Underground Cable Project Completed

Last weekend marked the removal of the very last of the electrical poles on Av. Rafael Melgar, Cozumel’s waterfront street    All electrical cables are now located underground. 

This is the very last component of the modernization of the downtown area, which started a few years ago.  Residents and visitors alike will now have an unencumbered ocean view while enjoying the waterfront.    

El fin de la semana pasada marcó la extracción del ultimo poste eléctrico en la avenida Melgar en el malecón de Cozumel. Todos los cables eléctricos son subterráneos ahora.

Este es el último componente de la modernización del área del centro, la cual empezó hace unos años. Ahora residentes y visitantes por igual tienen una vista sin obstáculos mientras disfrutan el malecón.

Museum to Host Course on Making Artisanal Soaps

The Fundacion de Parques y Museos de Cozumel has announced that this upcoming Tuesday, September 15th, and Thursday September 17th, they will be hosting a course on creating your own artisanal soaps. 

Learn how to fabricate your own homemade soap, at home, easily and economically. Topics include, the history of soap fabrication, the different types of soap that can be created, recipes, tints, perfumes and how to add different macerations, such as flowers and herbs.  

The course hours are 9 am – 11:30 am both days and has a cost of $500.00 mn to enroll, and takes place at the Museum.  The course will be taught by Irene Apolo LLerena.  Space is limited, and can be reserved either by calling the Museum,  872 15 45 or emailing Irene at irenissima75@yahoo.com

La Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel ha anunciado que este Martes, 15 de Septiembre, y Jueves, 17 de Septiembre, será el anfitrión  de un curso en como crear tus propios jabones artesanales. Aprenderás como fabricar tu propio jabón en casa, fácil y económicamente.  Temas incluirán la historia de la fabricación de jabón, los diferentes tipos de jabón, recetas, tintas, perfumes y como agregar materiales diferentes como flores y hierbas.

Las horas del curso son de las 9 am hasta las 11:30 am cada día, y  el costo de inscripcion es $500.00 y se llevara a cabo en el museo.  El curso será dirigido por lrene Apolo Llerena. New Cozumel Variety of Plant Discovered

Scientists of the University of Q. Roo Cozumel  campus are reporting the discovery a variety of the popular plant “Chaya” endemic only to the island of Cozumel. 

Chaya, commonly called “tree spinach” in English, is a large, fast growing leafy perennial shrub, native to the Yucatán Peninsula.  Chaya is a good source of protein, vitamins, calcium, and iron; and is also a rich source of antioxidants; however, the herb must be cooked prior to consumption since it can be toxic otherwise.

The new particular “Cozumel variety” grows in no other part of the world, and was discovered during a reseach project called “Senderos interpretativos y herbarios” (interpretative and herbal paths) lead by Marilú López Magia.  The discovery is in the process of being written up for various Scientific Botanical magazines.  

Científicos de la Universidad de Q. Roo (Uquroo) Cozumel están reportando el descubrimiento de una variedad de la planta popular “Chaya”, endémica de la isla de Cozumel.

Esta nueva “Variedad de Cozumel” no se encuentra en ninguna parte del mundo y la descubrieron durante un programa de investigaciones nombrado, “Senderos interpretativos y herbarios” bajo la directora Marilu Lopez Magia. El descubrimiento se encuentra en proceso de ser publicado en varias revistas científicas botánicas.

Chaya, conocido como “spinach tree” en ingles, es un arbusto perenne, grande y frondoso que crece rápido y es endémico de la península Yucatán. Es una buena fuente de proteínas, vitaminas, calcio y hierro y también es una fuente rica de antioxidantes; sin embargo, la hierba debe ser cocida antes de comerla o podría ser toxico.

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" - Carlino & Mama Grey

Carlino is a 1 year old male. He was brought to the Humane Society  this last May after being found in the streets by a concerned citizen. Carlino was very weak from starvation and severe dehydration. 2 more days on the streets and he would have certainly died.

Carlino is a shy boy, but so extremely loving. He attaches to people very easily. To help get over being shy he is kept in the patio often where he socializes with all and he comes on all our Sunday night pet parades and  is doing great. Carlino desperately needs a home. The shelter is a stressful place for him and despite eating very well, he only maintains his weight, he certainly could stand to gain more. We know that a loving home will help Carlino continue to blossom into the beautiful loving dog that he is. Please consider giving Carlino his much deserved second chance at life.


Mama Grey is a 2 and 1/2 year old beautiful smokey gray on white cat. She was left at our shelter by her owner with her 3 kittens 10 months ago. Poor Mama Grey just did not understand why she was left abandoned. Of course all her kittens were adopted and she continued to nurse many orphans there after.

Mama Grey has just never been happy at the Humane Society. She is always in the doorway of the cattery with a look upon her face that says: "Please rescue me". She is a very sweet, adorable loving cat. Of all of our adult cats, we cannot think of any other that so desperately needs a home and a second chance other than Mama Grey. If you are in the market to adopt a cat, please consider Mama Grey.

 Carlino es un perro macho que tiene un ano. Un ciudanado consciente nos lo trajo en Mayo pasado, despues de encontrarlo abandonado en las calles. Carlino estaba muy debil por estar sin comida y serveramente deshidratado. Con 2 dias mas en la calle, sin duda hubiera muerto.

Carlino es timido pero muy carinoso. Se adapta a otros facilmente. Para ayudarle a superar su intimidad, lo guardamos en el patio del santuario frequentamente donde puede socializarse con todos, y va a nuestros desfiles de mascotas en las noches de Domingos, y va muy bien. Carlino necesita un hogar desesperadamente. El santuario es un lugar estresante para el y aunque come bien, solamente esta manteniendo su peso; sin duda podria aumentar mas. Sabemos que un hogar amoroso ayudara a Carlino a continuar a crecer para ser el perro lindo y carinoso que es. Por favor, considere dando otra oportunidad bien merecida para vivir a Carlino.

Mama Grey es una gata que tiene 2-1/2 anos, bonita con pelo blanco y gris. Su dueno la dejo a ella y sus 3 gatitos en nuestro santuario hace 10 meses. La pobrecita Mama Grey no entendio por que fue abandonada. Claro  que todos sus gatitos fueron adoptados y ella continuo a amamantar a varios huerfanos despues.

Mama Grey nunca ha estado feliz en la Sociedad Humanitaria. Siempre esta en la puerta de la jaula de gatos con la mirada diciendo, “Por favor, rescatame”. Es una gata super dulce y adorable. De todos nuestros gatos maduros, no podemos pensar en otro que necesita un hogar tan urgentemente y otra oportunidad mas que Mama Grey. Si esta pensando en adoptar a un gato, por favor, considere a Mama Grey.
