"Cruz Roja Cerca de Ti" Pilot Program to Start in October

The Cruz Roja Cozumel has plans to implement a new public health program entitled "Cruz Roja Cerca de Ti." While Cruz Roja ambulances are parked in strategic locations, awaiting an emergency, paramedics will be offering the public-at-large free health checks, consisting of blood pressure checks, blood sugar levels and even cholesterol testing. The program is scheduled to start in the beginning of October, with Cozumel acting as the pilot city for the program, which, if deemed successful will go to the state and then the national level. Cruz Roja representatives are hopeful that easy access to free-testing will implant good health practices in the general population, and further reduce the need for emergency medical attention.

La Cruz Roja de Cozumel tiene planes de implementar un nuevo programa para la salud pública que lleva por nombre "Cruz Roja Cerca de Ti". Cuando las ambulancias de la Cruz Roja se encuentren estacionadas en ubicaciones estratégicas esperando una emergencia, los paramédicos ofrecerán al público controles de salud gratuitos que consisten en análisis de presión arterial, niveles de azúcar y hasta pruebas de colesterol. Se prevé que el programa inicie a principios del mes de octubre con Cozumel, actuando como ciudad piloto del programa, y, de tener éxito, se aplicará a nivel estatal y posteriormente a nivel nacional. Los representantes de Cruz Roja tienen la esperanza de que el acceso fácil a estos análisis gratuitos inculquen a la población buenas prácticas de salud y más adelante se llegue a reducir la necesidad de la atención médica de emergencia.

International Tourism Day Celebration Planned

In honor of World-wide Tourism Day, which takes place on September 27th, Cozumel will be rolling out the red carpet with a series of activities, scheduled for the 27th – 28th to take place at the "Parque Benito Juarez," located downtown.

September 28th Will Have 12 Hours of Daylight & 12 Hours of Night

September 23rd, marks the September, or Autumn, Equinox. This is when the earth's axis is perpendicular to the line connecting the center of the earth to the sun. Mayan-Astro Academics from the Technological Institute in Merida (ITM) are reporting that on September 28th, 5 days later, our region of the country will be located directly at the subsolar point. That means that September 28th will have almost exactly 12 hours of daylight, and 12 hours of night here in Cozumel. For many people, especially those interested in the Mayan calendar, this marks the beginning of a time for purification and regeneration of energy. El 28 de septiembre, un día con 12 horas de luz y 12 horas de obscuridad

El día 23 de septiembre marca el equinoccio de septiembre o de otoño. Esto ocurre cuando el eje de la tierra es perpendicular a la línea que conecta el centro de la tierra con el sol. Catedráticos Maya-Astro del Instituto Tecnológico en Mérida (ITM) informan que el día 28 de septiembre, 5 días después del equinoccio, nuestra región del país se encontrará ubicada directamente en el punto subsolar. Esto significa que el 28 de septiembre tendrá casi exactamente 12 horas de luz de día y 12 horas de noche aquí en Cozumel. Para mucha gente, especialmente interesada en el calendario maya, esto marca el principio del tiempo para una purificación y regeneración de energía. Humane Society Pets of the Week

RICKY - Ricky is a large, white dog, probably a Labrador mix. He lived for the past year in a tight home-made dog house, built of a wooden frame with black cardboard sides and roof. He was chained inside that box, which was also covered with a black curtain. He lived in the dark.

When we went to rescue him, we fully expected to find a negligent and probably rude owner, given the cruelty we were were seeing. But it wasn’t the case. Ricky was a loved dog, and they kept him in that box to protect him. They had Ricky since he was a little puppy, and the first 5 years of his life he was lose at their door, roaming around the neighborhood, just like their children and the other neighborhood dogs did. The dog though, bothered the neighbors; Ricky defecated in the street, joined dog gangs, tore garbage bags, etc. Of course Ricky was not the only dog making the mess, but he might have been more noticeable given his size and pure white color. I’m sure the size of his poops pointed at him too.

Whether Ricky’s owners tried to put a solution to this or not, we don’t know. But one day, Ricky came home hurt, and with a rope tied around his penis. They were scared, sad and concerned, but had no money and no idea of what to do. So, they decided to keep him close by, and protect him from the people who wanted to hurt him. And they built him the box in which he remained prisoner, until a month ago.

By the time we knew about Ricky and went to rescue him, he was extremely thin. His platelets extremely low from Erlichiosis, and his penis bleeding from more venereal tumors than we have ever seen in one single dog.
This was a case of cruelty due to ignorance and poverty. They did what they thought was best and within their budget. The family’s home is no different than Ricky’s, only bigger.

After a long conversation they agreed that it was best for Ricky to come with us. When they let him out of his dog-house and walked him to the IFAW truck, he was so excited! Both mom and dad came with him to the shelter and authorized us to take charge of him. We have had him for 5 weeks now and Ricky is getting so much better. He required three surgeries to remove tumours and restore his very damaged penis, plus the following –and expensive- chemotherapy. He has put on a few pounds and is a happy dog, on the road to full recovery.

We need to work on his social skills with dogs, but Ricky LOVES people! I can hear his tail wagging when I approach his kennel. Soon he will be ready for adoption. We are hoping he will be taken for walks, swims, and enjoy the company of people who will love him.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

RICKY - Ricky es un perro grande y blanco, probablemente cruza de Labrador. Durante el último año, vivió en una perrera de construcción casera, hecha de palos y lámina de cartón. Estaba encadenado adentro de ese cajón, el cual estaba además cubierto con una cortina negra. Vivía en la oscuridad.

Cuando acudimos a verlo después de haber recibido un reporte, esperabamos encontrarnos con un dueño negligente y grosero, dada la manera como encontramos al perro. Pero no fue así. Ricky era un perro querido, a quien mantenían en ese cajón para protegerlo. Lo habían tenido desde que era un cachorrito y los primeros 5 años de su vida los pasó como otros perros de la cuadra, afuera del domicilio y andando por el vecindario. Los niños hacían igual. Pero el perro causaba molestia a los vecinos; defecaba en la calle, se unía a las bandas de perros, rompía bolsas de basura, etc. Claro que Ricky no era el único perro haciendo fechorías, pero tal vez era más notorio dado su tamaño y su color totalmente blanco. Seguramente también el tamaño de sus deposiciones lo incriminaban.

No sabemos si los dueños de Ricky trataron de hacer algo para resolver esa situación. Pero un día, hace al menos un año, Ricky regresó a casa lastimado y con una cuerda amarrada a su pene. Sus dueños se espantaron, se preocuparon, pero no tenían idea de qué hacer y tampoco dinero. Así que resolvieron mantenerlo cerca, para protegerlo de quien lo quisiera lastimar. Y le construyeron el cajón en el que vivió prisionero hasta hace un mes.

Este fue un caso de crueldad causada por ignorancia y pobreza. Hicieron lo que pensaron que era mejor dentro de sus posibilidades. La casa de la familia está hecha de los mismos materiales que la de Ricky, solo es más grande.

Después de conversar, los dueños de Ricky comprendieron que era mejor que el perro viniera con nosotros. Cuando lo sacaron de su perrera y lo llevaron hacia la camioneta de IFAW, ¡el perro iba felíz! Tanto el papá como la mamá acompañaron a Ricky hasta el refugio y nos autorizaron hacernos cargo de él. Lo hemos tenido por 5 semanas y está mucho mejor. Se requirieron tres cirugías para quitar los tumores y restaurar su pene tan dañado. Y además, la subsecuente –y costosa- quimioterapia. Ricky ya subió algunos kilos y es un perro felíz, en proceso de recuperación.

Necesitamos trabajar en su trato con otros perros, pero la gente ¡le encanta! Oigo su rabo golpear contra la pared o el piso cuando me voy acercando a su jaula. Pronto estará listo para ser adoptado. Esperamos que lo lleven a pasear, a nadar, y que disfrute la compañia de gente que lo ame.

Mexicans Who Made History: Dolores Olmedo & Andres Quintana Roo

Now that Independence Month is upon us, and bicentennial celebrations are being planned, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the Mexicans who made history.

María de los Dolores Olmedo y Patiño Suárez was born in the Tacubaya district of Mexico City, on December 14, 1908, She met painter Diego Rivera in 1928, while the when was working on the murals in the Ministry of Public Education, and she became one of his models. She married British Howard Phillips, founder of Mexican Life, a national English language newspaper, covering mostly arts and politics, and together they had 4 children. Dolores, or Lola as she was called, was surrounded by the great literary, artistic and political minds of the day. After the death of Frida Kahlo, Lola resumed her friendship with Diego Rivera, and though him, she began to amass her art collection. When Rivera died, as per his instructions, she oversaw both the Fida Kahlo blue house in Coyoacan and the Diego Rivera-Anahuacalli. On September 17, 1994, Lola opened her home, a restored 16th century hacienda "La Noria" in Xochimilco, as the Dolores Olmedo Museum. She donated her entire collection of art including pre-Hispanic, colonial, folk, modern and contemporary art to the museum, as a result, the Dolores Olmedo Patiño Museum hosts the greatest collection of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera art in the world . Her museum Doña Lola died on Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the age of 93. For more information on Dolores Olmedo, check out this webpage.

Andres Quintana Roo was born in Merida, Yucatan on November 30, 1787. He studied in theSeminario de San Idelfonso de Mérida, and eventually moved to Mexico City, where he completed his studies to become a lawyer. Andres Quintana Roo became one of the most influential men during the War of Independence. After the war, he was a member of the Constitutional Assembly, thus he actually had a hand in creating the Mexican Declaration of Independence in 1813. He also served Mexico as a Legislator, Senator, Secretary of State and the Supreme Court. His father, José Matías Quintana , established the first printing press which printed the first newspapers on the Yucatán Peninsula. Andres Quintana Roo followed in his footsteps by also serving as editor and Manager ofSemanario Patriótico (Weekly Patriotic). He died on April 15, 1851 in Mexico City. His remains lie next to those of his wife, Leona, in the mausoleum of the Column of Independence in Mexico City. The state of Quintana Roo was named after him. Mexicanos que hicieron historia: Dolores Olmedo y Andrés Quintana Roo

Ahora que nos encontramos en el mes de la Independencia y que se planean las celebraciones del Bicentenario, consideramos que sería interesante conocer a algunos mexicanos que hicieron historia.

María de los Dolores Olmedo y Patiño Suárez nació en Tacubaya en la Ciudad de México el 14 de diciembre del año 1908. Durante la época en la cual el pintor Diego Rivera realizaba los murales que se encuentran en la Secretaría de Educación Pública, en el año 1928, Dolores fue una de sus modelos. Dolores contrajo matrimonio con el inglés Howard Phillips, fundador de Mexican Life, un periódico nacional en idioma inglés que en gran parte abarcaba las artes y la política. Tuvieron 4 hijos. Dolores, o Lola, estaba rodeada de grandes mentes literarias, artísticas y políticas de la época. Después del fallecimiento de Frida Kahlo, Lola reanudó su amistad con Diego Rivera y, a través de él, comenzó a acumular su colección de arte. Cuando murió Rivera, de acuerdo a sus instrucciones, ella supervisó tanto la Casa Azul en Coyoacán como el Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli. El 17 de septiembre del año 1994, Lola abrió su casa en Xochimilco conocida como "La Noria", una hacienda restaurada del Siglo 16, convirtiéndola en el "Museo de Dolores Olmedo". Lola donó al museo toda su colección de arte, incluyendo el pre-hispánico, el colonial, arte popular, moderno y contemporáneo; como resultado, el Museo de Dolores Olmedo Patiño posee la colección más grande en el mundo de Frida Kahlo y de Diego Rivera. Doña Lola murió el día sábado 27 de julio del año 2002 a la edad de 93 años. Para mayor información.

Andrés Quintana Roo nació en la ciudad de Mérida, Yucatán el 30 de noviembre del año 1787. Estudió en el Seminario de San Idelfonso de Mérida y eventualmente se mudó a la Ciudad de México donde terminó sus estudios para convertirse en abogado. Andrés Quintana Roo llegó a ser uno de los hombres más influyentes durante la Guerra de la Independencia. Después de la guerra, fue miembro de la Asamblea Constitucional por lo que, en consecuencia, en el año 1813 intervino en la creación  de la Declaración de la Independencia de México. También prestó sus servicios en México como Legislador, Senador, Secretario de Estado y de la Suprema Corte de Justicia. Su padre, José Matías Quintana, fundó la primera imprenta a través de la cual se publicaron los primeros periódicos de la Península de Yucatán. Andrés Quintan Roo, y siguió los pasos de su padre también como editor y gerente del Semanario Patriótico. Falleció en la Ciudad de México el 15 de abril del año 1851. Sus restos reposan cerca de los de su esposa Leona en el mausoleo de la Columna de la Independencia en la Ciudad de México. El Estado de Quintana Roo lleva su nombre.
