Tropical Storm Karl Passes Over Cozumel

Wednesday, in the early morning hours, Tropical Storm Karl passed over Cozumel and the Yucatan Peninsula, bringing heavy rains and thunderstorms to the island.  The storm’s center passed over more southern areas of the Yucatan Peninsula such as Chetumal and Majahual.  In fact, Tropical Storm Karl had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph in the center with Cozumel catching only some of the storm’s outer bands.  Some Cozumel residents even reported sleeping through the entire storm.  Here’s hoping the rest of “Hurricane Season” goes by like a dream!

El miércoles, en la madrugada, la tormenta Tropical Karl pasó sobre Cozumel y la península de Yucatán, trayendo fuertes lluvias y tormentas eléctricas a la isla. El  Centro de la tormenta pasó por zonas más meridionales de la península de Yucatán como Chetumal y Majahual. De hecho, la tormenta tropical Karl tuvo vientos máximos sostenidos de 50 millas, en el centro de Cozumel  sólo se sintieron algunas de las ráfagas de la tormenta. Algunos residentes de Cozumel informaron que se  durmieron a través de toda la tormenta. Se  está esperando que el resto de la "Temporada de huracanes" se vea solo como un sueño.

Happy Independence Day Mexico!!

Happy Mexican Independence Day!  It was on this date, September 16, 1810, that Mexico gained independence from the Spanish colonial government.  As a result, schools, banks and government offices will be operating on a holiday schedule, in fact, schools are closed from the 15th until the 20th, and the island is expecting an increase in tourism for the “mega-puente” (Puente, being a 3 day weekend) To help celebrate Cozumel police have stepped up security efforts and contracted additional officers for the larger celebrations.   Events are planned throughout the month.  For a complete list of the Bicentennial Events, check out http://www.cozumel.gob.mx/programa.htm

Feliz día de la independencia mexicana! Fue en esta fecha, el 16 de septiembre de 1810, en la que México obtuvo la independencia del Gobierno colonial español. Como resultado, las escuelas, bancos y oficinas de gobierno funcionará en una programación de vacaciones, de hecho, las escuelas están cerradas desde el 15  hasta los 20, y en la isla se espera un aumento en el turismo para el "mega-puente" (Puente, siendo un fin de semana de 3 días) en ayuda para celebrar en Cozumel la policía ha intensificado los esfuerzos de seguridad y ha contratado oficiales adicionales para reforzar la seguridad en estas grandes celebraciones. Cozumel Restaurants Celebrate Independence Day

Cozumel has always been known for having some great restaurants.  Most of which are independently owned and each offer their own signature flavors.  In order to commemorate Independence Day, many of our local restaurants have gone all out.  For example, Guido’s Restaurant, which is known for their swiss-mexican seafood, will be celebrating with a special menú section from September 13 – 19th featuring aquachile de camaron, crepas de huitlacoche con salsa mornay, tostadas de langosta, cochnita pibil over home-made pasta, and chilies en nogada stuffed with duck confit.  Pepe’s Grill, which has been a Cozumel landmark since  1965, is also offering a special menu featuring an upscale twist on traditional Mexican favorites.  To view their menu, or make oceanview reservations, please check out their webpage.  La Cocay Restaurant will be hosting a bicentennial party on Friday Septtember 17, starting at 7:30 pm, for only a $40 peso cover charge, they’re featuring free tequila jello shots, $25 peso beers, $50 peso national drinks and, best of all, there will be a DJ, with dancing and a light show.  For more information, check out their facebook event page.  For current information on other restaurants, such as El Perro Verde, Rock N Java or Kinta Mexican Bistro, check out their pages.
Cozumel siempre ha sido conocido por tener algunos grandes restaurantes. La mayoría de los que son propiedad de forma independiente y cada uno de ellos ofrecen sus propios sabores con su firma especial. Con el fin de conmemorar el día de la independencia, muchos de nuestros restaurantes locales avientan la casa por la ventana. Por ejemplo, Guido's Restaurant, que es conocido por sus mariscos de swiss-mexicana, con una sección de menú especial desde el 13 de septiembre hasta el 19: con aquachile de camaron, crepas de huitlacoche con salsa mornay, tostadas de langosta, Cochinita Pibil sobre pasta casera, y chiles en Nogada rellenas de confit de pato. Pepe's Grill, que ha sido un hit de Cozumel desde 1965, también está ofreciendo un menú especial con un giro de lujo en comida mexicana tradicional. Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Waffles & Vera - by Monica Velasco

Waffles puppy appeared at somebody’s door one day last week. She might have ended up there by having adventured far from her mom or home, or placed there by someone. Waffles is about 7 weeks old and too young to be at the shelter so she is being fostered, being socialized among people, dogs, cats and a pelican. She is not too sure about this last one, but very curious. She has lots of energy and plays with everyone and everything until her little battery poops out and finally collapses into a deep sleep. She is the cutest thing! This little pancake will be a medium size dog, probably perfect for you.

La cachorrita Waffles apareció la semana pasada frente a la puerta de una casa. No se sabe si llegó ahí sola habiendose aventurado lejos de su mamá o de su dueño, o si alguien la depositó ahí. Waffles tiene unas 7 semanitas de edad, demasiado joven para estar con los cachorros del refugio. Así que está en casa puente, socializando entre humanos, perros, gatos y un pelícano. No está muy segura qué pensar acerca de éste último, pero le da muchísima curiosidad. Tiene mucha energía y juega con todos y todo, hasta que se le baja la pila y se colapsa en sueño profundo. ¡Es de lo más lindo! Este bombón va a tener un tamaño mediano, probablemente justo lo que estás buscando.

Isn’t this cat something? Well, she almost became nothing had she not been saved by a kind person who witnessed when someone not kind at all threw very hot liquid on her nursing mother to make her go away. The good people brought the mother and her two, one week old kittens to us. Mama, named Pele after the Hawaiian godess of fire,  had horrible burns on her back. Once recovered and with new patches of hair, Pele and her two babies flew to Vancouver to good homes.  Vera, the jumping cat, was one of those two babies.

¿Qué tal el brinco de esta gata? Bueno, pues si no fuera por la persona que la trajo al refugio junto con su mamá y su hermanita en Marzo pasado, no estaría brincando de gusto. Cuando tenía 1 semana de edad, a su mamá le echaron algún líquido hirviendo que le causó horribles quemaduras en la espalda. A pesar de eso, la gatita era muy dulce y bajo nuestros cuidados, crió a sus dos gatitas muy felíz. Ya recuperada y con parches de pelo nuevo en la espalda, madre he hijas fueron recibidas en Vancouver, donde cada quien tiene una nueva familia. La gatita brincadora en la foto es una de las dos bebés.

Giant Mexican Volcanic Telescope Almost Operational

The world’s largest telescope operating in millimeter waves, located in Mexico, is expected to begin research operations by the end of this year.  The telescope, which is located atop an extinct volcano, Sierra Negra, located in the central state of Puebla, sits at an altitude of 4850 meters above sea level.  The telescope cost 115 million dollars and took over 12 years to construct.  Amongst the plans for the new telescope, the study of the atmospheres of other planets in search of life:  “As worlds, we’re not alone,” said researcher Miguel Chavez.  For more information, check out this article.

El telescopio más grande del mundo que operan en ondas de milimétricas localizado en México, se espera que  comience sus operaciones de investigación a finales de este año. El telescopio, que se encuentra encima de un volcán extinto, Sierra Negra, ubicado en el Estado central de Puebla, se encuentra a una altitud de 4850 metros sobre el nivel del mar. El telescopio costo de 115 millones de dólares y tomó más de 12 años para su construcción. Entre los planes para el nuevo telescopio, es el estudio de las atmósferas de otros planetas en busca de vida: "En los mundos, no estamos solos," dijo el investigador Miguel Chávez. Mexicans Who Made History: A Quick Series to Celebrate Independence Month

Now that Independence Month is upon us, and bicentennial celebrations are planned and ready, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the Mexicans who made history. 

Pancho Villa was born in 1876 in Durango. His real name was Doroteo Arango, but he adopted the name, when his dearest friend, Pancho Villa, was murdered, and vowed to make people remember his name forever.   At the age of 16 Pancho Villa killed a government employee after the employee raped his sister.  Pancho Villa deeply believed in worker’s rights and relief from the suffering and oppression of extreme poverty for many of the Mexican people. Pancho Villa was a fugitive from Federal troops for 22 years, while he seized land and redistributed it to the peasants and the soldiers, Villa was a farmer, a soldier and an excellent horseman. He also was a cattle rustler, murderer and rebel. He did not drink liquor, and he swam and ran to keep in shape.  Villa gave up revolutionary life in 1920 to live on his farm, however, enjoyed only a short retirement since he was gunned down in 1923

Ahora que  es el mes de la independencia y empiezan las celebraciones del Bicentenario que están planificadas y listas, hemos pensado que sería interesante echar un vistazo a algunos de los mexicanos que hicieron historia.

Pancho Villa nació en 1876 en Durango. Su verdadero nombre era Doroteo Arango, pero adoptó el nombre, cuando su querido amigo, Pancho Villa, fue asesinado y prometió hacer que la gente recuerde su nombre para siempre. A la edad de 16 años Pancho Villa mato a un empleado del Gobierno después de que el empleado violo a su hermana. Pancho Villa  creía profundamente en los derechos del trabajador y ayudar de la opresión  de la extrema pobreza para muchos del pueblo mexicano en ayuda para su sufrimiento. Pancho Villa fue un fugitivo de las tropas federales durante 22 años, mientras él tomaba tierra y regresaba  a los campesinos y a los soldados, Villa fue un agricultor, un soldado y un excelente jinete. También fue una corresponsal de ganado, asesino y rebelde. Él no tomaba licor, él nadaba y corría para mantener en forma. Villa tuvo una vida revolucionaria hasta 1920 donde se retiro para vivir en su granja, sin embargo, disfrutó de  una jubilación corta ya que fue baleado en 1923.

Cozumel Global Warming Symposium, September 28th - Fundacion Plan Estrategica de Isla Cozumel, is the sponsoring organization behind an upcoming symposium at the Univeristy of Quintana Roo.  The goal of the symposium is to send Cozumel’s message to the Global Climate Change Conference in Cancun at the end of the year.  The symposium is scheduled for September 29th, starting at 8:30 am, with the breakout sessions beginning around 11 am.  For more information, contact, Osc Cozumel osc.cozumel@yahoo.com
