Cozumel Prepares for the Ironman Event
The repair of the roads on the eastern side of the island started this week. This 10 million peso project will repair and re-pave 14 kilometers of the road that circles the island in preparation for the Ironman event scheduled to take place here in Cozumel November 27th – 29th.
Executives from ESPN and the Ironman Events are slated to arrive shortly to view various locations, approve the route for the race, and to finalize the event’s details. Participants in the Cozumel Ironman will arrive from 22 countries. This world-wide event will not only be a boon to tourism and the island’s economy, it will help place Cozumel in the spotlight as a vacation destination as well.
La reparacion de las calles del lado este de la isla empezo esta semana. Este proyecto, de 10 milliones de pesos, reparara y repavimentara 14 km de la carretera que rodea la isla como parte de las preparaciones del evento Ironman programado a llevarse a cabo del 27 hasta el 29 de Noviembre.
Ejecutivos de ESPN y del evento Ironman estan programados a llegar pronto para revisar varios locales, aprobar la ruta de la carrera, y para finalizar los detalles del evento. Participantes del Ironman Cozumel llegaran de 22 paises. Este evento mundial no solamente sera un gran apoyo al turismo y la economia de la isla, tambien ayudara a poner a Cozumel en el centro de la atencion publica como un destino vacacional.
  
Rock and Blues Benefit
Saturday October 3rd, Bandana Beach will be hosting a musical benefit with all proceeds going to help the Cozumel Chrysalis Group. There will be a beautiful sunset, great food, drink and live music by Blue Parrot!
Admission includes some food and drink, and one free raffle ticket. Over 20 great prizes to be raffled throughout the night! Additional raffle tickets will also be sold at the event.
Tickets are $100 pesos in advance, $120 pesos at the door and are available at Tony Rome's, Hotel Aguilar, Bandana, Cozumel Health and Casa de la Cultura.

El sabado 3 de Octubure, Bandana Beach sera anfitrion de un musical benefico con todos los ingresos destinados a apoyar al Grupo Chrysalis Cozumel. Habra un bello atardecer, buena comida, bedidas y musica en vivo de Blue Parrot!
La admision incluye algunas bebidas y comida, y un boleto para rifa gratis. Mas de 20 grandes premios seran rifados durante el transcurso de la noche! Boletos adicionales de la rifa estaran en venta en el evento.

University Scholarships Awarded
La Fundación Comunitaria Cozumel awarded nearly 70 thousand pesos in scholarships for the fall term at the University of Quintana Roo. These scholarships assist students in the tourism, English language, commercial systems and natural resource management.
The Foundation is headed by the Lic. Raul González Angle and Victor Santín Padilla, who presented their "Becas universitarias" to University officials last week.
La Fundacion Comunitaria Cozumel concedio casi 70,000 pesos en becas para el semestre otonal en la Universidad de Quintana Roo. Estas becas ayudan a estudiantes en los rubros de turismo, Ingles, sistemas comerciales, y administracion de recursos naturals. La fundacion esta manejada por el Lic Raul Gonzalez Angle y Victor Santin Padila, quienes presentaron sus “Becas universitarias” a los oficiales de la Universidad la semana pasada.

Cozumel 4 You Happy Hour - Next Week Caribe Blu
Next week we’ll be returning to our regular happy hour format at Caribe Blu Hotel, right on the water. For those of you who have never had the pleasure of being there for sunset, they have a large covered deck area with an unencumbered view of the ocean. Owners Eva and Robert, will be offering drink specials, and of course, their yummy food.
Caribe Blu is located just south of town, immediately past Meridiano 87, the dry dock marina.
Cozumel 4 You hosts a bi- weekly Friday happy hour weekly at a different location from 6 – 9 pm. If you have an idea for a happy hour or are interested in hosting one, please contact Laura.
La proxima semana vamos a regresar a nuestro formato regular de la Hora Feliz en Caribe Blu Hotel, directamente frente al mar. Para ustedes quienes nunca han tendio la placer de estar alla para un atardacer, tienen un area grande de patio cubierto con una vista al mar sin obstaculos. Los duenos, Eva y Robert, van a ofrecer especiales en bebidas y, por supuesto, su rica comida.
Caribu Blu esta ubicado al sur de la ciudad, inmediatamente pasando Meridiano 87, la marina seca.
 
Humane Society "Pets of the Week" - Sissy & Mayalu
Sissy is a female, approximately 2 years old. Sissy was rescued from the dump on the east side of the island. The Humane Society of Cozumel in collaboration with the International Fund of Animal Welfare have been conducting a project to save the dump dogs of Cozumel, to read more about this project: http://s1.zetaboards.com/Cozumel_4_You/topic/2195783/1/#new.
Most of the adult dogs have been spayed and neutered and returned to the dump where three workers take care of them the best they can. Sissy was different. She was not a main part of the pack and was always at the front entrance to the dump. She is extremely friendly and would greet all that passed by with bum wiggles.
We noticed she was thinner than the main pack of dogs. She was taken to the Humane Society and spayed, initially we thought she should go back, but there was just something different about her. We are very sure she was abandoned at the dump and her owners probably left her right there at the gate. We made the decision to keep her and re home her. We found her to have heart worm and she has been treated for that. Sissy is very, very loving and affectionate. Currently Sissy is in foster care with Nancy Murray, who is taking good care of her. We need a home for Sissy, so great people like Nancy can continue to help other dogs in need.
Sissy es una hembra que tiene aproximadamente 2 anos. Sissy fue rescatada del tiradero en el lado este de la isla. La Sociedad Humanitaria en colaboracion con el Fondo Internacional del Bienestar Animal, ha estado manejando un proyecto para salvar a los perros del tiradero de Cozumel. La mayoria de los perros maduros han sido esterilizados y devueltos al tiradero donde tres trabajadores los cuidan lo mejor que pueden. Sissy era diferente. No fue una parte principal del grupo y siempre estaba en la reja de la entrada al tiradero. Es super amigable y saludaba a todos los que pasaban moviendo la cola. Notamos que estaba mas delgada que el resto de los perros. Fue llevada a la Sociedad Humanitaria para esterilizacion.
En el principio, pensabamos que deberia ser devuelta, pero simplemente habia algo diferente en ella. Estamos muy seguros que fue abandonada en el tiradero, y sus duenos mas probable la dejaron alli en frente de la reja. Decidimos guardarla y econtrar un hogar para ella. Econtramos que tenia un gusano de Corazon y la tratamos para eso. Sissy es muy, muy carinosa y amorosa. Ahorita, Sissy tiene un hogar temporal con Nancy Murray, quien la esta cuidando. Necesitamos una casa permanente para Sissy, para que gente genial como Nancy puedan seguir ayudando a otros perros necesitados.
We like to refer to Mayalu as an oriental tabby, as she has an oriental look about her. Mayalu is a female approximately 2 years old. She was gathered up a year and half ago with her kittens from the car ferry where she had been living. Of course all her kittens were adopted, but Mayalu remains behind with all our other tabbies desperately needing homes. Mayalu is a very affectionate, loving cat and would make anybody a wonderful companion. She has nothing but love to give.
Again please, consider trap/neuter and release of cats in your neighborhood. The Humane Society cannot support anymore cats and the only way to deal with this is as a community. Please consider taking the time to catch the stray cats in your neighborhood. Volunteers are more than happy to explain how to use them and sterilize what you catch for free! Mayalu. Nos gusta referirnos a ella como la gata oriental porque tiene un “look” oriental. Mayalu es una hembra quien tiene aproximadamente 2 anos. Fue recogida hace un ano y medio con sus gatitos del ferry de transbordador donde ha estado viviendo. Claro que todos sus gatitos fueron adoptados, pero Mayalu quedo atras con todos nuestros otros gatos quien desperadamente necesitan hogares. Mayalu es una gata muy carinosa y amorosa y sera una excelente compañia para cualquiera. No tiene mas que amor para dar.
De Nuevo, por favor consideren atrapar/esterilizar y soltar a los gatos sylvestres en tu colonia. La Sociedad Humanitaria no puede mantener mas gatos y la unica manera para manejar esto es como una comunidad. Por favor consideren tomar el tiempo para atrapar los gatos sin casa en tu colonia. Les mostraremos como usar las trampas y esterilizar a los que atrapan totalmente gratis. Necesitamos tu ayuda en esto, pero mas, te necesitan los gatos de Cozumel! Favor de ayudarnos a acabar el sufrimiento de tantos gatos y gatitos en Cozumel.

Mass Steralization Campaign Kicks Off
This Monday the 21st of September, the Humane Society started the new phase of the free spay/neuter campaign. With the support of IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) the spay/neuter efforts will be intensified dedicating two days a week to providing this service in mass. On these first 2 days of intensified campaign 28 pets were sterilized, the goal per week being 50 animals. The idea is to gain campaign speed as they go along and reach the goal of 2,000 animals for the first year, which is roughly 10% of the estimated pet population in Cozumel.
The Humane Society medical staff has been training for this several months now. Part of the preparation included the visit last month of a veterinarian from Monterrey, Dr. Erika Garcia Chung, whose expertise is exclusively on volume spay/neuter. Erika worked with each veterinarian and assistant individually, to improve techniques and advise on details to make surgeries safer and faster. She also worked with the team as a whole to make the whole procedure happen smoothly and efficiently.
Dr. Erika's visit was made possible in part by the support of local sponsors: James Watts from REMAX graciously offered complimentary bed and breakfast at Summerplace Inn, and both Rock'n Javas donated meals.
The Humane Society is determined to achieve the goal of Cozumel being 70% sterilzed within the next 5 years. This statistic alone has been proven to end replacement issues. Please support the Humane Soceity so they can get the job done and Cozumel can be a hope and inspiration for many other areas in Mexico.
Este Lunes 21 de Septiembre, la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel comenzó la nueva fase de la campaña de esterilización gratuita de mascotas. Con el apoyo de IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare), el esfuerzo de esterilización se empezará a hacer masivamente, dedicando dos días a la semana a hacer principalmente cirugías de esterilización. En los primeros dos días de esta campaña intensiva se operaron 28 mascotas, siendo la meta semanal es de 50 animales. La intención es gradualmente aumentar la velocidad de campaña para llegar a la meta de 2,000 animales en el primer año, lo cual constituye aproximadamente el 10% de la población total estimada de mascotas en Cozumel.
El staff médico de la Sociedad Humanitaria se ha estado preparando para esta campaña por varios meses. Parte importante del entrenamiento fue la visita de una veterinaria de Monterrey, la Dra. Erika García Chung, quien es experta en campañas de esterilización en masa. Erika trabajó individualmente con cada médico y asistente para mejorar técnicas, y con todo el equipo junto para hacer que todo el procedimiento sea fluído y eficiente.
La visita de la Dra. Erika fue posible en parte por el apoyo de patrocinadores locales: James Watts de REMAX ofreció la estancia y desayunos gratuitos en Summerplace Inn, y los Rock'n Javas donó alimentos.
La meta de la Sociedad Humanitaria es para obtener el 70% del Cozumel esterilizada en 5 anos. Hay prueba de este estatistica es el fin del problemas a remplazar. Por favor, ayuda a la Sociedad Humanitaria a trabajar. En este respecto, nuestra isla, Cozumel, puede ser una inspiracion y ejemplo para otros lugares en Mexico.

Collecting Shoes for Kids: “Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel" which has been helping local children with school supplies and backpacks, is starting a new challenge. They are collecting new and gently used shoes for families in need. Their goal is 500 pairs of kids shoes from ages 1 year to 16 for boys and girls alike. They currently have around 100 pairs, and are intending to continue to collect them until 3 King’s Day when they will be distributed to needy families in the jungle. Starting next week, you’ll be seeing signs at various collection locations saying “Shoes for Kids” including Kelly's Sports Bar and Grill on 10 right by the town square.. “Los Ninos Limpien Cozumel” la cual ha estado ayudando a los ninos locales con sus provisiones escolares y mochilas, esta empezando un nuevo reto. Esta recolectando zapatos nuevos y poco usados para familias que los necesitan. Su meta es 500 pares de zapatos de ninos de los edades 1 hasta 16 anos para ambos ninos y ninas. Ahorita tienen 100 pares y tiene la intention es seguir recolectandolos hasta el dia de los 3 Reyes Magos cuando seran distribuidos a las familias necesitadas en la jungla. A partir de la siguinete semana, vas a ver letreros en varios locales de recolecion que dicen “Zapatos para Ninos” incluyendo en Kelly’s Sports Bar y Grill en la 10 al lado del centro. Los Cinco Soles Bazaar: This coming Oct 4th Sunday, is the date of the famous Los Cinco Soles yearly bazaar starting at 9 am. There are always super discounts on a wide variety of arts, crafts, T-shirts, and other item, as well as food from Panchos Backyard. This is a famous event here on the island, and not to be missed.

Short Film Festival: This Thursday and Friday there will be a short film festival at the University of Quintana Roo. The festival, which takes place in the auditorium, will be from 6 – 8 pm on both nights, with an award for the best short film presented on Friday. Saturday marks the finale of the Fall Cultural Program with fire dancing, acrobatics, juggling and much more.at Parque Benito Juárez starting at 8 pm.

Red Cross Golf Day: Red Cross Golf day is slated for Sunday October 11th, with a shot gun start at 10 am. . Any level of golfer is welcome .
