Happy Safe Independence Day Cozumel!

September 16 is the most important national holiday observed in Mexico. The traditional "Grito de Dolores," and fireworks are scheduled to start at 10:30 pm on Thursday, September 15th, with a cultural festival, including traditional dances, starting at 7:00 pm. At 2:30 am "Banda Cozumel" comes on stage to perform. Both the Taxi Union and Uniper Cozumel, have announced extended hours and service in order to facilitate a safe holiday celebration for everyone. El 16 de Septiembre es la festividad nacional más importante de México. El tradicional “Grito de Dolores” y los fuegos artificiales comenzarán a las 10:30 p.m. el jueves 15 de septiembre con un festival cultural que incluye bailes tradicionales a partir de las 7 p.m. hasta las 2:30 a.m., y se presentará la “Banda Cozumel”. El Sindicato de Taxistas y la empresa Uniper Cozumel han comunicado que ampliarán su horario de servicio para facilitar a todos un festejo seguro. "La Iglesia de San Miguel" Prepares to Honor the Island's Patron Saint

The Archangel San Miguel is considered to be the patron saint of our island. Every year, starting on September 21st, processions to honor San Miguel start from the Iglesia de San Miguel, located downtown, which carries his name. Festivities run from the 21st – 29th, with the highlight of the celebration, the nautical parade taking place in front of the downtown pier. In this ceremony, local fisherman carry the image of San Miguel, so that he may bless and protect their boats, and Cozumel, from hurricanes. San Miguel has been considered the patron saint of Cozumel since 1848.

La Iglesia de San Miguel se prepara para rendir tributo al Santo Patrono de la Isla

El Arcángel San Miguel es considerado el Santo Patrono de nuestra Isla. Todos los años, a partir del 21 de septiembre, las procesiones en honor de San Miguel inician en la Iglesia que lleva su nombre y que se localiza en el centro de la ciudad. Las festividades se realizan del 21 al 29 de septiembre y como punto culminante de la celebración sigue el desfile náutico frente al muelle del Centro. En esta ceremonia los pescadores locales portan la imagen de San Miguel para que les bendiga, para que proteja sus embarcaciones y a Cozumel, de los huracanes. Desde el año de 1848, San Miguel ha sido considerado como santo patrono de Cozumel.

Cozumel Welcomes a New Port Captain

A warm, Island of Peace welcome to Captain Eduardo Meixueiro Mancisidor, who is now Cozumel's new port captain. Prior to arriving in Cozumel, Captain Meixueirro was Port Captain for Coatzacoalcos and also served in Veracruz as Regional Head of Navigation. Captain Meixueirro has already met with local members of ANOAT (Asociación Nacional de Operadores Acuáticos y Turísticos) to discuss strategies to implement during inclement weather to ensure a safe and uniformed operation.

Cozumel da la bienvenida al nuevo Capitán de Puerto

Una cálida Isla de la Paz da la bienvenida al Capitán Eduardo Meixueiro Mancisidor, el nuevo Capitán de Puerto de Cozumel. Antes de llegar a Cozumel, el Capitán Meixueiro era Capitán de Puerto en Coatzacoalcos y en Veracruz también prestó sus servicios como Jefe Regional de Navegación. El Capitán Meixueiro ya se ha reunido con los socios de ANOAT (Asociación Nacional de Operadores Acuáticos y Turísticos) con el objeto de analizar estrategias e implementarlas durante inclemencias meteorológicas y así garantizar una operación segura y uniforme.

New Flights into Cozumel with US Airways

Starting in October, US Airways will start a new flight directly into Cozumel from Charlotte, North Carolina. During the January high season, the air carrier expects to augment the arrivals to five per week. With an increase of just over 2,000 seats, flying directly into Cozumel should be easier, and more economical than ever!

Nuevos vuelos a Cozumel a través de US Airways

A partir del mes de octubre, la aerolínea US Airways ofrecerá vuelo directo a Cozumel desde Charlotte, Carolina del Norte. Durante la temporada alta del mes de enero la aerolínea espera que las llegadas se amplíen a cinco a la semana. ¡Con un aumento de más de 2,000 plazas de avión, volar directamente a Cozumel debe ser más económico que antes!

Humane Society Pets of the Week

HACHI - Hachi is 7 months old, healthy and spayed.  A beautiful miniature German Shepherd mix, who came to us on a memorable date: the 4th of July. Hachi is really a very good looking dog; her coat is so soft and her posture is elegant. She comes in an easy-to-handle size too (only 15 pounds), and she is also very well mannered.  This cutie had a home before, which she lost as the result of a divorce; neither part could take care of her. Too bad, as she would have made the perfect family dog. Please help us find a new family for Hachi!

DHARMA, the old toothless cat - This old girl was a street cat long ago and was taken in by a young diver who gave her a home. In 2006 he left the Island and Dharma went to live at Coffelia, that little restaurant many of us miss so much. She became part of Ofelia’s staff, taking her possition as chief of pest controll very seriously. She also became part of the family of course, sharing treats with Ofelia’s two little dogs Lola and Frida, both adopted from the shelter long before. Unfortunately Ofelia had to close the restaurant, and then left the Island to take care of her mom, leaving her animals in care of a friend. Upon her return, she found Dharma had such a horrible infection in her mouth that all her teeth had to be taken out. Ofelia needs to move back to Durango and will take the dogs with her, but cannot take a cat to her family home. She is hoping to find a good soul who will adopt old, sweet, calm, noble and toothless Dharma. She is such a good cat who will easily blend in a fairly quiet home. All she needs is love, and soft food!

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

HACHI - Hachi es una cachorra de 7 meses, sana y operada. Es una cruza de Pastor Alemán miniatura, que llegó con nosotros en la memorable fecha del 4 de Julio. Hachi es realmente una perra muy hermosa; su pelo es tan suave y tiene mucho porte. Tiene un tamaño muy manejable (7 kg) y además tiene muy buenos modales. Esta muñequita tuvo un hogar, que desafortunadamente perdió cuando sus dueños se divorciaron y ninguno de ellos podía quedarse con ella. Qué lástima, porque hubiera sido la perra familiar perfecta. Por favor, ayudanos a encontrar una nueva familia para Hachi.

DHARMA, la vieja gata molacha - Doña Dharma fue una gata de la calle en su juventud, y se regaló con un joven buzo que le dió hogar. En 2006, él se fue de la Isla y dejó a Dharma en Coffelia, ese restaurante que muchos extrañamos tanto. Se convirtió en parte del staff como jefa del departamento de control de roedores y cucarachas, y desempeñaba su chamba con seriedad. También era parte de la familia, claro, compartiendo el amor de Ofelia y los premios con Frida y Lola, las dos perritas que Ofelia había adoptado del refugio años atrás. Desafortunadamente, Ofelia tuvo que cerrar el restaurante y después salió de Cozumel para ir a cuidar a su mamá, dejando a sus animales encargados con una amiga. Al regresar, se encontró con que Dharma tenía una infección bucal tan terrible ¡que le tuvieron que sacar todos los dientes! Ofelia tiene que regresar a Durango y aunque se llevará a sus perras, no puede llegar con gata a la casa de la familia. Así que está buscando un alma buena que adopte a la viejita Dharma, tan dulce y tranquila; tan noble y chimuela. Es una gata sabia y adaptable que se incorporará muy bien a un hogar tranquilo. Todo lo que necesita es amor, y comida blanda.

Mexicans Who Made History: Victor Ochoa & Waldeen von Falkernstein

Now that Independence Month is upon us, and bicentennial celebrations are being planned, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the Mexicans who made history.

Victor Leaton Ochoa was a Mexican inventor and revolutionary, born in 1850 in Ojinaga, Mexico. Ochoa was the inventor of a windmill, magnetic brakes, a wrench, and a reversible motor. He is probably best known for the invention of the Ochoaplane, a small flying machine, with collapsible wings. Victor Ochoa was also a Mexican revolutionary. According to the Smithsonian, he had a price on his head of $50,000 dead or alive to Porfirio Diaz, then President of Mexico. Ochoa was a revolutionist who's political writings and activities sought to overthrow the rule of Mexico's chief executive in the early nineties. Waldeen von Falkenstein,  was a northamerican ballet dancer who was born in Dallas and  immigrated to Mexico in 1939. Waldeen joined the Japanese choreographer Seki Sano when he moved to Mexico. In 1939, she danced at theTeatro de Bellas Artes. She then went on to establish the Ballet de Bellas Artes, the ballet group of the theater, which she led until it was dissolved in 1947. She is also credited as the actual creator of the Mexican folkloric ballet, which was later refined by one of her students, the very famous Mexican dancer Amalia Hernandez, creator of the Ballet Folkclorico de Mexico.   She died in 1993 in Cuernavaca.   For more information, on Waldeen, check out this page.

Mexicanos que hicieron historia: Victor Ochoa & Waldeen von Falkernstein

Ahora que nos encontramos en el mes de la Independencia y que se planean las celebraciones del Bicentenario, consideramos que sería interesante conocer a algunos mexicanos que hicieron historia.

Víctor Leaton Ochoa fue un inventor y revolucionario mexicano nacido en el año 1850 en Ojinaga, México. Ochoa inventó un molino de viento, frenos magnéticos, una llave inglesa y un motor reversible. Es posible que sea más conocido por su “Ochoaplane”, una nave pequeña con alas plegables. De acuerdo con el Smithsonian, Porfirio Díaz, el entonces Presidente de México, puso precio a la cabeza de Ochoa: $50,000, vivo o muerto. Ochoa fue un revolucionario quien, principios de la década de 1890, a través de sus escritos y actividades políticas, pretendía derrocar al jefe del ejecutivo de México. Waldeen von Falkenstein, bailarina estadounidense nacida en la ciudad de Dallas que inmigró a México en el año 1939. Waldeen se unió al coreógrafo japonés Seki Sanocuando él se mudo a México. En el año 1939 Waldeen bailo en el Teatro de Bellas Artes y posteriormente formó y dirigió la Compañía del Ballet de Bellas Artes hasta que la compañía se disolvió en el año 1947. Es considerada la verdadera fundadora del ballet folclórico mexicano el cual, a la postre, fuera refinado por una de sus estudiantes: la famosa bailarina mexicana Amalia Hernandez, creadora del Ballet Folclórico Mexicano.   Waldeen falleció en la ciudad de Cuernavaca en el año 1993.   Para mayor información acerca de Waldeen, visiten la siguiente página.

The Cozumel International Film Festival Presents – “A Prophet” Wednesday, September 21, 2011 starting at 7 pm.   The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles, and is appropriate for mature adults.  It was nominated for a 2009 Academy Award.  The movie features 19 year old Malik as he rises to glory in a Corsican gang.  Admission is free.  The Case de la Cultura de Cozumel Ixchel is located on Av. The Humane Society of Cozumel is organizing an art auction to take place late in the fall of this year. We are asking artists to create one piece of animal related artwork to submit to the auction. The subject of the artwork should be dogs, cats, (or both), or the Humane Society itself. We are interested in new works made specifically for this event. The auction will be live, and all artwork will have a minimum starting bid of 50% of the retail value. The artist can donate the artwork, or can receive up to 65% of the price it fetches at the auction; the rest goes to the Humane Society. It is not necessary that the artwork be large and/or expensive. In this economy, it may be better to keep the size scaled down as to make selling the artwork easier. On the day of the event, there will be a vote by those attending for the public´s favorite artwork. The winner of the Public’s Choice Award will receive a dinner for two at La Cocay. Only one piece of artwork per artist, please. The organizing committee reserves the right to deny entry to the auction if it feels the artwork doesn’t meet the criteria, and also has the right to suggest a different price if it seems to be incorrectly valued. Works should be delivered to Galeria Azul no later than November 15, 2011. Galeria Azul is located on 15th avenue north between 8th and 10thstreets. La Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel convoca a los artistas a que participen en la subasta de arte que se llevará a cabo a fines de Noviembre o principios de Diciembre de 2011. Los interesados deberán crear una obra ex profeso para la subasta, teniendo como temas gatos y/o perros, o la Sociedad Humanitaria en sí. No se aceptarán obras que no hayan sido realizadas para este evento. La subasta será en vivo y todas las obras se lanzarán con el 50% de su valor como precio mínimo. El artista puede donar la obra o puede recibir hasta 65% del precio final con el que se haya vendido en la subasta. No es necesario que las obras sean grandes ni caras. Es recomendable hacer obras con precios más accesibles para que se vendan. Durante el evento, el público asistente eligirá por votación cuál es la mejor obra. El artista ganador recibirá como premio una cena para dos personas en el restaurante La Cocay. Los artistas sólo podrán participar con una obra. El comité organizador se reserva el derecho de no aceptar obras que no se apeguen a las bases de esta convocatoria, y también de sugerir un precio diferente en caso de que se considere que están valuadas de manera inadecuada. Las obras deben ser entregadas antes del 15 de Noviembre de 2011, y las recibiremos en Galería Azul, Av. 15 Norte Núm. 449, entre 8 y 10,  Col. Centro.
