algunos de estos voluntarios entrenados estarán estacionados en la carpa de recuperación para observar y otros necesitarán en la carpa de médica para ejecutar IV, los pacientes calientes, etc.. Personas no médicas necesarias para ejecutar el área de "reunión", que debe coordinar con el personal de Ironman, el registrador en la carpa de médicos y el servicio de ambulancia para realizar un seguimiento de los competidores. También hay algunas tareas difíciles que hay que hacer ese día, tales como mantener la carpa medica limpia y compras para cualquier suministro inesperado, pero necesario. Estos servicios abren al comienzo de la carrera y cierran alrededor de 4 o 5 de la mañana el lunes por la mañana. La mayoría de los voluntarios se utilizarán entre 12 pm y 1 de la madrugada. Commemorating the Anniversary of Women's Right to Vote in Mexico

On October 17, 1953 Women in Mexico were granted the full extent of their civil rights and were given the right to vote in National elections .and hold public office.  The state of Yucatan was the first state in Mexico to grant women limited voting rights, in regional and congress elections only, in 1922.  Tabasco followed in 1934, with the same restrictions.  In 1947 the entire country granted women voting rights on the regional levels, with full rights finally being granted in 1953. 

El 17 de octubre de 1953, las mujeres en México recibieron la totalidad de sus derechos civiles y recibieron el derecho a votar en elecciones nacionales y  a la espera de cargos públicos. El estado de Yucatán fue el primer Estado en México a conceder a las mujeres un limitado derecho de voto, en las elecciones regionales y el Congreso sólo, en 1922. Tabasco seguido en 1934, con las mismas restricciones. En 1947 todo el país concede a las mujeres voto en los niveles regionales, con plenos derechos que finalmente se concede en 1953.

Rock N Java Thai Noodle Bar to Move to New Location - Starting September 27th, Rock N Java Thai Noodle Bar will be closing their doors in order to move to their new location on the ground floor of Mega Commercial Mexicana. The move is expected to take a month, and when they re-open not only will they still serve the same great thai food, but they’ll also be adding sushi to the menu as well.  Best of all, the new location will also offer lunch!

Third Lionfish Tournament This Year – October 24th - The Third Lionfish tournament of the year is scheduled for October 24th at the Punta Langosta pier.  The marine park, “Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel,” who is sponsoring the event, has discovered these tournaments to be an effective way to help keep the lionfish population in check.   Over 25 thousand pesos will be awarded in prizes.  For more information on how to participate, contact the marine park at  987 872 2409.

El tercer torneo de pez león está programado para el 24 de octubre  en el muelle de Punta Langosta. El Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel, que patrocina el evento, ha descubierto estos torneos para ser un medio eficaz para ayudar a mantener el pez león con una población bajo control.
