Cozumel Dives into Independence Day Celebrations

Festivities celebrating Mexican Independence have already started, the official ambassador to the celebrations, Nadia Alonso Martin, has already been crowned, and the downtown malecon has already been decorated! This month will be packed with artistic, historical and sporting events to mark the occasion. One of the largest events will take place in front of the Palacio Municipal on the evening of September 15. The program includes folkloric shows, traditional music, local restaurants serving food and drinks, and of course, the "Grito de Dolores," lead by the Presidential Balcony, followed by fireworks. Other events during the month include a bicycle race, a bodybuilding competition, historical reenactments and a concert by the Cozumel Band. Cozumel sumergido en las celebraciones del Día de la Independencia

Han comenzado las festividades para la celebración de la Independencia Mexicana. La embajadora oficial de las celebraciones, Nadia Alonso Martín, ya fue coronada y en el centro ya se ha decorado el malecón. Para celebrar la ocasión, este mes estará lleno de eventos artísticos, históricos y deportivos. Uno de los mayores eventos se llevará a cabo la noche del 15 de septiembre frente al Palacio Municipal. El programa incluye espectáculos folklóricos, música tradicional, restaurantes locales sirviendo comidas y bebidas y, desde luego, el “Grito de Dolores”, dirigido desde el balcón Presidencial, seguido de fuegos pirotécnicos. Otros eventos a efectuarse durante el mes incluyen carrera en bicicletas, competencia de fisicoculturismo, representaciones históricas y un concierto ofrecido por la Banda de Cozumel. Safe in September: Public Safety Intensified

Aurelio Joaquín González, Mayor of Cozumel has announced the acquisition of new breathalyzers, which will be used by public safety officials to detect individuals driving under the influence of alcohol. The breathalyzers will be used in a series of road checks during the month of September to ensure a safer Patriot month for island residents and visitors alike. Celebrate Safely!

Seguridad en Septiembre: se intensifica la seguridad pública

El Alcalde de Cozumel, Aurelio Joaquín González, anunció la adquisición de nuevos alcoholímetros que serán utilizados por seguridad pública para detectar personas que manejen bajo la influencia del alcohol. Los alcoholímetros serán utilizados el diferentes retenes durante el mes de septiembre con el objeto de hacer de la Isla un lugar seguro este mes de la Patria tanto para los habitantes como para los visitantes. ¡Celebren con seguridad!

2,500 Participants Confirmed for the Cozumel Ironman

Cozumel's Ironman competition, scheduled to take place in November, has 2,500 confirmed participants. This is the third year of the event, and it's been sold out each time. In addition to the influx of athletes, it's been estimated that each competitor arrives with 4 or 5 family members or friends to cheer them onto glory, creating a festive atmosphere for everyone. Se ha confirmado la asistencia de 2,500 participantes en Ironman Cozumel

La competencia Ironman Cozumel programada para el próximo mes de noviembre ya cuenta con la confirmación de 2,500 participantes. Este es el tercer año en que se lleva a cabo el evento, y cada año el cupo se ha agotado. Además de la afluencia de los atletas, se estima que cada competidor llegará con 4 ó 5 miembros de su familia, o con amigos que los alentaran para lograr la gloria, creando así una atmósfera festiva para todos. Top Mexican Tennis Players Host Exhibition in Cozumel

This weekend Cozumel will host the best tennis players in the country, during the first annual "Copa Allegro Cozumel." The event will take place at the Unidad Deportivo Bicentenario. In addition, there will be a tournament with the prizes including, 3 days/2 night all-inclusive in Xcaret, trophies and more! Esta semana la Isla de Cozumel será anfitriona de los 20 mejores jugadores de tenis en el país en la primera copa anual “Copa Allegro Cozumel”. El evento se llevará a cabo en la Unidad Deportiva Bicentenario. Además, habrá un torneo con premios que incluyen 3 días/2 noches con todo incluido en Xcaret, ¡trofeos y más! Humane Society Pets of the Week

Chiquis is a 7 year old Rottweiller female who gained a lot of notoriety last month in Facebook, with intense comments from many people concerned for her safety and health. She has a home and a nice big yard mostly to herself, but was not well cared for. She was not totally neglected –she had her basic needs covered (water, food, freedom to move about and shade)- but she needed medical attention and she was not getting it. And if she hadn’t received it, she probably would be dying now. The reports saved her.
We received a first report about this dog in March, from Mexico City. Somebody had seen this dog was very skinny and was tied up. I went to check on her and she was definitely skinny and indeed tethered the first time I saw her, but the next two times she was pleasantly resting on the grass under a tree, free to wander around the large grass covered area next to the Corpus Christy Church building. When I spoke to someone from the church, he said they didn’t understand why she was so skinny because she was fed twice a day, and she did eat her food. I suggested they take her to a veterinarian to have her blood tested and mentioned the possibility that either heart-worm and/or Erlichiosis could be the cause for her being underweight. I gave him our contact information and offered to help if needed, and left somewhat confident that the people in charge would take the advice and have the dog checked by whoever their veterinarian was. And I am sure they wished they had, after the huge scandal that came about later on. Some say that the Bishop called asking what was going on.
In August, soon after we received a second report about this beautiful Rottweiller from the church whose ribs and hip bones were sticking out and was urinating blood, the news somehow exploded in Facebook and people from many places developed great concern for her. The power of photographs, personal perceptions and gossip made people reach far-fetched conclusions which caused this case to be blown out of proportion, resulting in insults and aggressions which would have not helped to get the dog better. That was where our focus needed to remain: helping the dog.
To be able to help Chiquis –which was what everyone wanted- we made our best efforts to smooth things out and gain cooperation from the church administration. In August 15th we picked her up with their consent, and took her to the shelter to receive the medical attention she definitely needed. No wonder she was underweight; she had heart-worm, Erlichiosis and a severe urinary tract infection. We treated her for the last two, and will wait until she has gained some more weight to proceed with the heart-worm treatment.
Three weeks later, the official secretary of the church called us asking about the dog. She had just come back from a long vacation and missed the whole thing. We had several conversations with her and she showed concern for the dog, making the commitment to pay more attention to her care. So, we took Chiquis back last Saturday, September 3rd. When we got there, we wanted to see where she would find shelter from the rain and we didn’t like what we found. It was sort of a hole, like a dungeon under the building.  Probably a dog would find it acceptable protection from the rain, but it was not good enough for us as it was full of mosquitoes! We would not leave her unless they provided her with better shelter, and negotiated to sell them a large wooden dog house which had just been offered to us. This was set near the garden, the secretary had a blanket put in it, and Chiquis seemed to like it.
Chiquis is not one person’s or one family’s dog; she is the church dog. Clearly, taking care of her was not a priority to anyone there. However, she was not being starved to death as it was claimed in the web. They made the mistake, a serious one, of not taking her to a vet when they saw that she was losing weight inexplicably, but Chiquis was not an abused dog and we think this was a lesson to those who made the mistakes. The possibility of finding another home for Chiquis was offered, but they did want her back and commited to taking good care of her. Our job as Humane Society is to try to make this difference; not just to rescue animals and take them away from bad owners to place them in great homes. This would not only limit us to helping very few animals, but would also leave those people who erred in exactly the same position -or worse- for the next time they end up with another dog. No lessons learned, no information shared, no feed back. And nothing will stop bad owners from getting another dog and repeat the story all over again.
Chiquis was happy to be back in her territory and her people greeted her well. We will monitor her and will continue with her treatment. Hopefully we will have a picture of a healthy Rottie for you next month.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Chiquis es una hembra Rottweiller cuyo caso fue intensamente comentado en facebook y en las noticias. Muchos estaban  preocupados por su seguridad y su salud. La perrita tiene casa y vive en un jardín enorme, pero no estaba bien cuidada. Sin embargo, tampoco estaba en completo abandono. Tenía agua, alimento, libertad de movimiento y protección de la lluvia; pero necesitaba atención médica y no se la estaban dando. Y si no se le hubiera dado, probablemente se estaría muriendo ahora. Los reportes la salvaron.
El primer reporte que recibimos acerca de esta perra fue en Marzo, desde el DF. Alguien había visto que estaba muy flaca y que la tenían amarrada. La fui a checar y efectivamente la primera vez estaba muy baja de peso y amarrada con un cable . Pero las siguientes veces que fui estaba descansando plácidamente en el pasto, libre de andar por el gran jardín adyacente al edificio de la Iglesia de Corpus Christi. Cuando logré hablar con alguien de la Iglesia, la persona me dijo que no entendían por qué la perra estaba tan flaca si le daban de comer dos veces al día, y ella sí comía lo que le daban. Le sugerí que deberían llevarla al veterinario y hacerle pruebas de sangre, y mencioné la posibilidad de que tal vez tenía gusano del corazón y/o erlichiosis, y eso fuera la causa de su flacura. Le dí nuestros datos y ofrecí ayuda si la requerían, y me retiré con cierta confianza de que los encargados harían checar a la perra con su médico. Después del escándalo que se desató después, estoy segura de que desearían haberlo hecho. Segun dicen algunos, hasta el Obispo llamó a preguntar qué estaba pasando.
En Agosto pasado, poco después de que recibimos el segundo reporte acerca de esta hermosa Rottweiller de la Iglesia, con las costillas y los huesos de la cadera marcados y que orinaba sangre, la noticia explotó en facebook y muchas personas de diferentes partes se preocuparon muchísimo por Chiquis. El poder de las fotos, las percepciones personales y los chismes, hicieron que muchos llegaran a conclusiones exageradas que resultaron en agresiones e insultos, lo cual no ayudó. Nuestra atención debía enfocarse en ayudar a la perra.
Para poder darle a Chiquis la atención médica que necesitaba -que es lo que todos queríamos-, hicimos nuestro mejor esfuerzo por apaciguar la situación y lograr la cooperación de la administración de la parroquia. El 15 de Agosto fuimos a buscar a Chiquis, y con el consentimiento de la iglesia la llevamos al regufio para darle la atención médica que tanto necesitaba. Al revisarla y hacerle análisis se encontró la razón de su flacura: tenía gusano de corazón, erlichiosis y una severa infección urinaria. Se le dió tratamiento para las dos últimas, y esperaremos a que suba un poco más de peso para proceder con el de gusano de corazón.
Tres semanas más tarde, la secretaria oficial de la iglesia nos llamó preguntando por la perra. Acababa de regresar de vacaciones y se perdió todo el tremendo escándalo. Tuvimos varias conversaciones con ella y mostró interés en la perra, comprometiendose a poner más atención en su cuidado. Así que el Sábado pasado, tres de Septiembre, llevamos a la Chiquis de regreso a la Iglesia. Al llegar quisimos verificar donde se podría proteger de la lluvia y lo que vimos no nos gustó. Era como una cueva debajo del edificio. Posiblemente un perro lo encontraría aceptable, pero  nosotros no; estaba lleno de mosquitos! No la dejaríamos a menos que le proporcionaran algo mejor, y negociamos venderles una casa de madera que nos había sido ofrecida. Se le acomodó en el jardín y la secretaria mandó traer una colchoneta. A Chiquis pareció gustarle.

Chiquis no es la perra de una persona o una familia; es la perra de esta iglesia. Evidentemente, el cuidado de la perra no era la prioridad de nadie ahí, sin embargo, no la estaban matando de hambre como se dijeron los rumores en la red. Cometieron el serio error de no llevarla al veterinario cuando vieron que la perra perdía peso inexplicablemente, pero no era una perra maltratada o que sufriera de abusos, y creemos que esto sirvió de lección para los que cometieron los errores. La posibilidad de encontrarle otro hogar les fue ofrecida, pero ellos quieren a la perra de regreso y se comprometieron a darle buen cuidado. Nuestra labor como Sociedad Humanitaria es intentar lograr ese cambio, no solo recatar animales de dueños inadecuados y colocarlos en hogares maravillosos. Esto no solo nos limitaría a ayudar a muy pocos animales, sino que además dejaríamos a los dueños malos o inadecuados en la misma situación de ignorancia y actitud errónea para la siguiente vez que se hicieran de otro perro. Y no hay nada que prevenga que esos malos dueños adquieran otro perro, y se repita la historia una y otra vez.
Chiquis se vió contenta de regresar a su territorio y su gente la recibió bien. Continuaremos monitoreando y daremos seguimiento a su tratamiento. Esperamos tener la foto de una Rottie completamente sana para el mes que entra.

Mexicans Who Made History: Alma Reed & Felipe Carillo Puerto

Now that Independence Month is upon us, and bicentennial celebrations are being planned, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the Mexicans who made history. Alma Reed was a northamerican journalist who fell in love with the Governor of the State of Yucatan, Felipe Carillo Puerto. Their story is considered to be one of the great Mexican love stories. Rumored to be a descendant of Nachi CoCom, Felipe Carillo campaigned for suffrage, land reform and the rights of the indigenous Mayan people.. Alma Reed, also an advocate of worker's rights, travelled to Mexico in the 1920's, where she met the Governor, and fell in love at first sight. The pair traveled throughout the Yucatan Peninsula together, where Reed wrote a series of articles condemning the Harvard University Peabody Museum for the theft of Mayan artifacts. The articles lead the museum to even return some of the objects. The couple became engaged, however, it was during a period of great civil unrest. During an uprising, Felipe Carillo Puerto was executed, and they were never able to marry. One of Carillo Puerto's wedding gifts to Alma Reed survives to this day, in the form of a song, "La Peregrina," based on their love. Reed never married, and continued her deep connection with Mexico, and was awarded the Aztec Eagle for her efforts. She died in Mexico City in 1966. For their complete story, check out this page.

Mexicanos que hicieron historia: Alma Reed y Felipe Carrillo Puerto

Ahora que nos encontramos en el mes de la Independencia y que se planean las celebraciones del Bicentenario, consideramos que sería interesante conocer a algunos mexicanos que hicieron historia.
Alma Reed fue una periodista estadounidense que se enamoró del Gobernador del Estado de Yucatán, Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Su historia está considerada como una de las más grandes historias de amor en México. Los rumores mencionaban que Felipe Carrillo Puerto era descendiente de Nachi CoCom. Felipe Carrillo Puerto se dedicó a hacer campaña por el sufragio, la reforma agraria y los derechos de las comunidades indígenas mayas. Alma Reed, defensora también de los derechos de los trabajadores, viajó a México en el año de 1920, y durante ese tiempo conoció al Gobernador y se enamoró de él a primera vista. La pareja viajó por la Península de Yucatán, donde Reed escribió una serie de artículos condenando al Museo Peabody de la Universidad de Harvard por el robo de piezas mayas. Sus artículos hicieron posible que el museo devolviera algunas de las piezas. La pareja se comprometió, sin embargo, esto ocurrió durante un período de gran conmoción social. Felipe Carrillo Puerto fue ejecutado durante un levantamiento, por lo que nunca les fue posible contraer matrimoinio. Uno de los regalos de bodas de Carrillo Puerto a Alma Reed sobrevive hasta nuestros días a través de una canción basada en su amor:"La Peregrina," Reed nunca se casó pero su profunda conexión con México perduró. Fue galardonada con el Águila Azteca por sus esfuerzos. Reed falleció en la Ciudad de México en el año 1966. Para leer la historia completa ingresen aquí.

The Humane Society of Cozumel is organizing an art auction to take place late in the fall of this year. We are asking artists to create one piece of animal related artwork to submit to the auction. The subject of the artwork should be dogs, cats, (or both), or the Humane Society itself. We are interested in new works made specifically for this event. The auction will be live, and all artwork will have a minimum starting bid of 50% of the retail value. The artist can donate the artwork, or can receive up to 65% of the price it fetches at the auction; the rest goes to the Humane Society. It is not necessary that the artwork be large and/or expensive. In this economy, it may be better to keep the size scaled down as to make selling the artwork easier. On the day of the event, there will be a vote by those attending for the public´s favorite artwork. The winner of the Public’s Choice Award will receive a dinner for two at La Cocay. Only one piece of artwork per artist, please. The organizing committee reserves the right to deny entry to the auction if it feels the artwork doesn’t meet the criteria, and also has the right to suggest a different price if it seems to be incorrectly valued. Works should be delivered to Galeria Azul no later than November 15, 2011. Galeria Azul is located on 15th avenue north between 8th and 10thstreets. La Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel convoca a los artistas a que participen en la subasta de arte que se llevará a cabo a fines de Noviembre o principios de Diciembre de 2011. Los interesados deberán crear una obra ex profeso para la subasta, teniendo como temas gatos y/o perros, o la Sociedad Humanitaria en sí. No se aceptarán obras que no hayan sido realizadas para este evento. La subasta será en vivo y todas las obras se lanzarán con el 50% de su valor como precio mínimo. El artista puede donar la obra o puede recibir hasta 65% del precio final con el que se haya vendido en la subasta. No es necesario que las obras sean grandes ni caras. Es recomendable hacer obras con precios más accesibles para que se vendan. Durante el evento, el público asistente eligirá por votación cuál es la mejor obra. El artista ganador recibirá como premio una cena para dos personas en el restaurante La Cocay. Los artistas sólo podrán participar con una obra. El comité organizador se reserva el derecho de no aceptar obras que no se apeguen a las bases de esta convocatoria, y también de sugerir un precio diferente en caso de que se considere que están valuadas de manera inadecuada.
